Everything about this place is amazing. This is the kind of restaurant that I hate telling people about because I want it to be mine... ALL MINE!! I looked at housing in the area because I want easy access to this place - it's that good. Finding dining options in the area that offer a great menu with quality ingredients and excellent service has been challenging, and Houndstooth nails it. From the atmosphere to the execution of both the food and drinks, everything is five stars. I love to sit at the bar on Sundays for brunch and watch the chefs and mixologist do their thing. We went tonight not realizing it was officially their first night of regular service. First, let's just acknowledge that the service was flawless. The waiter (Raymond) was terrific. He explained the menu style (typically sharing, which we love) and walked us through the cocktail menu. The food, which was both beautiful and delicious was presented by the chef. How does that happen? Many might have known she was the chef, but we were clued in because 1) she had the chef coat on and 2) we recognized her from the publicity photos that had advanced prior to the restaurant opening. We ordered the pickled beets, vietnamese chicken wings, BBQ carrots, the haystack salad and the pork pasta (which had a much fancier name that I can't remember). Although we loved them all, ourr favorite dishes were the pickled beets, the BBQ carrots and the pork pasta. And let us not forget the hand crafted cocktails, which were stunning. Let's just say that the meal was so good that we texted friends to tell them they had to try it and before we left we had made a reservation to back in two weeks. After waiting several months, the hubbie and I finally decided to try this new restaurant. We had the opportunity to informally try some of their food while the restaurant was still in their Kickstarter phase, and were looking forward to experiencing their food in a formal restaurant setting. Knowing this area, we were pleasantly surprised and pleased by our initial visit - hopefully the owners will be able to maintain this level once the heavy tourist season traffic starts. This restaurant does not fit the typical profile of other local eating establishments in this area. The thoughful care taken by Cheyenne and James in the renovation and updating of the interior and exterior spaces reminded us of various modern/upscale places that we have visited in Chicago, New York and the Northwest. To have access to that level of execution without having to make the 2+ hour journey to a major metropolitan area is a definite plus in our books. The price point reflects the target audience to which Houndstooth is marketing - while we felt that the caliber and execution of dishes justified the prices listed, it will definitely exclude a portion of the local dining population that values quantity over quality. The savory items we sampled were wonderful vignettes of layered flavors and textures. We mainly focused on the small/shareable offerings, so that we could get a sense of the chefs' approach and cuisine references. Blending tobiko into the cultured butter for the bread and butter plate of the day gave a unique crunchy foil against the soft texture of the fluffy Japanese milk bread rolls as the butter melted into these hot brioche-like pillows. While other reviewers complained that the wagyu beef tartare was overwhelmed by the other ingredients, we thought that the addition of capers and black truffle pieces helped augment the beef's high fat content. The fried sunchoke leaves topping the tabbouleh salad gave that dish a needed layer of crunch and contrasted nicely against the diced apples and chopped nuts. The pickled profile of the beets was deftly balanced out by the rye bread finger smeared with herbed cream cheese. And the subtle horseradish flavor added a needed dimension to the creamed Brussels Sprouts salad that was paired with the roast chicken. We sampled all of the current alcoholic cocktail offerings and the hubbie gave his stamp of approval, saying they demonstrated a deft balance of flavors. And we were impressed to hear from our waiter that chef Cheyenne helped author the cocktails. A couple of small details that remind you that this restaurant is not in a metropolitan level and is still in their infancy stages: - The standard still water is not filtered, so you can taste the chlorine from the public water. This was a disappointment since both the food and cocktail offerings had complex dimensions of flavor and the chlorine negatively impacted our tasting experience. Running the water through a simple filter to remove the chlorine taste could help address this hiccup. - The decision to serve some of the shareable items in small tall bowls did make it slightly awkward to support multiple noshers. Providing a dedicated spoon with those dishes helps, but it still assumes that your party is open to 'family style' dining. - No vegetarian entree options or notes in the menu to designate vegetarian or vegan dishes, which was a big surprise. So this place is not even an option for our vegetarian and vegan friends, since there is no guarantee that they could eat anything from the food menu. - A small dining space with lots of hard surfaces = a high noise factor. We were fortunate to be seated in one of the storefront window alcoves, but the high background noise could be heard when I called the restaurant and when you first walk through the entrance. This reminded us of the same noise issues that plagued Ideal Place, another local ambitious restaurant that didn't last. Hopefully the owners can address this going forward, as it's never good when ambient noise results in fellow diners 'sharing' in your conversations. - Since square footage is a premium there is no formal greeting station or entry transition area, so it can be a little awkward to check in if the front person is not immediately near the entrance. - While the savory offerings were mostly on point in terms of flavors balance, the unforeseen disappointment was in the dessert offering - specifically the chocolate panna cotta. The combination of bittersweet chocolate panna cotta with a very salty caramel layer resulted in a dessert with too heavy of a bitter salt profile that even the sugar in the peanut brittle tuile could not balance out. We're crossing our fingers that Houndstooth is able to overcome these small issues to become a long-term fixture to downtown Benton Harbor. read more

