I've seen Holdaak on instagram and have passed by countless times and was excited to try it. Sad to say it was way below my expectations. I ordered a #2 combo (spicy) that comes with a sandwich and a chicken strip, and my order was incorrect. They gave me just strips instead and they weren't even spicy. Not too big of a deal though, if the food is good. But the chicken wasn't anything special and 2 of the tenders kind of tasted undercooked. The side sauce they give you is what saved the meal. And it's still just mid. Honestly, I would just stick to Dave's Hot Chicken. The customer service is also poor and the guy that took my order just seemed overall uninterested. Buyer beware. 2 weeks ago I went in for a 3 piece original combo, and was surprised that my order was done in about 3 minutes, instead of the normal 8-10 minutes. I really didn't give much further thought to it except noticing that the chicken was not as hot as usual, and just "moist" instead of "juicy". Two days ago, I went in and ordered the same thing. When I got home, the chicken batter was overdone, and the chicken itself was barely lukewarm. I have to guess that during the rush hours, they pre-cook some tenders and fries. When they don't sell, they sit until some sap like me walks in at 8 PM and orders them. If you want Holdaak the way it supposed to be, look past the register and make sure there are no precooked tenders laying on the counter. They also weren't hot when served. The loco fries were uneventful and the cheese was starting to clump after a minute because it was lukewarm when served. Would have been better with crushed Takis, cotija cheese, and more cilantro. For the price, there's better chicken in OC and surrounding areas. I always hear Holdaak in the conversation when talking about chicken sandwiches but just hadn't tried it for myself. Ended up getting it on UberEats so I'm not sure what the inside looks like. I ordered the Holdaak spicy chicken sandwich with daikon radish and it was good! I'd give it a 8-10. The chicken was juicy, the breading was so crisp, and then size of the chicken itself was solid. The spice level felt like a 5/10. It does linger though and by the end of the sandwich I was sweating a bit. All in all i liked the sandwich but wouldn't go out of my way to get it. Fries were definitely delicious (although not the best I've had), and it is better than the ones I have had in Orange County. Chicken strips were moist. The meat to batter/skin ratio was perfect. Chicken strips from other places have to have too much batter and not enough meat, but here, there's plenty of white meat so you'll get full. Been eyeing this place for a while since they have a pretty popular location in Fullerton. For how new-ish this place is (3 years?), it seems pretty rundown. Ordered the "Korean Spicy" sandwich. Flavoring is average, does have a nice kick tho. Their soda fountain was out of carbonation, fine. So I got a water bottle. Then I realized when I got my food that the cashier charged for the fountain drink. I kindly told her "excuse me, I think you accidentally charged me for the fountain drink instead of the water bottle" and her response was "the water bottle by itself is more expensive than the fountain drink, so I that's what I charged". The menu specifically lists both prices with $2.95/$1.45 for the fountain drink and the water bottle, respectively. Time for the dreaded update. Tonight, our party arrived at 8:35-8:40pm. Restaurant closes at 9. Staff took our order with a lot of looks at one another. Told our second half of the party who arrived 5 mins after they needed to hurry to order because the kitchen closes soon. We sat down to eat, and we know it's pushing the time but it still wasn't closing time so we planned to eat as quickly as possible. During that time the staff basically did anything they could to make us very uncomfortable including our three kids, a teen and two young (8-10 yrs) children. They slammed the metal chairs, blasted the volume for music that was meant for the clubs. The aggression was unnerving. At 9:05, the cashier said "it's 9:05, you need to finish up. We need to go home. We close at 9.." Thing is we know they close at 9. If they told us from the beginning to just take it to go or leave by 9, we would have. But during the time we were allowed to be there based off of their stated hours, the staff was having a fucking fit. My friend would have been able to finish her sandwich if the staff stopped throwing stuff around. I tell my kids to use your words. The staff here needed to do that instead of being so aggressively passive. I hesitated to write this as a long time former customer, but it was so unnecessary. There were other ways they could have communicated it to us, but they just chose violence. So definitely not a place I would recommend again to anyone. read more

I just learned today that by ordering through Yelp I have been charged at least $6 bucks extra per time. So for two sandwiches and fries plus tip, I was paying close to $34 for pick up through grub hub which is highway robbery. I know prices have gone up too, probably Putin's fault (Jk) and they give way fewer fries than they once did too which is unfortunate. I mean, there were just enough fries for two average eaters with nothing to spare. Not only that, but I needed one original, not spicy but of course there were spices all over the fries so my toddler was screaming and wouldn't eat his lunch while his mouth was on fire. I even specified no spice. Smarter for him as he had fresh berries and yogurt instead. So then I ended up having to call grubhub due to the faulty order. I speak to someone in Mexico who couldn't understand English at all which just made me feel like a spoiled entitled American trying to get her order right. I know it wasn't her fault, but it was a very painful phone call and experience. Perhaps not calling is worth the $5 extra dollars which seems insane to me, and I just wish I could have given her the $5 and called it a day. Ugh I still gave the restaurant 2 stars for the food and service, but be wary of these mark ups and errors yourself if you order. At this rate, Yelp is becoming increasingly useless when google is easier, more convenient and without hidden fees (or their actual website, at least). I must be getting old, because I long for the day when I could call, speak to someone on the phone, pay the listed price and get to eat exactly what I want because I would order what I want. Ultimately, this will make me either order from the chicken place up the road where you can call, talk to a person, pay less and get a comparable meal with personal service or just get a healthier fish taco next time. Hold up, it's time for some Holdaak. This past weekend I had a craving for fried chicken, so I ordered takeout from Holdaak in Orange. My order consisted of the Original Chicken Sandwich, classic fried chicken on a toasted bun, with caramelized onions, daikon slaw, and a thick red sauce. This sammie was absolutely delicious, and paired perfectly with their house made ranch! In the future, I'd probably ask for no sauce, since the sweet red Mariana wasn't my favorite. I also ordered a side of their Shake Fries, which were thin and crispy, and their slightly spicy Come Back Sauce. This was the perfect comfort meal! So glad to have Holdaak closer to home (the OG is deeper in west Anaheim), this place is the creme de la creme when it comes to chicken strips. Raising Canes is wonderful fast food and you can't touch that texas toast but Holdaak has Cane's beat on all other fronts. Heck Holdaak is even cheap too, cheaper than it should be honestly (but don't tell them). First off their sauce is similar to Cane's but less salty, more flavorful, with a tiny bit of a kick that is incredibly pleasant. The fried chicken is no joke 2-3 times larger than canes and instead of a kind of 'soft' breading it goes for big flakey crispy breading similar to Popeye's but fresher, larger, better (sorry not sorry). The fries are so big and fluffy with that light crisp on the outside and this super tasty subtle red seasoning you might not even notice but I'm sure takes the fries to another level. Underneath everything is a delicious piece of buttery toast but of course it can't compete with Texas toast. Still great though. If you order know that they make it REALLY fast. This place should be 1000x more crowded than it is, so get in on this before people find out about it and stop blocking that lane on Tustin for the Cane's drive-thru. They also serve chicken sandwiches but unless you love korean pickled veggies I would avoid or get without the coleslaw, I think it has pickled daikon? Something I don't fancy. They got popcorn chicken too and RANCH. GREAT RANCH. Why don't you serve ranch Cane's? Why? Then the limp fries were in a brown paper bag that was almost soaked through with oil. The comeback sauce is still bomb.
