Absolutely amazing!! We went as guests to celebrate a friend's birthday 2 weeks ago and from the moment we walked in, the aromas were flavorful and enticing. The taste did not disappoint. Each bite was as if my tastebuds were doing a little dance. I've lived in Chicago and NYC and this restaurant makes me feel "at home" again. The staff is not only attentive, but works together like a well oiled machine. Houndstooth is a great little place to enjoy dinner and cocktails. They have an eclectic menu with unique dishes. We always order the BBQ carrots with orange segments and cumin cream and the sunflowers & burrata. The duck wings are delicious as well. Last time we visited, we tried the milk-braised pork paccheri and slow steak served with a charred cabbage wedge. Both were very flavorful and the steak was cooked to perfection. Try the Out of Focus cocktail with your meal. We usually ask for Bjorn. He is a great server and is very knowledgeable when it comes to explaining the dishes. read more

Everything our party of six ordered was superb. No shortage of flavor from any of the dishes. If you're sensitive to spicy/hot foods you might want to ask before you order certain dishes. Highlights were the bbq carrots, black bean chicken, and both the slow beef and the pork katsu main dishes. As far as service, we went on a slower night so we had no problem with the wait for our food or drinks. Our server was very nice. The drinks did not come out all together but it only took 10 minutes for everyone to get theirs. The interior atmosphere was cozy and modern. I can't tell you how much I loved each item I chose on the menu. New restaurants get a lot of hype...it's new...exciting...then the excitement can wear off. I would be shocked if this place doesn't have all the hype three years from now. Damn! This is good food! Hot damn! This place just took over my go-to for a fancy dinner, when we used to roll all the way to Fennville for Salt of the Earth. Salt of the Earth is good...real good...but Houndstooth is better. Each dish was an explosion of flavor and boy oh boy did those flavors blend excellently together! But wait! There's more! It wasn't just the flavor, it was the texture of each dish. There was so much to each item we shared. My wife and I tried a bunch of things and I can't remember each one. By far the weirdest was the on with the Japanese doughnut and chicken thigh that had this shaved something or the other that actually moves on the plate due to the heat. They'd kill me for how bad I'm selling it right now. "Did you say something was moving on top of your food?" Yes! And it tastes good too! Isn't that everything you wanted, Ms. Hunter-Gatherer? Now you can actually go to dinner and feel like you legit just hunted the moving food and eat it on the spot. You're a bad ass! And all you did was sit on your ass! (I'll try to post the video of the moving food) We love love loved the Paccheri which is this noodle dish with a braised pork terragon cream sauce thing that I could drink straight from the pan...they don't allow this by the way...such a good dish. We shared it the first time then each got one the second time. The cocktails were great too. My wife tried a couple mocktails and she loved both. I finally tried a cocktail and loved it too. Cody was our server round 2 and he was great, picking out the cocktail I fumbled around trying to explain how I might like it. He picked the perfect one. On our first time we got the bartender as our waitress and she was a magician. We would have eaten anything she told us about. And I wanted to drink every bottle she pulled off the shelf. The interior is gorgeous. I was loving the tables, behind the bar, the kitchen set up, and even the bathrooms are better than any bathroom you're gonna see at a restaurant. Cheyenne.....she brings you this food and tells you what it is and you're just eating it in your mind and you get those emoji heart eyes and drooling...it's all very rude on your part, but Cheyenne is so nice and acts like your not drooling. The food Cheyenne and her brother James have created..you can tell their creations are a labor of love and passion. My siblings and I sat at home making nachos and melted cheese. I'll tell you this...if Cheyenne & James made some nachos and cheese at Houndstooth, I'd be calling that order in every night. Great staff! Everyone was incredibly friendly and smiled a lot in a very good way. "We like that you're here" and "we like that we're here" way, which is what I love to see. Thanks guys! My husband and I paid Houndstooth a visit last night and it did not disappoint. We had a reservation but were seated a bit late. Once seated we ordered the crunch potato appetizer and XO prawns. Potatoes were delicious, and the prawn appetizer was very good albeit the price of them was $16. We also had the lamb ribs and slow steak. I loved the ribs but the slow steak stole the show. The server explained it was a hanger steak baked and then deep fried (insert jaw drop) which gives it an amazing texture on the outside and stays nice and tender on the inside. The steak, atop chimichurri, was served with crunchy potatoes. The lamb ribs were served with a couscous and mint salad. Stop by houndstooth and order a Dr. Sheffield cocktail and eat some amazing food at this unexpected treasure. read more

