Make sure you ask when quiet hours starts right when you arrive so you're not surprised when the "head of security" abruptly demands that you be quiet. He'll tell you to, "Go be loud in your living room, not here" and when you laugh because, "What??" he'll call you sensitive. Sorry for partying... At your bar... After the first MLB All-Star Game in Seattle in 22 years... Hooverville is fine if you want to sit quietly and drink a beer, but don't even think of bringing your group here for a good time. The power tripping is too real at Hooverville and it mostly feels like the bartenders just want to go home. For being a huge bar in an industrial and pro sports neighborhood, they treat it like a library. It's almost as depressing as I imagine 1930s Hoovervilles must have been... And it's, unfortunately, classically Seattle to shit on nightlife and Hooverville is enthusiastically sticking to the trend. Oh, and bring back the peanuts!! read more

I came here with a friend after Bark in the Park at Safeco Field the other day. They let us in with our dogs and we ended up sitting in a booth near the front door of the first bar. I have been here before and the female bartender with dark hair and a nose ring is awesome! She is always patient even when there are a lot of people, and she makes the drinks worth the money. This divey sports bar in Sodo has been a place that I have come to a total of 4 times so far, and each time I have been able to get my drinks quickly with great service. I also like that they have a bunch of bar games to choose from, and there is lots of profound graffiti that I like to add to my snapchat stories when I am in there. It's a riot! read more

Whats not to enjoy about this bar during a Seahawks home game?!? That's pretty much the only experiences I've had here and all have been good. The door guy is cute! :) That's a bonus! On the real though, the place is pretty big inside for a sports bar....big as in long! Good beer options.. fun folks to hang with during the ups and downs of the game. Haven't had their food yet, but maybe next time. I'll update the review when that day comes. The staff work hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. Nice big screens for good viewing. Parking....not so good, but it's one of those places you walk too down in Hawk Alley. Thanks you guys! White Fog? Was that what we were drinking? It was a little smokey, but I liked it. I'm not sure if it was the Pyramid Apricot Ale (from down the street) that got me going, but... dang! I had two glasses of that stuff (and I'm usually a "one beer's enough" kind of gal). I probably wouldn't come out of my way to go there again, but if I'm at the Showbox SoDo (across the street) or MAYBE if someone else has a big gathering there. I came by at 5pm (on a Tuesday) and quickly learned that there was loud music and the only food option was a whole pizza. They had open tables, though! I was looking for a place to chill (quietly), maybe read, and get some dinner... so I left. I came back at 6pm and it was pretty packed... and just kept getting more packed. The group of Yelpers eventually asked this older couple if we could join their large table because apparently nobody that was at a table wanted to leave... The pizza is good for soaking up the beer and only costs $6. It's on the small side and not particularly good.... but it's edible and good enough. It's a fun place to drink and hang out. Everyone seems to be in their own little world here. I like playing pinball. I like eating free peanuts and then tossing the shells on the floor (even though I felt like I was being bad each time). So.... guess I like Hooverville! read more

A beautiful dive bar here to serve you when you're in the neighborhood for a game or a show. It's hard to tell exactly how old this place really is--as a bar, I mean. The building is clearly not recently constructed. They have actually survived a fire already since they opened as the Hoov. It's a gritty little indestructible place. You get a sense of permanence, or at least material immortality, when you're here. You walk in and the floors are concrete, in between the places where the floors are peanut shells. There are some rather rickety bar stools, and there are some booths and tables. There's a big old bar with 22 taps and several dozen decent bottles of liquor. They mix drinks here, and they pull beers, and you shell peanuts. Past the bar there's some pinball, but I've never walked past the bar in all the times I have been in here. I've come in with a group when a buddy who tried to take a little nappy nap on the bar, but that's about it as far as moving past the seating at the bar. The beer selection here is solid, very northwest focused, very IPA-focused. They want to please the typical craft beer drinker among sports and music crowds. You can always find something tasty here. It's just a given for me when I am down here that this place is a good one for a couple two three pints. read more

