And I ordered the traditional salad. The prices have gone up a lot since I was last here. My dad said that his salad was lacking chicken it was just batter. This is probably one of Houston's best restaurants and that is because it has been CONSISTENT for years. The service is excellent, the place is cosy, the food is fantastic, the crowds are even better. Of course, it's always packed, so make your reservation in advance. The "manager" Hannah was completely rude to us while dining at Hillside. We ate lunch at Hillside with a group of friends. My daughter received a Facetime call from her son. The waitress told her that Facetime calls or videos were against their policy. Understandable. My daughter was off the phone and a few minutes later someone brought a card to our table with the policy. We asked why she brought the policy when the phone call ended and the waitress had already spoken to us about the policy. Hannah then came over and said she had been timing the call and that it lasted 5 minutes. I told her my grandson is special needs so he was checking in. Hannah said, "So you're going to pull that card." The waitress was not friendly and Hannah was completely out of line. She clearly needs to work in another line of work other than customer service. Hillstone = Houston's restaurant. It's the same thing. I may be biased because I worked here for several years, but that should tell you how good the food is... I never got sick of it! Everything is made from scratch with top notch ingredients and while the menu is not incredibly extensive, everything is done very, very well. My top recommendations would be the Thai Steak & Noodle Salad (add greens), the Chicago Style Spinach Dip (probably the most ordered item, must have), the French Dip (extra lean medium rare is the best), Tortilla Soup (Thursdays), and the Key Lime Pie will knock your socks off. Also, the restaurant is not good for parties 7 and over. Don't go and be disappointed when you're broken up into different tables, you've been warned! read more

I have been going to Houston's since I was a child and I'm now in my early 30s. So many items have been removed or are not allowed to be ordered to go since the company changed the restaurant to Hillstone. This used to be my absolute favorite restaurant and it's a shame that all these changes have led me to not even go here in the last year or two. And the last time I did go, the food portions were smaller and some of the foods, for example the fries, did not taste the same and were clearly a different recipe. I don't get the change because Houston's always had good business, quality service, and of course high quality food. When a place serves me extraordinary crab cakes, I will say nothing bad about it. This place has done it and I really appreciate it. When I left LA I was sad about leaving all those wonderful restaurants (and my friends too). I pictured myself living without my favorite crab cakes from Houston (now all called Hillstone) and the picture turned black and white. I found out that this location also had crab cakes on their menu (as not all Hillstones do) I was very excited to try it. Finally my chance came a couple weeks ago and it did not let me know (maybe even let me up). Everything in this place is just as good (if not better) as the one I left in Pasadena CA. I have been back once and the quality was consistent. I also loved the grilled artichoke there too (my husband's all-time favorites). So. I took my father here for his birthday tonight because he is a true carnivore. We made a reservation for 7:15, showed up at 7:25, and they sat us closer to around 7:45. Our server was Jon and he was really polite, but it was very busy and service was sub par...they moved very quickly but service could be better. I wished they were more attentive. We ordered two appetizers: the spinach dip (great!), and the smoked salmon (superb!). We wanted the fried oysters in place of the spinach dip but they ran out! At 8 o'clock! So disappointing. Sorry not to be unique but we all ordered the same thing: BBQ Pork Ribs. They were very tender and the sauce has a spicy/sweet taste. I recommend. We ordered dessert: walnut apple cobbler. It came with ice cream and was meh. Took forever to come out. It would have been 4 stars had the service been better, they sat us when we got there, and they weren't out of an appetizer. Manager handled a bartender mismanaged order terribly on an over $100.00 cheque for one person. I had order a scotch " neat" and it came on ice. I pointed this out to the waitress and she acknowledged the error and said she would bring me a new one. The new one came in a chilled glass. I could only assume it was the same drink with the cube removed. A neat scotch mean room temperature. The manager simply took the drink fee off my bill ( which I returned ) and robotically said " so sorry I will talk to the bartender ." The highlight of this restaurant is the Belle Glos pinot noir. Try a glass. Especially if you get lucky enough to get the first pour - you'd enjoy a gem. I had ribs yesterday, and they were blase. The skinny fries and the horseradish-infused cole slaw that went with it were good though. We asked the waitress to pick between a key lime pie and a tres leches for us. She brought the tres leches - and I'm hard to please when it comes to tres leches. That was a 2.5 for me. Excellent service. Ok food. Stuffily dark ambiance. I love their spare ribs and also their salmon. Their portions are very generous, you will not leave the restaurant hungry. Decor is nice, mostly decorated in dark woods. Houston's reminds me of former Houston Rocket Chandler Parsons: consistently good and occasionally great, but never really a threat to unseat some of the proven all-star players...er, steakhouses in the area. And much like Chandler Parsons, I'm not sure if the performance justifies the steep price tag. The rich and creamy Chicago-style Spinach & Artichoke dip is delicious, but be honest: have you ever had one that wasn't? The California Burger was tasty and the mustard honey and avocado gave it a new dimension, but it left me still a bit hungry and unsatisfied (but maybe that's just me). The Iron Skillet Beans are superb, well-seasoned and hearty with a sweet meaty broth. My experience with their steaks is that they are huge and cooked to a temperature about 5-10% less than requested. I ordered medium-rare last time and the meat arrived with a soft deep-red center. That's completely fine by me, but if you like your meat on the less-bloody side, you'd be safer off ordering medium or medium-well. The Roasted Prime Rib was gargantuan, with thick streaks of fat running through. It was pretty good, but you can do much better for $34. The slow-cooked pork ribs are probably the best thing I've tried off their menu though, tender with a smoky, caramelized exterior. The venue is a bit dark for my tastes, but the service is fantastic. To their credit, they truly want to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. The first time I visited, I had to wait 15-20 minutes despite having a reservation. We didn't complain or anything, but the manager dropped by our table and offered to comp our wine and appetizer. While there are surely more polished steakhouses out there from a food perspective, I know I'll find myself back at Houston's soon in the near future. read more