I haven't written a review for awhile but Houndstooth is definitely review worthy. Our server Cody was excellent,very informative, great suggestions. I started with a Vodka drink called Whoopsy Daisy it was excellent. My wife had Sowers Summit which she also loved. We decided to try a couple of appetizers starting with BBQ Carrots that were by far the best carrots I've ever tasted next were Blue Crab Dumplings with a sweet sour sauce also excellent next Greek Wings with a Feta sauce that were To Die For! Next we decided to split the Slow Steak also excellent with homemade potatoes also delicious. Last but not least Creamsicle Poke Cake.....Fabulous!!! All in all one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Excellent service excellent food I would recommend to everyone read more

We had no idea about any soft opening. So on our way to The Hawks Nest for trivia we see a bustling store front all lit up. Houndstooth is upon our humble home town of Benton Harbor. I'm a bit of a cynic and I have been apprehensive of this dining establishment since I heard of it nearly a year ago, I stand here proudly saying my apprehension was met with a certain sexiness and energy that you simply cannot ignore as you step through the front door. A quick note on the building renovators and owners. They do amazing work, and are really making strong, long and tactful strides toward bringing Benton Harbor's love and vibrance back into fashion. I respect them for their efforts and you cannot argue with kick ass and that's exactly what they've been & continue to be doing. As we walk up the Mayor & his wife are in the window. A nice touch to see civic leaders enjoying the up and coming on opening night. The hostess was strait foreword and gracious and escorted us to our seats at the bar. Our dear friend met us for drinks and snacks, which ended up being a meal. OMG... this place just drips of cool. Now I'm not going to try and sell you the sexiness of post contemporary / industrial decor. We have all been exposed to plenty, especially in SWMI with all the breweries that have hit the scene in the last few years. There is enough grit, sturdiness and stylish elements to really make this restaurant stand out from the rest. So I'm kind of smug when I look over a drink menu. I look for good booze to get the meal going, maybe a cocktail, possibly a beer. I usually hold wine for the main event. I want to be challenged, at the same time I have little patience for gussied up BS. I like my booze to taste like booze. Pleasantly surprised I find an intriguing selection of spirits that I was unfamiliar with and I was tickled with my mezcal. My wife's dirty gin martini filled her tooth and led to a delicious IPA from our friends at The Livery. "We'll have that tabouli and those crispy potatoes, please." Now I'm not thrilled about grapes or figs (or dates or something) in the tabouli but I'm all intrigue and willing to fill that chip on my shoulder with what ever the chefs have to offer. Absolutely dynamite dish. I don't like to be bombarded by cumin. Dinner is not in the eighties on a hard shell taco. Though the first sensation to my taste buds may have been cumin each bite was absolutely balanced. It was a really nice touch that the dish was delivered by Chef Cheyenne with a little anecdote about the dish's family origins. You all broke my mold of what I believed I want out of tabouli. Look god bless it, I challenge the person that tries to get me to pay $7 for 6oz of potatoes and like it. But I was eating them with a fork and knife like I was enjoying radish & goat butter at Rootstock or diver scallops at Blackbird. Mother Hubbard, they were good and once again Chef Cheyenne was there with just enough direction as to how to get the most out of our dish. Sorry, brief intermission to talk about the dishes, flatware, & glass. KUDOS. As the building and space seem to have a certain sturdy timelessness to it, as do the plates, forks and great choice of glassware. Everything has this low style hearty girth about it. While at the same time a bit of elegance. Solid and strong to the touch like stone, yet soft & smooth during use. I look around the room for people I need to say hello to on the way out. Planning our exit strategy along with our next course and it's accompanying beverage. Tuna or tar tar, tuna it is. So I've been craving some poke' or kalbi ribs. A little island food lightens the heart and refreshes the soul. Though not titled as poke' these delicate cubes of big eye tuna laid in a bed of miso hummus and nori chips really fit the bill. My draft brut Virtue cider was a perfect match. We are nearly out of time. Slow steak or lamb ribs??? I don't know what either one of those things are. My wife chose the lamb & I chose an old vine zin to go with it. An inquiry about some vermouths or aperitifs filled this very small void in our meal. We tasted French and Italian fortified wines. Each sort of tasting of good sherry, but with that old world character that has both subtlety and refinement. I love to learn and thank you for the lesson. Wine arrives just before the lamb ribs do. These are ferociously rubbed with hearty herbs (including coriander seeds, which I absolutely love) then slowly cooked (what seems like dry roasted giving the herb crust a nice mouthfeel and the meat was so juicy & flavorful). Chef James stopped by mid meal to have a chat. Explaining why his background in French cuisine changed his expectations in what and how he likes to prepare food. I love Israeli couscous & that it was served chilled. I loved that all the potent herbs we had throughout the meal did not linger on our palates. This really is a gem in Benton Harbor and they continually tweak the menu to provide the best food experience in the area. You really do need to understand how to eat at Houndstooth and see expectations - the staff absolutely takes care of you and guides through the menu. In my opinion plates are a little small, especially the big plates, but every single item will be surprising and delicious. Wow! Just wow! I took a chance on Houndstooth as I had a free Friday night for dinner and hadn't had the opportunity to try it yet. It was fantastic! Service was friendly and prompt, I was able to walk in and sit at the bar without a reservation even though it was quite busy. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable recommended two delicious cocktails that I wouldn't have thought to order myself. The food was top notch with probably one of the best steaks I've had in quite some time. I ended the night with a dessert that didn't disappoint either. Nestled in the reburgeoning downtown of Benton Harbor is Houndstooth, the fresh restaurant that is drawing rave reviews from foodies near and far. I was near, so I decided to check it out along with my wife. I found the whole experience a revelation in contrasts. The upscale cuisine is juxtaposed by a simple modest venue. Mammoth flavors were contrasted by a limited menu. Even within each dish, we found the yin and yang of textures, the balance of flavors, and a stellar presentation to match. We began with Wagyu Tartare to share. Wagyu is a superb Japanese beef known for its silky texture. Cured egg yolk helps hold the patty together, and fine shoestring potatoes add the contrasting crunch to the velvet texture of the beef. One of the owners told me that this dish is in homage to Anthony Bourdain who loved Wagyu, but they just put our own little twist on it. Sharing is encouraged, so we shared some BBQ Carrots, just because it sounded weird. The carrots are charred and fully cooked, yet still firm. Earthy tones of carrot and cumin in the creme, contrast with bright, crisp palate splashes from orange, red onion and microgreens. I cook a lot of pork, but usually grilled or smoked; so I was intrigued by a pasta dish featuring milk-braised pork, mustard cream and delicate whispers of tarragon. Paccheri is a girthy tube-shaped pasta, and it was perfectly cooked. The creme sauce, pork and tarragon made a wonderful savory blend to dress the noodles, which were contrasted by the crunchy toasted bread crumb topping. The chef brought out his own concept dish which married Asian ingredients with a chicken and waffles theme. It's listed as Black Bean Chicken on the menu, but the chicken hides under a covering of Shishito peppers and little dumplings known as Chinese donuts, which play the waffle role. It tasted wonderful with only subtle nods to Japanese cuisine. We had Creamsicle Poke Cake for dessert with cloud cream and orange. Once again, the softness of the cake was countered with chocolate nibs and crunchy meringue piping. It was dreamy. Houndstooth has a full bar which is stocked with unique brands that are hand selected to create certain original cocktails, like the delicious Velvet Monkey. This gin-laced glass of goodness featured fino sherry, elderflower, winter citrus, and a smoky herb oil that floats on the surface. Not to tattle, but my wife had two. The menu is divided into four sections; Snacks start at $6, Share starts at $11, Big Plates start at $27 and Sweets are $8. Seating capacity is only 48 and the restaurant is often filled, so take advantage of their reservations feature on its website. When you go, ask about its unique name...Houndstooth. read more

