Went to soft opening at new location off Shepherd. Place looks really nice and you go in first to the counter where you can order drinks and if you're ready, you can place your food order. If not, you can seat yourself and a server will be there. I had the vermicelli bowl with shaking chicken and spouse got a pork banh mi, as he always does. Both were delicious. He also likes the nice selection of beers. All employees were very friendly and helpful and the manager came by and visited a couple of times and he said there were 2 pickleball courts coming and they should have their liquor license soon. Solid casual place for a good Vietnamese meal. Highly recommend he shaking beef specialty plate. The sauce on the beef was extremely flavorful and savory. It was cooked perfectly with a tiny bit of pink and super tender. Also surprisingly really enjoyed the kale salad on the side, it has a nice fruity vinaigrette and some nuts, feta, and veggies. The grilled pork vermicelli bowl was okay, the pork had good flavor but was served in really big chunks so you had to do a lot of cutting yourself. The noodles were soft and there were nice fresh carrots and lettuce in there to lighten up the dish. Also love reverse happy hour on Fri/Sat after 8pm, beers are $4 and seltzers are $3! So this groovy little Viet-Style restaurant is so inner city perfect! Their food is exceptional with outstanding pricing, and I'll stop right here to say this: The Shaking Chicken Kale salad is the BEST salad in the City of Houston, no contest, period, end of story! If you don't get this your first trip to Hughie's - then foo-ie on you-ie! Seriously, I truly begin to crave that salad within weeks of my last visit. I think maybe they lace it with some addictive additive! Meh, its probably the mouth bursting flavor combo of sweet cranberries, nuts (walnuts & sliced almonds), red onion, grilled bell peppers, perfectly messaged kale in its light & perfect balsamic/fish oil dressing - topped with Goat Cheese! But wait, there is more! Hughie's is so especially cool because everyday they have a rotating beer board (really cool board I might add) with about 20-22 eclectic beer taps on hand at all times. AND, if high quality micro brews are your thing then also take advantage of the Wednesday Beer "Fire" Special which means at least 2 or 3 beers on the board are "on fire sale" to make room for the newbies. If a Wednesday is not possible, no worries, they still always have the aforementioned solid selections (local and afar - IPAs 2X's, WCIPAS, Hazy, Stouts, Wheat, you name it) at great prices, plus they do have frequent "bottle of wine" specials. I'm not much of a fan of some of the wines they carry, but hey if you feel inclined, try 'em out - wine is about the drinker, not the drinkee. About the Staff and People: I've been going to Hughie's for about 4 years now and I generally get there at least 6 times per year. The management and staff know who I am, always greet me warmly no matter how busy they are and they know that I want to sit and sip a beer at the bar while waiting for my take out. There is always a good vibe of local convo going on, and the patrons are super nice too - I guess they know what a gem Hughie's really is and want to be there to make sure it carries on for the 77008 and 77007. If you live in the Old First Ward, Woodland Heights or The Heights and you have not made it into Hughie's; then what a shame! read more

This place is so unassuming. They location, the look, the menu, almost everything about it was a surprise. It's in a random strip area next to a gelato shop and a gym. The name and outside look like it would be some random neighborhood sports bar. Inside it is open and clean with a nice outdoor seating area (fans included). Staff is friendly and the seating is simple with booths, 4 tops and a bar. They have rotating beers, and although not a massive selection on the board, it is a great mix and it seems like they take pride in keeping their pipes clean on the taps. Additionally, all the food I have tried is legit and surprisingly my you must try (or add) dish is their kale salad. Vietnamese eggrolls: Great flavor and not too greasy at all, surprisingly good leftover as well Vermicelli bowl: I feel like you can't really mess this up, but it was yum and peanutty goodness Spicy tofu: Cooked and seasoned well, but would not consider it spicy Spicy fried rice: Cooked perfect and loved the seasoning, I wish there were some more veggies in the rice and fresh scallions Shaking beef: Great seasoning and cooked perfect, only issue was the onions were caramelized so perfectly I kept eating that instead of the meat Fries: If I knew Vietnam had fries like this, I would have visited sooner! Been to the Main Street location probably a half dozen times over the past few years. The beer selection is pretty decent. The prices are maybe a bit too high for a draft beer, but not horrible. The food is honest mediocre. It's not bad, but it's not good. The food prices are similar to the beer in that they are on the higher side of appropriate, but certainly not ridiculous. The vibe of the restaurant is quite nice and the service is always good. Hughie's to me is perfect for when you want some less than average Vietnamese food along with a tasty draft beer. Nowhere else I'm aware of in Houston has the same situation. I'd give the food two stars, beer and service four stars. Average both to three stars. read more

