My Dad loves the Cá He stewed in Fish sauce for 10 Hours made with Redtail Tinfoil Barb Fish. The Bones are soft and fall off the meat due to the slow cooking process. Since nobody wants to cook for ten hours today then the best alternative would be Hien Thanh Restaurant. My uncle and auntie from Switzerland really enjoyed the Cá He because they can't find it in Zurich. Another family favorite is the Cá Lu Du mon ngon mien tay which is Fried saltwater fish and bones are crunchy goodness easily swallowed too. Canh Chua Cá was too sweet today but it was decent and edible when paired with the salty Cá Kho To which is catfish cooked in fish sauce and flavorful brown sugar. The Bland purple slippery yam soup goes well with salty dish such as the Cá He and the Cá Lu Du fried fish. Went here to eat with 3 other people. It was busier than expected for a Wednesday. Tables are situated close to each other -- no social distancing or mask enforced. The server took our order, wrote it down, and still ended up bringing out the wrong things. When we pointed it out, he just shrugged and took it away. Service is as minimal as possible. For food, we ordered: bun bo hue, hu tieu kho, and 2x banh beo Here's what we got: rau ma, 1x water, and a Thai tea for drinks. For our food, we received the bun bo hue, hu tieu kho, and 1x banh xeo. We had to ask for the 2nd banh xeo, ask to him to bring our correct drink, and ask for utensils/napkins. The food wasn't good. Subpar at best. Probably the worst bun bo hue and banh xeo in OC I've ever had. I didn't personally try the hu tieu, but the person who ate it said it wasn't good either. TLDR; Bad food, bad service. Great spot for com phan aka family style meals. The recipes have the same flavor profiles as mines and my husband's families. Coming here reminds us of our family's home cooked meals. We usually order canh chua ca, ca kho, ca Lu du, and rau muong. There is a stuffed tofu that is also delicious. Parking is usually almost full but we can get a spot without having to make a second circle around the lot. Whether we order in viet or English, service is always great. So for those with viet-lish or just English, have no concerns here. There is usually one server busting ass to get to everyone and doing a good job at that. My mom has very particular requests and she wants things a certain way. The servers have no issues with her requests and always attentive and kind to her.
