Looks like I'm in the minority here but this place is just "ok" in my book. The drinks were good. The blood mary is fantastic. The beer cocktail that includes St Germaine is a disappointment. None of the floral notes of the elderflower showed through and it ended up tasting like passion fruit kool-aide mixed with beer. Sad panda. The food was just...meh. The fries with cheese sauce were way less exciting than they should have been. Not enough salt? Or cheese? Or something? I don't know... just flat. I ordered the veggie chicken fried steak because my rule is to always support fun and interesting veggie options. Again... it was ok. No real complaints but nothing to right home about either. The breading was kind of soggy and the "steak" was kind of mushy. The gravy lacked flavor. Overall... it was a moderately flavorless pile of beige mush. Sad Panda, again. The atmosphere was pleasent. We had no trouble getting a table for 4 at 8pm on a Friday night. Parking was a breeze. I'll probably be back. read more

I've been thinking about this since I wrote this review earlier and have something to add-- a lot of people having lunch at this restaurant and places like it are in outside sales. We spend our mornings getting our asses kicked and being treated like lepers. The last thing we want when we finally get to break for lunch is to be treated the same-- like we are some kind of burden and that's exactly how your server treated me-- it is absolutely unacceptable in the service industry to be treated like that. If you are a server in a restaurant f'ing be nice! Just be nice! Don't kiss my ass, just a smile and simple ******* human decency is all I ask. I have a lot of choices for lunch each day and after over 20 years of being on my list, and really enjoying taking people to the out-of-the-way Hudson and feeling good about it, I'm done. Very disappointing-- I'll make a note of what this place is now and say good bye to it, just like I've had to for so much of what used to make Seattle, where I grew up, the place that I loved. P.s. This fun little restaurant is located in the Sodo. It's quaint, kept clean, service staff is very friendly and will definitely help answer any questions. I've been in for breakfast and lunch, all meals have been fantastic. If you time it right, you can sit down for a delicious breakfast and head over to Costco before the craziness begins LOL. Uhm wow!! What a wonderful little gem of a place ! Came in not knowing what to expect but was so pleasantly surprised. We came in around 12 and there was a wait but the weather was nice and they allow you to grab some free coffee while you wait. It's 21 and up so don't bring the kiddos. I got the Bloody Mary special which comes with a side glass of beer, actually a great pairing. My friend got the margarita and really enjoyed it. I tried the shrimp grits and wow- the flavor was sooo deep and well balanced. My friend had the chicken fried steak and they loved it! It was huge and came with a great portion of eggs. We were searching for a good place to have dinner after watching too much Food Network TV this afternoon. Our consensus was that we needed a great Chicken Fried Steak entree for the meal. After researching a number of possibilities online we decided to give Hudson a try, never having been there before. It proved to be an excellent choice. Hudson is located in an unpretentious spot in an industrial area, where you might not expect to find either the caliber of food or service that we experienced. Both were top notch! The Chicken Fried Steak was obviously not a frozen entree from a wholesale supplier, it was prepared fresh and served on a bed of smashed potatoes, covered with a rich white gravy (which had a nice but not over the top spice bite) and with a side of seasonal vegetables (in our case roasted asparagus). The breading on the steak was nice and crunchy and tasty too. All of the food was delicious, the service was great in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. I will definitely go back to try some of the other menu choices. read more

Rude and hostile service today. See below. Luv the menu and brought new friends today to introduce to the Hudson and now I absolutely regret it! I was meeting 2 friends there and told the hostess it'd be about 5 minutes. I offered to wait but she sat me at an open table right away which was great. When server, Jess(?), came by she asked if my friends were arriving soon because they dont usually seat folks till everyone arrives. I told her that the hostess sat me and didn't seem concerned since my friends were arriving in a few minutes. She got a bit hostile since I wasn't going to vacate and said she'd inform the hostess for next time. My friends walked in the door not even 5 minutes later. The food was fast and well attended. When we were finishing up, we paid the check and were slowly leaving, Jess asked if we needed anything else and proceeded to tell us theres a 30min wait. Mind you, after I said goodbye to my friends and went back inside to speak to the manager, there was zero wait. The staff said the manager, Mariam, had just left. That staff member didn't ask if I needed anything and dismissively proceeded to go on to something else. I luv the Hudson but have never been treated so rudely at a restaurant in my life. What a great little place to have brunch! We were lucky enough to get patio seating for brunch. I got the Hudson classic which I was super happy with. They didn't have sour dough but you get a choice of a biscuit, english muffin or white, rye and one more I don't remember. I appreciated the portion size of my meal, considering I had gone to a work out class right before. I was also super happy with the hashbrown's seasoning! Delightful! A little spicy but nothing too crazy. I was bummed out that the Hudson classic didn't come with a side of meat so I ordered bacon. Which, btw, was exactly the kind of bacon everyone likes. Thick cut slices that are just delicious! Two of my friends ordered Bloody Mary's and though I didn't have them myself, they raved about them and we're excited that it also came with a small beer. Apparently the owners are from Chicago and it's customary to do that. It was perfect for the nice 75* day. I recommend and I'll definitely be going back. read more

