Sweet Home is a (relatively) new family run, Chinese restaurant that specializes in Nanjing food, but has a fairly expansive menu. All the customers were from the motherland, so definitely authentic! Went for dinner around 6PM on a Saturday and was seated immediately, but the restaurant is quite small, so plan ahead if you absolutely cannot wait. Nanjing Roast Duck (4.25/5): Definitely the best dish we tried! Duck is super fatty, savory, and slightly sweet on the skin. Note that the skin here isn't crispy Duck Blood Vermicelli Soup (4/5): Figured I'd try it after seeing so many other reviews with it and it was surprisingly delicious. The duck blood cubes aren't irony at all, just perfectly smooth, luxurious mouthfeel. The organs also weren't gamey, just very savory. A-choy with Garlic (3.75/5): Just a bit too greasy, but always good to get some greens on the table! Xian Sour Spicy Pork Noodle Soup (2/5): This one wasn't my favorite. Looking for some good Nanjing duck noodles soup, we find this place in San Jose. It's in a small plaza and there are roughly 10 tables inside. It's slightly understaffed that the owner has to handle ordering, bringing dishes and check out altogether. The dishes come with a good portion, nonetheless to say, it's slightly expensive too. We order a half of duck and two noodles, ending up to be $40-50 per person. The dishes are all too salty for us. It is an unassuming restaurant (more like a take out fast food place) couple doors down from Dan Izakaya. We went there for lunch and we were the only people eating in. They did have a lot togo order though. We ordered the Nanjang salt duck because of all the raved reviews on yelp and we were not disappointed. It did not taste fatty at all. Also ordered Pork Belly with tofu skin knots, eggplant with garlic sauce and the Shanghai rice cake with mustard green. All the food tasted good and the portion was decent. We've been buying the steamed buns since last year; our family members including kids like their 'baozi' which are made home style with slightly chewy dough filled generously with various meat and/or vegetarian fillings. Kids primarily like the pork and cabbage bao while all others are yummy too. Fresh made ones are $2 each/frozen from previous day are $1.5 each with limited choices. Recently we ventured into the family combo of three dishes chosen from a list for $45 cash (price raised from $40 since May 1st). We've tried three times so far and were mostly happy with the food. They are quite generous with the potions, not overly seasoned, nothing too fancy but decent home cooked style dishes. Certain dishes such as mushu pork can be greasy so we had to drain the extra oil before eating... Last night we ordered the soy braised pork leg as one of the three dishes and was very impressed with the quality and the huge quantity. Service is very friendly and efficient, this is a family owned business offering reasonably priced, good quality food. $40 for 3 dishes takeout and cash only. I was pleasantly surprised they included rice. This is a really good deal and I commend them for offering decent Chinese family meals. I got the salt and pepper fish, Shanghai pork ribs, and Mongolian beef. For food taste, it's about 3.5 stars. My wife didn't like the pork but I did. It was a little sweet and slightly tangy. There are lots of little rib bones so it's a bit messy to eat. The Mongolian beef lacked a little flavor and kick, but the fish was pretty good. We air fried it at home and glad we did because you can see there is a lot of oil in them. I love the no frills ordering (+0.5 star). The transaction was very quick. There's been a number of Chinese resturants that have popped up in the Bay that are chains and while they are highly reviewed on Yelp, imo they have a more generic, fast food chain vibe where everything tastes the same b/c the recipes and the spices used are all standardized If you want food that tastes home cooked and unique (southern Chinese but not Cantonese) I'd highly recommend Sweet Home Kitchen for their specialties. The duck was the meatiest I've had and their mushu pork is my favorite of any rendition I've ever had. This dish is eaten with rice and not wraps in this part of China so it doesn't come with wraps and imo its better with rice b/c it soaks up the fragrant and unami sauce. I've had dinner at SWK about 6-7 times and I have never been disappointed. Salted duck is perfectly prepared, juicy and the half duck will feed 3 easily. A hidden gem of a family shop, serving delicious Chinese food at pretty affordable prices. It's a fairly small spot, but it's homey with a hectic energy inside. Full menu spread is huge, but they hit up all the Nanjing notes pretty well (like duck blood and salted duck) and even get the spicy stuff from elsewhere pretty darn good too. Definitely a keeper; when I finished the meal I just wanted to try out other dishes of theirs! It's not a huge place, but service was curteous when speaking with staff, even if they'll possibly shout back to the kitchen ask if they still have certain dishes. I personally love that feel, but to each their own. Hot tea is complimentary, which I