Came to Hokkaido during mother's day. I am no stranger to this buffet since me and my family visit here any time during special events. I noticed that the food has changed since the last time I visited. I used to like the kimchi because it would be a nice side dish to cool down. Now I am not a professional when it comes to kimchi, but the ones they make now just taste bitter. Also, the coconut shrimp used to be crispy before, but now it tastes so soft. The ambiance is pleasant when not crowded, sometimes it would be filled with people from line to line because of special days. But overall, you get a good seating place to make up for the food. I don't know what happened to it, but the buffet used to have a fried ball with crab meat and teriyaki sauce. I wonder if they still have that item or if I just came at the wrong time. Second time I've been here and I felt the food didn't improve. You must pay first before you are seated and that includes ordering your drink. Food options were plentiful but found it salty, oily and stale. There's a section where you select your protein, noodles and veggies for Mongolian style. Meat was very tough and hard to chew. It was the same for the section where they slice your meat. They offer crab legs but they were salty. And oysters has drenched in cocktail sauce. Lack of fresh veggies to make a salad. Today I went to the lunch in this restaurant was the only thing I had eaten all day, I grabbed a piece of meat of those that they have already prepared and I put one of their sauces that they have on the counter, I grabbed fresh meat, shrimp and chicken to prepare them for me, all very well so far, I ate a little of the meat with the sauce that I grabbed I went for my plate that they were preparing and I sat down to eat when from one moment to the next I get a stomach ache that caused me diarrhea. All the rest of the day, we came from the island of Santa Catalina, we have come several times I always grab the same and today I gave myself to try the other meat that they already have prepared and that sauce on the counter and it went very badly. I've been wanting to check this place out and finally did. To me, the food is okay. There is a decent selection but there's not much dishes that I actually eat. Nothing really stood out for me. I did like the teppanyaki grill and think the chef did a really good job with the flavor. They do have a great selection of desserts including a chocolate fondue. Hokkaido Seafood Buffet was one of those places that looked promising from the outside but didn't quite live up to expectations once I stepped in. It's easy enough to find, and at first glance, the restaurant appears clean and organized. But sadly, the experience didn't go much further than that. First, they automatically added a 10% service charge even though there were only two people in our party. This is a self-serve buffet; they did not provide a receipt until I asked for one, and the service charge was not clearly disclosed or explained. Customers are required to pay before entering. We arrived around 7:00PM, and the food quality was extremely poor. Many items were either empty, cold, or did not look fresh. The sushi looked old, and the raw fish did not appear appetizing at all. There wasn't even a proper salad bar or fresh vegetable selection. The wontons tasted sour, which was very concerning. As for the service, the staff spent most of their time standing around and talking to each other. They rarely checked on customers or did anything helpful during the meal even though they charge a SERVICE CHARGE. Ironically, when we were almost finished and ready to leave, they suddenly became attentive, asking if we need anything and clearing plates, seemingly expecting additional tips. My husband and I were feeling hungry but didn't want to drive too far nor did we want to wait too long for our food so we decided to try out this buffet. We had a mixed experience at this buffet. Some of the dishes were genuinely enjoyable, the bbq pork ribs were flavorful, the fried plantains were nicely done, and the fried rice hit the spot! I also really liked the clam chowder, it was creamy and delicious. The cheesecake was delicious too! However not everything lived up to expectations. Just to name a few of the items like the mashed potatoes, lo mein, sesame balls, shumai, some of the pastries and the chocolate fondue didn't taste very fresh, it was more like on the stale side, which was disappointing. The coconut shrimp was aaight, I guess. On a positive note, the staff were very attentive and friendly, which we really appreciated. Visited this AYCE about ten years ago for a birthday celebration and I did not expect the quality of the food and service to change so drastically since then. Celebrated a family member's birthday there today with a party of 20. The staff had sectioned off an area for the guests. Once seated, it took 15-20 minutes for initial