Went for Sunday brunch, arrived around noon and just missed the rush as most people were just finishing up. It was kind of loud at first but once it emptied out it was pleasant. Bloody Mary's were good and what a selection of drinks! Beware of the hash browns though, as they are spicy. The menu doesn't not mention this but I dug into mine and my mouth got a surprise! I looked at the bottom of my hash browns and there was a thick layer of cayenne pepper! If you like spice you'll like these. They were a bit much for me though. I've been here a few times now and really enjoy it. Small place situated around a horseshoe bar and has a cool dive bar feel. It's in an industrial area on E. Marginal about a block from Two Beers Brewing so you have to be looking for it or you may just drive right past. It's always busy on the weekends so be prepared for a wait unless you get there about 2pm. I got the Monte Cristo the first time I came and haven't been able to switch it up. It's so damn good and the hash browns are excellent as well! Bloody Mary's are served with a High Life beer back which is a nice touch. I have sat at the bar each time I've been and service has always been pretty good. I went here with a friend that is fairly new to the town. We were going to go to a different cafe shop. But ended up at Hudson. Lol. I wasn't all that bummed about it. I am the type of person who loves going to brunch and trying new places. And Hudson was perfect. The staffing was amazing. They were all so sweet and nice. They kept checking up on us and are very sweet about making sure we are doing great. The food at Hudson was AMAZING! the portion size is amazingly huge. My friend and I decided to get two things and share. Which was a great idea because we both got something different and got try different types of food there. A must try is the steak omelette. So good and so much flavor. Very filling. The biscuits and gravy was amazing too! If you're a coffee drinking, you have to try their ice coffee. It's so good! read more

We ran into a friend who suggested the diner a while back which was awesome! All I have to say is- The Huevos Rancheros were OFF THE CHAIN! Absolutely cooked to perfection. Our server told us that I was in luck, being that this dish is my ultimate favorite breakfast item, because the chef brought the recipe from his grandparents south of the boarder. Hands down my favorite breakfast I've ever had in Seattle. The service is great, the environment is busy with a small town vibe. This place is a delightful surprise! Located in a cool old brick building on the corner of Hudson and Marginal Way, this is a destination location - no homey neighborhood in sight! We sat at the U-shaped bar for brunch and had fantastic house-made bloody Mary's - they were light and had a perfectly balanced spice without the heat. Usually drinking a blood Mary is like a meal in a glass but their mix is so nice! For breakfast I had the special: ham, sausage & bacon scramble that was so delicious that I had to poke my boyfriend with a fork to keep him from eating my breakfast! I usually put salt on everything but this breakfast was perfectly seasoned and required nothing. My BF had the huevos rancheros and claimed it to be the best he'd ever had. Came here on a whim with a friend who wanted to meet between downtown and West Seattle. Not too far from either direction. Hung around for happy hour and found a seat quickly. We ordered the chicken skewers, brisket sliders, and a salmon caesar salad (not on happy hour). Food is decent, service is awesome and the atmosphere is too cool for school. Was kind of loud, but we had a nice corner table so it wasn't too hard to hear each other. The only other times I've been here was after the Kube haunted house. Fun times! read more

This place was pretty great. My friends wanted to grab some brunch and suggested Hudson's. It's a small establishment and there was a good-sized wait list, but overall, it wasn't too terrible. They offer bar seating as well as table and booth seating and we didn't have a preference, so we were seated at a booth. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits while others at the table ordered the Huevos Rancheros, Chicken Fried Steak, and French Toast. Luckily, I was able to get a bite of everything and it was all really tasty. The Chicken Fried Steak was crispy and juicy and well-seasoned. The French Toast was crunchy on the outside and it was fun to eat, though it was a bit dry on the inside. The Huevos Rancheros was satisfying and hearty; it had good flavor and the fried tortillas remained crunchy throughout our meal. My Shrimp and Grits were delicious. The grits were cheesy and the shrimp were seasoned and cooked perfectly. I asked for my eggs to be poached, which I popped over my grits, and it made for a great combo. The biscuit was flaky too and I had no problem finishing my entire dish. To wash it all down, I ordered the Manmosa (grapefuit juice, vodka, and a splash of bubbly), and boy, was it refreshing (and strong). The service was friendly but my only hesitation was the amount of time it took to get our food. The Manmosa kept me busy but if I had been starving, or hadn't been drinking, the 40 minute wait for food might have been difficult. read more

