The spam musubi is always super fresh and hot. I always put the perfect amount of spam to Rice ratio. The grilled salmon bowl is always my go to. However this time the beef is sour and the chicken has a terrible smell and is slimy and gooey. There is some thick dairy coating on the macaroni that is also off. There was just no flavor what so ever. The macaroni salad and meats had very little flavor than what I'm used to. For my veggies, I only received cabbage and literally one piece of broccoli. Our bill came out to $43 for a one item and two item with fried rice substituted. It's not like the food was horrible but it just had no flavor and I had to drench everything with the sauces it comes with in order to eat it. There are a few options for Hawaiian bbq around the area and we wanted to try Hoku. Disclaimer: we didn't go there to dine or pick up. We doordashed (is that even a word?) Anyhow, new spot, let's try. I really wanted to love this place. I ordered the mini bbq chicken meal. Trust when it says MINI. The meat portion seemed generous but I also asked for no veggies. But the Mac and Rice portion is truly made for kid size. The taste is very ok, not horrible, the mac tasted very watered down- lacking in flavor, the chicken was cooked well- I like the bite size pieces. The bbq sauce on the side was decent, nothing to rave about. (At the time) Doordash charged $5.99 for delivery and service fee was $4.20. Our food arrived 20 min after estimated time because the dasher made a stop on the way. This is no way Hoku's fault. I live borderline vacaville (still Fairfield) and due to the distance, this can happen. We probably won't try this place again unless we are in their area. Doordash pricing is not worth the fees. To be honest, it was a bit of a mixed bag. It was super-hot outside, little over 100 degrees, and sadly, there was no AC inside. It wasn't hot inside the building, but it wasn't cool either. It could really do with getting AC for those hot summer days. As for the staff, they weren't downright rude or anything, but they didn't exactly go out of their way to be helpful either. My main issue was the restroom cleanliness, so I opted not to use them. The food portions were pretty generous as others have said, so you definitely won't leave hungry. The problem was, none of it had much flavor, even the sauces. The meat was nicely cooked, but it just didn't have that tasty Hawaiian BBQ kick you'd expect. And the prices were a tad higher than what I thought they'd be considering the food. So it didn't feel like great value for money. In a nutshell, this place could be better. If they could spice up their food a bit, make the place more welcoming, work on their service, and clean up the restrooms, it'd be a much better experience. Food was meh, I wanted to get the Chicken Katsu Curry on the two item plate but it was only available in the bowl. The piece of chicken was probably pounded out so that it appeared to be a generous serving but the result was very thin Chicken Katsu, the curry was not spicy and it was very thin, like water thin, no body to the sauce at all. Our other order was the teriyaki chicken breast, all this it was a piece of grilled chicken and a teriyaki sauce to dip it in, we also found a hair in the Mac salad. So I say I was there to pick up my order and my name. The person still doesnt speak, hands me my order in a flinging motion. I say thank you and they just give a uh huh and that was all. We came in a few days ago after trying to get in line for In-N-Out. The line was forever long, so we drove around the corner and saw Hoku. It was 7:44pm when we walked in and I felt bad because the sign said no orders after 7:45pm. I had a hangry 2 year old and a hangry hubby, so I was relieved when they let us order. We got a chicken katsu and BBQ chicken combo, and a chicken BBQ, beef BBQ and fried shrimp combo. We liked that the servings we're enormous. More meat than rice - usually it's the other way around. Flavor was good, not too slaty and they gave sauce on the side so it wouldn't get all soggy. We loved the to-go containers, haha. We are grateful they let us order so close to their cut-off time and our food was ready before they closed at 8pm. We'll be coming back again. Second red flag, the patties they serve are not homemade. They were literally a burger patty like the one you can order from a burger joint. The service is what was so opposite of Aloha. The kid at the cash register looked like he didn't want to be there. He had a hat on and his hair was down hanging in his face. At a restaurant you should at least put it back. I ended order the laulau plate because I was craving laulau and wanted to give them a try. He was rude pointing at the card reader when I tried to hand him me card then gave me a receipt and said "can you sign this" I was in mid conversation with my co-worker but heard him and as I was turning to sign the receipt he repeated "can you sign this" not even 10 seconds after he asked the first time as though he had something better to do with no other customers waiting. Although the laulau was decent and I'd say better than L&L, I won't return because customer service is more important to me. read more

