Nestled smack dab in the middle of your standard Midwestern neighborhood, Hot Plate is one odd bird. If you're looking for anything even remotely fancy or 'traditional', cross Hot Plate off of your list. The decor has one of those hipster/kitschy/dirty diner/eclectic/weird/Art Deco/trendy atmospheres that you typically find in a breakfast spot....NOT, haha. Definitely not your run of the mill atmosphere. Tons to look at and small details that are easily overlooked in literally every square inch of this place. I'm talking a few dozen wooden framed 80's paintings of Jesus on the wall and a bunch of early 90's board games stacked in the corner. Pretty strange stuff to have in a diner. Our experience didn't start out so great. We came in on a Sunday morning and there was a 30 minute wait. We had a flight to catch and had about 30 minutes to spare (plus time to eat) so the wait wasn't a problem. What WAS a problem was when the hostess somehow passed us over and we ended up standing outside in the cold for almost an hour, watching people who came after us get seated. After seeing this happen a couple times, we went inside and asked when we would be seated and were seated right away. Apparently they never activated our buzzer or something. Kind of annoying but no big deal, things happen. The main dining area is just as random as the rest of the place, maybe even more so, and has about 15 'diner/cafeteria' style tables. The largest table seats around six but most of the tables seat three or four people comfortably. We sat at one of the booths in the back, the cushion had been repaired with black plumbers tape haha. Nice touch! The highlight of Hot Plate for me no doubt was the food. I ordered the caramel apple french toast and it did not disappoint. It was literally like eating a caramel apple...but it was french toast. Apparently they make the caramel in house, delicious. Highly recommend. My girlfriend got the biscuits and gravy. The potatoes it came with were really good, nice and crunchy. No complaints on her dish. Extra side of bacon for me was $3.75, pricey. I will say that the food was pretty overpriced. A standard breakfast with coffee for the two of us with nothing extraordinarily out of the norm was over $40 including the tip. Far higher than usual. The prices combined with the weird atmosphere and seating snafu will probably prevent me from coming back, though I might be enticed by that french toast. I'm fine with paying a premium for great quality or higher end goods/services, but not 'just because', especially if I can't get seated on time! Incredible - Home cooked tasty food! I just learned about this place and have been back two weekends in a row. The food is flavorful and generous in portions. The location is eccentric and the staff is kind and down to earth. I would recommend the lingonberry butter on your pancakes - note you can always swap your toast for pancakes for just a small charge. It's definitely worth it. I enjoyed my build your own omelet most and have heard the biscuits and gravy are delicious. Aw man. Really wanted to love this place. The service is really friendly, though extremely slow. Loved the patio which made my morning pleasant. So 2 stars for those very key things! I found the coffee bitter though. The potatoes that came with my divorciados were just the frozen package kind, and the avocado was also the prepackaged kind which is okay, but it seems like I've been spoiled by any other place I go to - I don't think I've been served anything but fresh guac. The salsas seemed homemade, but weren't really to this Arizona girls liking (hard in MN I'll admit. )The black beans didn't seem to be seasoned with much. Hot Plate is the type of place we need more of in the Twin Cities. It's a little diner tucked away in a neighborhood with incredibly friendly staff, fun atmosphere, and alright food. That paragraph could probably stand alone as a fair review for the joint, but let me tell you more. There are some paintings of poodles that were staring at me the whole time we were eating. Plural. As in, more than one painting of a poodle. They looked simultaneously surprised, suspicious, and creepy. I could not have been more amused by them. And so goes most of the decor at Hot Plate. There's something fun to look at everywhere you turn. The clientele was, on a Friday morning, seemingly all regulars. I love places like this. We casually struck up conversation with our boothmates: an elderly couple who were cute as can be. Our kids naturally attract restaurant wildlife because they're so stinking adorable (that's an unbiased opinion, by the way), and we are the types of people who love chatting with strangers. I know. We're weird. The food was good, not great. I didn't need it to be great, honestly. It's also