Industrial part of town with a few breweries and eateries opening up somewhat nearby. Breakfast is generous and pretty tasty. Had the pancakes with eggs and bacon to split with a friend and it was still pretty filling. Pancakes were fluffy inside and crisp on the outside, the bacon was cooked till crunchy (no floppy bacon here) and the eggs were scrambled (maybe a little on the overdone side for you running egg folks) Full bar with a bartender that is happy to accommodate when possible. I asked for cucumber in my drink and she came out with a full cucumber and asked if I wanted it muddled or sliced. Both times I was there it wasn't busy and service was good. read more

To establish context, I first came here after an productivity-intense and mixed day at work, on a gorgeous Thursday summer evening as the sun slowly set, to meet up with a couple friends for a low key happy hour thing. For taking the edge off a day like the one I'd had, Hudson delivered admirably. It was easy to locate--just take 99 out of the city and keep going until you see it on your left. Once you're there, you'll notice--even if you' hadn't read the other reviews that mention it--that it's located directly adjacent to the morgue, a point of interest if not a point of fascination. It's not an especially large place, but considering its location that I'd describe as "tucked away from the hustle bustle of already-remote Georgetown," I don't expect it'll be attracting teeming masses any time soon. It's more of a place to stop off, perhaps after a busy day at work. The large windows allowed the natural light to flood in, which was nice during the sunset hour. In general, I'm a fan of horseshoe-shaped bars (ever since Cheers was big on TV), in order that I needn't stare at a wall of liquor while enjoying libations and bar food. Not that there's anything wrong with a wall of liquor, but there's something about having my back to the rest of an entire room that I find less agreeable than having an open view across a room. At the very least, it makes for much easier people watching. Oh, it bears mentioning that the bar stools at Hudson are immensely superior those awful bordering-on-ass-torture devices they call barstools at Smarty Pants, which shares an owner with Hudson. The bartender on the evening I went was a gregarious fellow, who introduced himself and engaged me in a little chatter once my friends had departed. I like this. He struck the right balance of friendliness such that if I hadn't wanted to converse, he wouldn't have pressed on, but at the same time he was amenable to the sort of idle chatter that one often engages in with a bartender while rounding off the day. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name, except that it was a relatively common name like Chris or Matt or something. I suspect the Hudson staff is small enough, though, that if you go there more than once and sit at the bar, you'll encounter him. Anyway, though. The beer selection wasn't especially large, but still featured a couple brews with which I'd theretofore not been familiar. I love a large tap selection, but, as a bar or restaurant, if you can offer something I've not tried before, then I'm happy with your tap selection. The marketing copy claims Hudson's menu is "southern-inspired," whatever this means, exactly. I don't know about that, but I don't really care one way or the other. I ordered the veggie burger, and I have to say that it was quite satisfying and one of the better veggie burgers I recall having over the last several years, and I'm awarding an extra star for my impression thereof. That's as far as I've ventured into the menu, and being a pescetarian, I don't know how much further I'll be able to venture. I did find it curious that there was so little overlap with Smarty Pants. I guess the two places are spatially local enough that if you really want something like what Smarty Pants offers, you should just go to Smarty Pants, and as such, it's nice that Hudson offers its own distinct menu. If you like the no-nonsense vibe but are looking for a change of pace from another place whose name I've already mentioned too many times in this review, Hudson is likely worthy of your attention. read more

I used to be a REALLY BIG FAN of Smarty Pants; I went there practically every weekend for brunch with friends until the service started to slip (employee turnover issues) and the portions seemed to get smaller as the already somewhat inflated prices remained the same. Regardless, I had high hopes for the owner's new place Hudson. Last night I went there with my long-time SP dining companions and now I feel let down twice. The first thing that bummed us out was the fact that their outdoor seating area is so small and that drinks are not allowed out there. I have to assume that because of its placement and openness to the street outside that this area will never be zoned to allow for booze. That's unfortunate, since the windows for the building mostly face west and this place gets a LOT of sun, yet there are no curtains and the windows don't open - I really hope they have AC. As for the food, my vegetarian companion had hoped that (like SP) Hudson could substitute Field Roast on the BLAT, but unfortunately they don't actually have Field Roast, just veggie patties that they substitute on the burgers or for the chicken fried steak. Their menu is small, so there aren't a lot of substantial vegi-friendly options - she opted for the grilled cheese. I enjoyed the creamy, crusty mac & cheese and the accompanying side salad, though I don't understand why it's also served with a wedge of dry toasted bread (no butter?). The dish seemed a bit small for $9.75, so I'm going to hope that they use fancy cheese to justify the cost. Our other diner ordered the tuna salad and found it a smidge too sweet for his taste. I am really glad that they do offer fries as a side for their sandwiches - they looked pretty good. Our server was nice, though at one point I did run out of water for a while. I didn't order any adult beverages but my companions did, so I think the refills for our table slipped her mind for a few minutes. The décor is simple, but welcoming in a sunny way...The seats in the booths were slightly uncomfortable but they are on par with SP and the vibe is slightly preppier, but not entirely unfriendly. I've heard raves about their breakfast, so hopefully a trip back on a weekend morning will raise my opinion from the current state of "meh, it's okay." read more