This is a great little bar for prefunking before a big game at either of the stadiums. I came here recently before an M's game and the service was the best part. The bartender was very quick and polite. She was quick to refill my beer when she saw it getting low as she must have known I was in hurry to have a few drinks before I went to the game. I should also note that they have complimentary peanuts and you can throw the shells directly onto the floor. You don't get any dirty looks and I think it's actually encouraged, which makes this bar pretty cool in my book. They also have quite a large beer selection and an even bigger hard A collection, I can't imagine there is any alcohol they don't have! I wish I could remember the bartenders name, but I'm horrible with names. She was so nice and was even hugging the regulars as they came in or left. I didn't want to be left out so I got a hug before I left too! I will definitely be back when I'm in the area for a game or a show. read more

This place will always have a very special spot in my heart. I met the session drummer for Gotye here-- quite an interesting and polite gentleman. That experience aside, I love the divey, homey feeling this bar exudes. From the decent bathrooms to peanut shell-strewn floor, this place is worth a visit. It across the street from Shobox SoDo, another huge plus, and bartender was very quick and attentive. The bar is conveniently located about a quarter mile from The Stadium downtown. This is an old rustic corner of old downtown Seattle where the shipyards are located. The bar was nice and they have also a great selection of food to eat that's not just bar food I mean they have pizza and actual food to eat. The drinks are stiff the food is plentiful and the seating is plentiful. I ordered a Hawaiian pizza and it was delicious and handmade nothing from the freezer to the oven I'm talking about roll out and cut up food as best as possible traditional Seattle way. After the baseball game at Safeco Field I decided to enjoy this location and try it out it was the best decision I made that day. The bartenders were hecka cute and really sweet and attentive to the patrons. I see there are lots of locals that come here and the bartenders know their names and greeted them upon arrival and wish them well as they left. It's nice to see a traditional bar as an outsider. I believe there's outside seating but that did not have a chance to see even though I took some nice pictures. Hey did ask if they ever play a life music and the bartender said no I believe this venue would top it off with a band or a DJ to compliment their good drinks and food in the bar setting. But that's just me and my decisions. It does not reflect the greatness of their business or the food or the drinks which is what I came for. They're Blends were fantastic as well. Definitely a great place: to chat it up with people over drinks and whatnot, for people who dig the dim-lit vibe and loud crowd, and a conveniant overall bar to hop into if you're in the area. This isn't my kind of dig (I'm not a big fan of loud spaces with big crowds). I'm just part of that minority, if you get my drift. (Heck, this was the first time I've had my ID checked at the door). I did manage to meet one of the Josh's on Yelp and played some old-fashioned pinball(!) The last retro pinball machine i played was so 90's (lol) and only took quarters---no bill eater. The last time I played pinball, ever, was on an older PC arcade game---and that was after the retro! If I'm ever in the area again, I'll be sure to have some dollah billz and some quarters to get my game on, just in case. :) read more

What a fun place! I've been here many times now and every time a different type of experience. But all times, my go to bar before an event at the Showbox SODO. I learned about the pizza place next door on this visit! We had a great meal and great company talking with the bar staff while enjoying amazing drinks and cocktails. After the show, my friends and I came by for more libations and played some fun games such as 4 player pac man and skee ball! The place is very roomy and we didn't have any issues finding a seat. In fact, I have never had an issue finding a place to be at this establishment and I like that. Always a place for me here, both in the front or back bar. What else is there to say? Always feels like home, spacious, has every drink I could order, great staff, great value, cool theme of a bar with a great pizza partnership next door for food availability. Thanks! read more

I have to say, this is a pretty cool place for people watching. I definitely want to come back for the peanuts... kidding. I thought the Firefighter suit hanging up was a nice touch. I'm assuming a remnant from the fire? We kinda stumbled into Hooverville merely because we parked for $5 in the empty lot next door and didn't want to wait in the insanely long line to get into the Metric concert at the Showbox Sodo last night. I liked the eclectic style of seating: a mix of old wooden chairs, as well as benches and old diner looking booth and table sets. I also noticed that they have an interesting collection of table lamps and lampshades. Very creative. Hoping to return soon. read more

I think most people wander in here thier first time due to proximity to Sounder Games and SoDo Concerts and then you are hooked. Hooverville is a long time staple in SoDO and a casual lively bar with free peanuts, shells on the floor and pinball in the corner. Usually a good variety of music playing in the background somewhere too. The reason I keep coming back is the staff is knowledgeable about thier beer and spirits. The serve a great selection of microbrews on tap as well as infused liquors. The bartender made me a nice bloody mary here. They serve fast and percise even when busy! I saw pizza but I did not try it. Friendly, professional, sporty, casual downtown yet homey bar that everyone fits in here and I like it! Cheers! read more

