Consistently great food and attentive wait staff. We especially love the dinner for two menu.

It's been at least a decade since we visited KC, so we were really disappointed that the downtown Hereford House was making way for upscale apartments. But, happily, we found this alternate location and were excited to try it out. It did not disappoint! Our server, Parker, was really helpful and friendly. Super fresh salads! Then, the reason we anticipated our visit -- BEEF! I had the bacon wrapped twin medallions, cooked perfectly, with a wonderful twice baked potato. Hubby had the Hereford House strip (which he said was as tender as my filet) and the cheddar ranch potatoes (think scalloped potatoes with a twist of flavors). Tonight was our best visit to the hereford house to date. Other than the unfriendly young man who greeted us, the service from Luke was excellent, the prime rib was cooked to perfection and the manager is always a friendly face. The fact that she remembered us speaks volumes. This location is superior to all others we've tried. We will make the 35 minute drive whenever craving a quality steak. Great job!!! read more

I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich. It was dry, cold and the bun was burnt. I never send food back but this time I had to. The second round was better however, the fries were cold. This time I didn't complain I just won't go back. Very disappointed. read more

I'm a regular at Herford House in Shawnee. I normally have excellent service and excellent food. However, tonight was anything but that. A server took 10 minutes to come to our table to ask for drinks. Then returned 5 minutes later to verify what drinks we wanted. Took 10 minutes to return and take the order. Came back to the table 15 minutes later to verify how we wanted it cooked already told her that. Food came out missing things and no refill on tea after the food came out. The restaurant was not busy yet this was at 4:30 in the afternoon. Servers were standing around talking to each other. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes. We normally get in and out of all restaurants we go to under an hour. We almost left twice before the food came out. I have always been a true fan of this restaurant but truly highly disappointed. You need to remember your not Ihop you are expected to get could service for meals that cost a lot of money. read more

My main squeeze has been very good to me so I decided to treat him to a steak dinner (steak being his favorite) at the Hereford House in Shawnee. I had a Groupon that was about to expire so we jumped into the the Escort and motored out to the 'burbs from the confines of our inner-city neighborhood. The joint out in Shawnee does not have the atmosphere that the old Hereford House downtown had. It is typically suburban. Somewhat sterile and cookie-cutter in appearance. None of the Hereford Houses I've visited have had much atmosphere but...it was easily accessible and we were greeted with smiles and promptly seated. I think our server may have been a bit overworked. He seemed to be constantly in a hurry but he was polite. He took our drink orders and food orders promptly. When our server brought the menues, he flew up to the table, put the menus down and announced as he flittered off..."we're out of prime rib"...are you kidding me? A steak joint "OUT" of prime rib? Now look, there is a way to let your cutomers down easily. We know it's hard to tell someone the joint is out of one of it's signature dishes...I thought the way our server approached it was tacky and unprofessional. We went for the $65 special for two which included KC Strip for both of us, we both had the loaded baked potato, dinner salad and peach cobbler for dessert. Some dinner rolls were served on the side. We also got an appetizer with this special. We ordered the shrimp and crab stuffed mushroom caps which were delicious! The salad came out and it looked like someone reached into one of those bags of Dole Salad mix and slopped it on the plate. Some of the lettuce was brown on the edges. It was sloppily presented. No need to be sloppy on a simple salad. The entrées came out after a bit of a wait...not too long...it's steak...it has to be done right. The loaded baked potato was tasty but it seemed as though it had been sitting...under a lamp? in a warmer? I don't know. It didn't seem very fresh although it was edible and it did taste good. The steak was impeccably cooked. Perfectly cooked to my satisfaction. Medium and very juicy and flavorful! Tender bites. Man that was a piece of tasty beef! I ended up taking half of it home because the appetizer was more substantial than I had planned and I didn't want to be stuffed. Then came the peach cobbler with ice cream and it was superb! Warm and cold at the same time, creamy and sweet! Yowza! We probably won't get out this way soon and actually I think some of the steak houses at the Legends do as good of a job for less. But, if you're around the Hereford House, it isn't a bad place to dine. read more