So we go to the houndstooth at 5:30 on a Friday, there's no restrictions on seating in Michigan restaurants as we speak. There's 4-5 tables open in the restaurant 7 tables outside with no one in them. My wife stood there for 5 minutes with the place almost empty and no one acknowledged her presents. When they finally did say some to her the first words out of their mouth were "do you have a reservation? You can't get in here with out a reservation, we might be able to seat you at 7:00 o'clock." Our family owned 3 restaurants if you can't squeeze in two people at 5:30 with that many tables open then you have a serious problem with a service endeavor. That's a normal situation in any restaurant. It would be different if we came in at 6:30 - 7:00 o'clock prime time on a Friday and wanted to get in, but the place was dead, and we would have been there 35-40 minutes. Now instead of me writing a great review of their food they get this, customer service is time, experience, and taste, in hospitality management of a restaurant. You must be doing well if you can just turn away $150 bill on a whim and a reservation. Good luck. P.S. there's nothing on their website nor on Yelp saying you need a reservation to attend their place of business, might have saved us a 30 minute drive if they would advertise that fact, plus we would have made a reservation if we knew that. read more

Great first meal - perfect for a date night or evening out with friends. Fun atmosphere and staff were amazing! We met both chefs, a brother-sister duo. The mixologist was very knowledgeable and it was fun watching her whip up one amazing drink after the next. We sat at the bar and enjoyed several draft beers - the son of juice on draft is amazing! The crispy potatoes were amazing and the wings were so unique! The panzanella was incredible! Fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and great combinations. Foodies rejoice! Easily the hippest place in the St. Joe/Benton Harbor area. I finally got the opportunity to go last night. I'm not really into shareables, but the benefit of that is being able to try all of the amazing things on their menu. Everything we got, for the most part, was stuff I wouldn't ordinarily select, but this was altogether one of the best meals I have ever had. We started with the bread and butter which was made with a Japanese milk toast and man, just when you think bread and butter can't get better. We also got the crudite--thr produce was outstanding and so was the house-made green goddess dressing. For small plates, we got the black bean chicken, the duck noodles, the nam tok, and a bacon dish that I can't remember the name of. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but if you made me, I think it'd be the black bean chicken. Our big plate was the slow steak and it was so juicy and delicious! I also had the Snail Mail and Toa's Tatanka cocktails and they were stellar, particularly the Snail Mail (plus, they donate a buck to the USPS when you get one!). To top it all off, we got the ice cream sando and it was perfect in every way, particularly the pecans. The ambiance as amazing on the patio and the waitstaff was phenomenal--it was super cool being able to talk to the person who made our food and sourced the produce! Is Houndstooth pricey? Yes. From the appetizers to the cocktails you can definitely taste and SEE that everything is made with "love." This place is one of my new local favorites! I happened to stumble upon this place during its soft open just after a car accident where I totaled my car! After the hairy 2 hour long process which follows a car accident, I was ready for some relaxation and decompress time. The environment was so friendly, so clean, it ran like a well oiled machine, management and staff were above and beyond in explaining menu items or having recommendations. One of the bar managers got my story and brought it to the managers attention who was very kind. The food was amazing! The tabouleh and the crunchy potatoes!! Wow! Can't say enough good things about this restaurant! What a breath of fresh air in the downtown Benton Harbor arts district! My wife and I went on a Thursday and it was busy but the service was spectacular. Our waiter took time to explain everything in detail. The cocktails are incredible: handcrafted and delicious. As for the food menu, there are a ton of small plates that each have unique flavors. We ended up with the Vietnamese wings, buffalo cauliflower, panzanella, and tuna. All of which were spectacular. First time visiting Houndstooth. What an amazing addition not only to Benton Harbor, but to the region overall. From the minute we walked in the door we were amazed by the hospitality. I would recommend a reservation through their website as we got very lucky just walking in. We enjoyed the craft cocktail list and loved that they had mocktails on the menu as well. We shared three small plates and it was enough too satisfy our hunger. Our favorite was the black bean chicken. We sat at the bar which is in