I was so excited when I stumbled upon 'Piece of Cake' and immediately connected to Maryn's story. THE CAKE was amazing - She helped me pick the flavors - Chocolate cake with peanut butter and nutella buttercream- is there a better combination?! Having tried many gluten free deserts in the past, I must say, my hopes were not too high... OH MY GOODNESS, the cake was so moist and rich, the buttercream was deeply flavorful and not too sweet- I made sure to sneak a piece away to take home and eat for breakfast the next day I am a home baker and am usually the birthday cake / treat girlie of my friends. Unfortunately due to compounding illness and disabilities, I have been unable to bake. My lack of stamina and mobility has taken away the joy that baking brought me. I didn't realize how important it was to me to find a down-home bakery until I ate Maryn's cake and watched it bring my friends together way they used to over my deserts. Even my skeptical non-gluten sensitive friends were going back for seconds. This one is so clean and kept in great shape. It is cool and comfortable inside. The cakes are just a wee bit sweet, so if you hate sweet, you might want to stick with their carrot cake. We love them all. Their chocolate cake is so good. You can get a piece or an entire cake and their prices are fair, they use the best ingredients. Their flourless chocolate cake is the best and not too sweet at all. We love their cookies. The service is ever so nice. You can order ahead and pick up or just walk in. It is never too crowded. They will also make special cakes for you. You will love this place. It is just YUM.

The vanilla cake was pretty good - I liked how they use cream cheese frosting, as not many places do that. I do think that the cake itself was dry (perhaps because it was the size exposed to air). The chocolate cake slice was pretty good! It's one of the better chocolate cakes I've had, where both the cake and the frosting taste like chocolate. It was moist, as well, which was good. The flourless chocolate cake was decent - I liked their buttercream, but the texture of the cake itself seemed a little off. The bakery is adorable and there are so many cakes to look at. The workers are also very nice and helpful.

The chocolate chip cookie with rice krispies "Summer Camp Chip" ($4.25) has delicious flavor and if you enjoy soft & chewy with a slight crisp, they hit all textural marks for excellence. This has become our absolute favorite snack to get here and I gots to have it every time I'm in. The chocolate pop tart is solid. We prefer the taste of this to the brownie cookie...we aren't big on that one. I had such high hopes because I love brownies and obvi love cookies, but alas, personal taste preference. The chocolate cake pudding ($4.25) is a rich and decadent treat that can be eaten right out of the wrapper it comes in! I was surprised I loved this chocolate cake soaked in chocolate custard with a few marshmallows and caramel on top. The Peanut Butter El Rollo is a tiny but cute little guy at $5.50. They make their own peanut buttercream for the inside filling and the chocolate is just wonderful. I like their bars One of my favorite things at Cake Monkey is the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Cakewich. This mini cakes are just $5.75 and individually wrapped so make for great little gifts to bring to a housewarming or event. Plus it's gluten-free and vegan so all our friends can enjoy it! I'd like to try some of their fizzy drinks but they were out of tonic water this morning. Next time! And there will definitely be another time with Cake Monkey Bakery! They just have SO MANY options here, it's easy to find multiple baked goods you can enjoy here. I'm a fan.

In LA, you should know how big of a deal parking is. If you have parking, you are among the elite. Anyway, the cupcakes, I got a standard for a pack with chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate, and red velvet. To me, these cupcakes seemed even smaller than the standard mini size but maybe I was just already a little butt hurt that I caved on my promise to myself not to fall into the mini fad. I have to say, the highlight of these has got to be the frosting. The strawberry and the chocolate frosting were exceptionally delicious. I would probably buy the frosting by itself if I could. A real home run there and I was definitely wishing that I had A full-size cupcake to enjoy the full-size frosting. The cakes themselves were nothing to write home about, but that could also be because it is nearly impossible to get more than two bites out of a mini cupcake, so maybe I just didn't get a chance to really experience it. All in all, these were pretty solid, and I will definitely return for that frosting alone. Unfortunately, I cannot give this place five stars because again, mini cupcakes are a total rip off. For four of them I paid almost $10. Four minis equal about a regular-size cupcake which on average is $4 or less. It would be more realistic for them to sell them at two dollars apiece, or a dollar per bite.

The cake was ready on time as a stunning 14‑inch diameter, 6‑inch high showstopper, that was going to be surrounded by matching cupcakes that looked almost too perfect to touch. From the moment the guest walked in, the room shifted. Cake lovers started surrounding the cake, anticipating a slice. Compliments were flying. The honoree and guests were excited. And photos commenced. But the true magic? The non‑cake and vegan eaters....the ones who always politely decline dessert started watching the cake eaters with envy. You could see it happening in real time. First curiosity. Then temptation. Then surrender. One by one, they threw in the towel to ask for a piece of cake. And the moment they tasted it, their eyes widened like they'd just discovered a new dimension of flavor. This wasn't just a cake. This was a phenomenon. The flavors were rich, balanced, moist and unforgettable. The texture was perfection. Every bite felt like a celebration. And by the end, everyone agreed on one thing: Don't eat another cake in your life until you've had Hansen's. Hansen's Cakes didn't just bake a dessert they created an experience that converted skeptics, united the room, and left not a crumb behind. Absolutely extraordinary.

My family has been coming to Hansen's for over 35 years through three generations, for birthdays, celebrations, and even weddings. We live in Pasadena and have continued driving all the way to the Fairfax location because Hansen's has always been our designated cake bakery. That's how much we loved and trusted them. Unfortunately, the quality just isn't what it used to be. My mom recently made the drive to pick up a cake for my sister, and I was genuinely shocked by the decorating. The border work looked rushed and mediocre, the frosting looked unfinished, and overall it did not have the quality or attention to detail that we've always associated with Hansen's. I honestly feel like I could have done a better job decorating it myself. To make matters worse, the cake wasn't properly secured for the drive home. Two small pieces of tape at the base of the cake board were clearly not enough, and the cake shifted and was damaged on the way home. It's really disappointing because this isn't just a bakery we randomly tried, Hansen's has been part of our family celebrations for decades. We have so many memories tied to their cakes which makes seeing the decline in quality especially sad. After more than 35 years of being loyal customers, I never thought I'd be saying this, but I don't think we'll be coming back.
