It's been a while since I've wrote a bad review but tonight I'm breaking up with I Dumpling. As much as I love your reasonably priced, delicious dumplings and fried chicken bento, I absolutely hate your consistent shitty customer service that usually deals with the the usual rude, frantic, and disgruntled man that runs the floor and gives no fucks about his customers. As a Chinese American, I understand that traditional Chinese restaurants are not known for their customer service and I have no problem with the staff being rude as long as I get my order taken, food doesn't take forever to arrive, and restaurant is clean. I'm only asking for the bare minimum. But here at I Dumpling they always fuck up, whether it's missing an item I ordered dining in or waiting forever for my to-go orders. The last time I was here to pick up to-go we waited an extra 20 minutes for a group order. If it's going to take 30 minutes for my to-go order just say so. Don't under estimate the time and piss people off. Tonight I ordered online, arrived 30 minutes late to come pick up my order because they never have their shit together and right when I thought for once my order is ready without any fuss I was SO WRONG. The man hands me a bag and I asked him which box was my shrimp and chives dumpling and then he pauses...shuffles through the order, flips through all his paper invoices, and then proceeds to making a few calls. I asked him point blank if he gave my order to the wrong person and he admitted so and tells me to wait another 10 minutes to re-do the order. NO apology, NO reconciliation, NO compensation with extra dumplings to make up for this huge fuck up! NO FUCKS. I was steaming the entire time I was waiting for my second order. If it wasn't already paid for I would have stormed the hell out of there since they took this mistake so lightly. I Dumpling, you might have good and reasonably priced food but your customer service is a disaster! I love their dumpling a lot! We have tried all of the flavors and didn't find anything we hate. They make a different style of dumping than I usually make at home, but the dumpling tastes very good. (the dumpling flour skin is pretty thick and dumpling is a little bit small) However, we would recommend not ordering any other dishes except dumpling. So far, we have tried their soup noodles, xiaolong bao, huntun(dumpling in soup) and we are very disappointed. I would give 1 or 2 stars for any other food they serve here. Restaurant is pretty small so definitely expect to wait in line! The soup dumplings were okay.. the skin was a little too thick for my liking. I like the beef tendon noodle soup. Super tasty! It's never a good sign when you see more than 1 or 2 regional dishes on a Chinese restaurant menu. I Dumpling serves a combination of Shanghainese, Taiwanese, and northern Chinese cuisine. Those are quite different specialties to be mastered in one establishment. I didn't try any of the Taiwanese dishes, but I would stay away from the xiao long bao. Those were the least authentic. The boiled dumplings were pretty good. I would recommend the fennel and pork if you like fennel. I've never seen that type on a menu before and it actually reminds me of home! The pork potstickers were mediocre. The skin was a little to thick and the filling lacks some flavor. tl;dr stay away from any of the dumplings besides the boiled ones. read more

She did not make it through our crazy economic crisis and decided to shut her business down. Fast forward, some nice gentlemen took over the place and renamed it w/ I Dumpling! Although I think it would be more unique if they called it "I (heart) Dumplings!" Anyways, this place is now serving noodles and dumplings. This is suppose to be the new hit spot to take over the crazy expansions of San Francisco's "Dumpling King / King of Noodle" owner. What did I order? - Beef Noodle Soup (Spicy version) - Lamb Dumplings - Cold Cucumber Dish Marinated in Chopped Garlic - Preserved Vege + Shredded Pork Noodles Cold dish came first! Cucumbers were very tasty and fresh w/ a slight smell of garlic aroma everytime you take a bite! I loved this and it reminded me of Taiwanese Cold Dishes. My "Beef Noodle Soup" came a few minutes after. Drink a teaspoon of the soup first to test the taste. Guess what? The chicken and corn dumplings here are pretty delicious. They are more juicy than any other chicken dumplings I've ever had. Usually chicken dumplings are very dry. But I came here really to try the Xiao Long Baos. They came out in a tray of 6 and looked very...sad. Shriveled up. But when