Hunan Lion is a good Chinese restaurant. They are the best sit down Chinese restaurant in Columbus. The prices are not too bad for the quality of food. It is clean and the staff is very friendly. They have a good selection of spicy items. I ordered the Szechuan bean curd. It was about $9 for a big size of it which came with lots of tofu along with the vegetables. The tofu was cooked without being rubbery and it was and spicy. They also offer a selection of Chinese teas that are nice when it's cold. It was pretty fast service, and they are pretty attentive. The water was always filled but not too many times. I would order again from Hunan Lion. It's not as expensive as it looks from the inside. This is worth a return to. read more

An old favorite that we hadn't been to for 20 years since we moved from Columbus. Inside appearance was similar to what we remembered but not dated. Seating and service was prompt. We sat down and the first thing we noticed, when they brought out our waters and silverware, was there was a piece of food stuck in between the prongs of a fork. This restaurant has been a staple in NW Columbus and is still as nice as I remember. We enjoyed a big plate of 6 small shrimp spring rolls and hot mustard sauce, followed by Hunan Shrimp with broccoli as well as General Tso's chicken, both with steamed rice. Portions were generous, wait staff was attentive, and the patrons were polite and seemed pleased. We live close by and will be back soon. read more

The filling was plentiful, tender. and flavorful. I ordered Mongolian Beef spicy. My boyfriend ordered the red curry chicken, also spicy. The meat in both dishes was melt in your mouth tender. Called 2 days ago for the Peking Duck. The duck was pretty good because I know how much work they need to do to prepare for the duck. This was the 1st time I've ordered take-out, although I have dined-in at Hunan Lion many times. It wasn't that pleasant of an experience. Here's some advice for the owners: Don't argue and be condescending with your customer when you believe they have called the wrong Chinese restaurant to place their take-out order because you can't find it. And here's a pro-tip: How about YOU (Hunan Lion and Hunan House) don't use the same flippin' website AND the same flippin' menus for TWO different establishments, and not make it more obvious. Talk about poor marketing and branding. I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldn't realize the SAME MENUS AND WEBSITE are being utilized for two Chinese restaurants...(Huge Eye Roll). Wow, am I so so so glad I was invited to Hunan Lion, cause I'm afraid I would never have tried their food!! A group of 13? friends met for a Chinese New Year dinner and show of Hunan Lion's dragons. We had a reservation, thus two tables had been set aside for us. We had one waitress serving our group and she did a fantastic job. Everything from takin fast efficient orders, delivering hot dishes, and getting everyone's checks right. Kudos to her, she was on top of her game. Started with my go-to Crab Rangoon. Excellent!! The pastries were filled with a savory filling. Loved the red dipping sauce, too. I also ordered Moo Shu Pork. It was absolutely fantastic! Juicy dish, and the skinny strips of pork were cooked well - not too chewy, great flavor. The thinly shredded cabbage and egg added to the depth. I had plenty left over, and it heated up nicely for a second meal. After hearing friends complement the Sesame Chicken, I sampled a piece and couldn't resist and placed an ordered to-go, since it was so tasty! May I add that the flavorful quality of the dishes completely matched the prices. Our group met at Hunan Lion to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Starting at 7p, some of the employees dawned Chinese dragon costumes and danced throughout the tables. Traditional music and drums accompanied. It was neat to watch the dragons interacting with patrons, especially the smiles on children's faces, as they fed a dollar in the dragon's mouth for good luck. This is a hidden gem, people. I ordered carry out from Hunan Lion and my first impression was the clean and beautiful dining room that I observed from the payment area for pick up orders. Once home my generous entree was hot and packaged perfectly. I loved the Thai Mini Egg Rolls! The General Tso's Chicken was spiced perfectly, but the breading on the chicken was excessive. Visited Hunan Lion on a whim to celebrate Lunar New Year. The food was not bad by any means, but if you're looking for authentic Chinese try someplace else (there weren't even chopsticks on the table, we had to request them)! In terms of menu, I found it to be pricier and a bit more expansive than a casual takeout restaurant, but otherwise pretty similar. I've been going to his place for years and never had an issue. Tonight on New Year's Eve we got food and it was absolutely awful. Not only with my crab Rangoon were burnt but they forgot to give me sauce. The pork lo mein was awful and mush and had no flavor. It almost smell like trash. Decided to try Hunan Lion for the first time and it was pretty good. We tried the Sesame chicken and General Tso's chicken based of recommendations and we really liked the Sesame chicken! Lo mein was average, the general tso was good, but the Sesame chicken is crunchy and the sauce isn't overly sweet like some can be. The fried rice is pretty bland and the price for our order was crazy expensive, so for future orders we will be splitting meals because they are pricey but also big enough to split. Very fancy interior but the prices are reasonable! And my Orange Chicken was literally TO DIE FOR! Extra crispy and thin chicken in a sweet & spicy sauce with scallions and carrots. I have been a customer of Hunan Lion for over 30 years. I was even a waiter at this restaurant in the 80s. I no longer live in Columbus, but it was still my favorite place to go for Chinese food. I still come to Ohio a few times a year, and Hunan Lion was my favorite. Not so much any more. My last two visits have been less than impressive. The service is nowhere what it used to be. We used to pride ourselves in making guests feel welcome and really serving them, not only with speed and precision, but professionalism. We were taught to greet them, remove appetizer plates and soup bowls before serving entrees, then remove all the plates and check up on them before asking if they wanted the bill. I think that is a lost art. The formal attire is still on the servers, but the rudeness and feeling of "I'm in your way" is something I expect in Chinatown, but not in suburban Columbus where this is considered an "upscale Chinese restaurant". The waitress we had this time really made us feel uncomfortable because she was in such a hurry. She never said a word after we gave the order. When she delivered the entree, she held the serving plate over the table as if to say, "will you move that plate so I can put this down"? After we finished, she delivered the to-go boxes without helping us pack our leftovers and never even said thank you. Still, the food was a solid 4 to 5 stars, and that is what I would have given, but I was so upset with the service that I am going to be "shopping" for my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Columbus. Believe me, I am not being a "Karen". I am merely observing the decline of a great restaurant due to lack of attention to detail. The food can be great, but if the service is poor, the dining experience is reduced to mediocrity. Hubby and I decided to take his Mom here for Mothers Day. We have always enjoyed there food. So I had told the hostess, who I think is the manager that we were bringing a 91 year old lady with a walker in. So, she proceeds to seat us in a very difficult way to escort mom. I had to lift the walker over a lady (who seemed perturbed to be bothered) seating at another table to get the walker pass. Really!! If I was the lady sitting there I would have gotten up and moved the chair. But regardless, we finally got mom sat and ordered our food. Mom had the sweet n sour chicken which was pretty good. I ordered the Hunan Combinations SPICY. It did not come out spicy at all. I ordered fried rice with it. I swear the rice was not fried. I asked our server twice, she just said it is fried and walked away. My MIL got the steamed rice and the only difference was mine had egg, peas but the same color. Same color and fried?
