I got to try the famous Howlin' Rays in its full glory at the original location in Chinatown and I was not disappointed! I highly recommend this chain location and can vouch for the food and service!!! Is the hype warranted? an astounding YES! I looked into the secret menu and got to try the Mario Fries, Lou's Chicken Sandwich, Quarter Chicken Breast with all their sauces, and Banana Pudding! The staff was lovely and I met Matt, the manager. I was greeted with an excited and hyped staff. They were kind and welcoming. Food came pippin' hot and the first bite of the quarter chicken breast was everything- juicy, smoky, spicy, and filled with seasoning! I heard comparisons between this chain and others and finally understood the difference: the chicken is at the forefront along with different layers of flavor that are in the sandwich! Think of Dave's Hot Chicken but meatier , juicier, and much flavorful. Everything is elevated with subtle sophistication- the slaw, all the sauces, and breading. It seemed all curated individually for your meal. For comparison, it is like getting a pastry at your local bakery vs. at a patisserie in Paris, FR. It's the same dessert but one is much better, especially if you pay attention to the subtleties. If you want to taste Howling Ray's in one dish, this would be it! The other dishes were also delightful, the Lou's sandwich had waffles as the buns with powdered sugar and syrup on top; imagine smoky, savory, with fulfilling sweetness. The banana pudding was also wonderful; not to sweet but subtle flavors with high quality ingredients. The Mario's fries are the ultimate chicken loaded fries and would have you full and fulfilled. Everything was of great. You are paying for quality and you will not regret it, especially if you like flavors and spicy. There is a reason that there is a line even before this restaurant opens. Not only would I recommend this place, I recommend bringing a crew so you can share the experience together. I am now a fan and I will be back and will bringing others with me.
Wow, I've been here several times since they opened in 2017 and the food quality is still great. This is the best chicken sandwich i've ever had, it better be too because it's $15. I also ordered the leg quarter for $13, and a cup of ranch for $1. Total came out just shy of $32 for not a lot of food. Their business model is working well as they've raised prices and kept making money. Just feels weird paying this type of money for the cheapest protein (chicken). I'll come back again in the future but not anytime soon.
After years of driving by when in the neighborhood & either not finding parking or on a time crunch, I've driven away sad without trying this place. Finally I made it! Only about a 15min wait in line. Ordered w/Ryan who had such a great attitude & very welcoming. Ordered chicken sando (mild) fries, comeback & tang sauces. Food came out quickly. Chicken sando is big, great portion size of fries as well. Definitely can share. Normally I don't care for crinkle fries but they were fried & seasoned to perfection. Honorable mention to the staff behind the counter as well, every person I made eye contact with (although they were busy) returned a smile. I appreciate feeling welcomed. Great people & great food.
I finally got to visit this place after dropping friends off in Union Station. My original idea was to go to Amboy, but unfortunately for them they didn't open up in time. I decided Howlin Rays deserved my attention. There was already a line in place and they were playing some good music from the restaurant. When it came time for me to order, Ryan at the counter was very friendly to me. Everyone in the restaurant was. I really enjoyed that. I stuck with getting the mild sando, and didn't expect the chicken breast so gigantic! It was a delicious sandwich and the spice was pretty good. I'm glad I didn't go any spicier than that. I ordered the fries which were actually pretty good. They were definitely seasoned, but they weren't heavily in taste sense. They had something for me to drink and it went really well with a meal actually. I'm glad that I could say that I enjoyed this place from beginning to end. It is a little hidden, but luckily for me I found it. Definitely will come back to have my wife try it one day.
Winner Winner Chicken errr... Lunch So we are always skeptical if there is way too much hype surrounding a eatery. However in the case of Howlin Ray's the hype is justified. The staff were super friendly and on point The Food: (A word on heat. They have 6 levels from Country with none to Howlin. We can take a decent amount of heat. I went medium and my son went hot. The medium was just the right balance with a nice burn especially on the back end. The next level, hot, was also really good and hit close to our limit) The Sando: a nice sized chicken breast perfectly fried. The chicken was moist but well cooked and the batter was seasoned perfectly. The slaw added a nice crunch to things, the comeback sauce added richness and the pickles added a brinney crunch to offset the goodness. The bun put up a valiant effort but about of the way through it gave up and the Sando became a fork affair. The Slaw: It was just okay, on the sando it was perfect, on its own, just okay The Macaroni Salad: Glorious, simply glorious. Whatever spicing they were using with the fries seemed evident here giving it a reddish hue. The the bits of dill, onions, and pickles helped balance the whole thing perfectly. This would be right at home on a North Shore plate lunch. Shake Fries: Perfectly fired crinkle fries shaken in that spicing they use. Dipped in the comeback sauce or on their own they were awesome. Banana Pudding: OMG so good. With the traditional vanilla wafer on top. Rich and luscious it was a perfect end to the meal. The only downside? This location is small and if you want to eat there there are only a few tables. Parking also sucked. Those thinks aside excellent place
Finally got try this place after seeing it from my fav tiktoker! The line was long but speedy. The person who took my order was super personable and even threw in a free side sauce. I love how intentional they are with their customer service. It competes with chick fil a! The chicken sandwich itself was nice and juicy. However, I thought it was a pretty average chicken sandwich. Nothing really stood out in terms of flavor. But def something to try for your first time in LA!