swear is getting to be more a rarity in California these days, lovely mellow with grassy notes. Flavors run strong on salt with a touch of sweet and generally well balanced throughout. =Salted Duck - 5/5 I was hoping to get roasted duck, but they ran out so we went with the Nanjing regional specialty of salt water duck. This boi is so plump and juicy it's pretty easy to get hooked if you're into game meats, though it's admittedly hard to eat too much due to the saltiness. I know not of legitimate flavor profiles beyond the basics, but it was darn good. FYI, whole duck also literally means whole duck, head and neck included. =XLB - 4/5 My only real critique is unfortunately their propensity to leak as the dough is a tad thin, as on the flavor front it's all full marks. It's not the greatest when you ~30% leaks but these were very much on point. At this price it's kind of bonkers that you're getting some pretty legit dumplings with one heck of a meaty bite and hearty soup to them. =Stir fried string beans (spicy) - 5/5 Surprisingly spicy! They had the full complement of dried peppers and sichuan peppercorn and the beans were seared well. Some of the pieces were dare I say too dry but the crunchy bits grew on me over the course of the meal. Could stand to be a bit less salty but still excellent dish. =Twice cooked pork loin - 5/5 Looks spicy but ends up having a moderate amount of heat. We came to the area wanting to try out Dan Izakaya, but there was a long wait. We walked by this hidden gem and saw the food pictures looked delicious, so we decided to dine-in. There was not a lot of people sitting inside, but there were a lot of people getting take out. We ordered pork soup dumplings, Nanjing salted chicken, mixed fried rice and green onion pancake. It was a lot of carbs and filled us up since we were starving. The nanjing salted chicken was the highlight. There's maybe not a lot of places that do it this well. It is a lukewarm style dish and the flavor of the salt on the tender duck was delicious. The dough from the green onion pancake and XLB had a nice chewy texture, very homestyle-like. I would pass on the fried rice next time. This is a family run restaurant and very cozy vibe. It was inexpensive for the Bay Area and we just spent around $50 for the meal. I really liked this place! Authentic Chinese food, which means it can get quite heavy and oily. We got the roast duck, corn and chicken dumplings, signature soup, and some edamame/mustard green dish. I'd skip the edamame dish next time since I found it kind of slimy, but I did need a vegetable. The duck was great. Oily and delicious and very well cooked. The soup was kind of odd and I wouldn't even really call it soup. The food here is so homey and I keep coming back to try new things - love the duck noodle soup (blood cubes so good - not so stanky), nanjing duck roasted also good - it is a bit sweeter than Peking and less fatty and the pickled mustard pork rice cakes or the soup version - all good. I've also had the salt pepper fish fillet takeout and it was good but prob better fresh! Their soup dumpling is ok but the most affordable I've seen. The "half roast duck" was not truly half, as the thigh slices were missing. Portions seem to be shrinking over time. It was the only dish that tasted close to the real thing but not quite there. The 鸭血粉丝汤 was greasy and bland, while the 大煮干丝 was dry and lacked flavor, even soaked in soup. The 小笼包 tasted no better than those from a low-end dim sum shop. 炒腰花 tasted rubbery. 皮肚面 bland. If you're from Nanjing, you'll likely be disappointed. Some dishes here capture the "look" but miss the "soul." The restaurant had an unsanitary feel overall. Our first visit wasn't bad, but this second experience left us unwilling to come back again. RUN DON'T WALK!! Can't believe my good luck for stumbling into SweetHome Kitchen today. This new Chinese establishment serves food you can find in your grandma's kitchen. The star of the show for me was their cabbage & pork bun. I kid you not, it's like biting into a flavor explosion. Juicy AF and so tasty! Probably one of the best buns I've had in quite awhile (and I eat them a lot). I also tried their Braised Pork Bun and MaganCai Pork Bun - equally juicy and delicious! I also tried their Stir-Fried Fish, which was tender and perfectly lightly seasoned. They've also got frozen dumplings in packs of 20 for sale that you can take home! New place. Give it a try. Surprised how good it is, in a home cooking kind of way. As a rare treat, they specialize in NanKing dishes. I think it is family operated. The matriarch was in charge of cooking, the dad serving, and daughter hosting. I can be wrong. The NanKing Salted Duck (鹽水鴨) would be a must-eat. In fact, I could come just for that. The noodles were done in a specific way. First cook the noodles, al dente, in a separate pot, when done, put them in a bowl with as little cooking water as possible. Then they add a generic soup-base, vegetarian. Last, they add the protein, if you so choose. The point is the noodles and the soup base must stand on their own, without the protein. And they did quite well. We order smoked fish as the