front of the open kitchen, and chatted with the chef/ owner. He shared the history of the building and a little about their changing menu. We will be back. Wow! Every dish had a unique flavor and was excellent. The BBQ carrots with creme fresh, dill and chick peas were an excellent start. The Mortadella pasta with brown butter, figs and pistachios was unbelievable. The Haystack and steak for the main course were equally wonderful. And for dessert a cheese cake with part goat milk topped with a tart, spicy cherry and jalapeño sauce. Very unique flavors start to finish. One of the best meals we have had in years. We had scheduled a last minute weekend getaway to St Joseph-- and this restaurant was the highlight of the trip. Our hotel was beach front and many of the restaurants around the beach area only offered fried bar food, pizza, burgers etc. We saw Houndstooth had great reviews and were enticed by the menu and pictures of food posted online. It's located off of the water and a little outside of the congested waterfront/vacationing area. We very much enjoyed that it was away from the crowds, especially with COVID right now and it also didn't feel touristy. The atmosphere inside was beautiful, modern and chic. We sat out on the back patio and enjoyed the charming ambience. Everything about this place was appealing-- small details but the music playlist was amazing and even the bathrooms were beautiful The FOOD though. Oh my goodness. It truly takes a mastermind to create the fascinating and exciting menu options they offer. We went to town on the small plates. The scallops were phenomenal and I don't even like scallops. They were HUGE, not skimpy at all. The sunflower burrata was delicious but it went beyond just being "good" I had nostalgia of eating sunflower seeds at the ballpark growing up while eating one of the most delicious and creative dishes. The homemade bread and butter was also fantastic. We proceeded to order the steak and 2 desserts. The owner was awesome-- she delivered a few of our courses and explain what each dish was and shared how it was prepared. The cocktails were beautiful, intricate and tasty. I can't rant and rave about this place enough. Every detail about this place is thought out and cultivates a truly delightful dining experience. The entire staff was very charming and welcoming as well. Tried Houndstooth recently, a few weeks after they opened. The food and atmosphere were both excellent, and better than any of the other higher-end or contemporary options in the area at the moment. On the food side, my partner and I shared 5 dishes total. The bbq carrots were a surprising standout (we will order these every time we're here if they stay on the menu), though everything was well-conceived and thoughtfully prepared. I'm not sure about value-for-price on the fish entree we had, but it was delicious nonetheless. The only dish I was un-amazed by was the XO shrimp dish (too subtle, a little plasticky imo), but partner enjoyed it. Being able to see dishes being fired in the open front kitchen enhances the food experience, too. And cocktails and wine selection were great. Atmosphere and design feel perfect for the food, with unusual attention to detail throughout. Tableware is interesting and on-point for the concept, but we found some of the serving dishes on the small side, which hid what could have otherwise been really beautiful food and actually made it a little hard to eat (having to dig down to the bottom to find sauce). The staff seemed very well trained, confident, and oriented to detail. However, we felt less than totally welcome when we arrived without a dinner reservation (on a weeknight, before 6:00, in October) and were promptly seated at the bar, even though 2/3 of the tables were empty. When we left after 7:00, there were still 4 or 5 open tables. And while I really appreciate that the food is a notch (or three) above other local options, one of the really great things about living in this area is being able to go out in the off-season without needing to make firm plans in advance. read more

Houndstooth Prefix Menu on New Years Eve wasn't only spectacular but the special attention and delivery of each amazing dish by the owner made for a very special celebration. The Caviar Latke with creme fraiche was a visual and delightful starter. Our #1 favorite was the Sturgeon Yakitori and after 5 courses, we managed to delight in the MIDNIGHT peruvian cocoa, passionfruit, ash meringue! Truly gifted chef's in the (highly visible) kitchen added to the celebratory evening. Did I mention the wonderful wine pairing? WOW), the Vietnamese Wings (too strong on fish sauce for me both other diners LOVED them), BBQ Carrots (carrots - really?! - excellent), crunchy potatoes (excellent starch), Roasted Chicken (very good, SUPER Moist), Slow Steak (Excellent - must be ok with medium rare), Bird Food Budino (WOW) and the ice cream sandwich (very good). Every dish allowed you to taste all the flavors used in the preparation. Each item, except for desserts, arrived by itself, designed to share with your companions. Service was impeccable! Each dish arrived, was fully described, and was handsomely presented. Crowd is hip, trendy - to be expected on 3rd day of operations. Not a single hiccup despite being new. Pricing is not for the faint of heart - but given the preparation of each dish, the nuances and planning, it was in line with what you would expect. You come for an upscale, gourmet experience and that is exactly what you get. Only downfall - not for the non-sharing crowd...this food is meant to be shared, as is the experience, and those who live by the adage of "I ordered it, so it is mine" will not be able to relish all the flavors of this restaurant.
