I ordered the ribeye (medium rare) and was super disappointed. It felt like they had seared both sides dry, and then served it to me with a cup of A1 steak sauce. The steak came out dry and bland, and I'm also not someone who puts sauce on my steak, so I was super disappointed with the steak. The middle made it look like it was a frozen steak that hadn't come to room temp soon enough before being cooked/served. They do offer bread and butter in the beginning as you wait, but the bread is pre toasted and then served cold. My boyfriend ordered the short ribs. Very unique menu! The chef takes a very modern spin on classics. The French Onion soup came with a delicious mushroom croquet. The braised short ribs came with a creamy polenta, grilled veggies and were cooked to perfection. And the chicken sandwich, meatball app and bread for the table...ALL SO GOOD. Took my boys for my birthday. I would define the ambiance as upscale Colorado rustic - subtle lighting, slender wood trunks overhead, beautiful and inviting. My boys ordered the kids chicken nuggets and regular NY strip steak. The nuggets were the best I've had; tried a bite or two (or four) of my son's. My pork chop...heavenly. Honestly, one of the best overall dishes I have ever eaten. The sweet potato gnocchi was such a brilliant compliment. Both my boys thought my entree was the best and they were right. Was in town visiting friends and family and this was the half point between my cousin and where I was staying. Looking online I thought the prices seemed pretty high for what they were offering. Once we got there the prices were about $1-$2 cheaper. I went with the Mc2 Rib sandwich with a side salad. The sandwich was very tasty and I loved the kimchi on it. Side salad was also great and they did a good job with the dressing ratio. The cocktail menu looked delicious but I went with the blood orange beer. Listen, cause y'all don't understand. This is it. Reservation was set up only a day in advance. I told them I'd be arriving right around 8. They informed me that was cool. They just have to be shutdown by 10 so we had plenty of time. They're doing the whole COVID situation, which I trust we are all familiar with by now. The service at this place was STELLAR. The host, the server, the bartenders, everyone. We started off the night with some cocktails. I had a Cha Cha Cha (super fruity and very summery). My friend had some type of Smokey peach drink. They were beyond good. Then we munched on some seafood hush puppies and ordered a bottle of wine. On the hush puppies we were huge fans of the squash sauce(?). I made a snack of that and their house made sourdough bread. Oh yeah. Sourdough bread with the fancy green salt butter? Forever a fan. So next up were the main courses. Shrimp & Grits, Lamb, Short Rib. All three dishes were 9.5/10 but the winner with a perfect 10? THE LAMB. It was pretty, it was balanced, it did not have one hint of that gamey taste lamb sometimes has. I could eat that every day. The shrimp and grits were amazing but after having Phil & Derek's in Houston nothing really compares. The short ribs were super tender and delicious. Finally the deserts. We had espresso martinis, the dessert special and the peanut butter and jelly bar. At this point the liquor had kicked in and to be honest I wasn't paying much attention to what was in my food. Whatever the special was, it was my favorite. It was light and fluffy and I think it went with the espresso martini better. Espresso just has an overpowering flavor so it didn't clash with the peanut butter bar BUT ya know it wasn't the best pairing for me. Whatever. Please don't sleep on this place. I would like to give a shout-out to their service because they did the best they could with our large party of 14. I know that can be really stressful but our server managed his best! Now to the food... for the prices they have the food quality does not match. The food is VERY salty, some of the vegetables were inedible even with the amount of salt. Solid place to eat in Broomfield! I've been for dinner and brunch and have been happy each time. They have a good menu and overall make consistently good food. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the price point. While the food is good, it isn't exceptional. There's nothing that I've specifically tried here that I've thought about again and wanted to go back for more of. The brunch was better since the price is on point for the quality. I had the chicken and waffles Benedict. It was good and for $12, was worth it. I also appreciate the creative spin merging the two dishes together. It works. Again, not exceptional, but I'd go back if a friend suggested it as a place to meet. read more

This was my first and honestly last time at hickory & ash. I went here for an anniversary dinner, and the service was horrendous. I know places are short staffed so I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. We came in at dinner time, and we waited at least 20 minutes after being seated to even get a drink order in. Other tables seated after us had the same server yet got waited on before us. Our server also forgot to bring us the complimentary bread and butter until we addressed it. The tables are placed extremely close to each other, with about an arms length away from the next person. My boyfriend ordered the salmon, and it was extremely dry and under seasoned, the best part of his dish were the basket of french fries. We've been to Hickory and Ash several times for special occasions and have never been disappointed. However, our server, Mackenzie C, has tragically ended that streak of wonderful experiences for us. Last night was one