drink orders. Stayed for over two hours and only received one refill. Had to stack our plates to make space for new ones. Our stack wasn't cleared until we left. At other buffets, staff usually come around to check and see if plates need to be cleared or drinks refilled. Hardly saw any servers. As for the food, many of the dishes were either mislabeled or not labeled at all. The food itself was bland; it didn't taste bad, but it wasn't anything amazing either. The desserts were good. Only not so good thing was there was one serving utensil for a section of treats. In other words, if there were 4 different mini cakes, there was on utensil. Same with the sliced fruits. TLDR - $29.99 for a Monday dinner is industry standard. I'm disappointed to say that I've been to more established locations not too far away that are better. Thoughts: I think the standards should generally be low when going to buffet restaurants like this. Based on what I've experienced, it's normal to expect the flattop where they make Mongolian BBQ, 12-20 options, some rolls, and a dessert area. Hokkaido has all that. The problem is, I feel that their options are a bit repetitive. It's almost like their food is a derivative of each other, where some of the viands look too similar to each other. What makes it harder is the incorrect/lack of labels, which really ramps up the guesswork. The Mongolian BBQ area is rarely manned, so it takes them a long time to complete orders as the cook needs to do a lot of orders when he does have time to be outside of the kitchen. I will say that the Mongolian area has more options than what I'm used to seeing. They have an unmanned carving station that has a small block of beef that's been sitting there for quite some time, and a sausage. Both taste fine but are forgettable. I'd say the best bite is the clam with glass noodles, and the egg tart is pretty good too. I just feel that things could have been better overall. Service: You pay when you go in, and they sit you down. I was told the drinks will be served regardless if it's a soda or water. I've already said my piece regarding their Mongolian BBQ station, which is the most service you'll technically get after you're seated. Ambiance: I went on a Monday night, so the place was operating at 30-40% capacity. The L shaped nature of the buffet spread put the dessert and salad station on the empty end of the restaurant, so getting yourself a watermelon slice may become an eerie experience if you hit that point where there's enough light for them to keep the lights in that area off, but not enough to feel like you're in an open establishment. If you're over 50 then you can related to this - typical 80s buffet style that has everything (or majority) dishes from America, Chinese, and Sushi. Walked in, I felt I'm going back to the past for sure. The place has been here for decades and I remembered drove by for countless time to get into the freeway (right next to the freeway). The place has it own parking lot (it big), and also big high ceiling inside...but the decor is so dated that you just "wow". Don't get me wrong here, it's clean but it old and feels the air of cheap cooking aromas. There are 4 section from the sides of surrounding walls & window overlong the freeway & side street. There is stirred fried noodle with American foods section, next to it is Chinese section, Crab & crawfish plus seafoods as highlights, next is sushi section...over dozen plus different types of sushi. Then the dessert section - ice cream and fruits. Foods wise: greasy, seasoning is off or tasteless, doesn't look appealing and dried. Don't get me wrong but some dishes are ok, and some are just questionable. I tasted most of them and all I can say is a bite or a piece is good enough (some just 1/2 of a bite) for me. Service is nice and fast plus the prices are reasonable around $33/person w/ tax & tip. Drinks are separately (soda is around $3 and beer is $6). Most of the food was cold youd be lucky if it was warm unless it just came straight out but then its still somehow just warm most times, even a chinese food spot knows to keep the burners on 24/7 to keep the slop hot. Dessert is pretty much nonexistent or some mid basic cookies. Im sure the workers are trying their best but if i could ask for a refund i would ive payed less and got more else were. Took my parents here one weekend as it's been a while since I've had any buffet style dinner. Service was fair, came in and was immediately greeted and paid upfront first. I like this method better as it streamlines the process and makes the experience more efficient. Food is decent for what it is, do not have high expectations if you come here thinking it's Michelin quality. This place has a decent amount of variety for what it is. I don't have high expectations from Asian buffets because I don't like the quality of the food, but this place went straight to the bottom of my list of Asian