What a meal, what a menu. First what a happy hour, the bar was packed on a Wednesday, but I still was able to get my happy order under the wire, 3 drinks for 14.50?? (Plus tip) walk away from a bar w/3 drinks for only an Andrew Jackson? Take that inflation gremlins. Second, wonderful beer selection and the cocktail list was and entire page long. My parents said their Cab. and Chard. wines were very good. Third, the she crab soup was highly recommended and boy is it a treat. Get it. Fourth, the menu is tough to choose from, it's big and looks good at every point and the starters menu is HUGE. We chickened out and ordered mostly from the starters menu and shared. Basically did a tapas menu. Had the she crab soup, the blue cheese salad wedge with bacon and something crispy (amazing), the triple tuna special, Brussel sprouts, and tuna tacos. And to our chagrin we ate it all. So good. Desert, hey we aren't working thus week. The carrot cake. The slice they brought was gigantic, I have no words, and we loved it. Finished about half of it. Grant and Naomi were wonderful and very attentive. Oh they give you an attractive pitcher of water for the table, I always like that. Great find thanks to the front desk of the Delta hotel. This is my second time coming here in the past 2.5years. This time I was able to bring my husband along. We started with the crab dip, which came with 2 newly baked pretzels. He loves fresh pretzels and was so impressed that they were available. The dip however was just ok, but the pretzels definitely elevated it. Drinks were the peartini and the mango mojito. The peartini was crazy flavorful. The mango mojito was so good I couldn't tell if there was alcohol. Paper straws are good for the climate but hard to drink mojitos. Lol. He ordered the steak with the steamed shrimp and spinach. I ordered cedar plank salmon with Brussels and string beans. He really enjoyed the steak and said it tasted like something he would make at home (he is a great cook). He specifically said, the cook really cared about how the steak would turn out. My salmon wow! Cooked to perfection. I wish it was a bit more flavorful, but it was cooked very well. Literally melted in my mouth. Adding some of the crab dip added more flavor to it. I did pick up on the smoky cedar. Very good touch. We ended the night with a huge slice of chocolate cake and carrot cake to go. Rating to be continued on that. Upon entering I loved the atmosphere, they seemed very busy but to my surprise we were seated right away. The waitress was very nice and the food was delicious. My only complaint was that the seasoning was not balanced throughout the bronzed salmon. The first couple of bites were very sweet and the following was like a spoonful of salt in my mouth. Also maybe there was a sign I missed but they charge a fee if you pay with a card doesn't matter if its debit or credit. So my 181 bill became 188. I did have cash but not enough to cover tips. If you are looking for somewhere to go on a Saturday night, this place is worth skipping. Hot Tuna. Wow, where have I been? It's been since 2010 maybe???? When I was here last, It wasn't anything like what it is now that I can recall. I remember it being more of a...party type scene, live music, loud, and overall younger type crowd having a good time. Needless to say, I didn't eat or even notice food but more so the drinks and lively people I was with all having a good time celebrating their birthday. It wasn't a bad place and from what I knew back then, it had a certain crowd and atmosphere you either got down with or not. It was also a bit of a "hike" from where I lived at that time and didn't want to be caught out there with a very expensive Uber ride or at a higher risk getting home. Fast forward to the current day, it was an early "Happy Hour Time" that the wife and I had together, and wanted to try a place different. I've heard from many clients how good Hot Tuna was but again, I was thinking of how it was that particular time I was there. We did move closer to this side of town that made this more in reach and saw how things have changed from word of mouth and appearance. I said to the wife "hey, lets check out Hot Tuna" as she never been here but also heard good things about it. We got there right around 4:30 and was surprised with the difference right away when walking in. It was as if I never been there and hard to place how it was over 10 years ago vs what I was seeing now. It was the wife's first time and she thought it was very nice. The open outdoors vibe that connected to the inside that had a soft, shadowed feeling but yet still connected, the additional seating area inside if you want to have a more romantic atmosphere, the outside bar if you wanted to laugh and be a bit more social... it had many levels of chill which was great. We sat in the covered outdoor area just before the fire pits feeling the nice warmth of the heat coming in even though it was nice out. It was windy so that little heat gave some warm spurts that was nice. The vibe was awesome but then we got the menus and looked at their happy hour selections and prices...Oh man, this was the game changer for us being we love happy hour and this did not disappoint! The drink deals was mind blowing getting high quality for such cheap prices and then the food choices were amazing. You literally could order off the appetizer menu (which was discounted for happy hour) and be fine with just that. We saw several people doing exactly that but for us, we wanted to get something off the main menu taking note we will be back without a doubt. I was in the mood for some seafood so I got the salmon and