The staff is always friendly, and this cozy little spot on Waialae Avenue has a welcoming neighborhood feel that is so Kaimuki. The Banh Mi Style Lemongrass Tofu Burger is absolutely incredible and easily my favorite item on their menu. Everything in this "burger" is there for a reason. Perfectly balanced. Always freshly made. The warm crispy panko coated katsu on the tofu pairs perfectly with the pickled veggies and the soft bun ties it all together. Textural Heaven. The Korean Hirata Buns are massive! The texture on the tofu is better than real chicken. The Korean flavors on the chick'n, house made pickles and the kimchi aioli make this another flavor masterpiece. The house made buns are fresh and the perfect vehicle for everything going on with the flavors. Very filling! It's obvious that the food creators at Juicy Brew dedicated countless hours in balancing textures and maximizing flavors. Perfection! Vegan or carnivore, Juicy Brew is an absolute must try!

I found free street parking on 8th Avenue and walked into the cozy, colorful, clean shop. It was a bit busy with several customers ahead of me, but the line moved quickly. I asked the pleasant, efficient worker what the display case contained: Chocolate Chip gluten-free cookies White chocolate chip cookies Blueberry scones Hmmm... Chocolate chip cookie, please! It was thin, large, soft, chewy, and delicious! Maybe I'll go back for more because I didn't feel too guilty eating it!

And it all looks good! They have a regular menu--everything from breakfast, to smoothies, to burgers, to tacos, to make-your-own plate lunch. But I really like the specials menu. They change it up every week, and I plan my visits to Umeke when they serve my favorites or when they have something especially enticing on the menu, which is like every week. But I still don't get there as often as I wish I could! It's counter service and they have both indoor and outdoor seating. I prefer grabbing my food and heading back to the office. It always takes me just a few minutes, so I don't waste my lunch hour waiting for my lunch order. They even offer online ordering but I've never used that service. I imagine it would be great for a large office order. The restaurant is squeaky clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They know their food and they eagerly answer questions and provide information on ingredients and preparation. They have a passion for serving great tasting food that's good for you. But being able to get authentic Vietnamese fare at a university campus is pretty nice. I have had the privilege of trying several flavors of bánh mì from Ba Le, and I find them all compelling. The chicken, the ham, and the tofu sandwiches have been all very tasty, and provided me with necessary fuel during a stressful December. Their phở is also pretty nice. I smell it every time I pass by Ba Le. Given that there is usually a bit of a wait here, I'd say Ba Le is quite popular with the community.

With it being an assembly line-type poke place, I didn't have high expectations. Among the businesses in the area, this one is relatively empty so there was little wait. The worker was very efficient and friendly. You can select your base (rice, greens, or both), then fish, sauce, and additional toppings. I liked how they offer multigrain rice! I got a medium bowl with spicy minced ahi, which comes premade, and salmon with dynamite sauce. Medium bowls come with 3 sides, so I chose crab salad, ocean salad, and takuwan. Extra points for having takuwan because it's my favorite thing to eat with poke. When it came time for the sides, the worker pulled out a whole second bowl and proceeded to pile the container high with my chosen items. I ended up with 2 full bowls: 1 with fish and rice, and the other with sides. The quality of the food was about what I would expect for takeout poke, which is to say it wasn't super fresh but it was satisfying nonetheless. Because of the huge portions though, I only ate half and saved the rest for another meal. My experience was honestly a breath of fresh air compared to other places that portion out skimpy amounts of food.

I was pleasantly surprised :) First, you order from a sheet of paper that's available on the counter. You check off all the things you want on your burger, I got a regular cheese burger and a side of fries. It came with pickles(a lot of pickles actually), raw red onion, lettuce and tomato. You can also request to have certain ingredients such as bacon, avocado and cheese. You toss your sheet of paper in a wire plate and they will take it and make your order! It was less than five minutes, plus it was during a lunch rush so I thought it was very fast for the amount of people they served. You than go to the cashier and confirm your order with them. My burger and fries were only 7.78 and I was ecstatic!!! That's such a good price. You can also take a plastic bag from the cashier after you pay and there is ketchup on the right when exiting the cashier, and forks and napkins on your left. The burger tasted like a Teddy's burger. It was pretty big. The sauce was almost the same as teddy's. The portion of fries they gave were crazy... I could only finish half of it. You know yo girl looooves fries, but the burger filled my tummy up pretty well.