you bite into them, they are full of soup! So surprising! And so so delicious! We also ordered the wonton soup. The soup itself was filled with wontons. I think there might have been 8-10 wontons in there! It was a pretty decent portion, but I didn't like the flavor of it too much. The broccoli and shrimp dish was a little salty, but the broccoli was cooked perfectly. I really enjoyed my meal here. I had been previously when the place was Formosa Bento House and enjoyed the simple pork chop bento rice platters. Now that FBH has closed, it's nice to see a similarly authentic Chinese place has opened in it's place. I Dumpling specializes in fresh hand-made noodles and dumplings. On a Friday night, the small interior was packed and it's good to see a delicious great value place like this get the traffic it deserves. The owner greets you when you enter and is eager to both introduce and welcome you to his modest restaurant space. There are amazingly three cooks in the kitchen for such a small space, which tells you this place takes food seriously. Our order: Xiao Long Bao ($4.95) - nicely priced for 6 moderately sized dumplings. The skins were a tad thick, but the soup content was clear and ample. Also liked the quality pork they used for filling. I'd definitely order this again. Lamb Dumplings - I'm not really a fan of boiled dumplings but decided to order an entree to see how it was. Really tasted fresh and hand-made. You have to drive a bit farther up the Peninsula to get similar quality fare (San Mateo). Shredded Pork and Mustard Green Noodle Soup - great fresh pulled noodles with a flavorful broth and a nice mix of shredded pork and mustard greens. I'll definitely order noodle dishes and soup noodles again. I Dumpling is a welcome addition to the Peninsula and, especially, a welcome addition to the Redwood City area. I went to "I Dumpling" hoping for a "food therapy" to have a great, delicious meal, and splurge on calories (without the counting). Unfortunately, my mood was actually declining rapidly about 15 minutes after I sat down as the service was just horrible and made me feel like a second class citizen. What a shame! The tables and chairs are all so extremely tight, and seems like everyone was there after reading the raving reviews on Yelp (as I was waiting for a table, another customer who also was waiting for a table told me she found it on Yelp and was really eager to try it). Ok, the size of the restaurant was not what's ticking me of. It was the male server, they had two servers when I was there, a mid-aged woman and a young man. The lady was actually pretty nice, but maybe because of her english (not good), she was more of the buslady while the man was the waiter, taking food orders and deliver them. I ordered pork & shrimp dumplings with chives. The dumplings were actually pretty good, HOWEVER, the man left the whole plate on my table and I asked him to bring me a small plate/saucer/bowl so that I could make some dipping sauce. Also, I knew that I wouldn't be able to finish the whole plate of dumplings, and I wanted to take some home, so I didn't want to pour the soy sauce and vinegar all over them. I don't think that was a lot of ask, afterall, people do use dipping sauce to eat dumplings. He left and NEVER came back. I asked him for the 2nd time when he dropped off my second dish and again, he said "yes" but then he never came back. Then I asked again when he delivered food to the next table and he never came back! The dumplings were getting cold and I was hungry and pissed! I also ordered the cold dish, spicy sliced tendon.....The portion was ok, but they sliced the tendon wayyyy toooo thin, it kinda killed the tendon! then my 3rd dish came.. a gigantic bowl of spicy sliced beef noodle soup. But there was NO SPOON! Where is the common sense here??? And I asked for a bowl and spoon and again, he never came back. The part that was pissing me off was that the next table asked for small bowls bc they were sharing the noodle soup.. and guess what, he brought the bowls to them right away!!! I really don't know what was his problem!! And btw, I was still smiling and trying to compose myself..... I Dumpling is a reasonably priced, hole in the wall taiwanese dumpling place. The interior is very basic with limited seating but food does come out quickly. Service is lacking so I would probably recommend take-out over dining-in. They are incredibly understaffed and one lady plays the combined role of hostess, waitress, manager, and busboy. I Dumpling... not sure if the name is a pun bouncing off 愛 meaning love