fair to mention that I've legitimately never seen my 2.5 year old son eat as much at a single sitting. He put pancakes and breakfast potatoes into his food hole and annihilated it like he was a human woodchipper. I found the menu to be fairly diverse for a breakfast joint and I'm already looking forward to trying something new next time we go. Our service was A+. Fast, attentive, and genuinely friendly. If a greasy spoon diner and a garage sale had a tryst in a church basement, Hot Plate would be their breakfast-y spawn. Once you walk in, you're immediately overwhelmed by the kitsch-y knick knacks everywhere. Paint-by-number paintings adorn the walls and gnome statues are on the tables. Think more grandma's basement than ironic hipster hangout. The food is simple and the coffee is hot. The menu has breakfast standards (omelets, scrambles, pancakes) but also has some variety (pumpkin buckwheat pancakes, a remixed version of huevos rancheros, biscuits and wild rice gravy) to keep things interesting. The icing on Hot Plate's cake, or the macrame on a decorative owl in your great aunt's basement if you will, is the staff. They are SO friendly here. What a fantastic little jem. Not only is the decor fabulously kitchy, but the food is fantastic! I got a scramble with smoked trout, cream cheese and asparagus. It was so flavorful, and filling. It also works great for a low carb diet, as long as you don't indulge in the (per my friend) delicious home fried potatoes. I kid you not, they were super tempting! My table-mates both got gorgeous fluffy looking pancakes that seemed to go over well too. I would definitely visit this place again, whenever we're back in Minneapolis. I'm optimistic. This is a 3.5 star review, really. The wait for Sunday brunch was obscene. But the $3 mimosas were good. The $2.50 coffee, not so much. Its a cup of coffee, folks. It should not cost almost as much as breakfast booze. The food was pretty good. I had the greek scramble, which came with way too much food for me. The carmel apple french toast and the pumpkin waffle were outstanding though, I would suggest those and not the egg dishes. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything super special. There's something really special about Hot Plate and it's not just the great food on the menu. The staff is friendly and attentive, the homey atmosphere feels right and the decor is just funky enough to make you want to look around and check it out. But it is the food that will bring me back again. I had a hard time deciding if I was going to order the pumpkin buckwheat pancakes or the Grand Marais scrambled eggs with trout served with grilled asparagus and fried potatoes. They both sounded really good, but the table next to us had ordered the Chorizo Breakfast Burrito and the peanut butter pancakes and couldn't stop talking about how amazingly delicious their meal was so of course that was what we ordered. Peanut butter pancake? Really? Oh, yes, don't knock it until you have tried it. Let me tell you right now that it is incredible. The burrito was large enough for two people to split filled with black beans, scrambled eggs and chorizo then smothered with a delicious made from scratch chipotle sauce. I do love guacamole and recommend that as a side. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a great breakfast place. For those of you who are allergic to nuts make sure you tell your waiter so they can tell the kitchen to cook your breakfast item in a separate pan to avoid cross contamination. I got ham, spinach, cheddar, and it was all bland. The toast was thin n sad. The green salsa had zero spice, not even MN black pepper spice. Oatmeal: runny n thin slop, no texture, and no flavor. We added cream, brown sugar, and raisins... still bland. Bacon: Cold, dry, and flavorless. I was initially teetering on a 3.5 star review but decided to go ahead and round up for Hot Plate, mostly because of the unique ambiance rockin' this establishment. I love the paint-by-numbers artwork, strange (possessed) children dolls, and enormous clock. It's awesome when places strive to be different. In my opinion the food is good, but not fantastic. In itself, probably enough for 3 stars. Meals are affordable, seemingly of decent quality, and are sizable enough to satisfy and then some. My fellow restauranteers seemed to like it much more than I did, so maybe I am off-base (but hey, ultimately I rounded up). In my two visits I ordered the breakfast sandwich and breakfast burrito, but then scored plenty of leftovers off others' plates. I sampled a couple kinds of scrambles as well as the pancakes. Like my sandwich and burrito, everything was definitely above average. Since Hot Plate is fun AND close to home I can see it becoming a regular breakfast spot for us, especially