Food and drinks were very good, but in every aspect except staff (great!) and wine (nice selection) I don't think quite good enough to justify prices. We had several small plates: Wings, pacheri, black bean chicken. Tasty, innovative, but we weren't overwhelmed, in part because of serving temps: we like hot foods served hot, not warm or room temp, and it was a little odd to have different elements of one dish at different temps. Ordered just one entree, branzino, and it came with no sides, not even a garnish. For $30+ I expect a little more. Branzino--Mediterranean sea bass--after all is hardly a high-end variety of fish. Noticed that we could order bread for $6. The ice cream sandwich we had for dessert was fine in concept but flavors didn't live up to expectations. Sandwich cakes a bit tasteless. Wine list is nice. Selections are more thoughtful than other upscale restaurants in the area but value still not as good as nearby bread+bar. I really want to like this place, but I can't see coming here regularly unless some of the above issues are addressed. Also: be forewarned that the place is quite loud. read more

Everything about this place is amazing. This is the kind of restaurant that I hate telling people about because I want it to be mine... ALL MINE!! I looked at housing in the area because I want easy access to this place - it's that good. Finding dining options in the area that offer a great menu with quality ingredients and excellent service has been challenging, and Houndstooth nails it. From the atmosphere to the execution of both the food and drinks, everything is five stars. I love to sit at the bar on Sundays for brunch and watch the chefs and mixologist do their thing.
