Food was amazing I loved the coconut shrimp, and orange chicken. Caution !!!!! They charge a 20% waste fee!!!!! I wish they would have told us before sitting us down they do have a sign posted on the way out and you would only see it if you knew to look for it. However staff was nice and it is a great place to fill up with good food just don't waste any cause that bill will shoot up. We did have a party of 12 and definitely left with a frown on how overcharged we were but again food wasn't bad and staff were nice! Yeah unfortunately these type of buffets are gonna have a low rating on Yelp because of the judgmental masses dropping bad reviews because of the bad service or what have you. I'm going to give a higher score to boost the rating and also rate it for what it really is: an inexpensive spot to stuff your face with Asian food. Growing up going to these cheap Asian buffets, it's still something I crave on occasion, and I'm glad that Hokkaido Buffet is holding down the fort. Hokkaido Buffet is probably the cheapest buffet around now, with previous competitors Sweet Tomatoes and Hometown Buffet being out of the picture. It's significantly cheaper than the close-by Milpitas Buffet and Tomi Buffet. If you're looking for the cheapest spot to get your Asian Buffet fix, Hokkaido Buffet has your back. The food here is hit or miss, but that's what you're signed up for. Some of the dishes are actually pretty good: the BBQ ribs, pork soup, Cajun fries, honey walnut shrimp, and crab rangoon are all quite solid. The sashimi is not the freshest (clearly frozen), but they give you such thick chunks that it's hard to deny it's value. Food to avoid: the shumai is actually kinda gross lol. Don't be fool by the name "Hokkaido." They are actually CHINESE. Typical Chinese buffet quality food, which is to say not the best. My buddy and I came here for dinner on a weekday night. It's $25 per person, with drinks and tip comes out to $35 per person total. Some of their highlights include: Oysters with sauce, Tuna and Salmon sashimi, Snow crab legs, clams. The good: the pork rib soup was nice, felt like homemade. I enjoyed the fried wontons. Sushi rolls were nice, with unagi on top. The coconut shrimp was very saucy but paired well with the leftover sushi rice from the rolls. The bad: the crab was terrible, the meat was dry and stringy and flavorless. The dessert options were all pretty bad - I usually don't spit out food or waste it but sometimes it's just not worth eating empty calories if it is neither nutritious nor delicious. Food was pretty oily. I usually judge places by the value for their price, and overall I'd say the food is reasonably tasty for a very competitive price. If this were a college AYCE dining hall, this would forsure be incredibly popular. Overall, I'd come here again if it were by myself and I was extremely hungry. We went here New Year's Day for lunch and it was somewhat busy, probably 70% of the tables filled? When we got in I saw they had a sign showing they would charge the holiday/weekend price which ended up being $100+ after tax for 4. We probably should have called before showing up as I thought that price was outrageous for the quality of food we got. At the regular weekday pricing it was already a hard decision for us. The sushi was meh. They offered some sashimi and 5-ish styles of California rolls which were all the same other than a change of sauce and toppings. The sushi was cold, as if they had recently taken it out of the freezer. There wasn't ice or anything on the sushi, it was just really cold. Aside from that they mostly had Chinese food and it was barely edible. I didn't fill myself up because I was afraid of getting sick and they had tons of oil on everything. In 2024, it may be reasonable to some to spend $89 for four people to eat. It is a buffet, and one of us had soda (the other three drank water), but it seemed very high for us. The food choices were not as plentiful as other Chinese buffets that we've been to, but what we ate was good- not great- but pretty good. I remember the last time I was there was probably last year and I have to be honest food was freshly cooked, the taste was good though packed but it was tolerable for me. This is my first ever review. I have worked in the restaurant industry for a long time. I know how hard it is to run a restaurant. Further I know how damaging a bad review can be. This buffet is one of my guilty pleasures, I have gone more times than care to admit, but they have mostly the same menu and I have learned what is tasty, most of it is well seasoned, fresh and it's quick to get your fill up. Tonight though I had a problem with one of the dishes (fake crab salad on the cold side). It was literally spoiled, and I had to spit it into a napkin. I brought it to the servers attention, no action, no one checked on the dish, It just sat on the buffet where anyone could take some. I got my bill and took it to the cashier, after paying I turned to the manager, who was just hanging out messing with his phone and reiterated the problem. He said yeah I know, we'll look at it. And goes back to his phone. So much for customer service, so much for concern for the health of his guests. Ok. Its an all you can eat buffet place with excellent seafood choices. The decor of the restaurant is outdated. The choices were not much. However consider how much you are paying in Bayarea, I will definitely recommend to people. Be prepare, it's not a fancy place, but if you like seafood and willing to use your hand to crack your own shrimp, crab , then it's for you! They were good at making sure the food kept coming out when an item was low so that was good. If I did come back it would be for lunch and the lunch time pricing. Let me start out by saying: actions speak louder than words. And my partner and I have eaten at this buffet 3 times in the last 7 days. If you've eaten at an asian-owned buffet before, you sort of already know what to expect in terms of what dishes are offered. Hokkaido has most of what you'd expect. What gives it the edge is that their service is excellent. Like, really excellent. I see the waitress standing by surveying what people need and scooping up the finished plates really promptly. The front desk are really nice people when it comes time to pay. And they were very diligent about keeping the dishes refilled and fresh. This last part is especially important because buffets like to run texture/temperature sensitive foods that get gross when outside of their ideal parameters (like french fries, wontons, or friend chicken that aren't crispy anymore). So you can usually count on those being pretty crispy (and if not, fill a plate with other items and come back after when they're restocked. #BuffetStrats) I also need to give special shoutouts to their sashimi which is pretty fresh and their bao. Which is like biting into a cloud. They've got a sweet one that I think is mango custard filled or something? Not sure. But it's amazing. They've got fried crab. TONS of fish items. Like, really a lot of seafood options. It's not a huge buffet spot. Only a couple of rows of trays. It's not fancy or trying to be flashy and as far as options, they have fewer than most. But I found almost every tray they had out to be something I actually wanted to eat. As opposed to the larger places that have tons of filler dishes and only a few things I want. So now that I'm done opining, here's the summary of why this place is 5 stars. 1) I can walk here 2) $14 lunch buffet? Yes plz. 3) Service is excellent across all 3 visits. 4) Food trays cycles regularly 5) I literally watch them diligently clean. Update 9/6/2021 I love this buffet because the food is delicious, consistent, and they have great service. My go to items are the spider rolls, sashimi, broccoli beef, sauteed pork, and walnut shrimp. The sushi is made with skill. Legit sushi rice has rice vinegar, some sugar, some salt, and Hokkaido makes their sushi rice the legit way. The rice is excellent every time. Would recommend going during busy times like lunch or dinner service. This way, you'll get new and fresh batches of food. Enjoy! read more