the wife tacos along with several orange crushes that rival "you know where" all day long! The food came out looking amazing! The risotto with the perfectly grilled salmon and the flavors??? Geeesh I was in heaven. The wife was in such a happy place with her food, all you could see was a smile with the sun on our faces really enjoying this time together and saying to ourselves..."why haven't we been here"? It instantly went on to our list of returns for our adult nights out and was very happy with everything. It is nothing like I remembered granted I don't know what the night life is like and how all of these amazing areas could turn into a solid "grown folks" hang potentially still having that lively vibe but, for what we like which is that great happy hour time frame and deals, this place is hard to knock down. We went here at the recommendation of my partner. Its located at the end of a strip mall on the north side of town, back from the beach a little bit. One of the draws was the Sharknado for the kids- a fruity non alcoholic drink with a plastic shark filled with grenadine- so you can dump the "blood" from the shark into the drink. Service was friendly and fast throughout the night. We shared an order of the burrata flat bread and the poke tacos. Both were done well- the flat bread had a nice balsamic glaze added to it to go with the burrata. And the poke tacos were a good portion size with lots of fresh tuna and a nice side of sriracha slaw. Hot Tuna is a must visit in Virginia Beach! When I say the entire menu is amazing that is an understatement. They have everything from fresh Ahi Poke bowls to incredible Smashburgers and lots of amazing specials such as their mixed grill. It is a lively atmosphere that has you coming back over and over. Perfect for a girl's night out or a wonderful date night meal. They have incredible cocktails, margarita flights, and don't get me started on the crushes. A friend and I came here on a Friday evening. It was Virginia Beach Restaurant Week and we made reservations a week ahead because we knew they'd be super busy. I am so glad we did, we had 7:15pm reservations and got there at about 6:30pm. We were able to score some seats at the bar in the screened-in deck to wait for our time slot. We ordered some drinks and a Chesapeake Crab dip appetizer. OMG this was delicious! It came with 2 large pretzels. I ordered a coconut crush and this was also amazing. Our bartender was super sweet. Talking with her made the time go by so fast that before we knew it, the hostess came in to tell us our table was ready. Their pre-fixed menu for Restaurant Week was $35 for 3 courses. They had a lovely menu selection. I ordered Caesar salad for my appetizer, salmon with green beans and mushroom risotto, and death by chocolate for my dessert. Everything was amazing! The salmon was cooked to perfection, the salad had just enough dressing, and the chocolate cake was wonderful. The blue crab special was pretty good, so were the oysters but the tuna appetizer was pretty bland. The service was slow and mediocre. My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our date night here at Hot Tuna. We made a reservation and were seated promptly. We recommend placing one for sure. We tried to go another night and it was an hour wait. There's definitely a bar scene for those into that. Many people have told me their tales of their party days enjoyed at this place. As for what we ordered, we shared the Chesapeake Crab Dip, which is served with two hot, salted pretzels. I loved it, and my boyfriend could have eaten the dip with a spoon - it was so good!! The pretzels were a perfect accompaniment. For my entrée, I got the yellowfin tuna sandwich, medium. Next time I will probably go medium rare, but it was so flavorful! The basil pesto mayo is great - I ordered a side of the mayo for my fries that came with the sandwich and it was great! The french fries were yummy on their own too. They were crispy and seasoned. And for my boyfriend's entrée, he got the Absolut Chesapeake. It was a perfect portion, full of fresh, succulent seafood and smoky bacon. The fun part of the evening was enjoying a Mocktail Sharknado, and taking a video of the grenadine pouring out of the mouth of the toy shark into my drink, which was hilarious for me as an adult. My dining pals, enjoyed raw and cooked oysters of varying types, and mostly enjoyed the butter bourbon oysters. The single plate, tuna dinner was gigantic. And my poke tuna was delicious. Outside looks okay but inside looks like chart house by the Marina theme, Ahi was very fresh, crab dip with warm pretzels was nice , calamari not so much ( small rings) , battery shrimp was so good but happy hour priced $8.00 but only 3 pieces! , at least 4 ! I don't have any good impression with restaurants close to Oceanfront cuz the ones I've been to are expensive AND the food ain't good, but my friend convinced me to come here with her because her friends had been telling her about this place, unfortunately I was right... The service was very nice, our waitress was attentive and helpful with suggesting food and drinks, the atmosphere was nice, half bar half tables, sadly the food and the price were meh other than my risotto. We got the Fried Calamari and it said it comes in a "sweet lime chili glazed". Turns out it was just some Thai sweet n chili sauce that I use for my spring roll, and the Calamari was lukewarm too. I'd rather have a fried Calamari with marinara/tartar sauce on the side tbh... We also got half dozen of baked oysters with different flavors, can't remember the exact name but they were buffalo butter, olive something and i forgot