I came here to try the lobster and sticky rice dish after drooling over the pics taken by my follow Yelpers, and I was not disappointed! The pictures don't do the dish justice as one would assume its a personal serving size. Misleading! It's actually a gigantic portion meant to share! Unfortunately I didn't know this so I ordered it for 2 plus other dishes. Luckily the waitress gave us a heads up on the size so we were able to cancel the other items. Now, you may think I'm like every other person out there who loves lobsters. The funny thing is, I rarely eat lobsters or crabs! I never cared for the taste of lobster, and I ate too much crab growing up that I eventually developed almost a dislike for it. However, the pictures looked so alluring that I couldn't resist trying. I thought it'd be "ok" at best, but I was proven wrong after the first bite. It was a "holly shiz" kind of moment as i was not prepared for the deliciousness of this dish! The meat was so tender and sweet (the poor lobster was alive and kicking just moments before) and the sauce/seasoning coated the shells were finger licking good! And yes, I shamelessly licked and sucked on the shells, making sure I got to every nook and cranny as to not waste any of the sauce coating the pieces. The lobster I had was 2.5 lbs, plus an additional charge for the sticky rice which ended up costing nearly $55 just for this dish alone, making it a very expensive lunch. So be prepared to shell out some Canadian bucks, or bring a group to split the costs. The only complaint I have is that there is too much corn in the sticky rice. Some mornings I wake up and crave wonton noodle soup. Since I generally don't get to act on such impulses immediately, they build up over a few days until I can take it no more. Then I go to Ho Yuen Kee. In addition to a bowl each of SLICED FISH CONGEE ($5.75) and PRESERVED EGG & SALTED PORK CONGEE ($4.50), which were both fantastic (it's comforting like, um, mashed potatoes or spaghetti and meatballs for other people), we ordered CHILI MINCED PORK ON NOODLES, which was served with a bowl of broth and cooked lettuce. The meat sauce was spot on and the thin noodles were phenomenal. Since we were a group of four, our waiter suggested we order a bowl of WONTONS IN SOUP ($4.95; more wontons, no noodles) so that we could each have more wontons. Good suggestion! And, folks, these wontons might as well have been har gao in soup, because they were packed with two prawns each! Delicious. Our elderly friend wanted the restaurant's signature dish, LOBSTER ON RICE ($56.45 for a 2.5-pound crustacean). Of course it was good, and you get the entire lobster chopped up into smaller, manageable pieces, but I found the meat to be rather chewy and the sticky rice not sticky enough. Furthermore, seasoned as it was with corn kernels, chives, and some tobiko, the flavor of the rice kept reminding me of the flavoring in Mr. Noodle instant noodle cups. Go test it out for yourself: have Mr. Noodle the night before; then go to Ho Yuen Kee. Tell me I'm wrong. But we had an altogether lovely meal and we all ate way too much. Stopped by with a large group for lunch. Parking was relatively easy (in the nearby 2 hour parking lots since the street parking is only 1 hour). Waitress and staff was very friendly and efficient. It's my first came here. I saw the review and it's very popular lobster with sticky rice, so I going to try with my family but honestly for me it's not very delicious. It's regular. We ordered 5 dishes: lobster and sticky rice, crab with chilli and garlic, a half fried chicken, salted broccoli with mushroom and seafood chow mien. Our opinion is that the lobster was a long time in the fish tank because in the claw part and another part there was almost no meat. It was thin. The cost is $ 239.04 with tax and tip. It's very expensive only for 5 dishes. I tried in other restaurant and normally spend $120 to $180. I never to try here again. This is going to be the first and the last time. The service was good. Didn't get to try the house special sticky rice w/ crab since I was neither a big fan of sticky rice nor crab (did you say "WHAT!?"- yes, I know). It was the gf's call but it was too much and expensive for 2, so we opted for the poor man's lunch: fried rice, wonton/dumpling noodles, and chinese donuts. The dried scallop/egg fried rice was so good. It looked white and bland but damn it was hella good. Flavorful but not too oily or overly spiced. The chopped green onion threw in last minute made each bite fun with a crunch. The wanton/dumpling noodle was pretty good but not spectacular; I personally don't like my noodles too thin; they were thinner than my hair, but it was a genius choice to go with the fried chinese donuts. Best chinese donuts I had yet, tasted fresh, crispy and crunchy outside, dense and bready but not too bready inside. Soak that goody soup right up while staying crunchy. Bill came out ~$27-30 for 3 dishes, not bad. The fried rice was really good but didn't know why it was so expensive, $14-$15. Service is what you can expect from a chinese place. We were hosted her by our Son's girlfriend ( thank you .. thank you ).. we arrived early for our 7:15pm reservations and, yes, our table was awaiting us..they are famous for their Lobster or crab on sticky rice ( aka Glutinous rice).. we got a 2 pounder and it was plenty for the five of us along with sweet and sour pork.. beef tenderloin with deep fried milk... pork belly with pickled vegetables.. and of course Pea Sprouts with oyster mushroom.. healthy portions and by the time we left they were starting on their third turnover .. oh coincidentally they are celebrating their 25th anniversary..have to make a mental note to not to allow for 20 years to roll through before the next go round read more