My husband and I ate here today for the first time. We started off with the spinach and artichoke dip, which was delicious. We both ordered the ribeye. He ordered his medium with mashed potatoes, and I ordered mine medium well with the cheesy potatoes. The steaks were TERRIBLE. You would think for a steakhouse they could cook a good steak, but it was awful. It had more of a chicken fried steak texture than ribeye. They were both brought out to us well done, too. The side items were good. I will say the server we had was wonderful. We never had an empty glass and she was super friendly. If you go here DO NOT spend $30 on the ribeye. read more

THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE. Ben was our waiter and made sure all of our steaks were cooked to perfection. When I wasn't pleased with my steak, he made sure an entirely new meal was made for me. I'm going to give them a four star review because the waiter Bennett was very attentive and polite, he also was very apologetic and offered to bring us a free dessert. The food was also very good I recommend the the five course meal. I got the filet which was very juicy and tender. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a good steak. read more

I really like that chicken sandwich with the wing sauce on it. Very nice environment, not noisy. Its great. The negative is don't try to use a gift card here because it is non stop hassle, they will not accept for lunch or happy hour or to go at lunch either. I wouldn't have asked for gift cards to here for Christmas if I knew. here it is June and I have only been able to use ten dollars of the 100 gift card so far. They have weird rules about them. They should not sell them, they have so many strings attached. read more

I took the family out to this Hereford House on March 1 because we had a $10 gift card that was long overdue for being used. I have to start by saying that most of my visits to the Hereford House, regardless of location, have been generally fair. Not good, not great, just fair. Sadly, this visit was no different. We got there early and were seated right away. I will start out by saying the wait staff was a cut above average, and for that we were grateful. My wife ordered the prime rib, my daughter got some kind of pasta, and I decided on a strip steak with bleu cheese crumbles melted on it. My wife's prime rib (medium) looked great. My daughter's meal seemed fine. Mine, on the other hand, was not so great. I had ordered medium rare, which I typically do, and what I got initially was a thin strip of medium-well. The cook probably over did it due to how thin it was. So, I made a comment to the waitress, she sent it back, and I within about 6 minutes I received a piping hot steak, cooked the way I had asked. For some reason it still was not juicy (did they partially nuke it?), but it was fine and much better than what I was first given. No less than 3 different staff people asked me how my second steak was, but oddly enough, no one had bothered to ask me to cut into my steak the first time to make sure it was prepared the way I had asked. This may be the last time I eat at Hereford House. For these prices, I expect much better. I have had some better luck at the Overland Park location in Town Center, but every other location I have tried, even the old original one downtown, has never been great. I'd rather eat at an Outback or Longhorn steakhouse next time than have to put up with subpar food at high prices. read more

I've left a review already but I just need to say how wonderful our server Theresa was. We normally eat in the bar and always try to sit in her section. We joked about how she never says no. Love their butter and dinner rolls. Melt in your mouth. You have to pay for them now, but they are worth it. Love the cozy bar booths or outdoor area. I have really mixed feelings about this negative review, as I loved this place for years (especially their food and cocktails). After a series of events, however, I no longer feel welcome here. Briefly, I was having a cocktail with friends near closing time on a recent Saturday night, when a major storm cut off the electricity. When my friends and I were ready to go, the electricity had not been restored, so the credit card machines would not work. We waited patiently for about half an hour, until the manager kindly stated that the restaurant would cover our bill. All three of us had one drink, so it wasn't a big deal. About five minutes later, as we're preparing to leave, the manager returns with an embarrassed look - his boss instead wanted us to pay, and he asked for our phone numbers. It was not a big deal, as the bill total was tiny, but it left a sour taste in my mouth. Especially since we'd been already waiting a long time. As a manager in the service industry, not only would I be offering to buy drinks, but I would also be handing out gift certificates, due to the inconvenience of waiting for the credit card machine. The next day, when the manager contacted me, I paid, but I also made note about how it seemed kind of petty that I would pay, after my friends and I were inconvenienced. Hours later, I received a note from another manager (Lorri), apologizing and offering to send gift certificates. I give her my address, but the certificates never came. When I followed up, I received no answer. All in all, I don't recommend coming here, due to the owners and management. I used to love this place and patronize it several times a month, but there are many other great places that are far more considerate of their guests. read more

Service was awesome, steak cooked perfect and location was somewhat difficult to distinguish from the hotel next door. Just use the GPS to find the location or map quest it before you leave the house! Before 5 pm is a great time for excellent service after which you may have a bit of a wait but over all the staff works hard to be every thing you expect from a great restaurant, enjoy! read more

