We had a wonderful dinner at the Hereford House in Shawnee. The stuffed mushroom appetizer was delicious as always. We both had the filet which was cooked to perfection. I had a cocktail called the blueberry collins and it was really good. If you like blueberries definitely try this drink. We finished off with the white chocolate bread pudding flambe style and it was some of the best bread pudding I've ever had. If you are not a bread pudding fan, don't let it put you off. There are no raisins and this is more like a thick custard cake. Creme brulee and flan fans will enjoy it. read more

Never been to this Hereford house off of Midland Drive before but my Mother wanted to go here to celebrate her birthday so I took the 7 of us out yesterday, January 12th. All of the food was wonderful and it would've gotten a 5 star rating if had just been the food but the service was really poor. Our waitress was Sherry. We were seated at 6:30 pm and our drink orders weren't taken until 7:10pm. I ordered their take on a Moscow mule and my wife ordered a fruity mimosa. Sherry brought out my mule in a normal glass (Everyone knows it should be in a copper mug) and then poured my wife some sparkling wine from a bottle. My wife corrected her and her drink was replaced with the correct one. We didn't receive our entrees until 7:55 pm. They had a restaurant week menu which seemed like a good bargain so me and my wife both ordered that. For an appetizer she had the stuffed mushrooms and I had the wings which were both delicious. For the Entrees we both had the 12 oz. strip with mashed potatoes which were also delicious. I asked Sherry for some A1 sauce and she said she'd be right back. 10 minutes later I flag her down and ask her about the A1 sauce and she finally gets it for me. I order a 2nd mule and this time it comes out in the proper copper mug. My wife also switches to a mule after tasting mine but Sherry brings her another fruity mimosa instead to which my wife replies, it's fine don't worry about it. I order a 3rd mule which comes out in a copper mug but the mug is significantly smaller than the 2nd mule. I asked Sherry what was up with that and she said "oh they probably just add more ginger beer to the second mug." I noticed on the receipt that they charged me 10 dollars a pop for my mules so why am I paying the same price for 3 significantly different beverages? The dessert comes out, which includes the best carrot cake I ever ate. My wife regretted ordering the cheesecake and tried to snipe bites off of my desert but the cheesecake was ok too. Sherry then brings out the bill without bothering to ask if it was all on one check. (My sister and her husband paid for themselves). We ask her to split the check and she brings out separate checks. I want to start out saying that Hereford House was my favorite steak restaurant for many, many years. The last several times I have been it has been, well, not good. The last time I went it was down right awful. The steak was something out of Sirloin Stockade or not even that great. I decided to write the company as I has two BAD experiences in a row. My husband and I had a late lunch there today and it was fantastic. Sometimes a late lunch can end you up with warmed over food, so-so food. Not at the HH on Shawnee. My country fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy was superb! My husband had the liver and onions and it too, was superb. Liver and onions is a hard dish to fix, but his sister told him it was great and it was! We have eaten here several times and are never disappointed, but today was the "bomb". So worth a trip if one is getting "cabin fever". read more

Went to Hereford House for Christmas Eve dinner with Wife, her sister, brother in law and their kids. Had a reservation so we were seated quickly. Wife and I were early so we ordered some appetizers for us. Wife's sister and family showed up shortly just as appetizers were coming out. So far, so good, but service went down from there. Our server just seemed overwhelmed and we had to constantly ask for drinks to be refilled, more butter, plates cleared, etc. Most of the food was good. My brother in law ordered the blackened rib eye. He said is was inedible. It had no seasoning and was practically all fat. He realizes that a ribeye is well marbled, but said half of it was just fat. The manager did come out and appologized, offered to cook something else, etc. So they did try to make it right, but it should have been easy to catch before it got sent out. We have always gone to the Hereford House in Leawood and had a fantastic experience. The level of service at this Hereford House was no where near that one. I am usually very laid back and will let a lot of things slide. I know it can get busy, staff doesn't show up so you're short handed, etc., but this went above that. I have to say I usually give the benefit of the doubt and don't mark down too severely for bad service but the service was pretty lousy at the Hereford House on my birthday dinner. My wife and I had the dinner for two which was definitely the cost effective way to go when adding up all the individual items. I was blown away by the Steak and Mozarella Crostini appetizer, I was definitely not expecting the beautiful flavors of the basil, fresh mozarella and thinly shaved steak! Alas, it went downhill from there, the steak soup tasted like something out of a can of Campbell's and my KC strip wasn't anything special. For dessert we had the carrot cake which was actually pretty good but couldn't redeem a night of really slow service, the server dropping my wine glass on the table and having it shatter (luckily it was empty!), and then having her continually remind us that it was her second night on the job and hoping she wouldn't be fired! A 28 dollar Kansas City Strip that had not been seasoned at all. it was just bare steak slapped on the grill and served with all of the panache and style of a school cafeteria. A steak that is less flavorful than the equivalent at Outback or Texas Roadhouse, and twice the price. And on top of that a baked potato that costs an extra dollar to have anything (even butter) put on, and a small table. Ambiance is one thing, but not for twice as much money. read more