Came here to try the famous lobster and it didn't disappoint. We arrived on around 645pm on a Saturday night without a reservation so we did have to wait ~15 mins for a table. No biggie. The restauarant was very busy with just about every table occupied. Food- Lobster- very good. Loved it. And yes, as everyone says it is not cheap. We had a 2.5lb lobster for around $75 CD. Zhou/Shrimp congee- not bad but a fly, yes a fly in our food is a big negative. Thats kinda inexcusable to me. You ji (steamed chicken)- Really good! Loved it. Mixed buddah vegetables- loved it. Overall I thought the food was pretty darn good here and service surprisingly good-- surprisingly good because the restaurant was so busy. -1* for the fly in the congee -1* for the $65 lobster (which I really liked but was just a tad too expensive) = 3*. The place is a bit rundown looking and the staff seems a bit unorganized at times. But it gets busy even on a weekdays. I made a reso just in case. It seems like most diners here are regulars. I came here 'cause of their lobster sticky rice. It was good! Lobster was nicely cooked and the sticky rice was perfectly seasoned. Loved this dish. The other items we got were mediocre at best; salt & pepper shrimp (very bland), house special chicken, ma po tofu (it was not ma po style), ling cod with chile bean (it was basically deep fried fish with tofu), beef & broccoli. Unfortunately, I did not get to experience the lobster fried rice that everyone was ranting about since it is suppose to be one of the best things in the restaurant. Instead, I was out with mom's side of the family for lunch. I ordered the chicken chow mein and also had some dried oysters with century year old egg congee. What I like about the restaurant was that they are willing do hundreds of combinations of noodle soup combos from the wontons, water dumplings to the funny animal parts most people would not consider eating. The food was cooked really well by the chefs as I will give props to them. However, our waiter was kind of disappointing. I will give him a pass that he is new and it can be very challenging when there is 10 people in our party. However, he seems very shy and uncomfortable with the job and it would be better off there was an experienced person taking our order instead of him, but then again, it did not matter. A classic standout Chinese resto here for many years, one of my dad's favourite for 'Sui Gao', super-sized shrimp wontons in a nice broth, if you're into it. Personally, I'm not a soup person unless it's ramen lol but I do hear others saying it's good. My regular dish is the beef w/ egg sauce on flat noodles, quite a hearty meal, always hits the right spot. And their sweet tofu in a bowl is also popular, just need to order when you sit down, takes a while. Since I come here for lunch so frequently, never tried their dinner, but I do hear they're known for their Alaskan Crab. One of the "institution" of VAN Cantonese cuisine. Haven't been here for better part of two decades. Food, both variety and quality, has gone upmarket; but still relatively affordable. Everybody orders the sticky rice dish, and so did we. Fresh enough, tasty enough; but maybe add some peas to the rice, and minimal MSG. Great taste, except those sticky rice weren't very sticky, if at all. Really, what are they? Sticky or short grain? We also ordered the Soya Fried Prawns, Cooked Chicken Cantonese Style, Steamed Scallops on half-shelves, Ling Cod Duo (soup and stir-fry fillet), plus veg. They were all very well done, good portion size, except for the "Duo". Why? Because they ran out of the fillet, and we had to change order. Thus we added the Ling Cod Head & Belly with Black Bean Sauce. No bad, just a bit overcooked. Heard the wait-staff has ownership shares in the place. True or not? But they sure behave that way. Which is a good thing for a Chinese restaurant, right?! They did throw in dessert, nice touch. Altogether a nice nostalgic revisit of an "institution". And I thought they only serve wanton noodles. The lobster fried rice was really hyped up for me and we almost didn't get a chance to experience it, but luckily we did and it was my favorite dish of my weekend trip in Vancouver! We originally were going for dinner, but decided to try lunch there instead since we wanted to head back home earlier. Even without a reservation, we only had to wait about 15 minutes for our table of 4. Also, there is free WiFi so it was easy to pass the time waiting. Each pound of the lobster fried rice costs $30 and the smallest size they serve is 2 lbs. Even though the waitress recommended 3 lbs for the 3 of us, we went for 2 lbs and that was the perfect amount for us 3 girls. They even show you the live lobster which is pretty cool. The lobster fried rice was even more delicious than I anticipated. We all happily tucked in and got our fingers really dirty. Just order it and you'll see what I mean. read more