I guess it's time for a review update after over 9 years later! I've been to all 3 locations and the quality, the service, the food; everything has stayed consistent after all these years. No matter what location you visit, it's all the same level of quality you'd expect from Howlin' Ray's. Anyway, rode from Anaheim to Howlin' Ray's because let's be real; they're totally worth the ride/drive and it had been awhile since I last had it. Believe it or not, I finally FINALLY tried their waffles after all these years. They were really good, but a bit too... eggy? The exterior was PERFECT, but the inside was a bit under cooked for my preference. I like under cooked, but maybe just 2 minutes longer and it would've been perfect. Obviously had to get a sando as well. Excellent like always, no surprises or complaints there! 'Til next time!
Bookmarked this spot for our LA trip. We found metered street parking about two blocks down. Made it right before a line formed. The employees here are freaking awesome. My son tried to order HOT and they made sure he was 100000 percent sure. We were told it's much spicer than other places hot level. They let him try a piece and man he changed his mind instantly. I'm talking ghost pepper and habanero all up in yo face. I even took a bite and couldn't handle it. Nose running and mouth watering for 10 minutes drooling like a damn dog in the summer. Glad I went mild for my meal and my kids went medium. One the menu: Quarter bird (breast & wing) mild 2 sandos medium 1 tender medium 1 shake fries Ranch and comeback sauce The quarter bird was so good. Flavorful and not too spicy. The chicken was fresh and crispy. I was surprised the breast was moist too. The comeback sauce is really good and pairs well it and the fries. The fries were perfectly seasoned krinkle cut. Enough for two people to share. Fries were hot and fresh and not oily either. The ranch is really good and you should definitely try that Tennessee tang. Not your basic ranch! The pickles are pretty good and I usually don't like pickles. The sandos were a nice size. Can't review the sandos since it was my kids order but they said it was bussin. There are some tables outside to eat or take it to go. Glad we got to try Howlin Rays!
Holy smokes this place has some of the best service I've ever gotten at ANY restaurant. All the staff are wonderful to be around, and they were all very patient in explaining what they recommended. I can tell the people who work here truly have a passion for the food they make!! Onto the food....its d*mn good. It's the best white-meat chicken sandwich I've had in my life. And I've had a lot of chicken sandwiches in my life. However BE WARNED their SPICE IS SPICY! Ask them for a taste test first before you order...or else the ghost peppers will haunt you and your food-exit-hole. There is parking in a paid lot underground, the entrance can be a bit tight. 10/10 would come here again.
Now this is hot... no really this is hot.. and flavorsome. Crispy breading, no sogginess here. Juicy chicken. No overpowering singular seasoning (cayenne) but a nice, FLAVORSOME balance of all seasonings. Fries are quite expensive for being fries BUT THEY ARE SO GOOD. Service here is above and beyond, the nicest people and most extroverted you will meet. Have a chit chat with them and find out! Cutest little plaza with all you can ask for... DELICIOUS FOOD!
A little late on the post, but we came here on Valentine's Day. We were actually in the area shopping for Chinese New Year decorations but we were wonderfully surprised by a huge balloon decoration for the special day. Nice to see an establishment that knows how to celebrate. Before I forget, shoutout to Ryan, that guy's a G. We expected a long wait, but it only took about 10 minutes when we arrived around 11:30 AM. The staff were efficient and friendly. Seating is limited, but turnover is quick, we grabbed a table while waiting for our food. Once the food arrived, nothing else really mattered. The chicken was incredibly well seasoned across the board. I prefer bone-in personally, and every piece was juicy and finger licking good. You could tell the process was dialed in: flavorful meat with breading that was seasoned just as well. It was good enough that I barely touched the sauce, and not from a lack of appreciation. My only slight gripe was the heat level. Based on some YouTube videos I'd seen, I expected more kick, but the medium had almost no heat for me. A small issue though that will be corrected with another visit... Perfect!
Howling rays still remains the GOAT of Nashville hot chicken! After being to both locations several times I think the go to is the quarter bird leg/thigh. Medium has a little kick but not overwhelming I definitely wouldn't go more than hot. The leg/thigh tends to be more tender than the breast imo, I'd suggest two of those rather than the half bird. Also don't sleep on the tenders, they are massive and surprisingly great too, and easier to eat/less messy. Wait at opening on a Saturday was about 20-30 mins till food was received. There's a few tables for sitting right outside the location but it's very casual. Will definitely been returning, it's worth the wait and has kept up its quality! The staff is always super friendly and personable!
I finally got to try Howlin' Ray's again. The place was busy, but that's pretty much what I expected. There was a line, and a lot of people were waiting for their food. I ordered the quarter bird with mild spice, fries, and banana pudding. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the mild spice level was perfect for me. It had a little kick without being too spicy. The fries were really good and seasoned well. I also enjoyed the banana pudding, which was a nice sweet treat after the meal. One thing that stood out to me was how friendly the employees were. Even though it was busy, they were welcoming and provided great customer service, which made the experience even better. Overall, I had a great experience. Between the delicious food and the friendly staff, I can see why so many people recommend this place. I'd definitely come back again when I'm craving hot chicken.

