These are my favorite fish and chips: juicy cod in a vey thin and crisp batter, hot and crispy fries. Sprinkled with garlic vinegar and dipped in their onion-y, pickle-y tartar, it's delicious. AND behind the counter at the Aurora Ave location, the folks -- many of whom have worked here for years -- are unfailingly cheerful, welcoming, and accommodating. They deliver your food to your table, stay on top of cleaning, and always have a kind word for arriving and departing guests. Being new to the area, I've never been to an Ivar's Seafood Bar before. In fact I haven't eaten seafood in awhile so I was excited that this place was so close and had decent reviews. First off the gentleman who took my order was the only good thing about this place. Regardless, to make a long story short, I just wasn't impressed. This establishment made me think it's quality of food and decor came from a time when McDonald's and Long John Silver's had a neglected love child. Even though I was thinking this, I wasn't even going to leave a review until I was given the worst oysters ever given to a paying customer. The first oyster I ate was incredibly fishy, luke warm and just tasted off. I ate it thinking it was a one off. Then I proceeded to eat the second one - the same funky flavor. I decided to spit it out into a napkin. I then realized there was green poop/entrails oozing out of the oyster. I just have no patience to an establishment that doesn't know how to prepare their menu and then charge $20 for a ruined meal. WTF! Needless to say, I will NEVER visit any Ivar's again in the future. Decent spot ! If you are looking for a low-budget place to sit and eat with the family or friends by the water. What I like most about this place is the sit down formal restaurant and a side fast food section. Since we were not up for the formal section, sitting by the water was just as nice. They also have a few great 100 cents = $1 items on the menu for people that don't want to commit to one item. I could eat their salmon and chips or their scallops and chips every day. Their staff is unbelievably friendly. There is an older gentleman who questions every customer that wants more than one ketchup and one tartar sauce which I think is odd. I had been wanting to check this place out since I saw it on a TV show on HBO's Vice. I was intrigued by the idea that they fried salmon and had been around for so long. My order was taken quickly and my food also came out quickly. The salmon was pretty tasty, as well as the fries that came with it. I tested out the various vinegar dipping sauces they offered as well as the tartar sauce, but none of them really did anything for me. Ketchup actually ended up being my favorite dipping sauce. I would definitely go back for one of their other types of fried fish that you can get. For those looking for amazing chowder, look no farther than Ivar's. The white chowder is one of the better chowders available. The red chowder has a tomato base. A great go to is the fish and chips. As for a lot of the things on the menu, they are fried. Unlike some places where deep frying equals to oily and greasy food, this is not the case here. They have a variety of dipping sauces and malt vinegar for your fries. The place is well kept and clean. It shows that the workers take pride in this place. Excellent staff and great food. I crave Ivar's often but seldom go in. I guess I'm trying to avoid eating a huge meal with lots of fries. Well, I did stop into this location on Aurora this week, and I left very happy! First of all, the customer service was excellent, with cheery, chipper staff who helped me make sense of the menu and find something of reasonable size to eat. I got the mahi tacos, which included a perfect 4 oz. of fish with lots of fresh cole slaw, some salsa fresca, and a small side of corn chips. Even better, my meal was served on a real plate! I grew up in the 1940s and 50s eating at the original Ivar's Waterfront location. So Ivar's fish and chips is synonymous with Seattle to me. I haven't lived in Seattle for 50 years, but whenever I visit, Ivar's is a must. This location has the authentic menu and is more convenient for dining in with a rather large group of parents and kids. The food is consistently excellent and the staff is exceptional. This is probably my 4th time here, but first check in and review. The staff is also so nice, helpful and funny! They always make me feel welcomed and valued. The environment is really cozy and it's nice to dine in at, no loud music or distractions. Now on to the food! So far, I've tried the New England clam chowder, halibut, clams, oysters and jumbo prawns. Each were winners! They're the best fried fish I've had since living in the Pacific Northwest, couldn't recommend them enough! You must try them if you haven't yet. read more