in bad weather. Listen here my fellow Minnesotans this place does not serve beer. If you want your morning "coffee" fix, this place will make you take your thirsty ass somewhere else. Parking is a bitch and the people who live on the street like to look at you like a psychopath when you get out of the car, as it's street parking thereby forcing you to park in front of Ethel's creepy lawn gnomes. Upon entrance, the servers offer you fresh brewed coffee because the place is so jumping they know you're going to be waiting 2 hours, even though they'll tell you it'll only be 30 minutes. That part blows. Decor is pretty neato burrito (they do serve egg burritos). They have all sorts of quirky little porcelain figurines and decorative paintings that seem to watch you as you stare aimlessly at the wall, waiting for your shot at some grub to fill your tummy. On the plus side, I had some swag ass egg sandwich with some hashybrowns. My girlfriend ordered some egg/meat plate with pancakes and that liger berry bullshit. Our server was very concerned with our daily consumption on fiber. My girl ordered some egg bullshit which came with toast. She asked if the toast could be left off of the order, to which the server insisted that she had to have it. When the food came, the eggs were not cooked properly to order. The pancakes were pretty great, and the liger berries were pretty fucking fantastic. The toast, however, has a story of its own. It not only appeared, but also tasted, as if it had been left to wander the sahara desert for months, desperately searching for an owner who needed more fibre in their life. Granted, I loved the interior: the pictures, paintings, knick-knacks, old men statues that says, 'even dirty old men need loving.' But such wasn't enough to capture the magic in my eye. Ate here for the second time this morning. My first time was great because the staff was extremely nice and accommodating. This morning was a little different.... We (a party of 4) arrived for a late breakfast and expected a wait. When we approached the front counter and told them how many we had in our party we were greeted with "it'll be a 30-40 minute wait..could be longer, could be shorter"....which came with an attitude. The first time I ate here, we didn't get the attitude. The waiting area was overflowing outside so we grabbed some coffee and stood outside. There were no benches open but there was a stack of chair that were calling our names. Only problem...they were chained up. My step father went in and asked if we could get them unlocked....10 minutes later a server stuck her head out and said "I asked about the chairs and he doesn't want to"....ok? I'm pretty sure "I don't want to" shouldn't be in a restaurant owners vocabulary. The guy who brought out our food made some condescending remark....when he asked who ordered the burritos, my father and I raised our hands and as he dropped the plates in front of us, said "should've guessed...". Long story short, attitude can make or break a restaurant experience more than the food....except for bad chorizo....it was amazingly bland. My friend brought me here in Minneapolis when I was nursing a MONSTER hangover. Hot Plate was the cure. The menu was great upscale diner grub. I went with the BLT omelette. Mmmm...bacony, cheesy goodness mad me forget the massive amounts of beer ingested the night before. The decor is very fun and funky, yet not over the top. What makes this a 5 is that the owner really cares about her clientele. My friend and I both had no cash and it was below 0 out. Sometime between ordering and food arrival, their card reader went down. We offered to find an ATM. The restaurant refused and took care of us. My friend is a regular there and I'm sure this cemented his choice of breakfast spot for years to come. I don't live in Minneapolis, but I like to patronize businesses that build relationships with customers. If I lived in Minneapolis, I would be a regular here. read more

There is a free coffee bar while you wait, toys for kids, and outdoor waiting area as well as inside and everyone is moving fast and working as a team to get everyone taken care of. Hot plate is pretty good, not great. Their food is usually tasty, but the menu is very limited and a little pricey. Plus, they don't serve lunch on the weekends, which is when I normally go. That really reduces the options, especially when you've been here many times and want to try something new. I've had most of the stuff from the breakfast menu, and while it's mostly solid, none of it is anything I crave and must go back for. The eggs benedict is just OK, and a lot of the breakfast dishes come with mediocre fried potatoes. So you'll find yourself stabbing at these little potato chunks with your fork, and I always wonder why they don't have better potato options. Their breakfast burrito is huge and filling, and their waffles are good, but I'm usually not inclined to spend $8 on a waffle. The scrambles and omelettes are pretty good, but not amazing. I do want to return to try their short stack pancakes. That's one thing I've never tried here. The place is cozy and bizarre, and while the paint-by-numbers schtick is cool the first few times, after a while it can become a bit annoying. The servers here are sometimes a bit tempestuous when it comes to any variation of what the menu says. $2.50 for coffee borders on insulting. This place has some character though, and I would definitely recommend it over a national chain. read more

