    Wonton Noodle Soup
    Lisa N.

A friend once told me that the most inauthentic Chinese food can be found in Chinatown. She advised me to go to the San Gabriel Valley for a more authentic experience. But how can you say no to a nice lunch in Chinatown? I am very rarely in the downtown area, so I genuinely wanted to have lunch in the area. I chose this spot because it was open and it had some good reviews. The restaurant itself needs to be renovated as it has a very 90s vibe to it (i.e. the restaurant is carpeted). But in this economy who can afford a renovation in Los Angeles? The servers themselves are not overwhelmingly polite and exuberant over your presence. My waiter was not very talkative, but he was efficient. I ordered Orange Chicken and Wonton Noodle Soup. Now, I recommend you come to this restaurant with a second or third person because the dishes are family-size portions and meant to be shared. Or, if you're a loner, you can come alone and have tons of leftovers. The Orange Chicken glaze was as sweet as honey perfectly balanced with the floral acidity of orange flavor. The chicken was tender on the inside. You could still feel the crispy texture on the outside. It pairs well with simple white rice. The Wonton Noodle Soup was delicious. The broth is clear and subtle with chicken flavoring and herbaceous notes from the bok choy. I wasn't a fan of the wontons because they had shrimp filling. It wasn't that the flavor was off; it was more that I was not expecting a shrimp wonton. I was expecting a vegetable or chicken wonton. It felt mismatched in the broth. The noodles themselves were long and chewy! I also very much liked their chili oil. I'm not sure if it was homemade, but it was bold with spice and umami flavor that paired well with the sweetness from the Orange Chicken. Overall, I do recommend this place for take-out. It's not an aesthetically pleasing restaurant, but the food was good.

I've been looking for this place for years. For some reason every time I type in Hong Kong barbecue, it gives me another address. But I'm glad I found it. The customer service was OK, I wish they were happy to see me as I was to see them. But I guess I'm in my own little world lol. But they were very fast. When I placed in the order, it was ready within 5 minutes. The duck was delicious! I love when Duck is salty, but not too salty where it's unbearable. When I arrive, there were two couples dining in. Which I had no idea they had a dine in option. So it's good to know. I love supporting small businesses like this. Especially because half ducks only $18? Better than me getting it somewhere else for $30, and it has no flavor. And I also love the two side sauces that it comes with. I would say the ambience, is quite clean? Nothing too fancy. But your typical mom and Pops in Chinatown. I actually used the duck to make soup. Video attach. I use some of the duck broth to make the soup broth. Yummy!!

Hong Kong BBQ has a huge selection of dishes at an affordable price. I've visited several times and been impressed with every visit. The restaurant has lots of seating. I tend to visit on weekends for dinner. Even though the restaurant is always quite busy, there's never a wait to be seated. The service is efficient, and all the waiters speak Mandarin, Canto, and English. I would describe their menu as comfort Chinese food, and the portions are huge. I always have leftovers because each plate comes with a huge heaping of food. I really enjoy the Peking duck, with crispy skin and rich meat. The char siu (sweet and savory glazed pork) is another delicious option. While their BBQ meats are the most popular, I cannot emphasize how delicious their seafood dishes are as well. The fried squid with spicy salt is perfectly crispy and umami. If you're looking for the most bang for your buck, this is the best restaurant to go to. Their portions are genuinely massive, and the dishes have very reasonable prices. On top of that, their food is genuinely delicious. I've been several times, tried a plethora of dishes, and always left feeling full and impressed.

On the way home from our Yosemite/King's Canyon road trip I stopped in Chinatown Los Angeles for lunch.  While there I figured I'd get a roast duck for dinner.  My mom's go to spot Lucky Deli was closed so I found Hong Kong Bbq had ducks hanging in the display case.  I bought one for $36.  Also I bought a zongzi. I boiled the zongzi for about 15 minutes in a pot of water to get the rice to the consistency of sticky rice.  Like my mom's recipe, there were peanuts, Chinese sausage, fatty pork inside.  I loved the flavors from the ingredients and the soft rice which was full of flavor from the bamboo leaves. Roast duck was tender and juicy.  Lots of 5 spice powder based flavor.  Great tasting duck. Mom would have loved this place.  The zongzi was just like how she made it.   Happy Mother's Day.