I do not recommend this bar for many reasons but here's a few: I understand the whole "wear a mask until you get to your table" thing but before we walked in, we could see from outside that the people in there (which wasn't many) and bartender weren't wearing a mask and there wasn't a sign on the door, so we didn't wear one in.. this far into the pandemic, it seems like you have to check the "vibe" of some places. We walk in and are immediately screamed at by the bar tender to put a mask on. We put them on then go sit at a table. We sit for about 10 mins until we decide to go up to the bar to order.. I've been to plenty of bars where they come to your table.. you just never know I guess.. but he had maybe 3 customers so you'd think he could holler at us to come order at the bar since he didn't mind screaming across the bar for us to put on masks. So we order 2 drinks and ask if we could also order pizza (we never saw any menus, just a small paper at the bar about pizza). We get the drinks and out the pizza order in and the bar tender is just not even trying to be friendly whatsoever. I am a door mat when it comes to rude people and will be nice to the most awful people, but oh well. We go sit down and wait for the pizza and over hear someone asking about the pizza as well and he tells them their frozen and doesn't make it sound like it's a good idea to even order it. We aren't picky and just wanted some food and a drink before the show across the street. The pizza was meh and the drinks were also meh. The vibe was that the bar tender wanted everyone to just leave so we didn't stay for another drink. Definitely will take a longer walk to get a drink before a show next time. read more

The Hooverville has certainly changed for the better! I remember going here and being slightly disappointed because it was sort of seedy and dark. Now it's all updated and it feels a lot more welcoming. I like the big heavy furniture, the video games, the clean bathrooms, the drinks (duh) and best of all - the peanuts! I'm giving it the benefit of doubt and say it was the concert goers across the street that gave me an uncomfortable vibe. The security is top-notch they are cool folks the gentleman noticed I might be close to having too much alcohol I wasn't belligerent but he did cut me off which I really appreciate. Hooverville is a pretty nice gig for place to play some old school pinball, having a beer or two, and a little bit of pizza. I had a great time, and I probably give this place somewhere in the 3-3.5 stars range. I'd go here anytime before a show at the Showbox. I really like how they rennovated the building and decorated everything. It's like a classy dive, and I dig the vibe. Good for small groups, smaller Yelp events (like this gathering), etc... I dig. After watching the Oakland Athletics beat the Mariners a group of headed out to Hooverville bars in South Seattle This is the kinda bar with peanut shells on the floor and PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon) pouring. I just found out that Pabst sold out to the Russians. Hooverville has approx 12 beers on tap, plus bottles of the local brews and there shots are really generous. Another shot of Jameson's please. I didn't see any food menu or people eating so I assumed there was none. One pool table and four pinball machines. This is a great local bar for after the baseball and football games. read more

Hooverville is a great bar with a cool atmosphere and some historic chic (it's located near the site of Seattle's "Hooverville" shanty town from the Great Depression). They have a fantastic selection of beers on tap, including a number of excellent northwest IPA's. The free peanuts (and shells littering the floor) are a nice touch, but their pizza isn't very good. Sure, it'll absorb some of the alcohol in one's gut, but I'd recommend eating elsewhere before coming here. They've got some fun pinball machines and video games in the back and clean bathrooms. The only drawback is that the prices are steep: $5 for a pint, $14 for a tiny pitcher. I won't make Hooverville one of my destination hangouts, but if you're in SoDo (for a game or a show) then it is a great place to pre-funk! read more

