I called ahead and asked if I had to have a reservation, I was told no they take walk ins. When I arrived I was told something different. However I ate at the bar. I ordered the filet, add on scallops with mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly but very bland. No flavor. Scallops were great but $24 for two my side salad was just greens and tomatoes. I would say the best part of my meal was the mashed potatoes and my two glasses of Cabernet. I thought the food was way overpriced this was $185 my boyfriend didn't eat he had one drink. This restaurant does not live up to it's reputation. It was very pricey with mediocre food. I ordered the crab cakes, which were ample and filling, but tasted like canned crab meat and progreso bread crumbs. The menu stated "with horseradish aioli sauce" but I saw none. When asked the server she snipped, " it's underneath". They were dry and I certainly didn't taste any horseradish. The dishes came out quick too, which made me think they just are all prepared way ahead of time, and that they wanted to turn the table fast since we didn't order drinks or wine . The server got snippy when we questioned her about the crab cakes. Asked for more bread and never delivered. She also failed to let anyone know the price of the specials, she also slapped the bill on the table. The place was large and crowded which wasn't conducive to a pleasant meal. I love coming here for brunch and love bringing friends. The food is yummy, we had the cinnamon roll, chicken and waffles (I've had better but this was definitely good), my friend had the She Crab soup as well and that was a highlight, I will definitely get that in the future it was the best I've had. We visited high Cotton to celebrate a career change. When we told the waitress that we were celebrating, we were given champagne and a kind. Congratulations! It was so thoughtful. Also, at the end of the meal they gave us a couple of free, espresso martinis, which I thought was very sweet. The dining experience had its ups and downs. We got the mussels to start, and they were hands-down, the best mussels I have ever had in my life. The broth was so flavorful and buttery, and we could have drank the whole thing. Truly, I will be back for those mussels! Unfortunately, our entrées were very disappointing. My husband got the halibut and it had no flavor at all. We wish we kept the mussels broth to pour it over the fish. Like it really did not have any flavor at all. The steak was good and had a nice flavor, but it came out room temperature. It did not have any heat at all. Either prefer my steak to come out sizzling! That did not happen. High Cotton was good but it was the most expensive restaurant that we have eaten at in Charleston and it fell very short compared to other more fair-priced places in the city. We had the mussels (which were pretty good- that was the highlight); Brussels sprouts; the filet, and the she-crab soup. We tried several she-crab soups during this trip. This one was the least desirable. I don't know if it was just bland or simply not as good as the others, but I would not be ordering that again. Their recipe is definitely missing something. We celebrated a 50th birthday at the Sunday music-infused brunch and has a great time. The music was pretty loud- bluegrass/pop with strings, which I love- but I have a hearing loss, so we were able to get a table furthest from the live music. Great view out the beautiful windows- so much light! Our group of 6 started with the 3-juice option champaign mimosas and the poppy seed muffins- amazing! There were a couple of vegetarian options on the menu and we all enjoyed our meals. I had the french toast and gave away my bacon. No room for dessert, unfortunately. This year I was delighted to NOT be cooking (my second favorite pastime after playing with Sterling). So delighted in fact, that I made reservations 6 weeks in advance to ensure I would have no hiccups. That worked. I got a few calls here and there to confirm but it was a blessing. My wife and I arrived a few minutes before our 6pm reservation, but we were in our seats at 6pm. That was almost the highlight of the evening. Our server was attentive but a little slow. Her assistant forgot to bring us bread for the table, so I had to address the circulating Expediter for it magically appear seconds later. Our appetizer order came promptly from the kitchen - baked oysters with Brie - and they were really good, after I asked they be "rebaked" (soupy baked oysters are not a thing). I indulged in an unorthodox meal of swordfish in Beurre Blanc sauce with shrimp or langostinos and fingering potatoes. I was somewhat disappointed in the presentation (see photo) but it rocked my Thanksgiving meal. My wife had the traditional Thanksgiving meal (again see photo), and she raved about how moist the turkey was, but it was room temperature, as were the other accompaniments, and gravy was scarce. We ordered a side of sweet potatoes which we both agree were outstanding but not hot enough to serve. One thing we both agree on was the poor presentation. Seriously, I'm not being overly critical here, but for a restaurant owned by the Halls, it just didn't meet the bar. A simple sprinkle of color (parsley), or small sprig of thyme, rosemary or sage would have gone a long way towards disguising the dollop of dressing accompanying the turkey, distracting one from the thought of what $40 could have provided elsewhere. The Apple Crisp (or crumble) pie was a hit! We took it home to enjoy it with ice cream and Rum. I'm not trying to disparage High Cotton. I visited there before the Hall family became owners, and it was marginal despite the advertised "stellar cuisine". Billy Hall's visit to the table on a Holiday night was special. But there is still room for improvement and I'm certain he will make a call to action. read more