and/or iThings by Apple. TL;DR DUMPLINGS. But not XLB (the skin looks too thick). But get the dumplings! One important thing to note is that I Dumpling is NOT Asian Fusion. The only item that's marginally fusion is the Taiwanese bento lunch rice plates, which is Taiwanese and not fusion. And even then, I Dumpling can hardly be classified as Taiwanese since this seems to be a side gig. Overall, the restaurant specializes in Shanghaiese cuisine i.e. dumplings and noodles i.e. carb heaven. (+/-) Green onion pancake |Greasier than usual, but honestly that's what made it tasty :3 Portion size was small and could have used more green onion. Definitely had better at other places. (+++) Pork/shrimp/chive dumplings | Woaw, dumpling game on point, with a distinctive homemade style and no shortage of culinary finesse. The dumplings are deliciously soupy, masterfully balanced in flavor, and boasted a composition of surprisingly lean pork. I don't think I've had non-XLB dumplings with this much soup before! Excellent way to make succulent dumplings (sans fatty pork.) (++) Wonton noodle soup | The wonton skins were thicker than the usual cloud-like wonton. I remember when this used to be a solid Mexican joint, then Formosa (which I never tried). i Dumpling: not great name, but great food. Got: -Crispy fried salt/pepper tofu -XLB -Lamb dumplings -Pork and chive dumplings -Beef pancakes -Pork and napa cabbage dumplings Everything was super tasty. An updated review after trying their dumplings. They make fairly nice Xiao Long Bao and excellent dumplings. Xiao Long Bao - Skin was slightly thick but the amount of soup was decent. The filling was a bit plain but the texture was good. I love how they use lettuce leave instead of paper as lining. They won't stick to the bottom so you won't have any trouble with breakage. Dumplings - Tried the lamb and the pork & shrimp with green chives ones. Both were lovely. I like the gamey lamb flavor and the juicy filling. I think the dumplings trumps all of their dishes. I could easily eat a dozen or two. Their pig ears appetizer is quite good too if you like that kind of things. Very primitive ambiance but super friendly service. My dumpling and I came here for lunch to try out their Xiao Long Bao and ended up getting a few extra treats while we were there. Yum. I love me some homemade noodles. =) I was looking for something soupy to eat after my gallbladder surgery. I saw on Yelp that they had homemade noodles and dumplings and I was there! It's definitely a small place. And my husband and I barely got in before they closed in the afternoon to get ready for the dinner rush. For appetizers, my husband and I tried the shanghai dumplings and beef pancake. The shanghai dumplings were piping hot and delicious. A couple of the dumplings were missing the broth that's normally in it. I guess there was a hole in the dumpling skin. The beef pancake was an onion pancake with lots of thin slices of beef stuffed in it. Kind of oily, but the pancake had a nice crispness to it. I wanted the spicy sliced beef noodle soup so bad! But I don't think my stomach would have liked me very much. I went for the mustard pork noodle soup instead. It wasn't too spicy, but it definitely had its own kick from the mustard. I loved the homemade noodles. They absorbed the flavor from the broth and had a nice texture to them. Next time I come I want to try one of their homemade boiled dumplings. This hole-in-the-wall restaurant sports a gimmicky name, but dishes out some seriously good dim sum cuisine. The Shanghai Steamed Dumplings were filled with a ridiculous amount of juicy broth. The Pork and Chive Dumplings and Pork Pot Stickers were also great. The Beef Pancake was also one of the best I've tasted. Ok, look, a couple of things. The dumplings are thick because it's northern style. In china, they don't even really think northern is a style, so you can say "home style", it's just dumplings, not the fancy kind you would get in a high-end restaurant. Sometimes I'm jonesing for the northern style, because it's so chewy and hearty, but just know it's a style not because the restaurant is cheap. Service. This is actual chinese service. If something is taking too long, raise your hand. If it's really taking too long, help yourself. If you can't help yourself, go over to the desk and talk to them. You can be polite about it, and if the waitperson is helping someone else, he'll give you a nod and get to you soon. For certain, you have to ask for the check. In China, that's good service. They will never bring you the check, that's rude. The next northern-style place is up in San Mateo, and I don't know any until you get through to Sunnyvale somewhere. It's a rarity, go and enjoy. Just expect chinese style. There's a hilarious review here where someone gave the place 2 stars because the kung pao chicken was too spicy. Ha ha. First, don't order kung pao in a dumpling place. Second, it's probably authentic kung pao not the watered down american stuff because the place is legit and kung pao is supposed to be spicy. Don't be the guy who ruins a good authentic place by saying it's too spicy and making the chefs look at you funny, go back to Pf Chang. read more