the last one. Sadly they all tasted weird to us because those flavors didn't match oysters, and the oysters were pathetically small. I got the Original Hot Tuna Mojito with Dragonberry. It was $10 and it tasted like a berry soda with some mint. I tasted NO alcohol but lots of sugar I had to ask for soda water to make it less sweet, and just drink it as a flavored soda (that doesn't deserve $10...) The only delicious dish was my entrée, the Blackened Shrimp & Mushroom Risotto. The risotto was creamy, cheesy amd full of aroma of mushrooms. The shrimps were well seasoned, huge and fresh. My friend ordered the Absolut Chesapeake and she said hers was a meh. She said the sauce was too watery. Will I come back for the risotto? Yes. Will I come back for ANY other food and drinks? Place was pretty hopping tonight. I had made reservations a month prior to make sure my boyfriend and I were able to go on Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, we ended up being late, but I made sure to call in and let them know, and they were able to accommodate our 30 minute difference. We ended up being seated on the closed in patio area, which was honestly better than if we had gotten a booth like I requested. It was way less noisy, and more mellow for a date, which I liked. They had also put up a bunch of decorations for the occasion, which was cute. Our waitress was nice and made sure to check up on us throughout the night. We got our drinks fairly quickly despite the bar being packed along with the rest of the place. We also ordered all our food at once, and our waitress made sure we had time in between our app and our meal, which was appreciated. The oysters were pretty good, very huge as well, I was very shocked at that. Only thing that could've made it better would be if there were two little forks rather than just the one we got. I say this because whenever I unraveled my silverware I was surprised to see how long the utensils were. They're like a whole 8 inches! In saying this, it was thus a bit awkward to use with the oysters. Anyways, the salmon was wonderful! I loved how smokey it was, and it was cooked perfectly. The green beans could've been more tender, it felt like they were almost raw with how much stiffness they had left. The mushroom risotto on the side was great. Good flavor, and nice texture on the rice, although it could've been less thick. The other risotto was the same, but it was a bit better than mine I think. It was more cheesy in taste, and the blackened shrimp atop were cooked well and super flavorful. The one scallop was also buttery in texture and seasoned nicely as well. I'll come here again to try their more casual options if I'm ever in the area or something. Overall, great place, interior is nautical and charming, the staff are nice, and the food is lovely. We were visiting from out of town and looked for a happy hour spot. Hot Tuna did not disappoint! We pretty much went down the happy hour menu. All of the oysters that we tried (Rockefeller and Chipotle Bourbon Butter) were great. I think the Chipotle Bourbon butter is a bit more unique and had great flavors but nonetheless, a solid choice. We followed everyone else's advice and ordered the calamari. The texture was really unique and eat bite packed in a good amount of crunch. Would highly recommend that too. On the pursuit for outdoor seating with a heating system in January during the pandemic brought us to Hot Tuna. In front of their restaurant are a few fire pits with full service. However, it was so cold and the fire pits didn't do the trick, we ventured inside to order takeout at the bar. Inside being packed, we tried to keep our distance to keep safe. Overall, this place is just okay. Service wasn't very friendly and the nothing stuck out to us from the menu. In the end, we ordered the golden salmon and it was a little too sweet. While at Virginia Beach this week, I found the best restaurant to eat. My server was so helpful (Ashlynne). She told me the fried shrimp was good, and it was!! The breading had a wonderful seasoning that was just right. This was all on their Happy Hour Menu. So then I got a Blackened Shrimp Taco. Oh my word. It was also on their Happy Hour Menu, so it was small. Honestly, the best Shrimp Taco I have ever eaten. I cannot wait to go back! The taco, Fried Shrimp and a drink...total was only $17.00. Got another chance to experience New Years to bring in 2024 this year. VIP tickets were 99$ for all you can drink (well drinks, beer, and orange crushes). Can't remember if they also allowed shots the last time, but didn't this time. They also brought out burger sliders and pizza some time through the event. The burgers were awesome, the pizza on the other hand had me running for the bathroom. Honestly, didn't have as much fun as I thought I would. Not everyone was vibing with the DJ that was brought in and only a handful of people were actually dancing on the floor if you could even move. Most of everyone else were just standing around the bar and tables, stuffed like a bunch of tuna's inside a sardine can; really felt more like an open bar than anything else. They didn't have the outside bar open either I guess cause it was too cold, even though they had the fire pits going. The first time I came here in 2018 or 2019 they had the silent disco for new years and that was one of the most fun nights I've ever had definitely a 15 out of 10, but this year was definitely disappointing feeling more like a 3/ 10. Me and my friends definitely felt we should have made plans somewhere else. I'd still love to see what plans Hot Tuna has for next year, but this year wasn't it. read more