For brunch, we had the French toast and the shrimp & grits with sides of bacon & sweet potato hash...all were phenomenal!! Shrimp & grits are best we ever had & French toast was top tier!! Brianna was our server & she was the sweetest! Upon leaving, my girlfriend wanted to look around the restaurant & Alpha (the general manager) walked over to us & offered to show us around the restaurant...he pointed out the table from "The Notebook" (which my girlfriend loves), & upon hearing we were coming back for dinner, he looked up our reservation & put a note in reserving that table for us! How nice & wonderful of him! He was a truly kind & friendly man. When we were seated for dinner, they already had a glass of complimentary champagne at the table, just because!! For dinner, we had filets, asparagus, mashed potatoes & lobster Mac & cheese, which were all amazing again! The filets had the perfect char! Our server for dinner was Rebecca, who was very nice & did a great job too! Upon leaving, we ran into Brianna, who had been there since brunch & she was still just as sweet as ever! It has a more upscale setting than other hot spots in the quarter. We had a friendly welcome and fine service throughout the evening. Nice pacing. We enjoyed the crispy fried calamari with a marinara sauce and lemon aïoli ($17) and the Prince Edward Island Mussels ($22) for appetizers. The mussels come in an interesting white wine and Creole mustard cream sauce with grilled bread for tasty dipping. We shared the East Coast Halibut ($56) for the entree. It was moist and came with Orzo pasta. Wines by the glass were $17 and up. High Cotton is higher priced that others along East Bay but worth trying for the overall experience. read more

Probably the best restaurant we dined at in Charleston. The ambiance is a little more formal, but service was great. Next time, I would likely sit in the bar area where they had jazz music. The live music is always great. A MUST-GET is the mussels. My favorite sides are the lobster mac, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. The scallops are also amazing, and the lobster tail was to die for. Eggs Benedict were ok - nothing special but we always appreciate when they cook our eggs as requested (super runny). Crab cakes weren't all that and a bit mushy. High Cotton was such a fantastic experience! The restaurant is absolutely beautiful and charming inside. We got lucky enough to be seated at the table in the corner (the same table from the notebook scene where Allie gets engaged). The food was fantastic! Honestly everything on the menu sounded delicious it was hard to choose. We ordered the scallops, and the filet special (which included scallops and truffle butter). Both were cooked to perfection and tasted amazing! We got the lobster Mac and cheese side for fun and man that was delicious. Highly recommend! For dessert we ordered the buttermilk pie and we got to taste the strawberry cheesecake. Both were perfect! I still dream about that cheesecake If you get dessert make sure to get an espresso martini... it wasn't called "world famous" for nothing, the chocolate rim is to die for! High Cotton has been on my list of places to try. The Restaurant Week Menu allowed you to select 3 courses for $55, which was a great deal since one entree can add up to just as much. The sweet potato bisque was good but it wasn't anything special. I wish something was included with it to add more texture. I ordered the filet mignon, which was cooked medium, and the waiter made sure it was exactly how I liked it before leaving. Unfortunately, the steak also wasn't rave worthy. It definitely needed some seasoning to it because it was very plain. My boyfriend ordered the pan seared salmon and said it was very good. The key lime pie was amazing! We also ordered a chocolate cake that was also amazing. The service and ambience was great but sadly I did not think the menu items I tried were anything to come back to. read more

Nassar and Brian not only took great care of us, but we're very friendly and engaging. Between the 4 of us, one had the Filet, one had the duck, one had scallops, and one had Rack of Lamb. All were perfectly cooked and tremendously tasty. Sides (esp., Brussels sprouts) were excellent. Cocktails were on point. If you want a very special experience and great food, go to High Cotton (or their flagship steakhouse, Hall's Chophouse). You won't be disappointed. We enjoyed our meal at High Cotton, which was recommended to us before we went to Charleston for a trip. We shared a wedge salad at the bar prior to our reservation because we got there early. The ambience is classy and the staff is formal while still being friendly and polite. The serving sizes weren't huge, and we were encouraged to order sides, but we just weren't that hungry. The food itself as well prepared. I've never tasted duck quite like this and was impressed with the flavor, texture, and the mashed potatoes that complemented the dish so well. I ordered an Irish coffee for dessert, which hit the spot. I would like to visit this restaurant one day when I am hungrier to sample more side dishes. It was a nice touch when the manager came over to ask us how our meal was. He seemed genuinely interested and was very friendly.
