I was drawn in by the sign that says "Home of the Original Tuna Nachos" ... Needless to say I am glad we came in! The Tuna Nachos are one of the best things I have ever eaten. Maybe it's because we went there around 9:30 pm but the place was not clean and our table was sticky. The employees threw food into the water and we even witnessed a bleach rag squeezed out over the water. Our table had rice in its grooves and lettuce under it. There was a medium sized dog at an adjacent table well behaved but unexpected. We ordered shrimp tacos which had barely any shrimp, shrimp teriyaki rolls which weren't bad and two shrimp skewers which were thawed and not grilled at all. The waitress was nice and even insisted on taking the skewers off our tab. We had two sodas and all this was $51 with a $6 tip. Monday night at a restaurant, we should have known better. We wanted takeout conch chowder (6- 8 0z containers 1/2 full), 1 tuna nacho and 1 booze drink +1 diet coke. Not much? Well, first of all the order cost $80, yes $80. If it had been very good or even good that would have been OK but the chowder was very thin like it had been watered down from Sunday's pot. Not much conch in that chowder. The chowder was not ready so my two daughters sat at the bar and one had a diet coke and the other a martini. When she asked for more olives the bartender threw them in the diet coke. Funny? I don't think so. These women were not kids by far. My husband and I went there end of Jan. 2013 and had an OK dinner--fish overcooked and cuban sandwich too greasy to eat. My husband wrote a review in his fishing blog and the owner wrote back and said he would do better next time. In the last decade we must have gone to Island Grill at least 50 times. Island Grill has a some really excellent dishes. The Tuna Nachos are outstanding, the spicy tuna roll is excellent and the crunchy catch sandwich is also very good. This time I also tried the Crunchy whole Hog fish. It was also very good and very well presented. I always leave Island Grill satisfied. If you read the other reviews about service issues, and are concerned, ask for Aldo to serve you. He's a very pleasant young man, bi-lingual and is on top of his tables. He did a great job! I come here everytime I have to work in Islamarada, Everything on the menu is solid and creative to the point where it can suit about everyone, presentation is also really good if your into that thing. Nice staff. They just expanded and have double the seating outside which is nice. In case you're curious, the tuna nachos is just tuna with seaweed salad on crispy wontons, like you can get anywhere in the keys. Just got up and walked out after waiting 25 minutes for our waitress to come back and take our order. A couple that was seated after us got their food before we even placed our order! I waved at our waitress to get her attention and still nothing. When we came in sign said "wait to be seated" after 10 mins we seated ourselves. We threw down $12 for 4 cokes and walked out. When you make it over to Island Grill, skip the indoor seating and ask to go out back on the sand beach bar area. At dusk there is nothing better. You may want to bring a little bit of bug spray though. Had a fantastic meal as well as cocktails and the waiters were great. Highly recommend the whole fish as it was absolutely delicious, moist and crispy. Wonderful for a date or a bunch of friends have been there with both. I like the fact that there's a good menu out there and you can get sushi to steaks. I have yet to have a bad meal there and we'll go back there once again read more

Big disappointment with Island Grill. It was packed with tourists, few locals. There was one waitress for the inside area for all the tables and the bar, she looked stressed and it made us feel uncomfortable as she barked at us to order. We wanted to share something since we had eaten lunch late. We went for the Mahi tacos and a slice of key lime pie. The two tacos came, there was so much slaw that everything was falling out, the chunks of mahi weren't cut so we had to break them up to scatter them in. It was a big mess to eat, because the bottom was loaded with sour cream which soaked the tortilla and it broke. Quite the disaster. Above everything, two tacos for $15 is steep. The entrees ranged in the $30 range, which was on the ridiculous side. The key lime pie was yummy but didn't seem homemade. Overall this place is over charging because tourists will come because of it's location on the water, but the food is sub-par, service is lacking and you'll be out-of-pocket because of it. read more

i really liked this place.. the waitresses are a bit tough, at first, but warm up quickly enough with a smile and nice manners.. i ordered the sushi-grade tuna sandwich with a side of french fries and a pickle. My sandwich came out divine which i asked for very rare and it was very mouth-wateringly good. the fries were coated with a very light cheese topping that was baked on top just to give it an added salty flavor.. I asked for a slop of mayo on the side (but of course) and they were happy to oblige... the outdoor feel with being right next to the water in an open gazebo added extra charm on a bright sunny day. food came out quickly too. a good choice... when in the hood. read more

The best part of this place is the ambiance. It's located right on the water. Boaters will pull up right next to you while you eat. It feels a little crowded there but the wait staff has always been friendly and fun. The food is solid but a little pricey. I've never had a terrible experience there. read more

We went here for dinner mid week and decided to sit in the bar area due to very loud live music playing in the main restaurant. We had a view of the channel and mangroves. Our service was slow and didn't seem too knowledgeable. I ordered a flavored martini which was way too strong to drink. Seafood pasta was good but the lobster mac 'n cheese was bland. I was very disappointed to pay $27 for something with no flavor. The brownie dessert was yummy but very rich and definitely sharable sized. The fried cheesecake is disgusting, it was like cinnamon crusted slime. Overall the place was way overpriced and I would not go back. read more

Ordered the teriyaki tuna steak sandwich (ordered rare) Advertised as sushi grade but this was not the case, color was off and lacked that sushimi flavor I expect from raw tuna and a large chunk was inedible (never came across this problem before with tuna steak ).. sweet potato fries were over cooked, low in quantity and one of them had strange cotton fibers attached. I ventured to this spot last week for breakfast and thought it was great! We were sat next to a group of coast guards enjoying breakfast, so I knew we were in good hands. If the restaurant is filled with locals then it must be good! I enjoyed an egg white omelette with grits and whole wheat toast. The service and food were great.