protein and it was good. Next were their steamed buns. You can mix-and-match whatever. We tried three kinds. There's one called "3 chopped ingredients" (三丁包) and it was well done. The MeiGan Cai （梅乾菜) one was actually too smoky for me. Surprised, as I like them smoky. The veggie one was good. I was greeted by a lovely woman and handed a menu. I ordered my food and it is being prepared fresh right after I ordered it. The chef even came out while I placed my order. Originally we were going to Dan Izakaya but they didn't have any seating and the kitchen was going to close before any seating becomes available. We saw this restaurant next door, noticed it just opened, and decided to give it a try. Gotta support our local family owned establishments! The server was very welcoming and happily explained their menu options and current grand opening special. Presently it's 20% off for their steam buns and dumplings and their other menu items are 10% off. At initial glance you can see it's a Chinese restaurant but I wasn't sure what region's cuisine it served until I saw the menu, specifically the noodles section. This is a restaurant that offers Xian cuisine. I have not encounter many Xian restaurants so I was curious to try. We were not too hungry so we ordered 4 steam buns and a bowl of noodles. Since the pricing for the buns were the same for B1 to B7, the server said we can mix and match flavors. (also B7 was not available on that day) We ordered B3 pumpkin veggie, B4 cabbage pork, B5 braised pork, B6 Magan Cai (preserved veggie and pork) buns. For the noodles, we ordered N10, the Xian style hand pulled noodles. The server gave us an extra cabbage pork bun for free! It was because the bun's seams were starting to come apart so it was no longer aesthetically pleasing. For our party, we appreciated the extra bonus. Our favorite bun of the 4 flavors was the braised pork bun. It was the most flavorful and moist of the bunch. The buns arrived warm but not freshly steamed. When we asked for a knife to cut the buns (for sharing) the server went into the kitchen and came back with a chef's knife and offered to cut it for us. Perhaps they do not have table knives yet? We appreciated her enthusiasm and gesture. The xian noodles arrived warm with veggies and the dish was dressed in a slightly nutty roasted chili oil and a vinegary sauce. The noodles were wide, thick and bouncy. I felt the noodles needed more spice and flavor. Also, it turns out they make their chili oil in house too! Out of curiosity we asked how the soup of N6 tasted like (spicy sour soup). The server got us a bowl to try and it was really good. The slight heat and gentle puckering tartness from the vinegar is really pleasing to the palete. After eating, the server checked in on us and asked about our thoughts and feedback on the food. While prefacing that is just our opinions, we shared our thoughts and suggestions with her and she thankfully she seemed open about it. Granted, this restaurant just opened recently, I'm sure they are still working out the kinks and logistics. I will give it some time before trying this place again in the future. I stopped by here to take a look at the menu on my way to get food at Dan Izakaya. As I was looking at the menu and photos of food along the outside, someone greeted me and answered my question of which items were more popular and delicious. I decided to try their special deal for 3 dishes for 40 which was honestly quite a steal for the amount of food and quality. They also have fresh homemade buns in various flavors and allow you to mix flavors if requested. The staff was super kind and let me sit in their shop as I was waiting for my ride and food to go and even gave me lemon water as it was quite hot outside. I was blown away by their hospitality as the kind waitress helped me bring in my bags of take out to the car because I had helped my friends order more food to go. I visited this place a few times when it initially opened. I had always ordered to go for their family meal and the last time I visited I decided to eat in for once. I got the duck blood vermicelli I had seen mentioned and the owner who took my order asked if I would like this "special" that's not on the Chinese "special" menu nor the regular menu. He said it was a cold appetizer of a bunch of veggies. I like veggies and said sure, thinking it can't be more than $10. The dish came and was a regular sized cold appetizer. I was wrong because when I got the bill, the "special" dish was $20. The duck blood vermicelli was also $20. We had ordered another dish that was $10, so after tax and tip we paid $70 for two ppl over three dishes, one of which was a cold appetizer! It was my fault to assume the dish can't be more than $10, but it's also ridiculous to charge $20. I paid and never went back. read more

Fabulous new addition to the South Bay food scene. My wife and I are VERY picky when it comes to Chinese food and this place is a home run. Great dumplings (that you can buy frozen) - check. Scallion pancakes with a crispy outside and just enough chew in between - check. Super thick hand pulled noodles with their own chili oil - check.