What I ordered: - "Hot" chicken sandwich and tenders - Shake fries with comeback sauce - Collard greens - Macaroni salad Chicken was fried excellently, blend of spices creates an explosive bite! I got "hot" for the spice level but definitely order "medium" first, then work up. For the sandwich, combination of acidic slaw and creamy comeback sauce elevates the sandwich tremendously. Although the chicken was great, it was a tad too salty this go around. Shake fries were crispy on the outside and soft inside, with the comeback sauce being the perfect compliment. The added creaminess with a hint of spice and tanginess keeps each bite flavorful. Collard greens were tender and juicy from the savory broth. I just wanted a few more pieces of pork. Macaroni salad was a refreshing change of pace from the hot chicken due to the cool creaminess and hint of dill. read more
Got the half chicken country style and it was well seasoned. A bit on the oily side, but it nevertheless tasty. Shake fries are a must. So good. Has a bit of a kick from the seasoning but that's what makes it great. They have some sauces that come with it. We had the honey mustard and the Tennessee sauce (I think that's what we got?), but the white sauce with dill is so good. Service is super upbeat and lively! All super friendly. Not a lot of seating outside. read more

I stopped by Howlin' Ray's Fried Chicken around 11 AM on a rainy Friday, thinking the weather might keep the line short. There were about six people ahead of me and it took roughly ten minutes to get inside -- not bad at all. Once I got in, the cashier was extremely friendly. He asked how my day was going, what I had planned, and even what brought me in. I told him I'd seen the place all over social media. He gave me some great recommendations and I ended up ordering the chicken sandwich (medium heat), fries, comeback sauce, and their ranch (can't remember the exact name, but it was solid). It honestly took longer to wait for the food than to get inside, but it was definitely fresh. Super moist chicken, perfect spice level, and the fries were really good. When my order was called, the guy who handed me my bag was just as friendly and double-checked everything. Once he saw my name was Kevin, he mentioned there were four Kevins working that day -- and all the kitchen staff who heard it said hi to me, which was hilarious and made the experience even better. He also told me to let him know if I needed anything. I grabbed a seat right out front (got lucky -- there's no indoor seating and the line gets long fast). By the time I left, the line was about 25 people deep. Parking is rough in the area, but that's expected around Chinatown. Also, shoutout to their sweet iced tea in the can -- really good. Overall, I totally see why people rave about this spot. Super friendly staff, delicious chicken, and worth the wait. 9.2/10 -- highly recommend. read more