Formosa Bento House was on my bookmarks for so long, so I'm sad I never got to try it. I happened to be in the area and was excited to see they had XLB (xiao long bao - Shanghai soup dumplings) closer to home. After reading reviews on here, my son and I came in around 5 pm on a Thursday. The place was empty except for a lady ordering take-out. The place is pretty small when it's empty so I can only imagine when people are there. However, the place was clean and the tables were new. The server, who i assume is the owner, was very friendly, trying to get my shy son to talk him. Based on reviews I ordered a beef stew soup with fresh noodles, plus the XLB and some pork & cabbage dumplings. We had some hot jasmine tea while we waited - yum. Since we were the only guests there, the owner hovered a bit much for my taste, but that's better than being ignored, right? He explained the two different sauces for dumplings when he brought them out. When the food came, you could tell everything was freshly made. The noodles in the soup were wonderfully chewy. I barely got any dumplings, as my son gobbled them up while I was still enjoying my soup. I guess that means the dumplings are good! The XLB were a little smaller than the more flavorful versions I've had at Panda Dumpling in San Carlos, but still good. Price wise - it's so reasonable! Most items are in the $5-$7 range. Wow, Ernie F. wasn't kidding about the sheer awesome of these dumps! I Dumpling is indeed a hole-in-the-wall, but the small place is very well kept by a surprisingly warm and friendly owner (always worth noting when going to any authentic Chinese establishment) who even remembered my bro's previous visit. Now the food. Five Spices Marinated Beef was dry and entirely forgettable...but who cares when the dumps follow. Our dozen of Pork & Fennel was inhaled within minutes and we agreed that the combination of fresh filling and expertly crafted skins was outstanding. No other place I've come across has been able to achieve the bounce in the skins we ate here and to top it all off, the dumps came at the perfect temperature to be eaten right away whereas most places just toss them onto a plate straight out of the pot. While the XLB here don't quite match up to the dumps, I definitely enjoyed the juiciness and delicate flavors of the pork within. The skins could use some work though as 2 of my 3 broke open as I picked them up. Looking forward to trying the noodle dishes and other dump fillings soon. read more

They were okay, I was just happy that there was soup in them! Boiled Dumplings with Pork and Chives: Tastes exactly like the XLB (same skin, same filling if you want, except different shape) and they have soup in them, too! I suggest ordering these instead of the XLB because they taste the same and you get more for a similar price! 12 dumplings for ~$6.50 Pork Pot Stickers: Tastes exactly like the other two dumplings except with a nice caramelized bottom yum yum. Also 6 for ~$6.50? I would just order a bunch of the boiled dumplings because its cheaper! Beef Noodle Soup: A bit salty, but I appreciated that the noodles were tasty and homemade. There was the tree fungus (black, flappy, mook-yee) that was really nice. But, there was not enough vegetable (bok choy). I just wanted one more piece of bok choy! This is one of my go-to places to grab food - I end up going almost every month! It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant but the dumplings and soups are to die for. I always order the pork and chives dumplings and they taste just like the ones my family makes in China! The pork and fennel dumplings and soup dumplings are also really good, and if you still have room for more you should definitely order the wonton noodle soup. Service isn't fantastic, but it's not too hard to flag down someone to help you! Overall, this place has amazing dumplings and I'll definitely be back soon to satisfy my dumpling cravings. read more