Located in the heart of Chinatown is this little gem of a restaurant Hong Kong BBQ. More than 40 years ago when I actually lived in downtown LA I remember seeing this restaurant as they had the cooked hanging duck in store front window. Today I was in town and wanted to have lunch so I stopped in for a bite. In the main lobby is their take out section you can literally pick your meat or order off their extensive menu. I choice to din in today. Right away before entering there was a gentleman leaf blowing the store front as I arrived when in just opened (Monday @10am). Once inside I noticed this restaurant was small but they Way the tables and chairs were arranged it made this space feel open really liked the vibe. Well kept, clean, orderly the table settings were strategically placed. The server was extremely warm and pleasant and presented me with a couple of menus. I must say it was a bit overwhelming as this menu was extensive a great deal of variety. I opt for their roasted duck loMein. Upon arrival I not only received my main dish but also small soup which delicious i might add. Now this LoMein dish had huge chunks of savoy delicious roasted duck tasty and juicy at the same time. Beneath the roasted duck and the soft delicious lo mein were at least five well seasoned bon chou. I also ordered a small Vietnamese ice coffee chocolate color delicious flavored love it. I will definitely come back. Great accomondation for seating for the differently able too. I will definitely return.

Inside you can order large quantities.

Not very many people here, but it is raining. Sad when I walk the street many places are closed. I can only assume it is the economy. I wanted to add spicy chili but looks like it has been there a long time. Very limited on drinks. They say must order from drink menu. The place could use something, can't put my finger on it. Food came really quick. The portions are extra large hence the price. Problem is if you are the only person eating you cannot make a dent in the food.. Egg drop soup was not something I would write home about. I have had so much better at other places. Yes they give enough to feed a family, but no real taste to it. Staff does not check up you. They are busy talking. Fried rice was actually very good. Fluffy and even had eggs. That itself was plus. Wow so they even wrap up your leftovers to take with you.!!

Inside has a good space depending on the party size. Well lit and you can see the window scene. So far the waiter was attentive, maybe they just barely opened if the day? The food was good. Better than I expected compared to other places which has more msg to the max!! I can actually enjoy the texture and the taste of the food. Bathroom is clean!! Nice nice

Came here for roasted duck and it did not disappoint. The duck was juicy and the flavors hit the spot. I did the take-out option and I had a very good meal.

I've been coming here for years, any time I'm away from LA I miss their house special soft noddle. It's a comfort food place for sure. Don't leave without the bbq pork, it's amazing! Portions are huge! Be sure to share

Big Bro and I were tunnel visioned: SIL needed a mahjong set. We knew exactly where to get it. Drove half hour, parked at the bank half-a-block away, got to our favorite store who sells it, got the set and then started finding our way back the car. 10 minutes, tops. But walking back, we decided to stop somewhere for a drink. This was practically next door, so eh. Why not. We weren't being picky. Cool, they even had boba options! Big Bro got passion fruit green tea, I got the black, Hubbers got mango black. I can't speak for them, but mine was... meh. It certainly quenched the thirst, but boy, I can taste the lack of love in this drink! But keep in mind this is a restaurant, not a boba place. The goal was just to get a drink. Then we noticed a piece of roasted prom slap hanging with the ducks. It was small enough to feed maybe a party of five, so we purchased it and took it to go. We snacked on it soon as we got home. The skin was incredibly crispy and tasty. The inside was seasoned good, but slightly dry. This tells me it's been hangin' at the warmer for a minute. Still good. Could have been better. FOOD (and drinks): 3. SERVICE: 3. VALUE: 3. PARKING: Street only, but parking lots available for a small fee. OVERALL: 3. I might just try a sit-down experience next time to get a better overall feel of the place. I saw some food being served to patrons and they looked good! Making a mental note...