Went here with my husband's company for their holiday party. Our server was great, however, the food (mainly mine) was terrible. I ordered the lobster tails and when the meals were brought out, mine was not one of them. I was told it would be a few minutes. Close to 30 minutes later, I finally got my meal. I cut into one of the tails and it was cold, not like sat on the counter and cooled off, but ice cold. I flagged down a waiter and showed them the un(der)cooked lobster tails. He said they would get me some fresh ones and took them back to the kitchen. Minutes passed without getting my lobster tails. The other people in the group were starting on their desserts and I still hadn't eaten my main course. After about 20-30 minutes, I finally got my meal. This was not a good showing for such a Kansas City dining mainstay. I don't know if we will be back after this. read more

Came here with my son, ordered the dinner for two for $75. Calamari was good but had to try several times to flag someone down for more water. The steak soup was next and it looked thick like black bean soup, it was aweful, and tasted like soup from a can. My filet came on a cafeteria plate dry, charred on the outside, very raw in the middle, along with a thick tendon attached tasting very irony. The white chocolate bread pudding was good until you got to the middle where it was very cold. HH used to be good, last three times is been very disappointing and I'll not return. Went to happy hour for my husbands birthday. There were 9 in our party. Bryan was our waiter, he was AMAZING!!! We were out on the patio, food was great, I recommend the Margarita, not too sweet. Fathers Day ended up a mess. Had reservations for 12:30...expecting the breakfast menu....no such luck. That ended at noon, which would have been nice to know when I made the reservations 5 days earlier...I assumed....fill in the blanks. Which left us with a full dinner menu at 1:00 pm. Yuck when we wanted bacon and eggs and french toast. My pork shank was cold...and really cold in the middle...mashed were luke warm. Mom's was half fat and Dad was fine because his martini went down well. Sent mine back with no sorry, comp, nothing, just a new plate hot and everyone else is done.. Lost my appetite by then.Spent over a hundred dollars..just excited to take my dad out for brunch on Fathers Day..no brunch, just ok food...nothing special...won"t go again. read more

If I could only give this restaurant a half a star, I would have. We were in KC visiting some family over the weekend and decided to take them out for what we thought would be a nice steakhouse for dinner. It was right next to the Marriott, where we were staying, and they took reservations, so we thought we'd try this place. Our server was very nice and professional, the scalloped potatoes are excellent, and their patio looked very nice, but those are the only things that I can write positively about. Out of 6 of us, only 2 people liked their meal. I ordered the Oven Roasted Salmon with seasonal vegetables. ($32) As soon as they set my plate down, both my husband and I noticed that the salmon smelled fishy. I had a few bites and gave my husband a few. It was very moist, but had a very fishy smell, which has NEVER happened to me at any other restaurant, yet alone one that charges $32!! We were nervous about eating any more, so then I tried my veggies. How can a place mess up seasonal veggies? They were lukewarm at best and barely cooked- and just didn't taste right. My husband ordered the tenderloin medallions and the scalloped potatoes. The meat was overcooked and didn't resemble beef tenderloin at all, but he said it was edible, although he only ate half of them. He said the potatoes were excellent. My brother-in-law had prime rib, he said it was ok but was quite sinewy (sp?). My mother in law liked her bbq ribs/chicken, and my other BIL loved his lamb chops. We didn't say anything to the management since we were taking our family out and it would have been a bit awkward, but I certainly hope the management reads their reviews and will, hopefully, improve their fare. And the fact that their prices are just outrageous makes the whole experience one that we will remember for a long time. NEVER AGAIN... we learned our lesson. read more

