My wife and I stopped by Hunan Village for lunch on a random Tuesday afternoon and we both ordered the lunch special. The lunch special includes your choice of protein -- from over 40 different options, their soup of the day -- which for us was hot and sour soup, steamed rice, a wedge of orange and a fortune cookie. I got their Mongolian lamb while my wife got the sweet and sour pork. They're really quite generous with how much protein they serve you. I thought the lamb slices were really tender and well seasoned, and the pork was fried well -- crispy without being overly oily. The breading wasn't too thick, and the sauce had just the right amount of tanginess to it. The rice was a bit on the dry side, but for a lunch special, I didn't have the highest expectations. Overall, the food here is a step up from what you can typically find at Panda Express. The food is fresher -- since everything is cooked to order, instead of sitting under a heat lamp for hours, and you have a lot more protein options here. Found myself on Grand Avenue in late afternoon. A lot of restaurants were closed but Hunan Village was thankfully still open. I was greeted as I walked in this cozy spot and encouraged to sit down wherever I chose. There were two patrons already, one enjoying the streetscape and another facing away focused on papers. Lunch specials were over. I ordered prawns and Chinese greens and tea. The meal was delicious and aside from checking in to see I was good, I was left to enjoy my meal peacefully. I was introduced to this place by a friend, and I've gone back for takeout twice so far. The first time, we had Peking Beef, House Fried Rice, Eggrolls, and fried Prawns. The Peking Beef was tender and easy to eat. The fried rice was soft and fluffy. Service was prompt. The interior was neat, with white tablecloths. Today I ordered for takeout: - Chicken Egg Foo Young - House Fried Rice - Won Ton Soup Wait time: 20 mins. I have to say, I have never ordered Egg Foo Young in a restaurant before. My Mom used to make it, and I miss her cooking. As takeout, Hunan Village serves it in two containers. A large egg omelette is in a tray. And a savory rich gravy with tender chicken and mushrooms are in a plastic container. I chopped up the egg a little, and poured the gravy on top. Very delicious with the fried rice. Serving enough for 2-3 people. The Won Ton Soup was pretty good. They loaded it up with mostly beef and some shrimp. They add body to the soup with shredded cabbage, to go with the dumplings. I came here during a weekday to have lunch with the bestie. We were seated right away in a dining room with lots of seating. I ordered the string beans with chicken and we shared the tomato beef chow mein. My friend (who had been there before) had the broccoli beef. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the food tasted. The food was OK. We believe this restaurant. has changed owners. When we asked to have boxes to take home the left over food, a substantial amount, because we planned on having food for a few days. The waitress took our plates of food back to the kitchen and brought out 4 boxes. One of the boxes was not even full, and it seemed much of the food still on the serving platters was not in these boxes. Usually restaurants bring out boxes and we would fill them ourselves. I won't eat here again. We paid $100 for the food and it seemed we didn't have enough in the boxes we took home. We used to like this place but won't eat there again. read more

My family went with the prawn fried rice and chow mein, and I get the broccoli beef. I'm happy to say it's still just as good. The portion size is great with feeding 2-3 easily. As tempted from my first visit, I took my family and my parents back to Hunan Village last Friday for lunch. We ordered potstickers, egg rolls, sizzling rice soup, dried fee chow fun, house special chow mein, salt and pepper chicken wing, and Mongolian lamb. Some dishes were recommended by Vicky, waitress, from my first visit. We love the egg rolls which is crispy and fresh. Sizzling rice soup's highlight is the "sizzling rice". The broth could have a bit more flavor like chicken and beef base. Mongolian lamb is my first. The green onion and white onion are so fresh. Lamb is in good amount. Great pick of the day. The highly recommended dried beef chow fun did met your expectations. From the chow fun texture and look you can tell the chef did put in a good amount of time to stir fry the noodle to make it to perfection. A bit of dark soy sauce will make the presentation even better. It was a busy Friday. We got there at 1pm. Customers kept coming for quick lunch. Change in ownership and the quality has completely fallen off. The staff is rude, waited longer than we ever for our food to arrive. Folks came in after us and were served first. The prices are much higher and they have controlled the servings to smaller plates. The Crab Rangoon didn't taste the same, like they added something different that couldn't put my tastebuds too. The shrimp if that what it was, whole lot of breading no shrimp! The appetizer platter was over cooked, their special garlic noodles came with green beans (??????) not much favor. We met some friends visiting from Pennsylvania here for dinner. They have trouble finding good Chinese food where they live. We were all delighted with our meal! Sweet and sour prawns, Kung Pao chicken, bbq pork fried rice, and pot stickers were all yummy. My hubby is on a special diet, and he enjoyed his no meat green beans and the braised tofu. However, I just recently went here (in August 2024) and noticed they've had a recent ownership change. And.. Right away I noticed the plates are much smaller, the food is not as good and they've gotten rid of some of best items on the menu (including their famous paper wrapped chicken), which was one of their best items. The pitfall of trying new places is sometimes I don't without the expectations. This little place in the Piedmont area of Oakland seemed like it would be a real find. Instead, I found them to have pretty mediocre Chinese food. They do it a lot of places do and substitute actual quality with lots of vegetables. FOOD: The quality of the ingredients that were used in the dishes was actually very good. However the sauces were pretty bland and there were way too many vegetables given that these were both chicken dishes. The sizzling rice soup though was good and I enjoyed it. SERVICE: no complaints on service. Everything was as they said it would be. It was packaged nicely and quickly and easy to take home. COST: cost was reasonable considering everything. read more

You just don't forget the taste of a dish when you've been eating there at least once a month for thirty years. I am sad to say that with the new ownership the food is NOT the same. I understand the previous owners needed to retire but they were told the recipes would be given to the new owners. The new owners have not given this neighborhood staple the value/ quality that the pervious owners put in. The sauces are done without care. The veggies are not cut to perfection. The meat has not selected for each dish. The pervious owners had so much care and thought put into each dish. They should change the name and let HUNAN VILLAGE have its legacy. Came here today though and I see they have gotten new owners, changed the place around, smaller portion sizes and removed some of the menu items. . I don't like to write bad reviews unless warranted. The staff never came over and asked if we needed more water. They wasn't gonna bring out the customary soup and the tea pot wasn't full. Surroundings - It's on busy Grand Ave, but it's still noticeable and easy to find. Atmosphere - New staff isn't so welcoming, the do say hello when you enter, but don't really engage much. Menu - Was pretty much the same, but they changed a few things/specials. We always order family style. We got the Crab Rangoons (over cooked), Appetizer Platter (over cooked), Green Beans, Garlic Noodles ( not the greatest and the added green beans) and the Salt and Pepper Fish. Service - Wasn't engaging and they claimed they couldn't hear us. Food - Crab Rangoons were over cooked and hard, Appetizer Platter was also over cooked, the shrimp was no where to be found, the Green Beans were just ok, they were missing something, Garlic Noodles didn't get us either, and the added green beans to them, and the Salt and Pepper Fish which was pretty good, but salty and a smaller portion size. Overall - It's sad to say that when new ownership comes in but keeps the same name, they try to make it on the old name. Pork Fried Rice - I was a little disappointed when I saw that the fried rice was white (usually means there not a flavor) but it was actually pretty good. There was flavor and I enjoyed the rice. Pekk Chicken - I ordered this because of the reviews. I liked it. It reminded me of general tso chicken or sesame chicken (with out the sesame seeds), it was not too sweet. Mongolian Beef - I also like this. There was not a ton of sauce but was okay. There was a lot of green onions and I liked that. Wonton Soup - I tried a little bit of this and it had a good flavor.