My boyfriend was wondering how spicy the "hot" level is since it was our first time, they gave him sample and omg don't underestimate the ghost pepper... he decided to get it His take on the hot sando "seasoned well, juicy, spicy, bread was alright, coleslaw was okay, sauce was good, pickles were good, fries were good, potato salad that was not good" I got chicken and waffles, medium spice and tenders instead of wings. I felt like it was a little spicy but then it jumps to hot level... there should be an in-between and medium doesn't really give that. But the waffles were fluffy and yummy, biggg juicy tenders! Went on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Food was AMAZING!!!! We didn't have to wait too long, maybe 15-20 minutes max. We got 4 sandos, one mild 3 hot, fries, and the employee helping us also threw in free waffles. So awesome! So super delish! The only downside I would say is there's little to no seating. It's like hunger games - wait until someone is done with their seating, stand near by, snag the seat before someone else does. read more

Wow! Divine. Literally the best I've had for hot chicken. The fries were my favorite. If you get the shaken fries make sure to eat it right away. It wasn't as good when I brought it home. The Sando was really good and thick piece of chicken. The slaw paired well with the sando, it had like a vinegar taste to cut the spice. I liked it. Pickles were good! Mac salad was good. 9/10 Potato salad. 8/10 Fries. 10/10 Sando. 8.5/10 Sauce: 10/10! Flavorful! Similar to canes sauce but way better and creamy! They were also so nice they have us side of pickles and two water bottles! Next time I want to try the Mario fries Closes at a certain time, but I saw people kept coming after closing time. read more

What more can be said about this already well established premier Hot Chicken spot? Come here on the weekdays, you should be good with no wait time to order. However, come here on the weekends and you'll be waiting around 30 minutes to order. Yes, it's THAT good. I've been to this location twice now, first time I went with 1 medium chicken sando and 1 hot chicken sando. Let me tell you. Be warned, the hot spice level here is no joke. It's a gradual climb that lingers for almost 20 minutes. Nonetheless, the taste is incredible. The crunch, the depth. The fries. All second to none. Second time, I went with the secret menu item, the "Mario Fries," which is basically just loaded fries. But again, the flavor cannot be understated. Even their signature comeback sauce and Tennessee Tang (almost like a Tzatziki ranch) are addictive. The staff and service are insane here. This is the only establishment that I've noticed goes out of their way to get to know you when you pick up your order. All very welcoming, and all very accommodating. This is the go-to chicken sandwich spot in Los Angeles. read more

Bustling hot chicken spot with customizable spice levels. My sister loves this place and so we came here for her birthday after hiking. There is another location in Chinatown as well but this one has more space to sit (both indoor and heated outdoor). You have to order first before being seated. I got the medium-spice "Sando" sandwich and I think that was enough, though if you're feeling up for the challenge, you can go all the way to howling. My dad ordered the "hot" Sando 2.0 and he was sweating up a storm already (though he enjoyed it). Personally, I liked the Sando over the Sando 2.0, but they're both good options. Everyone working there was nice and chatty. We ordered fries with an extra comeback sauce (50 cents per sauce) and we liked how crispy they were. There's a private parking lot as well as street parking. Credit cards accepted and they do serve alcohol. read more