Ho Yuen Kee has two highlights - Lobster sticky rice and the wintermelon soup bowl(delicious and gigantic, and make sure you call 24 hours in advance to order one). Beyond that, I find the rest of the menu a bit plain. But I guess most people come here for lobster, so everything else is just byplay. Makes sense. Like most other Cantonese restaurants, they use tenderizers to their meat - i.g. beef, which doesn't really bother me, although my husband has stated a few times that he's not fond of it. read more

Gigantic Won Tons! We decided to come for lunch and this restaurant does not disappoint. We ordered: Fresh Shrimp Won Ton 鮮蝦雲呑 (8 pieces) without the noodles Beef brisket noodle And Fresh Blanched Veggies The wontons are huge, about the size of golf balls, the shrimp inside is more like a prawn, good bite and well seasoned. This was THE worst dining experience I've had. When asked for suggestions from the menu, the server gave clipped and annoyed responses as if we were intruding upon her. In an irritated tone, another server barked that if we used the discount card, we couldn't use a credit card. The food was nothing stellar as much of it came out either too salty or too oily. Excellent tasting lobster. Only thing I can think of is that the lobster should be cracked better in the kitchen since they do not give out self crackers. They just give out small forks that bend so easy. Also we ordered a veggie dish and this came out way late. Almost 3/4 of the way when we were through with our lobster. All in all the food quality of the lobster was excellent and this was the star of the dinner. To get five stars customer service should improve. read more

After trying the Lobster Sticky Rice at Flamingo House, we were interested to see how this dish fared at other restaurants. I've seen plenty of pictures of the Lobster Sticky Rice at Ho Yuen Kee on Fraser Street on social media so I figured this would be a good place to try out. Ho Yuen Kee is a smallish restaurant and, due to how busy it gets, the tight quarters is a bit annoying (although not unexpected at some Chinese restaurants). They really need more servers here because service was sloooooow! First off the bat was the Shredded Chicken with Jelly Fish ($16.50). I found that this dish was okay but not as good as Flamingo or Koon Bo. The Peking Duck ($45.80 for 2 dishes) came out and I was pleasantly surprised that they actually gave us enough wrappers for the Peking Duck (at some restaurants, they skimp out on the wrappers and make you pay for more). On the downside, all of the shrimp chips seemed to be broken The second dish of Peking Duck was the duck lettuce wrap. The filling was quite meaty and the duck was juicy and tender. Okay, this is the dish that we really came for (and almost every table in the restaurant ordered it)... Lobster Sticky Rice ($118 which included 2 orders of glutinous rice). I found the sticky rice (with corn niblets and tobiko) was moist and better than what we had at Golden Swan but it was definitely not as flavourful as what we had at Flamingo. In addition, they didn't do a very good job of cutting up the lobster since it was very difficult to get the meat out of the shell. I really liked the Braised Soft Tofu ($14.95) as the thick egg tofu was so tender to bite into. We needed some more veggies so we also ordered the some seafood with veggies ($20.95) which included sauteed squid, shrimp, celery, snow peas, and scallops. The Oyster and Green Onion Hot Pot ($18.80) arrived in a rather small pot with large oysters. I thought the oysters were a bit overcooked. The Beef with Gai Lan ($18.25) was pretty standard. Last up was the dessert soup made of green beans. It was pretty good and not overly sweet like some of the red bean soups we've had at other restaurants. Overall, the lobster sticky rice here was a bit overrated but they do have some other good dishes. read more