I stopped in tonight after seeing a sign in the plaza. My husband, daughter and I ordered the Curry chicken Katsu, BBQ chicken fried rice, Kalbi short ribs, fries and Malasadas. My husband devoured the Kalbi short ribs, and said they were really good. I enjoyed the chicken curry Katsu, and so did he. Daughter liked the BBQ fried rice, and of course everyone liked the Malasadas. I was so stoked to find a place that had Malasadas, as I haven't seen any since I left my last vacation in HI. Fries were good, but tasted unsalted, which I think is intentional. No big deal, because they came with salt packets. All in all glad we stumbled across this place, and we'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. This really shows you how bad of a situation we are in with this admin. We have supply chain and gas shortages driving up the cost of raw goods, plus a decline in the shear volume of daily sales due to the pandemic and people being unemployed. The effect is that the added expense of running a business gets passed onto the consumer. Sorry for the rant. Anyhow, food was good. This is the best Hawaiian food in Fairfield, with generous portions and reasonable prices. The restaurant is clean inside, with a courteous and professional staff, and food that's made to order. However... The restaurant itself doesn't have much of an atmosphere, and some of their practices seem wasteful. I've been going to Hoku Hawaiian BBQ for a little over a year, and it doesn't seem that any of these practices have changed over this time. Although the restaurant (including the bathroom) appears quite clean, there's not much of an atmosphere, other than a few posters of the wall, and some ceramic sea turtles, which are quite nice. When I visited, Hawaiian music was playing softly over the speakers, which at first seemed like a plus. However, this turned into the biggest minus of eating there, as I noticed after about 15 minutes that the "music" was actually a tape loop of a single song, that nearly drove me mad after spending about 45 minutes there waiting for and eating my meal. After a while, I felt like I was waiting in line for a ride at Disneyland, rather than being in a restaurant. I can only imagine how annoying this must be for the staff to have to listen to the same song, hour after hour, on a shift. I've been to Hawaii many times, and there's a great diversity of Traditional and Contemporary Hawaiian music, so it makes no sense the restaurant would choose a Traditional Hawaiian song and loop it endlessly. If you're expecting "fast" food, this is NOT the place. Every order is made to order, and takes about 15 minutes, on average. The upside of that is the food is always fresh and hot, and very tasty. I recommend pairing your plate with a can of Hawaiian Sun fruit drinks, they are delicious. When ordering, you are never asked if the order is "for here," or "to go," every order is prepared to go by default, maybe they don't want you to eat in? If you choose to eat there, you walk your neatly packaged food to a table, throw away the extra plastic bags for napkins and sauces, take the lids off the plastic containers, and dig in. This doesn't add to the in-house dining experience at all. Additionally, you are never asked if you want any sauces, you automatically receive multiple packets of soy sauce, sriracha sauce, and numerous plastic cups filled with sauces that go along with your order. This may seem fine, but I'm a light sauce guy, and end up throwing away most of the sauces. For my most recent order, I had a spicy pineapple chicken plate, which was quite good. It came with an enormous sauce container, and most of it went in the trash. I'd much rather be asked what sauces I want, if any, when ordering. The plastic containers they use are heavy duty, and are so large they don't fit in the slot of the only garbage container at the restaurant (you are expected to bus your own table). So, you have to open the bottom door of the garbage container to dispose of them, another issue that doesn't add to the in-house dining experience. Would it be so difficult to ask if the order was "for here," or "to go," and to ask what sauces I'd like? It seems like Hoku Hawaiian BBQ could cut down on their waste and expenses quite a bit by asking a few questions when I order. The best way to experience Hoku Hawaiian BBQ is to phone in your order and take it to go. That way, your wait time will be at a minimum, your food will be fresh, and you can enjoy it in your own home. read more

We would also remark, this is a slightly better Hawaiian style shop than the competition. Easy and convenient via yelp per GH to order online, and good bang for your buck in regards to generous portion, having nicely packed togo reusable containers. Quality and taste has room for improvement though... The garlic shrimp had charred garlic which was a bit bitter and I wouldn't reorder the kimchi spicy soup ever. ugh ‍All the other items like katsu and bbq hit the mark, as did the garlic eggplant and fried fish/shrimp. Not a fan of their mac salad, but it's not awful. You can sub for different starches or side options which is always nice. Also you need to order their smoothies, it's bomb! Stopped into Hoku this evening on a whim to pick up some dinner. I've heard pretty good things about this place and always love me some Hawaiian BBQ, so thought I would give Hoku a try. Came nicely packaged with a neat baggie of utensils, napkins, and yummy sauces- soy, SIRACHAAA, katsu sauce, and some type of creamy sauce for the shrimp. Katsu was pretty good and I really liked the sauce. Fried shrimp was not too shabby and the sauce was good- I think a housemade sauce? Steamed rice was cooked perfectly and the Mac salad is smackin'. Some steamed veggies- cabbage and carrots- under the meats and those were good, too! I really enjoy Hawaiian BBQ and it's hard to find a good spot here on the mainland. This place is pretty good to fix a Hawaiian BBQ hankerin'. I saw they had a lot of other good-looking stuff on their menu I'd like to go back to try- fried rice, gyoza, lumpia, musubi, rice bowls, and ramen! I really appreciated them packing all sauces and condiments in a zip lock bag. I rarely see other places do that. It's the small details that matters! The food was good. I ordered the Hoku combo plate and the mini chicken katsu. Food tasted fresh. I really like the take out container that separates all of the components of the plate, so when we got home, the meat and rice was still hot and the macaroni was still cold. Usually, I find chicken katsu way too battery and oily at Hawaiian bbq places, but the one here was lightly battered and crispy - it was not overwhelming. The plate was also nicely balanced with steamed veggies on the side. The restaurant was clean, staff was nice, and food was good.