Beware the Hot is actually super spicy unlike many other nashville chicken spots so just take your chances with medium or mild which was still super yummy for when we had to get a round two. 10/10 spot would definitely go again! read more

This is one of the best Nashville-style chicken spots I've been to! The chicken was incredibly flavorful and tender. I ordered the medium spice level, which had a nice, gradual heat build-up, while my family enjoyed the hot for an extra kick. We also tried the mac salad, which complemented the chicken perfectly and helped cool the palate. To top it off, we had the banana pudding--it was absolutely incredible! It wasn't too sweet and had a delicious homemade taste. The staff was exceptionally welcoming, especially since it was our first visit. They even provided a spice level sample to ensure we knew what to expect, which was much appreciated! I highly recommend this place for anyone craving delicious, spicy chicken. I finally had the opportunity to try Howlin Ray's. The wait always deterred me but I was in the area on a weekday and was able to hop in line about 10 min after they opened at 11 AM. The wait was about 25 min by the time I got my food, so not bad at all. I recommend getting here BEFORE they open or just right when they open for the shortest waits. I ordered The Sando for $14. This is strictly a to-go spot with no inside seating. There are a few communal tables directly outside the restaurant. Customer service is friendly as the employees try to strike up conversations with customers. Why the 3-stars? After trying many, many Nashville friend chicken sandwiches, I really expected Howlin Ray's to be the best chicken sandwich ever (as many people claim it is). It did not reach those heights for me. In fact, I thought it was a bit over-hyped and not all that different from some other friend chicken sandwiches I've had in the Bay and SoCal. Given the influx of friend chicken sandwiches in recent years, I thought Howlin Rays was pretty comparable. Sorry, just my opinion. Street, metered parking only in Chinatown. They currently are not offering online ordering. Only delivery via Postmates according to their website. read more

How do we give this place 100 stars!? Believe the hype- the Chicken Sando was a masterpiece. The peppered and seasoned fries were fantastic. The macaroni salad had the freshest taste. The customer service was incomparable to any place I've ever visited! I met everyone there and they introduced themselves by name like we had just become best friends. Kudos to Ryan who hooked it up with banana pudding! The best I've ever tasted! Definitely worth the hour wait! Will be back again! read more

No line to order at 4:40pm on a Thursday afternoon. About the 4th ones in que. Waited about 5-10minutes. The service was incredibly friendly, and the food didn't disappoint. The spiciness level definitely packs a punch. The coleslaw in the sandwich was decent, but nothing special. However, the fries were the standout for me--they were definitely my favorite part of the meal. It's take out style, but they have benches and picnic tables outside of the shop where you can eat. They also provide wet hand wipes and bathroom tokens. read more

3:48 pm Sunday Took about 45 min to order and receive my food. Half bird, chicken Sando, chicken and waffles, shake fries, and banana pudding. Service is always top tier. They're not just taking your order they're invested in welcoming each customer and bringing good energy. Excellent execution on frying food to keep everything non oily, light batter but so crisp. Nothing dense or heavy except that banana pudding just like she should be. Once again bc Sunday, chicken and waffles here are my favorite. Pretty much ruined every other chicken waffle place with their frail and soggy or dry bland versions. If I gotta put butter and syrup on your waffle to make it taste good, that ain't it. Ray's waffles stay fluffy AND crispy with some kinda magical cinnamon? Flavor. Butter and syrup are just an added bonus. It's been a minute since I've been able to get here but it DID. NOT. On Sunday, I picked-up lunch from Howlin' Ray's in Chinatown for the first time. I had a great in-store experience. I mentioned to the cashier that it was my first time there, and they readily provided recommendations and offered a drink on the house - the Classic Lemonade. The cashier and staff at the pick-up counter were so friendly; they asked each customer for their name, how they were doing, and what they were doing in the area. Honestly, the staff's positivity and customer service left such good impressions on top of the yummy food that I ordered. Since I went on Sunday at around noon, the shop was already busy for the lunch rush, but the ordering queue moved quickly. After placing my order, I waited about 15 minutes to get it. My family and I shared a couple of items, including the Half Bird at medium heat and The Sando at mild heat. The chicken from both items were flavorful, crispy, and not dry. I'm now a fan of the rub from the medium heat! Also, if you like chipotle aioli or chipotle mayo, then you'll probably like their Comeback Sauce; it was tasty on The Sando. The Classic Lemonade was tart, fizzy, and a little too sweet for my tastes, but it did pair well with the chicken. I'd definitely visit Howlin' Ray's again! read more