I've been wanting to check out Ho Yuen Kee for awhile now. My friend and I hadn't had dinner yet and it was past 9. We were both too lazy to cook at home. Lol. Anyway, I was craving some comfort food so I ordered the pork liver congee. My friend got congee as well except she had pork liver and kidney. Pork liver isn't for everyone but I grew up eating it and quite enjoy it. Plus, it's a great source of iron. Anyway, we also shared the garlic pea tips. All were tasty!!!! At first we thought we didn't order enough so we also ordered beef chowmein as well. Thank god the waiter didn't ring that in. The much hyped lobster sticky rice did not disappoint! We were a party of 4 and ordered a 2.5lb lobster and a single order of the sticky rice. The lobster was cooked well, nicely seasoned, and the rice was a great addition. The rice isn't as sticky as typical Chinese sticky rice, such that the kernels of rice are somewhat separated (i.e., not stuck together in a big clump) and the rice is super flavourful. Although the single order of rice was enough for the four of us given we had ordered other dishes, I'd likely get a double order next time because it's that good. At $28/lb for the lobster and $9 for a single order of sticky rice, it does get pricy. We also ordered soya duck and a beef & black fungus hot pot. Both of these dishes were average (nothing to rave about). The salt and pepper squid was a huge disappointment as it had far too much batter and wasn't crispy at all. One thing to keep in mind... When it came time to pay, we were informed that the restaurant only accepts Visa. There was a sign on the door indicating that credit cards are accepted for larger purchases, but no indication that only Visa is accepted. read more

I am glad I am hooked into the Chinese food scene in Vancouver. This is one of my favourite places to come. The service here is standard, order your food and get it soon! The food is outstanding. The cold shredded chicken and jellyfish always stand out with me. It is one of the top 5 dishes I love in life. I could eat it as part of a meal every day of the week. The sui gao is fantastic. There is nothing like it. I also really like the congee here. I have become quite a fan of congee over the last decade and this place is one of the places that top it off. I usually come here when I'm craving Chinese food late at night or when I'm in the area. Food: One of the better restaurants serving authentic Chinese food. I highly recommend Sweet and Sour Pork with Fruit (lightly breaded pork deep fried to perfection with a tangy red sweet and sour sauce with some fruits such as lychee and melon), congees (hot with fresh ingredients) and wonton noodle soup (wontons are generously sized with fresh shrimp). I also really like the tea they serve; I think it's some kind of lychee tea (a delicate and fragrant tea). After 9pm, they have late night specials where they serve smaller sized portions so you can try even more dishes! Ambiance: typical Asian restaurant...usually not too loud since it's not a very big restaurant. There are tables and booths. It's pretty comfortable. Price: Dishes (like Sweet and Sour Pork) are usually between $9-12. Congees and Noodle soups are usually $6-7. Late night specials are usually $4-6 and are usually half the size of regular dishes. Make reservations when you are thinking of going to the late night special on weekends; it is usually full! read more

Had the worst food at HYK today. Been here a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but today it was actually disgusting. Ordered like the white jew that I am; beef fried rice was made with undercooked rice, beef was pre-braised and like pale as me, just shockingly bad. Chicken chow mein was like a pile of shrivelled foreskins atop a burnt pile of noodles, no flavour whatsoever. Even the gai lan was bad - overcooked and burned. Day 4: Chinese Dinner...One Word Amazing So i'm from NYC - the cantonese food scene there has been lacking in the last few years - nothing new or creative has been out there in a long time - and the same restaurants sell the same things all over. Granted it's good! But according to my friends, i need to try the cantonese food in Vacouver, San Francisco and Hong Kong. With that said: The restaurant itself reminds me of most other chinese restaurants, so the ambiance and the feel was familiar, the chairs and tables were nice and large and decorated well. We grabbed a table and looked at the menu to order. Of course the first thing we wanted was the Lobster Sticky Rice! The rest of the food was ok, but the Lobster Sticky Rice was the one thing that made this place a 5 star restaurant for me! We ended up with a nearly 3 lb lobster on top of this bed of sticky rice that was savory and delicious. It had some corn mixed into it that gave it this...sweetness that was unexpected and the lobster was cooked perfectly! Even at almost 3 lbs the lobster was sweet and tasty.