Best fried rice I've ever had. I usually take out to go so can't speak to the service as much, but I have friends who say it is a really great happy hour and a solid dine in experience. Never would I ever had thought about getting this...ever. The server advised that I popped the egg and drag that goodness all over my meal, sounded amazing but tasted even better than words could describe. The coffee, doesn't matter what time it is...just get the pint and save yourself a weeks worth of Starbucks runs! I arrived shortly before 9PM and was delighted to find out they offer a reverse happy hour here which I took full advantage of sampling a few local beers. I haven't been to Hughie's in awhile, so I decided to go there for lunch today! I ordered a vermicelli bowl with lemon grass tofu and added a crispy vegetarian egg roll and a fried egg. This meal was so delicious, just like I remember from eating here quite awhile ago. Lemon grass tofu was served hot on top of my vermicelli bowl and the fried egg was perfect too - simple & delish! I can't believe i just now tried this spot! So so so good! They also have a great curbside pick up process during covid. You simply drive up and they bring it out and you can order online. I got the shaking beef with fried rice - it was amazing. The beef was so tender and I'm usually not a huge beef fan. At first I thought the kale salad was a bit of a odd thing to go with the rice and beef but boy was I wrong. It was fabulous! My boyfriend order the shaking beef fried rice and like a dummy decided to get it spicy. It was very very spicy and he was dying. If you can't tolerate spicy - don't do it. We also got the fried dumplings - they were good but I probably would have preferred them steamed. I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce but they were good plain or with soy sauce. read more

I've been a fan of Hughie's for a while now so when they opened up this 2nd location, I obviously had to go check it out. In comparison to the original spot, this location is larger with more tables and larger bar. I am, however, only accounting for the inside seating area since this location doesn't have an outdoor patio like the original spot does. The few times I've been here, it's never as crowded as the original location; especially at lunch. Parking, however, can still be a pain in the butt since this location is located inside a shopping center and thus, it has to share the parking lot with the rest of the businesses in the center. They offer almost similar menu with the original location with slight differences. They don't affect me, however, since my go-to order, grilled pork banh mi, is readily available on the menu. The same can be said with everything else that I usually order from Hughie's: Shaking Beef Fried Rice, Spring/Egg Rolls. If you're a beer drinker, plenty of selections on draft. If you don't know what you want, just ask your server and he/she can recommend something to you. Probably not going to frequent this spot as often as the original location since the original is much closer to me. However, wouldn't hesitate to come to this location either. read more

I forgot how much I liked Hughie's until I placed an Ubereats order and had it again after some time. I've been on a lemongrass tofu kick lately and have been craving it - I saw Hughie's had one so decided to try it out. OMG - their lemongrass tofu is delicious!! I love the dipping sauce that comes with the dish. Only caveat was that it came with a ton of onions and bell peppers - and they had a spicy kick to them. The portions were also tiny tiny - like it didn't fill the to-go container at all - with a scoop of rice. For the price, I felt like they were overcharging for some tofu. Though it didn't stop me from ordering it again the next day. That Vietnamese kale salad is also like crack - I loved everything in it and ordered a side of it as part of a meal since the tofu dish was so small. I did end up ordering the shaking tofu as well but preferred the lemongrass tofu and the flavors so much better. I remember loving the shaking beef here though. Maybe a portions are a bit bigger when you dine-in, at least from what I remembered from the other Hughie's location. read more

If you're into beer, they have an extensive selection from local breweries to the East and west coast. 5/5 on their shaking beef and garlic fried rice.