Bun was buttery and soft. Coleslaw went well with the heat and juicy pickles. The chicken was fried well and very juicy and pairs well with the sauce. A step above Dave's hot chicken (5 stars) but not the best Nashville chicken I've had. The fries were good but I think there's better textures and shapes of fries that go with the seasoning. Don't think HR needs any validation for their chicken. It's juicy, crispy, and delicious. What is really worth mentioning is their exceptional customer service. Their staff goes out of their way to interact and converse with customers, and it is not just the person who takes the order. It is a casual eating experience, and very enjoyable. read more

Howlin Rays is phenomenal. I come from loving Dave's, but Howlin rays is really the next level. Food: We go the wings, tenders and waffles. Wings, amazing, crispy, flavorful spice. The chicken has this quality that you can just tell, compared to other low quality places. Tenders, also great, wings were better. Waffles, if you have never tried chicken and waffles, then get the waffles. Banana pudding, it was decent, 7/10. Just went to Howlin' Ray's in Chinatown and I had to come on here immediately because the service was THAT good. From the second we walked in, the entire staff was welcoming, organized, and genuinely kind -- you can feel the good energy in the space. But I especially have to shout out Charlie, who was such a standout. He was incredibly sweet, attentive, and just naturally warm. He consistently checked in on us (without ever being overbearing), made sure we were doing okay, and had the best attitude the whole time. It's rare to get service that feels both efficient and personal, but Charlie really made us feel taken care of. You can tell he actually cares about the experience people are having, and that makes such a difference. And of course -- the food speaks for itself. But amazing food + amazing people? I didn't take pictures of the sandwich or the food. However, it was amazing.. better than I thought I am not going to lie. I got the hot (ghost pepper) sandwich, and mild tenders with fries. It was so good. However beware of hot! So glad the cashier and the person who handed me the food warned us about not getting both hot. The guy who handed me the food though was a gentle giant and told me to let him know if it was to hot..I let him know it was indeed hot and I wish I went lighter on it but he handed me this free pudding and this pudding was fire too!! We can all the way from Sacramento so 6.5 hours to get here and we will be coming back!! Thank you guys for the great food and service read more
Always hear good things about this place so I tried it and MAN it is AMAZING! This place seems to always be busy; came here twice and the wait was quite long. Waited 1 hr the first day and around 30 the second. TLDR: Great food. GREAT service. Long wait but worth it. It came with very yummy pickles and was one of the best wings I have had ever. I still dream about it. I do recommend the dark meat over white; it is less common and makes the chicken so much more juicy. Mario Fries (5/5): This is on the secret menu and I found out through Yelp. I think the flavor combination is so crazy. Fries, cabbage, chicken, sauce, pickles, cheese? When it first entered my mouth, I almost cried (maybe because I was really hungry). It was very filling though and I only could finish half of it. Would order this many times over. Potato Salad (4/5): I love me some potato salad. I don't think its anything too special but I love potato so it just tasted good. Average yummyness. Lemonade (2/5): Not how I like it. It came in a can and it was extremely concentrated and sour. I added some sparkling water and it was much better though! AMBIANCE: (5/5) It was a kind of small store for how many people there were waiting outside but when you get in, the ambiance was top notch. Everything about it: they gave free stickers and postcards, they had both still and sparkling water for you, and the chairs were very comfy. SERVICE: (100/5): This is probably if not the best service I've gotten from any "fast food"-like chain. Chick-fil-a doesn't even compare. From the time you take your order to when you get your food, the service is very very kind and feels genuine. They check up on you often, help you with your needs, and occasionally even make