There are THREE layers of delicious, thick, delectable french toast, each layer stuffed with different breakfast classics (hello bacon!). It is served with a knife down the center to hold it together and possibly for you to stab any diet dream you may have had. Pro Tip: When you cut a meal in half, more than half the calorie escape! My friend had the quesadillas, which are stuffed with all the traditional breakfast fillings. It was not my taste, but fortunately, they were exactly my dining partner's taste, because he scarfed them down. Let's not forget that you are giving a small square of complimentary cake as soon as you are seating COMPLIMENTARY FUCKING CAKE did I make myself clear? The food is bounteous, honestly not very expensive considering how much we got (we will be eating this for a couple of days) and DELICIOUS!! My boyfriend and I happened to walk past this place while looking for some place to get lunch, and it looked cute from the outside, so we decided to give it a shot. When we walked in, the place was mobbed. Every table was full, every staff member looked busy, and we were waiting with about 10 other people near the door to get a place in line for a table. A woman (who I think was the owner) was acting as the hostess, and was very kind. The ambience of the cafe was downright adorable. Nice lighting, tasteful tchotchkes, even a fake stuffed bear holding a sign saying "yum." We were told we'd be seated in 20 minutes, but the wait went by even quicker than that. When we were seated, someone quickly came by and offered us hot coffee. After getting the coffee, though, we realized we had no silverware or half-and-half for our coffee. We asked someone walking by if we could get some silverware, and they returned pretty quickly with some. It seemed like there was some sort of miscommunication between waitstaff, though, as our waiter came with silverware for us too, but that was no big deal (better to be over-prepared than under!) The waiter who took our orders was very kind, and helpful with any questions we had. He took our orders, and that was that. And then we waited. For a very long time. While we waited, we noticed that the couple next to us (who had already ordered before we were even seated) were still waiting for their food. I could see that they were getting a little irritated, and started wondering about how long we were going to wait. 30 minutes went by. 40 minutes. Finally, 50 minutes after we ordered, we got our food. I'll start with my boyfriend's food as the positive part. He got a 2x2x2, and really enjoyed it. His over-medium eggs were cooked well, the pancakes were delicious, and he liked the sausage. Onto my food. I ordered a "Sloppy Skillet," a skillet with essentially biscuits and gravy and eggs with crumbled bacon on top served over hash browns. It came with a side of pancakes, which although delicious and tasted exactly like donuts, were not what I ordered (I had asked for an english muffin, but honestly after waiting for what was almost an hour for this food, I was not about to risk more wait-time trying to fix anything.) The skillet itself was alright; as another reviewer said, the gravy was thinner than most sausage gravies I've had. The biscuits were thick and not too dry, and the scrambled eggs were fine. There was not too much bacon to be found, but the couple of bits on there were delicious. What was truly the most disappointing part of the skillet was the hash browns! They were not crispy, nor cooked all the way, and the amount under the biscuits was underwhelming. Please be a little more generous with the amount of hash browns in the future! While eating, no one ever came by to refill our water or coffee during our meal, which was weird considering at most other diners/cafes I've been to, there's usually one designated person going around the whole time refilling coffee and water. I had to ask a woman who was not our waiter if we could get a coffee refill, and, after 5 minutes or so, a different woman came by to freshen up our coffee. As we were leaving, the woman who I believed was the owner asked us if we would come back, and I honestly think we would, but maybe after they figure out some of the time-problems. Everyone in the restaurant seemed so busy and to be working hard the entire time we were there, but I'm not sure why there were so many issues with getting the food out in a reasonable time frame. I know the owner explained that they had just opened, and were still working out the kinks, so I'll have to try this place out again in a few months after they've gotten into a better work flow (and because I really want to try the banana nutella crepes). read more

