We had breakfast there on Saturday and our experience was excellent. The dining room is large but there is enough space between the tables, so you don't feel cramped. The décor is striking, with a big floral backdrop at the entry and plenty of ornate light fixtures. You'll see all of your breakfast and lunch favorites on the menu, plus some unusual choices - Tater Tot Nachos, Smoked Salmon Benedict, Fried Chicken and Waffle Benedict, Potato-Carrot pancakes, Crab Omelet, Philly Cheesesteak Omelet, Oatmeal Pancakes, and a Bangkok Frittata to name a few. Our party of four went deep into the menu and selected Oatmeal Pancakes ($14.25), Banana Walnut Pancakes ($16.50), a Home Run Special ($19.25 for Two eggs with choice of Buttermilk Pancakes, Waffle, or French Toast, and a choice of meat; Bacon, Ham, Pork sausage links, Homemade chicken sausage patties, Spicy Andouille sausage, or Chicken apple sausage, and a Smoked Salmon Benedict ($23) with those intriguing Potato-Carrot Pancakes. Coffees were $5 each and tea was $4.25. (Welcome to San Francisco!) The Benedict and potato pancakes were mine and they were fantastic. A toasted English muffin with a pile of smoked salmon and two poached eggs, served with a small green salad and two rectangular Potato Carrot Pancake patties. We got here a little before 9:00 a.m., and there were only about four other tables, so it wasn't busy at all. We were greeted and seated right away, then waited about five minutes before someone dropped off water without saying a word. After that, we sat for another 15 minutes trying to get someone's attention. We waved multiple times but were completely ignored. When a server finally came over, she was incredibly rude from the start. As soon as she walked away, we just looked at each other in shock, wondering why someone would treat customers that way. The food came out quickly and tasted fine, but nothing special. Throughout the meal, our server never checked on us once. When she brought the check, she was just as rude as she had been when she first greeted us. We also overheard another table complaining about an issue, and she was rude to them as well, so it definitely wasn't just us. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place. The food simply isn't good enough to make up for such poor service. On top of that, the fabric-covered chairs were filthy and stained, which made the restaurant feel unclean. We waited 20 min outside for a table. Sunday around 11 am. I guess they sat a whole bunch of people before us. There's a bench outside so that's good. Wrote our name on a sign in list. The place has changed so much before covid. Before it was dreary. Now they have comfy chairs and walls like you're in a house. Lots of staff. Our orders were taken within 5 min. Given water. Needed to ask for refills of coffee and water towards the middle of meal. We both had the mix and match Benedict. Mine was benedict with broccolini and smoked salmon (salty) with crispy hash brown and tiny cup of salad. Nicely done floretine. My co eater had crab cakes (delicious) and smoked salmon Benedict with potato pancakes. Added $2 more for crab cakes (delish). She said coffee was good ($5). Omelette looked hugh. Parking was difficult to find. Got a table right away for a party of 5. It's a nice cozy place. We got the bottomless mimosas. They are pretty prompt to refill your glasses. But you can only get the orange juice mimosa for bottomless and none of the flavored ones. Our waitress wouldn't respond to us asking simple questions like "how is your day" and seemed like we were a hassle for her to have to serve. We got here on a Saturday and there was a huge line as they maintain the reservations in an old school way of pen and paper :D Although we lost hopes of getting a seat, we managed to get one after waiting for about 15 minutes because a party of 2 infront of us left the queue. But we waited a very long time before I flagged someone down and asked her to send our server our way. She said it was her and would come soon. She did, but hardly spoke to us at all after that (other than the bare minimum to take our order). I felt like I'd done something to offend her. They were starting to get busy, so I understand that part. But usually servers will come and let you know they'll be there soon. And I would see her walking around doing other stuff, looking past our table and even took orders for a table they sat after us. I came as a walk-in with a relatively-large party and, surprisingly, was able to get seated within a few minutes. We came for their bottomless mimosas, and they were very accommodating for those of us who didn't want to drink, allowing some of us to participate in bottomless mimosas while others didn't. So my family and I are here in San Francisco touring colleges for our youngest son, and we decided to check out Home Plate for breakfast! So as always, I'll begin with the good. When the waitress saw that I was running low on coffee, she was there to refill. This definitely put me in my happy place. Now for the food. The Pancakes and the French Toast I ordered, were a hit! So flavor, hot, and mouthwatering. Even while my oldest son was eating his pancakes, you could tell that the cook put a little love in making the pancakes. Now for the opportunities Home Plate should consider. My youngest son shared with us, that there was a review that said the waffles were just so so. I really think they should have listened. The waffles at Home Plate made Ego Waffles look amazing. And my Chicken Sausage Patty wasn't any better. The sausage was very dry and extremely hard. Fast forward, the table has a pile of tiny Smuckers packs, just like a greasy spoon. However, ambiance now that of a fancy hotel where breakfast is included, not much personality. I ordered a classic bacon & eggs, with many side options. I chose potato pancakes. Big mistake. What are these 2 thin square things that I'm sure are stacked frozen in the kitchen. For two large pancakes it was weird to get about 2 teaspoons each of apple sauce & sour cream. Bacon & eggs just ok. Left the bland toast on my plate. They forgot to heat the teapot water. Anyway, super friendly wait staff, working hard. Didn't take long for food to arrive. Steady stream of tourists from the many Lombard motels. 8am the back room was packed. When paying my waiter disappeared with my credit card for a long time. Most places take your card at the table so it's never out of sight. Just a suggestion here. I can see the appeal of Home Plate if you're staying nearby or want a fancy place to take grandma. For me, I wouldn't return, so many better cafes & restaurants in San Francisco. This is a hidden gem! How come I have only found out about this place after all this years? Ambiance is the best, food is amazing- try their fried avocado, server Nacha is so genuine!
