I love sandwiches and this place has delicious ones!! That is a fact. The food quality is great, the timing is quick, ordering online is easy. I knocked one star because I have written modifications both times I have visited and they were ignored. This isn't a huge deal to me because I understand that things happen, especially in a busy restaurant such as this. However, if you have a food allergy or something like that, I would probably call and talk to someone as to save both of you time when you pick it up. As far as pandemic safety, it seems that they try and enforce protocols. I have been to a few places on Telegraph that haven't been strict about masks or social distancing, but IB's has the ground marked, it is an open storefront and the staff/ customers were definitely masked! Overall, I definitely felt safe getting food from there and will be visiting again. I just don't get the high reviews for this place. The sandwiches we got we're greasy, overcooked, and flavorless. Well, unless you count grease as a flavor. The lettuce was old and wilted, the tomatoes we're mushy/mealy, and the sauce was really just a load of mayo slathered all over the place. The meat... Why would you do this to meat? What did it do to you? What would make you cook the life out of the meat to the point that it's basically just chopped rubber with nothing left to it. Just garbage. The fries were actually worse. Surprisingly. They were hard, grease caked, and stale. Just gross. I can't recall the last time I've thrown out more than 1/2 an order of fries... Dude, the best cheesesteak in the East Bay Area. We were in the Berkeley area to pick up our Yelp goodie bag and wanted to try something new for lunch. I was craving sandwiches and saw that this was nearby, I had to try! I must say they do a great job on marketing via social media; they post tons of appetizing pictures and do a good job highlighting local artists, players, etc in the East Bay. This place has a great setup for the pandemic.. it's really easy to order take-out and go... with no place to sit. Customer service was extremely friendly per my fiance who went in to order... the cashier asked how he was doing and was pleasant the whole time. There were TV's showing local sports while you wait, which wasn't that long. My fiance was in and out in less than 10 minutes. The menu has great selections from a variety of hoagies, burgers, fries, etc. I had the regular spicy cheesesteak with lettuce/tomato/cheese/grilled onions and my fiance had the regular buffalo cheeseteak with everything in it; both with grass fed beef. It was about $11 for each sandwich, which is a steal since the portions were big. We ate it 20 minutes later when we got home and it still looked and tasted fresh. First bite, I was amazed at the juicy beef, savory peppers, and the spicy sauce. It was the PERFECT spice and I love to eat spicy. Everything included the veggies blended well together. They provided a very hearty portion of meat and toppings! The regular size is enough to fill up one very hungry person... I ate only half of my sandwich and was content the entire day, didn't even snack. My fiance enjoyed his sandwich, he ate half then ate the other half 20 minutes later because it was too good. Next time I want to try their fries and order the larger size to share with my family. I just had a piece of my other half for early dinner and it was still good as leftovers! OMG - that was an insanely delicious cheesesteak! I avoided the lines by getting there when they opened, but even with a line it would be totally worth the wait. The generous portion of beef plus the sauce makes it hard to eat without making a mess and wearing a bib would not be a bad idea because this bad boy was JUICY! If you don't like sauce dripping out of your sandwich, this might not be for you, but if you do - run, don't walk. I've been here several times with my friend. We were surprised on how big and how much meat they add their Philly cheesesteaks. They don't hold back. Greasy, cheesy, and juicy is how these sandwiches are. Best to eat in you car so you can taste the freshness. If you take it home to eat then it'll still be good but not as good as it is when it's freshly made. Don't be shy to ask for extra napkins. It was also quite peppery, which was fine, but overall, the excessive seasoning really drowned out the meaty taste. Its a cheese steak with barely any cheese?? Not gonna lie they give you a decent amount of meat but the quality of meat is trash. It has the texture of damn near groud beef. To me, IB's is one of those establishments that are a Berkeley staple in terms of cheap/fast comfort food. I've been a fan of their spinach steaks since my Freshman year of college. They stuff the sandwiches with toppings so even a 6 inch is sooo filling! The bread holds up well with all the toppings as well so that's a huge plus. *My friend is a huge fan of the bacon steaks so definitely give that a shot. ALSO: There are only 2 tables for outside seating so it's more of a to-go kind of place. TIP: They have gotten more expensive over the years so pay with cash if you want it to be a bit cheaper (there's a 4% fee with cards) TIP: Don't get the regular fries.