buffets. I didn't appreciate the demeanor of the waitress. When I asked for a straw, it seemed like she just threw it on our table- I'm not completely sure if she's in a hurry or if that's her way of giving out straws, but she just threw it on the table and just left without saying a word. It would've been more polite if she said, "here you go" or just simply hand me a straw in a more gentle way. She also did that when she gave napkins to us. I'm going to safely assume that is her way of giving items to customers. Last but not least. The bathrooms. More specifically the women's bathroom. I was so utterly disgusted at how dirty it was. 1 bathroom was clogged and the another bathroom had toilet paper all over the seat. The trash cans were overfilled and bathroom counter was so dirty. I'm kind of appalled that this place is a buffet and seeing the bathroom that dirty was so gross. This is our second time at Hokkaido Buffet in Long Beach and the two times we've been here we noticed they actually changed the menu but kept the traditional buffet food items like orange chicken, teriyaki chicken, black pepper beef, coconut shrimp, salmon, prime rib, ham and sushi. Customer service here is excellent. The waiters kept coming around to replenish our drinks and pick up plates that are done. They would ask first if you're done with your plate before picking it up. They also have fresh sushi and a good variety of sushi. They offer 10 kinds of sushi. There's also a section for fruits and vegetables. They have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. The section for dessert is bountiful. Majority of their desserts are on a closed section with clear covers. There are different kinds of pastries, cakes and cookies. They also offer soft serve and ice cream. The food replenishment takes a little bit of time though so you would have to check a couple of times when the newly cooked shrimp or newly grilled salmon is out. read more

Although the city is Long Beach, this place is very close to Signal Hills. It has a very large parking lot. This is for a Sunday late afternoon review. As you enter the restaurant, you have to pay for your buffet first... kinda like the buffets in Las Vegas. After we sat down, we told our waitress what we wanted to drink. We were charge a service fee upfront. Minus 1 star. In the buffet area, there are lots of food. I had grilled corn, steamed red bean sticky rice, sumai (soso), half of a crab, steamed sword fish (a bit dried), California roll with eel/Avocado on top, Chinese fried pork ribs, shrimp with onion and sprouts made to order, jello, pineapple, small scallop, etc. Oh, there was this flowing chocolate fondue fountain. Ugh! I should have come hungry. I was so full. I could eat any more shrimp or crabs. Next time I will go to the grill area where I can request cook to order food. I wasn't able to eat all of the desserts. Just too much food. We will definitely come back in the future. We had very good customer service. "But, no problem. You have one now." My reservations were at noon. They opened at 1130a. We got there around 1100am. They seated us anyway. Once they got all drink orders down, we were left to our own devices, so we all went our own ways to explore what to grub. And what a spread they had! Like an endless line of different kinds of sushi and sashimi, fried and sautéed foods, baked seafood, salads, plenty of kinds of soup, they even had a prime rib and Hanachi grilling station as well as items for kids' palates. Dessert options were also really good. I enjoyed it, but what I enjoyed more is overhearing my party liking/loving what they had. FOOD: 5. Other than the crawfish being too spicy for my taste (that's a personal issue though) everything was great. SERVICE: 4. Very little interaction, but above par. VALUE: 5. You get more for your money. And I love that they have senior citizen discounts and the implemented service charge applied to the bill. PARKING: Private lot. Not an issue if you get here early enough. OVERALL: 4.75. They have a sign that says to pay first. They didn't do this because they have a $9.99/lb snow crab legs promo. (I was surprised no one availed of this in my party!) Service was great. they also did an amazing job refilling dishes as they were getting low. But the quality of the food has declined drastically. I went with my son on a Tuesday at about 1:30pm. the restaurant was fairly busy. There were around 20 tables filled I'd say 30-40 people present. The sushi quality was poor. the rice was old and hard. The sushi filling to rice ratio was way off. there was little filling and way too much rice. The fried rice looked good visually but the taste was off, bland. The carbonara pasta was also off. it didnt taste good, but it looked pretty good visually. The cream cheese rangoons and the egg rolls were great. The hot oil fish filets tasted really good but that was it honestly. The black pepper steak