small talk with you and compliment you. As a man originally from Kentucky I was pleasantly pleased to be greeted for my first time here by the most incredible staff who treat you well and take care of you!! Best fried chicken sandwiches in LA by a landslide in terms of raw flavor; but not in terms of crunch factor. Best dessert pairing as well with the banana dessert. TL;DR: Legendary chicken sandwiches that live up to the hype. Worth the wait if you're in the area. I've been hearing about this spot for years but always put it off because of the infamous wait times. Back when it first opened, people were waiting 2-3 hours. I recently went around 3 PM on a Saturday, and while the wait was still about 45 minutes to an hour, I can confidently say--it's worth it if you've got the time. --Interior This spot is just one of several shops in a large shared building. The "interior" is minimal--you're really just there to order and grab utensils or napkins. Outside, there are a couple of large tables, but most people end up in the courtyard shared with other shops. It's a functional setup, but nothing fancy. --Service The cashier was super friendly and happy to answer questions. We even had a nice chat about the Dodgers while placing our order. The staff here definitely adds to the experience. --Food We ordered the Original Sando, Sando 2.0, and the Mac Salad. -Original Sando: The star of the show. A massive chicken patty, juicy and bursting with flavor, paired with just sauce and pickles. It's simple but executed to perfection. I can easily see how this sandwich put them on the map. -Sando 2.0: A twist on the original with added bell peppers, honey mustard, bacon, and cheese. For me, it was a bit overcomplicated. The honey mustard in particular was overpowering, and I found myself missing the simplicity of the original. Sometimes less really is more. -Mac Salad: A solid side. The macaroni had a nice chew, and they gave a generous portion. Nothing extraordinary, but it complemented the meal well. Overall The Original Sando alone is enough to justify the wait. It's one of the better chicken sandwiches I've had, and I'd absolutely recommend trying it at least once. My review from over 2 years ago: One of my foodie friends has been urging me for the past year to try Howlin Ray's chicken, rating them above all their competitors, and especially because I'm in very close proximity. I was warned there would be a long line and to my surprise, there was definitely a line (which can also be a great sign). The staff for one are so dope in every way. The cashier and runner (Idr their names) helped make my first experience the best one, solving my indecisive issues, and even offering me chicken to try out the spice levels. I sat for about 20 mins maybe, or what felt like 20 mins, with my lips literally falling off LOL - with no water or anything to help - so take your chances as you please. The chicken sandwich, solo waffle, and classic lemonade are all so good. I'm saving the banana pudding for later. Only con is that sides aren't included, so their competitors are priced better. My review from 2025: Absolutely LOVE me some Howlin' Ray's! I recently lived walking distance to this location and would visit a lot. Hated when I craved it on a Monday or Tuesday [they're closed on those days]. I think the difference with their chicken sandwiches from others is the quality of the chicken. Then you add a waffle to it or some shake fries, mannnn. Even the canned lemonade is better than others' lemonades. The line is typically long, but it's so worth the wait. Now, let's get to the staff. I mean idk where you'll find a better team with energy like theirs. The energy is always high, they actually want to have a conversation with you outside of just your order, and they have corky random shoutouts and celebrations always happening. They have to practice this stuff because they are always on the same page lol. My most recent visit I have to give shoutouts to Elana, Brian and Nick. Elana was the only girl on the team that I saw [today] and we hit it off. Brian started a whole conversation with me outside of taking my order and we exchanged some great laughs. Nick was super supportive, cared about getting to know me [when I'm sure he had work to get back to] and cared about everyone's needs, if any, that was dining in or taking out.