This is a nice no-fuss, no-muss bar tucked away in sodo, across from the Sodobox. I never made it to the pre-inferno Hooverville, so anything I've got to say is based on experience with the rebuilt Hooverville. The space itself is open and airy, helped along by a set of large skylights above. It was a lot larger inside than I expected it to be. This said, there really wasn't that much seating for as large a space as it was. There are a handful of large tables, which accommodate mid-sized groups nicely, but which would be overkill for smaller groups, unless we tear down these walls and can manage to share seating with, *gasp*, strangers. The tap selection is impressive. Upon arrival, and thankful to get the attention of the barkeep in the midst of the heavy crowd (no doubt a result of the Black Crowes show that was set to start up across the street a short time later), I noticed a tap pull that had "IPA" prominently written across it, and asked him "What's the IPA?" In response, he recited no fewer than a half dozen IPAs that were available on tap. Sweet. There's an industrial-sized supply of fresh peanuts, and you are encouraged, or at least openly allowed, to toss the hulls on the floor. How magnanimous! As far as I can tell, there's no other food on premises, though I did see a couple pizzas make an appearance, but sourced from nearby Sodo Pizza. I suspect there's some sort of agreement between the two establishments, since the pizzas were ordered from local Hooverville staff. In my limited interactions with the bartenders, they seemed gracious and friendly, whether under a substantial load, or later, when the crowd had subsided. They seemed like the kind of guys who'd get to know you if you were a regular patron. I suppose in 2009, the fact that you have _any_ pinball machines is notable, and others have mentioned the presence of pinball machines as a draw, but Hooverville certainly isn't a pinball destination, having only four tables. But, if you've got a hankering to pass some time, you can get a game on there--and also be exposed, curiously, to plenty of advertising for Shorty's pinball selection. I couldn't help but wonder about the connection between Hooverville and Shorty's, since it seemed to me that there was too much stickerage for it too have been merely coincidental. Considering Hooverville is between my current place of employment and my current place of residence, I could see making an occasional stop off here after work to unwind--especially days when no large concert is going on across the street. So come on by--the peanuts are waiting. read more

Gotta agree with Jon B. This place is awesome. Severely spacious, and yes after driving by twice I finally was able to park. Sometimes there's a wiener wagon out front so keep your eyeballs peeled for that. A nice tequila selection so of course I was happy right away. A good family friend of mine has been hounding me to come down to this place for weeks. I finally made it this past Friday and man I'm glad I finally did. Billy, the owner, is down-to-earth and so friendly. He keeps a good hand on things and though it may look like it could be a rowdy place, it's not. Located on the west side of the street, between the stadium and Starbucks on 1st Ave. Look for the wine store, pull in and park in back, breeze in, return greetings, start some of your own, and get a drink. Hooverville is a working class person's wet dream. Its in an old building, peanut shells littering the floor, great beer, and old school games in the back. It has zero pretension amongst its wooden walls which is so very nice to stumble upon. The best time to go to Hooverville is when there are no games at the stadiums or a show at the Showbox Sodo. Then you get the run off rather than the actual people that frequent the place. Plus, you can go and have a half full bar on the weekend where you can hear yourself think and can have a conversation with your company. There is pizza served now and I think hot dogs used to be sold there. But you can blow that food off and keep your hands digging in the free peanut bowl. Hooverville is a great place to hang out when you're not up for a loud crowded bar. But remember don't go if there are any events in the area. read more

This is a great dive bar located just south of downtown in the SODO District. They have a ton of different games and they serve pretty decent bar food as well. I have came here many times with friends before some of the baseball games and it's always a good time. Hooverville... You are my new love... I will be bringing my friends to meet you... I met my roommate and her new coworkers here. She convinced me to come be stating that there was a free parking lot- but I should warn that I got the last spot in it at 4:30pm. I think that everyone was meeting their coworkers just as I walked in... serious. The place became more and more crowded as 5 pm hit and passed. The crowd was a mix of technology types, a group of women rugby players, and a Seattle biker gang and hangers-on. There was also a guy in a red and black flannel shirt with Bruce valanche glasses and a fellow with a dog. Free peanuts were available out of a box and they had pinball machines in the back. Hooverville has booths and tables with chairs as well as a dark wood weathered bar. It is large with high ceilings and has a very mixed dive bar feeling. The decor was fun. I people watched with my PBR (bought for me) and happily threw my peanut shells on the floor. I had a good time. The best part of the evening was when a bar fly told my friend that he had not been touched by a woman in a long time when she accidentally bumped into him getting out of a booth. I laughed so hard I would breathe and he guy kept talking as we were leaving. I would give it 5 stars- but I am picky and they didn't have any drink specials posted or obvious. read more

OPEN again. And awesome as ever! Go now, while the air still has a fresh cedar smell from the re-build (the bar was gutted by fire earlier this year). People are relaxed, there is pinball, and drinks are affordable. A major bonus, peanuts are free, and the floor is coated in shells by the end of the night. Come here if you are looking for a place with no attitude for a relaxed night out. Also, its spacious and generally good for groups. Only thing that could make it better was is SDOT would add another bike rack out front :) read more