of the worst dining experiences of my life-we were rushed by the seemingly stoned server, who forgot to ring in one of our meals and left us wondering if their food would ever arrive. No manager came by to apologize or offer up ownership of the mistake, nor were we compensated for a steak that arrived 15 minutes after the others in our party were served. Mackenzie dropped off our check shortly after the final person in our party was served, and she certainly didn't dawdle in grabbing the signed check as soon as she saw it was ready. My guess is she was ready to be off the clock and just wanted us to get out of there. Too bad she forgot to ring in an entire meal, as that set her back about 15 extra minutes. Good thing she didn't offer dessert, we would've really kept her then! Won't be back. Severely disappointed in what used to be a neighborhood favorite. read more

Hickory and Ash is a sleek New American restaurant in what feels like an artificially-created downtown area in the middle of a field, but don't let that deter you. Once inside, it actually feels like a restaurant in a more urban area...and the food is of a quality that I would expect in a city. I've been eager to check this place out after seeing a few reviews from fellow Yelpers and walking by it on my way to a concert a while back. However, Yelp says it's not for kids, so we've stayed away unnecessarily. After a couple of experiences with actual kid-unfriendly restaurants where high chairs aren't provided, I decided to call and ask whether there were kiddie accommodations. Not only does this place have high chairs, it also has a dedicated kid's menu with a selection sure to turn impressionable young ones into discerning foodies. My husband and I decided to share the Shrimp and Grits and the French Toast Pudding with tres leches, maple, cranberry, blueberries, raspberry, and a delicious whipped cream. The shrimps on the Shrimp and Grits were perfectly succulent and the tomato jam was so delicious. However, the grits were practically non-existent. It was a very itsy-bitsy portion size for $16, especially for something I regularly make at home for less than $4 a portion with more shrimp. The French Toast Pudding had a great combination of flavors and we didn't even have to touch the maple syrup because it was delicious as is. My initial impression is that while the food is well-prepared and delicious, the portion size to price ratio is a bit off. Interesting place out in what was once the boonies and is now the center of south Broomfield (almost next to the parking lot entryway at the Events Center). When we found out it was a Kevin Taylor creation we were excited. If you ever ate at KT's at the Opera House or at the Teatro Hotel, or where we go when we see a show at the DCPA--his Limelight Cafe (or what used to be one of my favorite lunch spots in town until they closed it down for the renovation of the Denver Art Museum--Palates) you understand that Mr. Taylor knows how to run a restaurant. Hickory & Ash however is a new kind of KT venture. Think of it as a suburban au curante steakhouse/drinking/gathering place. It's got some style, some great energy, some neat people. It's not expensive as steakhouses go and was well worth the price. My recollection is that our 8 oz filets were just under $40 each. The sides were small but sufficient, just not very impressive (I'm talking to you Mr Macaroni and Cheese, and to you Ms. Asparagus). The wine was very reasonably priced as were the desserts, but not especially memorable. The bottom line is that if you want a deal on a good to very good steakhouse dinner you'll find it at H & K. But this is not a 5 star restaurant. (And there's nothing wrong with that). Would we return? If we were in the neighborhood and wanted something we'd seen on the menu...you bet. Would we make a special trip out from downtown Denver just to have dinner there? No. But was it fun and satisfying for the price? Absolutely. So rock-on Mr/Ms T. My boyfriend and I went here for the first time last night for an early Valentine's Day date. The food and service were both excellent. Both of us ordered drinks. The cocktail menu was geared toward whiskey drinkers (which I am not). I ordered the only rum drink on the menu, and it was interesting and pretty strong. It was my least favorite item that was ordered, but I think that's a me thing. We started off with the beef tartare, which was fantastic. Many time, I find the dish bland, but this one was lemon-y and smokey. Definitely the best tartare I've had. It was also a generous portion, so we weren't fighting over two bites. I ordered the short ribs, and I ate everything on the plate except the smoked tomato's (my boyfriend loved them, but I'm not a fan of sundried tomatoes). I could've eaten a bowl of the cheddar polenta on its own. It was that good. My boyfriend ordered the corned beef stroganoff. It may have been the best creamy pasta dish I've ever eaten. The noodles are homemade and the bacon in the dish is thick cut. Finally, we ordered the Valentine's Day dessert, which consisted of a little brownie with chocolate mousse, strawberries, and hazelnuts with a raspberry heart on top. It looked beautiful and was delicious. We both said we could've eaten 100 of the raspberry hearts. Very good meal that was very reasonably priced for a special night out. Almost every dish was under $30. Additionally, their sandwich section has options for when you don't want to spend too much on an evening (under $15). You could probably also get away with eating some apps. Finally, our server was great. I'm very indecisive and asked a ton of questions. She was able to point us to the