Hereford House is one of my long standing favorite steak places. We decided to use a coupon we had Sunday for a late lunch. I opted for the top sirloin this time just to try something different. It was very good. A little tougher than I expected but it is a sirloin so well worth the money regardless. It was cooked perfect, the salad was a bit disappointing if that is possible. There were several dark brown pieces in the salad which surprised me considering where we were. But it was still an overall good experience. They switched from the sourdough rolls to a honey wheat roll which I am not a huge fan of. The rolls are good but I prefer the original sourdough. Overall, still one of my favorite steak places. If you're not in the mood for steak, their chicken dishes are also very good. read more

So very disappointed with the Hereford House restaurant in Shawnee. We made reservations 3 weeks ago for Valentine's Day dinner, there were plenty of times to choose from it was wide open!! We arrived for our dinner 5 minuets before our reservation and gave them our name. We were told it would be a little while, I asked how long since we had a reservation at 7 she thought for a moment and said it would t be long. Fine no problem. A few minutes later they took us to our table which was a small bar table. I asked why they had seated us in the bar and they said that was all they had available and if we wanted a table in the dining room it would be a while! I was a bit shocked since we had called 3 weeks ago to reserve a table!!! The hostess didn't care and walked away. When we finally got a manger to our so called table he said it was our fault when we reserved the table we didn't say we didn't want to sit in the bar!!! Wow didn't realize that whenever you reserved table this was a prerequisite. Oh and four people had walked in in front of us didn't have a reservation and hearing him tell the hostess he was a doctor got seated at a table before us!!! Went last night and sat in bar. Honestly a really good happy hour menu and prices very good. Had calamari- good and sea hogs - very good. Both steaks we had were slightly undercooked but server and manager did a really good job of addressing without us even asking for anything. Steaks were good btw in terms of flavor. I got the filet and it wasn't as tender as a filet should be but it was seasoned properly. The baked potato was so overcooked I had trouble cutting it. The center was the only edible part. The rolls are dry and have hard bits of fiberous or seedy stuff in them that hurt my teeth to chew. The salad was made with cheap iceburg lettuce. Not worth $32.00 and not worth going back. I will stick to J.Gilberts if I want a good Filet Mignon dinner for the same price. read more

Hereford House is our all time favorite steak house. We lived in KC until we retired in 2012. This was always our go to. Now that we live in Texas, we specifically go thru KC & make sure it is dinner time! The happy hour is the best with smaller portions that are just as good as the amazing full sized steaks. ALWAYS get the "two dressings" and combine them. It is a sweet creamy Italian and cheddar cheese. YUM. read more

Was staying at the Holiday Inn express and decided too try it out.. We came in around 9pm on a Saturday and they close at 10pm... I have to say it was great.. I had the 22ooz Porter house and my wife had the outlaw pasta and we were both pleased with the service and the food even being so close to closing.. I ordered the rib eye, and although it was cooked correctly, the cut of meat looked like I ordered it a Denny's. This is my second disappointment with this once top notch Kansas City Steakhouse. All of the steaks I have ordered here are the victim of a "lazy" cut. Heck, you get a better deal, and a better steak if you wait for steak night at Tanner's. My husband and I went to Hereford House in Leawood, for Valentine's Day. My husband ordered a salad with his meal and I chose the bisque. The bisque tasted like it came from a can of Campbell's. We waited quite a long time for our entrée, but the server did come by and say that the kitchen was behind. I order a filet, cooked medium and a baked potato with sour cream and butter. My steak arrived chard and well done and the baked potato was just a whole potato, not even sliced open and no sour cream or butter. I ordered steak because Hereford House is known for steak so one would think they would know how to cook it properly. My husband ordered salmon which came with grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes. The asparagus was burnt, the salmon over cooked and there were no mashed potatoes at all. We had to stop the server and ask for the butter and sour cream for my meal and the mashed potatoes for my husband's meal. We had received a mailer coupon for $10 so my husband presented it and the server said since it was a holiday they were not accepting coupons. That would have been fine, if everything with the meal was outstanding and it was far from it. This was actually the second time we went to eat there and the food and service were mediocre at best. We won't be going back. Too bad as I had always heard that Hereford House was a KC tradition. read more
