My husband and I visited on Saturday, January 4th at about 7pm. When we arrived the parking lot was full, we still got a great spot & when we entered there was one other couple waiting to be seated. The host sat them promptly & then sat us. We were placed in the far back corner, away from most of the tv's (mush to the hubby's dismay as there were playoff games on. I didn't care the Texans had just won as we walked into the door!!) We were brought warm chips, yummy salsa & menus quickly. Shortly thereafter our server, Reyna arrived and took our drink order. I asked about their Sangria margarita and it was highly recommended, so I ordered it & the small queso to pair with the salsa. Let me tell you the salsa and queso mixed was so so good & that Sangria margarita was spot on good. I had the Herberts special with beef enchiladas, a crispy taco and I opted for a bean/cheese chalupa (it comes with a guacamole chalupa.) My hubby had the Anthony special (2 enchiladas-he chose shredded chicken w/the house enchilada sauce, beef fajita tacos and a chalupa.) He devoured the enchiladas & he's not normally an enchilada fan. Both our meals were awesome. Reyna was beyond attentive, friendly and personable-she was everything a server should be! Our server was very nice and the ambience is cute You do sit outside, but I personally like sitting outside. The food was mediocre. The food was overall bland and needed salt. Nothing like a margarita and some Mexican food in a Saturday afternoon. Herberts has inside and outside seating which is convenient. We sat inside and the service was quick. The food and drinks here have never been good, everyone knows that. It's the patio and kids playground that people come for. But since the service has declined so bad, I'm not coming back anymore. Just waited a half hour to be seated while staring at open tables. They're under-staffed, I get it. We get seated and after 20mins of a waitress not checking in with us (no water or chips) we had to go let the hostess know we didn't even have a water yet. Then we waited another 10+ mins, still no waitress came to us. They just kept walking right by us. So we walked. On the way out figured we should talk with the manager and let her know, as we've been coming here for years. Took over 10 mins to speak with her lol! Like I said, been coming here for years even though the food and drinks suck. When the service declines this bad, we won't be coming back. read more

What a great dinner and drinks tonight at Herbert's Taco Hut! We were lucky we got Summer as our server, Summer was PERFECT. Herbert's was packed of course for a Friday night, but the food and beer were on time. I had the cheese enchiladas dinner and the wife (and Ben!) had the Manske Roll which was INCREDIBLE! Great place for Mexican food. Four of us stopped in on July 4th. Though the parking lot was full, they seated us right away. This place is bigger than it looks with a giant shaded outdoor area. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. The enchiladas have multiple options for a sauce. HIGHLY recommend the enchilada gravy. Cant explain what it is other than I wish I had more of it. Maybe even a bowl to dunk the tortillas in. My wife is a flauta connoisseur a d she said they were great. Would definitely recommend this place. read more

Hi all. I like Herbert's, I really do. Nice outdoor seating area, kids play area and good drinks. They sometimes have live music at night. But ask most people that have been there and they will tell you that the food is mediocre at best. We were just there, and the street tacos were almost inedible. Dry as desert sand. And that pains me as I do like the place. So if the food is you're most important thing, I would pass on this place. But if outdoor seating with good drinks and a place for the kids to go appeals to you, this is it. Maybe eat first before you go. read more

I have been coming here for years, now the suddenly are taxing you on credit card purchases on the bill and double taxing you on alcohol. First off normal tax and then another tax on the alcohol. Is the state of Texas suddenly taxing all sales of alcohol twice or is this a scam, seems the state of Texas has no idea. We wanted to try something different tonight. TexMex was on the top of everyone's list. Since different friends had this place rated from 2 to 5 we decided to give them a try. It was a rainy foggy night, & the parking lot was very dark. Rain had washed mud onto the entrance area. As my daughter started to start up the ramp, her feet went flying out from under her and she busted her a**. She was ok, but she was covered in mud. We went in and got seated. She went to the bathroom to clean up. I told our waiter about the incident and he reported it to the manager. He apologized for the issue, said the manager was going to put sand on the slick area, and then the manager would come to talk to us. The manager never came to talk to us, and when we left, saw that they had never placed anything on the slick area! Positives for the trip - waiter was really good. He kept the chips filled and checked on us often. He rates a 5 that helps offset the lack of concern from management. My food was pretty good. The enchiladas were worth going back for. The skirt steak was missing seasoning. The other stuff was alright. If it had been an old person that fell, this place would've been in trouble. Stopped into Herberts for lunch while out. They had remodeled, they still have the fun, laid back atmosphere . The food was awesome as usual, love the bean and cheese tacos with handmade flour tortillas and all three sauces were delicious. Herbert's hand make their tortilla chips and the salsa is spicy, goes great with an ice cold Dos Equis draft. Highly recommend Herbert's if you like Mexican food, they are well known for their enchiladas. read more

I don't know where to begin here. We had a 30 people wedding reservation and it was perfect. The drinks were great and our servers did amazing. They were so attentive, kind, and provided the best customer service possible. I know from experience that's a huge table top to take care of but they did excellent. Seriously, never had an empty drink and they brought everything we all asked for. I had the beef fajita enchiladas and they were seriously the best enchiladas I've ever had. Not impressed with the cheese enchiladas. I am not a fan of the chili flavor. I prefer a gravy like sauce similar to the carne guisada sauce used by some restaurants. Beef fajitas had a good flavor though. The salsa for the chips was too spicy for my liking and I prefer my sauce cooked. read more

Great service, food and atmosphere! Our granddaughter told us about Herbert's Taco Hut in San Marcos and said it was really good so wanted to try the place in New Braunfels and it was yummy!!! The food is fantastic. I am very picky about Mexican food due to dining at Maudie's Hacienda in Austin for so many years. Herbert's is very close to Maudie's, and now I don't have to drive an hour for great Tex-Mex. The service at Herbert's is fast and friendly too. Every time I drive by the parking lot is packed and I keep going. Finally stopped for lunch and realized that it's likely because of a small parking lot. The inside was actually not crowded at all. Don't let the parking lot fool you. We ate outside during an awesome spring day. The flys started to be a problem, but not too bad. The waiter was incredibly nice and kept the fluids promptly full. One challenge with this place is that there wasn't really a lunch menu for lunch. Each day of the week they have a lunch special, but if you don't care for that you order off the dinner menu. In a land of Tex-Mex, that's a crazy business choice. I ordered the new street tacos. When they came out I was a bit under whelmed. They almost appeared to be tapas. They came on some oily corn tortillas that were very uninspiring. The meat, onions and cilantro were great, however. Also it arrived with charro beans that I enjoyed. So to me, nothing special and a weird miss with the menu. I'd go again but wouldn't seek it out. read more

Good layout. Large outdoor patio with playground for the little. But way more cons than pros at this restaurant. They charge you for using a debit card, which sucks seeing is how they have a nice G wagon Mercedes parked right in front like a show. Service was AWFUL. Had to continue to remind my own waitress about bringing stuff. MArgarita and Mexican martini were probably the worst I've ever had to be honest. There food was decent, but salsa was delicious. The one star is for the waiter who was pleasant . Otherwise, I would give this restaurant zero stars. We have been waiting more than an hour for our order. We had to call the manager who is not on duty and the regular manager is not on duty. The assistant manager came to our table and said our order was placed 18 minutes after we ordered it.