best things on the menu. I believe it's quite impossible to have a dining experience better than the one you'll be having at Hickory and Ash. This establishment at a new development may escape your notice unless you know where to look. The residential track is so new that you wonder whether it is inhabited, but there is definitely life around the restaurant, and a good life it is. Their famous pastrami appetizer is so good that any better should be illegal. I had the pork chop, and the applewood preparation enhances the existing hint of natural sweetness of the meat. But not to be overwhelmed by the sweetness, the creamy grits adds the buttery dimension that is necessary to restore the balance of the overall taste. The roasted brussel sprouts offers additional texture to each bite. Service is fast and genuinely friendly. Unfortunately, we have no room for dessert this time, and it'll be hard to return on a regular basis because we live a thousand miles away. We'll always have this memory as part of our Denver experience. ADDENDUM: For all those reviewers who complained about the cost and portion size, I thought the entrees are priced very reasonably, and at least for me, this is what quality tastes like. read more

Salty..... very mediocre. We stopped in after making last minute reservations for 7:30 pm. Friendly greeter, seated right away. Drink orders taken almost right after we were sat. Low lighting, but needs a bit of a cleaning, we were sat by the widows and the blinds are covered in dust. We ordered the lobster bisque to start with and it was ok. Runny for a bisque, lacking lobster and it was so salty I couldn't eat more than 6 spoon fulls. They serve a wheat sour dough bread with a salted herb butter spread ..... probably my favored part of the meal.... I order the filet with mashed potatoes on the side and it came with a barbecue like sauce ..... I order the filet medium and it was cooked correctly , again very salty! Mashed potatoes were very runny and salty. I would say I give it 6 out of 10! Decent but not amazing ! read more

Unfortunately, we weren't in it for the drinks. we were hungry. looking through Yelp and some places nearby the hotel, we stopped here to get some lunch. And I'm glad we did. I had the brisket sandwich and girlfriend had the H&A Steak Burger. And both were just perfect. The steak burger was a large portion of hamburger cooked medium well, with a big slab of bacon slapped in there with lettuce and tomato. There's a certain blend of spices and sauces going on in there that gave it that extra savory flavor... but I can't get into too much detail on it because I only had a bite of it. I actually had the brisket sandwich. Now, I've had a fair share of brisket in many places in California. The lavender brisket at the lavender festival. The brisket at a number of asian restaurants in Garden Grove, California. And even the brisket at my own workplace, which people swear is the best stuff they've tasted ever. Hickory & Ash has a brisket that is softer, and my only critique is that the sauce needs to get toned down so the flavor of the brisket can come through more. If they are using the marbled decor part of the meat, then they can certainly lighten up with the sauce and allow the fatty parts that have cooked through the sinews create the flavor sensation. If they are using more the lean area, then I understand the usage of the sauce more liberally. The bread itself was soft, but the outside needed a little more crisp like a bahn mi style. The salad was perfectly coated with the blue cheese dressing, and still retained a crispness that you could crunch into. But these are small critiques. They really don't affect the overall feel and vibe for the service and quality of the food, because they are only minor points that I have particular preferences on, but aren't rules set in gold. Staff, ambiance, and food were wonderful. My mother-in-law and I were trying to find a different restaurant originally, but found out was closed when we arrived. On a whim, I pulled up seafood restaurants and found that Hickory and Ash was only 4 minutes away from where we were. We both loved our accidental adventure. Our server was patient and kind enough to go over the menu. I ordered the shrimp and my mother-in-law ordered the fish sandwich. When it arrived at the table, she was stunned at the enormous size her meal! So, I asked if she wanted to trade. The fish sandwich did not disappoint, and she raved about the shrimp! Wow, that a find! My wife and I went based on the reviews and had an awesome meal. I had an 8 oz grass fed filet and creamed spinach, my wife had mussels and lobster bisque. The bisque was tasty and not too heavy.. my wife loved the mussels, and my filet was so tender and prepared perfectly. Oh, and the spinach was surprisingly light too, but it was unique in a great way. And dessert had a theme. Overall it was a great restaurant. Service was excellent and the bread and butter was very good. I got the short ribs but they were very salty and not as tender as they could have been. The broccolini was so hard i couldnt eat it. My partner got the salmon dish was was amazing. The appetizer portions are very small, $15 for 5 small potatoes and virtually no sauce was a disappointment. The french cake was pretty dry and again very small. This is a great place for MEAT. Four of us came to celebrate a birthday and even though we couldn't get a reservation by phone, when we arrived a5:45 we were able to be seated inside. We started with mussles which had a thicker broth that begged for bread dunking . Among the 5 of us we had the beef tenderloin, pork tenderloin and the short ribs.