My husband and I stopped in for lunch yesterday after furniture shopping. We were both wearing nice shorts and nice shirts and we also had nice sandals on. We were told that we could not be seated for lunch because we had open toe shoes on. We do live in Houston, Texas and it was 104 degrees outside. We just came here to eat an late lunch/early dinner. We have been coming here since it was Houston's and we will never be back and tell everyone good luck! We walked in with the restaurant 20% full and my husband was on his phone talking quietly on a business call and they would not seat us till he was off. I should first say I had to tell the hostess hello first as she was talking to another waitress ignoring us. We then proceed to table and sit down. My husband quickly called back to let the person know he would call back only to have the manager come up to our table to tell us that all calls are to be handled in lobby. She said that there policy is in place not to distract customers. Well, we had no one around us and it's before 5pm. She was completely rude and asked if we would like to leave if we're not happy. On Monday, May 25th, 2020, Memorial Day, my son and I went to Houston's Restaurant, located on 4848 Kirby Drive in Houston, Texas. A frequent diner and one of our favorite establishments, I am extremely angry and disappointed in how we were treated on this recent trip. While Houston's claims an upscale atmosphere, the clientele is usually dressed in casual clothing. On this particular day, we were told there was a 15-minute wait to be seated. While sitting in the waiting area, the hostess presented my son with a DRESS CODE card, stating that his attire was too casual and this card was essentially a warning. I explained that as a frequent diner, I have never heard of this dress code, my son has worn this attire there multiple times (shorts, long sleeve t-shirt, white socks, and white Nike sneakers), and I was upset that he received this card, as other diners were wearing inappropriate clothing (e.g. cut-off shorts, flip-flops, tank tops, beachwear, etc.) and were not reprimanded. I spoke to Jennifer, the manager and maitre'd, explaining my displeasure with what I felt was my son being singled out, and she brushed off my concern, stating that he was given a card because he was too casual. I then spoke to the general manager, and while he was more professional, he couldn't explain or care to explain why my son received a dress code card, while other inappropriately dressed patrons continued to be seated with no issue or reprimand. It's unfortunate and I hate to say this, but I believe my son was discriminated against because he is black and they did not like his "type" of dress in their establishment. I returned a few days later to get a business card from all parties involved (Manager Jennifer and the GM) and spoke to the Executive GM Jeremy Zink. I explained what happened on my previous visit, and while speaking to him, I pointed out to him at that moment, diners that were not in dress code (a young man in terry cloth shorts and Gucci pool slides). I saw no dress code cards being handed out. He had nothing to say. I'm extremely upset that this has happened and disturbed that being long-time clients and supporting them during the COVID crisis has meant absolutely nothing. I will take my money where it will be appreciated. Your implicit bias is showing and you should do better. read more

I legit love this place. Almost every Sunday for the past month I order a dings chicken sandwich Togo. But when dining in the crab cakes & the Hawaiian ribeye are a must. The crab cakes are alllll meat, which I love.. not all the extra stuffing like other places, & the ribeye.. soooo juicy and the Hawaiian marinade makes the steak have this unbelievable flavor. You really have to try it. Another long time favorite is the Thai steak and noodle salad, which has the Hawaiian ribeye in it which could by why I love it. It's Houston's. I have never had a bad meal here - ever. I can say the service is impeccable and given their busy times on weekends, eves and every single time I have ever been, they handle it well. The hostess remembered me and came looking for me once the table was ready despite not having my name or a little buzzy thingie to alert me. How on earth do they do that? When covid-19 shut down dining in, restaurants like Houston's begged the community to order takeout and support their establishment and staff. I ordered takeout several times. I called today to order and the rep that answered the phone was incredibly rude, acted like she didn't know what a "curbside" order was, told me that my options were not available to-go because they were too much of a pain to package, and that there was a mandatory 15% fee added to all take out orders now. So much for loyalty and respect for customers that supported you in your time of need. To hell with that now that your open for in house dining huh. A solid 4 stars. I always sit at the bar, so I cannot speak to the service in the main dining area but I always have friendly, efficient service from the bartenders. The food is consistent and delicious. Portions are generous, and I ALWAYS have about two more meals worth of food to take home. A friend and I went here for lunch on a Thursday. Service and food were good. We both ordered the cobb salad. This is a large salad with lots of stuff in it. This may be only time I would say I could use more lettuce. There is so much other great stuff in the salad, but it is really good - just sayin. What a disappointing experience at one of my favorite restaurants that I have frequented for years because of the excellent food and service. My daughter and I stopped by at 3:30 in the afternoon (not crowded) and because of COVID, we wanted to sit on the patio outside and literally all we wanted was a cocktail, spinach artichoke dip and French fries. I was told that I could only order cocktails and starters if seated outside and that French fries are not a starter. My five star rating is for the prime rib -- that's all we've ever gotten here. Prime rib is often spotty, yet we've eaten here 25-30 times and only once was the prime rib below par. Unless you're willing to wait a long time you need to get here before 11:30 am or make a reservation. After that is becomes jammed. Even with a reservation you'll probably have to wait a few minutes. They used to have a golf cart with driver to bring you from the back of the large parking lot, but the last few times we've been there he wasn't around. They're pricy. The food was just average. Pretty much similar to Salt Grass. The difference between the two was the sweetness. Rib here was a bit sweeter. One plus is the ambiance.