It was a but busy when we got there but luckily we got seared pretty shortly after arrival. We originally wanted to sit at the bar, but opted for a table for less wait time. When first looking at the menu we were shocked by the prices. I knew immediately i wanted to get the hui tou potstikers with pork and noodles. We ended up adding on the hongkong style wontons too. To my suprise the wontons arrived in a delicious and warm broth, keeping them perfectly moist and plump. The broth was so delicious even on a hot day, tasting faintly of sesame and scallion. Despite both dishes being pork they were so different and equally amazing in flavor. The pan fried potstikers which were CRISPED TO PERFECTION especially reminded me of black bean shortribs that you get from dimsum, fatty but hearty and had me wanting more and more each bite. The minced pork noodles were to no suprise, so good. Noodles tasted fresh, the sauce was umami with mushrooms and pork. While im not the biggest fan of mushrooms, i still ate it up. I feel it would be so good with some picked cabbage too to complement the saltiness. Most notable thing... THAT CHILI OIL. We probably used almost half the jar left at the table. It wasnt spicy at all, but it had this flavor that i genuinely have never tasted before. The texture of the chilli and sesame and the nutty flavor had me in awe. Enough to take two jars home... i would do it again. Servers were so quick, made sure everything we needed was at the table. Regardless of the crowd we were met with promptness and generosity. This that wonton place your girl tells you not to worry about forreal. Will be coming back despite the long drive from home.

That was my first mistake -- they don't even serve mu shu pork. That one's on me for not checking the menu first. I ended up getting my kung pao chicken and settled for the Mongolian beef, and veggie egg rolls. The Mongolian beef I could definitely pass on. The kung pao chicken was good at first, but somehow lost its flavor as the meal went on. The egg rolls were just okay. Nice and crispy on the outside, but too mushy on the inside for my liking. I was also pretty surprised (and a lot sad) that they didn't have hot mustard. The tea was really good though! Service was fine. The server was attentive, just clearly busy keeping up with all the takeout orders coming through. Ambience is definitely on the lower side here, so don't come expecting a nicer Chinese restaurant. It leans more Santa Ana burger joint vibes. That said, everything felt clean and they were pumping out a ton of takeout orders while we were there, so clearly they're doing something right. The menu is New American with Chinese influences served as a four-course prix fixe set, with each course having three choices, and optional additions are available. (There is an à la carte menu available in the bar area.) I went very carnivorous on my selections, choosing the beef tongue carpaccio, duck sausage, and beef short rib. There was not a bad dish among these: The tongue was tender, soft, and delicate. The duck sausage was fantastically good as well; served with an apple jam atop Swiss chard, it was a sort of Chinese-Alpine fusion cuisine of which I never envisioned but instantly wanted more. While delicious, the short rib was overshadowed by its cabbage accompaniment. My server told me it takes four days to make that dish, and I would have happily ordered a full dish of just that. The kaffir lime curd dessert was light and balanced, perfect after the heavier meat courses and like a small vacation to Thailand on a plate. The one dish I did not love was the Chongqing fried chicken course I added. The chicken itself ― a boneless leg quarter ― was a large portion and well-prepared, but the sauce covering it was a thick layer of chilis (which, thankfully, were not inedibly hot) and straight oil, lots of oil. Eating so much oil like that made for gastrointestinal discomfort the rest of the night. The soy pickles helped cut the greasiness a bit, but they weren't vinegary enough to get that level of oiliness off the palate. The duck fat rice, though quite good, also did not help much given its fattiness. Given the chance, I definitely would have requested the oil-sauce on the side. I did appreciate the crunchiness of the batter, which never went soggy despite being soaked in that oily puddle for a long time. I did not find any wines by the glass that bowled me over, so I stuck to cocktails, which were good. Service was warm, personable but not intrusive, and brisk, while the room has the comfortable feel of a mid-century modern den complete with well-worn cookbooks on the shelves lining the walls. I would happily return to try the bar menu with cocktails or when the prix fixe options change. At $68 for four courses, Firstborn's prix fixe is one of the best fine dining offers in L.A. right now, and it makes a trek up to Chinatown worthwhile.