I'm definitely charmed by this place. What is it about Minneapolis that if something were this kitschy in another city, it would just seem like it's trying too hard, but in Mpls., it solidly works? I love all the paint-by-numbers on the walls and figurines on the tables. I'm glad I don't have to dust the place. The coffee while you wait for a table is not *free* as others have suggested (it is charged to your bill) but you get to enjoy it while you're waiting for a table, which is a terrific perk! (Get it? "Perk"? Ha). The menu isn't huge, but that's okay. They offer enough different genres with a few outstanding examples of each type of breakfast per genre. I had an omelette, which I was assured by both my cousin (who'd been there before) and our server that the eggs would not be overdone or brown at all, but when it came to me, the eggs were brown and rubbery and overdone and I had to be That Guy and send it back. Argh! But they were nice and quick about it, so when I got the new one, it was delightful. Another great thing about Minneapolis (as opposed to, say, Chicago) is that the omelettes really are omelettes and not scrambles. That means that the filling is tucked nicely INSIDE the eggs. (Are you listening, Chicago????) I had tomato, spinach, and mushroom and it was very delish. Speaking of scrambles, I tasted the boyfriend's Grand Marais scramble, and it was good but very fishy. The manfriend and I orginally were going to try out May Day Cafe, but then realized that it was just that... a cafe - not much of a breakfast menu. So, we headed down about twenty blocks to Hot Plate - thank goodness for blackberries and internet! The nice lady told us that it would be a 25 minute wait, which only ended up being about 10. Score! We decided to belly up to the bar area (I think they actually only have four bar seats). I wanted to try out something different than my usual omelet and hash, so I went for it... the madre of spicy breakfast foods - the mexican burrito. This thing was freaking massive and my tummy stared churning the second I saw all the red sauce atop of it. Blackbeans, eggs, cheese, chorizo... all swaddled in a tortilla. That baby was delicious! Not that I eat babies... but you comprende what I'm sayin'. The manfriend got the basic omelet and potatoes. Even by dinner time, he was still raving about my burrito. It was that good! The only downfall... ONLY downfall... was the waitress. Please, as much as it sucks, don't complain about your tip from you last customers in front of current customers - it just makes you sound snotty. I can't sympathize with you as I've never served, but it makes me not want to tip you even more (but I did.. Almost 30%, but only out of guilt!). Huge omelettes, quirky interior, coffee as soon as you walk in the door - what's not to love? Walking into this place is like entering a flea market of paint by numbers pictures and crazy decorations. There are stacks of board games on corner tables, a variety of crowded chairs off to the right of the register to sit and wait. I have yet to try anything on the menu that wasn't great. Simple eggs and pancakes are delicious as well as any of the make your own omelet options. Wild rice sausage gravy was a little off the beaten path in the world of biscuits and gravy, but still delicious. Most recently tried the breakfast burrito...it's HUGE and amazing. One suggestion - if you're at all leery of soggy food, ask for the chipotle sauce on the side. It comes poured alllll over the top. I didn't mind so much, but I know that was a big turn off for my dining partner. Servers are friendly and efficient. This place is clearly a neighborhood gem with lots of regulars. There are friends having deep conversations over coffee, young moms with kids in baby carriers, and older couples alike. Come one, come all -- be prepared to wait for 10 or 20 minutes for a table. Went on a Sunday morning to celebrate our anniversary. The decor reminded me of my Grandmothers house. Service was great! Both of us liked our meals. Coffee was strong just the way we like it.