And best of all, for those looking for an adult (but not 'adult') place to nurse that hangover and/or just sit and sip a bloody mary without feeling any tiny eyes spying on you, this is a 21 and over only joint. Hey, I have kids and there's times I wish I could go there with her, but overall, something about this place feels even better knowing it's a bunch of grown-ass adults eating HUGE plates of food (I did indeed get the chicken fried steak) and sipping a 'hair of the dog' drink most weekend mornings. This place is pretty darn sweet! Small with a biker/bad @ss feel and some of the best customer service I've had in a while. I ordered the Breakfast Tacos with a side of Ranchero sauce as recommended by our server and the BF ordered the Country Fried Steak with a Bloody Mary. The Breakfast Taco is a lovely mash up of scrambled eggs, seasoned sausage and chedda rolled in a crisp flour tortilla topped with sour cream and green onions. I smothered the tacos with the house made ranchero sauce. I paired each bite with their super crispy hash browns and savored every bite. So good!! The BF's Bloody Mary was served with a side of PBR. Aaaa-Maz-ING!!! The second best Bloody Mary to date! (Suggest drinking the Bloody Mary half down and pouring the PBR in to add a little fizz to your cocktail.) the chicken fried steak was massive in size and topped with white gravy. The chicken fried steak was crispy and fillMy only complaint is that I would have loved to have more gravy. The country biscuit was incredible....again more gravy would have made it that much better. This place has a phenomenal brunch, and I would give it 5 stars, but they charged me for coffee that I was under the assumption was free. Don't get me wrong, the coffee was great, but if I would have known I was paying for it, I would have gotten it and just gone straight to the Bloody Mary! The Bloody Mary was delicious as well! For the food, my friend had the delicious brisket omelet and I had potatoes with apples and sausage, yum! I LOVE getting breakfast here! And when I say 'love' I don't mean it like I love my sneakers or pandas or a good steak. I mean I love Hudson so much I want to make sweet love to this restaurant... after hours... when no one else is there because that would just be creepy otherwise. I've had a number of dishes here for breakfast and all of them have been amazing and spot on with what I was expecting them to be... albeit a bit more tasty. The staff here are pros. My coffee is delish and constantly being refilled, they're prompt on removing plates from the table and they're friendly and able to joke around even though it's obvious they are crazy busy serving tables. I've been here with a small group of 3 or 4 and I've been here with a group of 7 or 8 people. They're always able to accommodate us and provide the same service regardless. I'm cool with the prices for the food here since the food is spectacular and makes my taste buds smile and the staff are all pretty rad. The tables and general establishment are all clean and they do a great job of getting tables ready for their next guests. They get super busy on Sundays after about 11am so plan ahead or send scouts to reserve a spot for you. Also, you probably want to car pool since the parking sitch is a little weird... there's a lot of it around a fence but if you're lazy or prone to sudden naps after dining you may want to park close to the door... hence the car pool. Hudson really feels like it's a different Seattle. In a heavily industrial area, seemingly not near much else, Hudson is probably buzzing for brunch inside. I liked the vibe that probably hasn't changed in decades. Drinks are a good deal and I really appreciate being able to help yourself to coffee if you have to wait. Service was friendly and the whole thing is really affordable. But... I'm a southern boy and a vegetarian, so I was here for the vegetarian chicken fried steak. I was really excited because growing up chicken fried steak was my favorite comfort food, but since becoming a vegetarian it was just a fond memory. So my verdict: good but not perfect. The veggie patty itself was good. It's made in house and combo of beans and veggies, which was tasty but soft. I don't taste or consistency seemed to imitate chicken fried steak. Maybe imitation wasn't the point, but it was what I was fantasizing about. The gravy is also ok, but I think it's kind of bland. I think of country gravy being more peppery. So in conclusion, good as a southern style veggie patty, but not great as an imitation of chicken fried steak. read more