The only positive experience about our meal was the waiter. This restaurant has eliminated their core side dishes, do not include a vegetable, now charge for small side salads and refuse to bring bread. They initially ignore coupons and try to pass the bill off without including them (this has happened a few times). The final straw, being asked twice by two different people to examine my email coupon. Ridiculous! Then, another manager follows us out to the parking lot wanting to know why we were unhappy! What a terrific dinner we had! After reading reviews, I was expecting a less than stellar meal - boy was I surprised. We had a Groupon that was getting ready to expire so we picked a Monday night thinking it wouldn't be busy. By the time we left, it was packed! And the beef shortribs were like my mother's luscious Sunday roast, served over mashed potatoes with brown gravy, and some green beans. I ate every single bite and thoroughly enjoyed it. My dining companion had crab cakes, steak soup & fries and liked all. I don't know about the steaks, but the shortribs are worth five stars. And Luke, our server was friendly & frankly pretty cute! We had a horrible experience at this Hereford house. We won't be going back to this one, much prefer the town center location. We've had good experiences here before but this last visit was just awful. We were treating my parents to dinner along with our 18 month old. Our waiter was not attentive...but that is only the beginning. We received our appetizer and our salads. Our waiter had not checked on us or said anything and after 45 minutes of sitting, waiting for food, our 18 month old started getting antsy. I could not find our waiter, the wonderful water refilling gentleman asked if my daughter and I needed help, I stated that we had been waiting for some time and were concerned and could not find our waiter. (Also a couple that came in a minute before us had already ordered, eaten and left. A couple that came in 30 minutes after us received their food.) The water gentleman was so kind and got our waiter. The manager came over and gave a half hearted apology along with a dessert offer. (Though our meal came with a dessert because my husband and I did the 4 course meal) The manager stated that there was a large party and sorry that we had to wait so long. (We arrived at the restaurant at 4:30 because we had our daughter and wanted to get in and out) Our waiter never said a word or apologized about the wait. My husband and my steaks were burnt on top but we had given up on getting things corrected. The baked potatoes were underdone. I would never recommend going back to this restaurant! read more

My wife and I went there for dinner on a Saturday evening, the waiter was either stretched to thin or just lazy. I ordered the 14 oz ribeye cooked medium with loaded baked potato and my wife ordered the 9 oz Filet Minion medium rare, I asked my wife how her steak was and she said it had a charred taste, I said mine does to and it is called burnt. Our family loved the original location in Kansas City, MO but since it is no longer this is the location (Shawnee) we like to come to because the staff isn't as "stuffy" and we are usually treated well by the wait staff and management. This time I didn't feel the same "love" I am accustomed to. There was a new manager at the host/hostess station. He asked if we had a reservation and I did not (note: I don't make reservations unless I feel it would be necessary ie: holidays, busy times). I got a "huff" for that. Then when I asked to be seated in the bar area so that we could order from the happy hour menu I was told that they could not seat our party since it was too big (7 total). I was told we would have to be seated in the main dining room and we would have to order from the dinner menu. We love the happy hour menu and we often go there just for that. In the past, if we could not be accomodated in the bar area, whether there were too many of us or if the area was full, we have been able to order from the happy hour menu in other areas of the restaurant. This particular manager was obviously not going to accomodate us and if I would not of had out-of-town guests with me I would have left and gone somewhere else. I felt like making us order from the dinner menu was a ploy to make more money. I hate to say it but I might as well go to a chain steak house and pay less for the same service and quality of steak. I won't give up on the Hereford House but if this happens again, a long time customer will be lost. read more

By far, one of the worst dining experiences we've had in a long time. We had a reservation for 4 at 6:30 pm and didn't walk out the door until 8:50 pm. The waiter ignored us for the most part and we had to ask for a clean wine glass, water, straws, the food, the check and at one point didn't see him for about 45 minutes. After an hour and 45 minutes we finally went to the front desk to ask for a manager to see where the food was. When she came to the table she said the kitchen was backed up which clearly wasn't the case since all of the tables had turned over twice and several three times. The manager never apologized and there was never an offer for dessert, a discount on the check or even a coupon for the next time we came in. I understand restaurants have bad nights but this situation was handled so poorly by the manager. If she had just taken responsibility for the service we might have gone back for a second chance. I visited the Shawnee Kansas location today, and I ordered the 10oz. marbled rib eye - rare. What I received was a piece of meat that did not look like any rib eye I have EVER seen before. It was about 1/2 inch thick, at best, it was cooked medium, instead of rare like I ordered, it was not anywhere near sizzling, as the web site promotes, and it was very tough to cut through with a serrated steak knife. I was totally shocked! It looked like a steak you would receive with a breakfast order at a cheaper restaurant. As a matter of fact, I have had a steak at a local breakfast chain restaurant that had better flavor, better texture, and was easier to cut, and it was much cheaper than what Hereford House asks for this particular cut. If I was the chef at this restaurant I would have been embarrassed to serve this particular steak to anyone. The web site - http://www.herefordhouse.com/content/about_us.php - says, "We are celebrating our 50th anniversary and look forward to continuing the great tradition of serving ABSOLUTELY THE BEST STEAK in Kansas City, we guarantee it!" If the steak I received is considered to be their "ABSOLUTELY THE BEST" steak then I would not recommend ordering this steak. I would, however, recommend going to Golden Corral, saving you a lot of money, and disappointment. After this experience, IF I ever go back to a Hereford House restaurant, which is doubtful, I will never order the steak again. read more