I'm extremely disappointed with Honeybear Cafe. It used to be one of my favorite brunch places in Rogers Park. After today though, I will no longer be going back and will no longer be recommending it to anyone. Regarding the pick up service, I had placed an order a little after 10:00am. It said that pick up would be 55 minutes. So, I arrived around 11:00am. They told me the food would be 5-10 more minutes. I waited outside for 10 minutes before checking in on the food. The food still was not done. I waited inside this time. My order was not ready until 11:30am. This makes me believe that they forgot my order entirely until I asked about at 11:00am. Regarding their mask/covid policy. I assume since they have a sign on their front door stating that a mask must be worn at all times while not seated at your table, staff and patrons would be considerate of this and wear their mask and wear is correctly. This was not the case today. While I was waiting for my food inside, I saw several staff members wearing their mask below their nose and even take off their mask while speaking with customers. Additionally, I saw several patrons walking around the restaurant, as well as enter the restaurant, and staff did not say anything about this. If I did not know better, I would guess that the staff/owners don't believe in COVID safety. I'm extremely disappointed and saddened by Honeybear Cafe. read more

The new owners have got it right! They kept the old staff from A&T and have really updated the place. It feels warm and inviting and the food was really good! The service was impeccable and was checked on several times throughout my meal by both my server and the owner. I frequented the old restaurant a few times and their service was always so slow which kept me from going back, but clearly the new ownership has stepped things up. I wish I could give this place 5 stars but I have to go with four since I am vegan and there weren't any strong vegan options.I took one of my friends here for her birthday and was so pleasantly surprised at the ambience and decor of the restaurant. I was also extremely impressed with our service - our server went above and beyond. She was very friendly, helpful and really put a lot of effort in to make sure we had a great experience. I wish I could remember her name but I will add a picture of us here. They gave us complementary baklava which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the tofu wrap and it was disappointing because it was very bland- the tofu was not marinated at all, it was plain tofu out of the box with a little bit of turmeric in it. They did have a tofu scrambler on the menu which I did not try. We had a great time regardless of the fact that I didn't really enjoy my food, however the fries were extremely delicious. You will be sure to get a lot of cute pictures in this place, and I read it is BYOB. I would definitely recommend visiting for a cute girls brunch. Went for breakfast at the A&T Restaurant, discovered it was sold and was now called Honeybear Cafe. Thought we'd give it a shot, used to come to the old A&T a lot, but not since it was sold, and of course not during COVID. Anyway, my review is mixed, and unless things change, they've lost my business. So here's the good: the food was delicious. The server was affable. They did a nice job sprucing up the interior. But that's it for the good. Now here's the bad: The parking lot in back has been repurposed with tents for outdoor dining. That means they increased capacity by about 30%, with the same size kitchen as before. And it shows. We placed our order (breakfast burrito for me, avocado toast for my wife, with coffee) and waited. And waited. Finally, my wife said, how long has it been? I looked at my watch, it was 11:15. I asked her when did we sit down? Well, she had sent a text about 10 minutes after we sat down. It was time stamped 10:30. That means we were there just under an hour. So we agreed: 10 minutes more, then we walk out. Well, food came about 3 minutes later, and it was hot, so I knew the server didn't just let it sit there. And people who came in around the same time as us started getting their food about when we did. Just unacceptable. (Interesting aside: a credit card receipt from the previous patron had been left on the table and never picked up. It was for $44, and on the tip line was a big fat zero. Should have given us a clue). Now as I mentioned, food was hot and good. But there were a few more gotchas: the music was so loud I thought I was in a bar. I asked the server to have them tone it down, and they did, but still too loud. My wife had ordered a ham slice that never came, but didn't show up on the bill, and we had plenty of food anyway, so we never brought it up. Then the worst sin, one that really sticks in my craw: they charged 4% surcharge for using a credit card. Now stay with me on this: this is wrong on so many levels. One, I sell credit card processing (I install point of sale systems for a living) and I guarantee you they don't pay more than 2.5 - 3% effective rate, meaning after all the fees are baked in. So they're using it as a profit center. Two, how many people use cash? Especially during COVID, when many businesses were credit only, to minimize contact. Since 80% of their sales are with credit cards, why not raise prices an average of 4% and give a discount for cash? (And if you're reading this, I suspect you know the answer). To spell it out, they don't want to change the price of an item to $14, and discount it to $13.50 for cash. It's just like hotels with the resort fees: advertise $100 a night, add 20 bucks in taxes, and $35 in resort fees. To sum up: I told my wife we could come back, but during the week when it wasn't busy, to minimize the kitchen disruption. But getting that bill with that 4% surcharge (and they don't say 4%, I had to do the math to figure it out) was a deal killer. I'm curious as to how many people agree with me. Until it changes, I'm done with them. read more