flavors were weird and really salty. the steak was good quality and the veggies were nice and fresh but the dish was not prepared well. The chicken pot stickers looked good too but i think their filling has too much ginger and so the filling didnt taste very good. the fried sushi was also really salty and tasted weird. the egg tart was prepared weird. they used muffin wrappers to prepare them. the flavor was nice but i basically got no tart. it was just a little bit of egg filling. the chocolate cake dessert was dry but the strawberry cake and the mango cake were moist and delicious. the ice cream was probably to best thing in the place. we used to go to Hokkaido all the time. it was a weekly thing. but in more recent years i feel like this is a place to avoid. If youre looking for the exact opposite and a much greater experience take the drive and head over to Four Seasons buffet in Cerritos. That's the go to spot for my family nowadays. At Hokkaido We paid $17.99 for me and 8.99 for my son plus 2.45 per soda refillable, and they charge and additional 10% service fee automatically so you dont have to tip. total came out to just under $40 for the two of us. read more

Regular Chinese food fare, they have someone that can do Mongolian BBQ type stuff there i think? I was only really craving sushi, but I grabbed some Lo Mein, a fried fish of sort, a roll and a corn. She was dismissive and didn't seem to care. She kept saying "I'm not arguing with you", which I thought meant that she was going to honor the lunch price since she was obviously in the wrong. Then I realized that meant that she didn't care if they were in the wrong. She also didn't care about customer service, representing the business well, or if I ever ate there again. Not a bad Asian buffet! Also my second time here, we went to San Pedro beach and got really famished and thought about this buffet on our way home. It was 22$ per adult until we saw a sign that as of June 10, it will be 24$. How inflation is going, I'm not surprised. I've been to a lot of buffets and they seem to all be the same, but I really enjoyed this one just the way they set food up and the selection seem really good. I really enjoyed the BBQ RIBS, fried chicken wings, and coconut shrimp (avoiding the actual coconut flakes). The sushi is ok, like any other buffet sushi, but they seem to be much fresher than the other places! They had a chocolate fountain which is nice and tasted pretty good. Unfortunately, their ice cream machine wasn't working well. The only options were chocolate and it was runny.... We visited this location for dinner, on a holiday, and the food was just okay. Due to it being busy (very busy) it was great to see the choices. There was so much food that was available to all patrons: A teppanyaki station which had a variety of vegetables and protein, a prepared meal station that included all of the favorite Chinese dishes, I.e. beef broccoli , orange chicken, noodles, fried rice, etc. traditional Chinese soups, a Sushi station, oysters on the half shell were provided in the seafood station and last but not least a desert station. It was all great however some items were not as fresh as expected. If you did not get your food cooked Teppanyaki then you selected items that may have been under a heat lamp or chafing, and had been sitting out. I nor any of my 16 guests got ill from any of the food so I must give them their props. Thank you for a real buffet, fit for all. But next time I will try going at the lunch hour (when they open). read more

Can't go wrong with $24 seafood buffet. We try to stop by here whenever we're in the area. This place has been here forever. Huge parking lot. Love that they have a Mongolian station, they cook everything fresh for you. The variety here is great. Sushi options are good. The hot food section is decent - from Chinese to American BBQ. Salad station. Desserts - the typical sliced cakes & almond cookies, they have candy, soft serve, & a chocolate fountain. The few times we've been here our servers have been great. We hosted a 70th birthday here and they blocked off a section for us. Nothing great or nothing horrible about this place. You do get a pretty good bang for your buck for what they have to offer here. $18 for weekdays & $24 for dinner & weekends is a great deal. It's just a pretty run down interior, some of the booths have ripped seats. Restrooms need some major fixing - the locks don't work. Lol. read more

This is a very hit and miss place. The food is the usual asian buffet. With sushi, tepanyaki, and your normal American/ Chinese bites. The servers are fast and nice. The price is not too bad. But the food alright. read more

Typical buffet food never disappoint & budget friendly. They have a lot of options I think they need to get rid of that artificial soft serve ice cream machine it's disgusting and come on it's time for an upgrade. Food is always hot I like that.
