Stoped in for dinner and on random Wednesday night. Food was exelent heated up in the microwave later that night. However our service sucked. My girlfriends order was put in wrong and she was brought out the wrong dish.(we were told our server was in training) so by time her food actually came out 20 min later mine was completely cold and we were just ready to go. We ended up taking all of our food to go. Nothing was offered to be done other than an apology and the excuse about the server. It was just okay. I had the steak & fries. ($26) my husband had the cheeseburger ($14) he said it was too small for the price, in comparison to other gourmet burgers. Personally my steak/fries were way too salty for my taste. I ordered my steak well done, but it was a bit too charred personally. Overall decent service, our waiter was very attentive, but somewhat reserved. The AC was also unnecessarily cold, especially for a nippy cold November I felt it blasting down my head. Ok, let me just start off by saying that the carrot cake here is to die for!! SO GOOD! Warm, melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. I tried a bite of my sister-in-law's, and it just made me wish I had gotten my own piece! I have been to restaurants nearby here before, but had never actually been to J Alexander's until now ...which is a shame because I have been missing out! We came here tonight for my mother-in-law's birthday, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food. I got the Mr Jack's chicken tender platter, and it was yummy! Especially the sauces that came with it. I didn't even need ketchup for the fries, I just dipped them in the sauces that were for the chicken. The only slightly negative thing I could say about this platter was that the coleslaw was a little bit on the dry side for my taste. I also had more than half of my meal to take home for leftovers. Portion sizes are YUGE! As for other desserts besides the carrot cake, my mother-in-law got the Key Lime pie for her birthday dessert, and she really enjoyed it! The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. We went in the evening, and all of the tables had lit candles to create a nice ambience ...it was a little dark at first, but your eyes adjust. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The menu is a little pricey, but the large portions and quality of food are worth it. This would be a good place to go for special occasions. Also, dress for the restaurant seems to be a dressy casual. I wore a nice top/cardigan with jeans and boot heels and felt appropriately dressed. It had been years since my last visit. I don't remember it being quite so pricey, but once I began eating....I could see you get what you pay for. I was seated right away on a Wednesday evening around 6 p.m. I was alone but was given an ample, booth. I noted that there was a built in space between the booths so you didn't feel every move from people seated behind you. The atmosphere feels romantic with dim lighting and soft spoken wait staff who are all dressed in black. I started with a Redgrill salad, with blue cheese dressing. The mixed greens were very fresh and that dressing....amazing...possibly the best blue cheese dressing I have ever tasted! The salad came with a warm croissant drizzled with honey butter....yeah, I blew my low carb diet outta the water...but ah YUM! My entree, the Maui Ribeye was perfectly cooked to my request of medium rare plus. One of the vegetables of the day was something I have never eaten but always wanted to try...spaghetti squash which came atop a thin line of pomodoro sauce. It was a new texture for me, but they must of done something right because I would eat it again. Gérardo was very attentive without becoming annoying. He even so delicately brushed the crumbs from my table after my salad....nice touch. My meal, with drinking water, was right at $41. It was well worth it. Normally the service here is decent. My best friends and I sat on the patio. Tonight, Friday, June 2 around 9pm-ish; it started out well however towards the end of dinner when I ordered an espresso martini, everything changed. I explained to the bartender/server how I'd liked my martini, he seemed confident that he knew what to to. When I received the drink, it was horrible. I asked for another drink and explained why it wasn't to my liking. So they brought a new drink which was okay. As he brought it to the table i apologized for sending back the first drink. He didn't even acknowledge me and had the most pissy attitude. My best friends and I were all taken aback by his funky little attitude. Quite honestly, he's lucky that I didn't send back the first martini which I requested very dry but tasted as though it had a gallon of vermouth in it. As I can recall, I don't think i have experienced such a pissy attitude from a bartender/server. The bartender/server needs coaching and perhaps classes at the nearest bartending training school. read more

It may be me but the food at this restaurant keeps going downhill. The chefs need to taste what they are serving as everything tastes over salted. As stated in my last review the orzo salad is so salty it is almost inedible. The spinach queso, which is a family favorite, was accompanied by over salted tortilla chips. The Scottish Salmon was cooked well but lacked the depth of a wild caught salmon. The burger was good as usual. Overall, service was good but the food was mediocre and not up to usual standards. Come on J. Alexander...you were my go to restaurant tell your chefs to lighten up on the salt and taste their food before serving. Maybe over the years your recipes have been tweaked for the worse? Awesome. I love this place, it reminds me a little of a chain restaurant my wife very much enjoyed in California called Houston's. The food at J. Alexander's is actually better, considerably better in fact. Service is attentive, but it does sometimes feel rushed and is occasionally inconsistent, not to the point of taking a star away though because the food is ridiculously good for the price. Also, just as a note, it is much more kid friendly than it seems. My 2 yr old loves the sides, especially the mac and cheese, orzo and wild rice, and the vegetables. I've had basically everything on the menu. My wife and I have our standards though. Grilled artichokes are great, although in off-season you can see how much smaller they get, order them in the spring and you'll get nicer ones. Great earthy flavor accentuated by the butter garlic sauce they drizzle on it, brightened by the dill in the remoulade. Excellent. Anything involving the prime rib is spectacular on this menu. We especially like the french dip sandwich which is the prime rib thinly shaved served with the prime rib au jus. I'd order that by the glass if I could, maybe I can (note to self). Can't go wrong with the sides, they are all good, but they usually list a daily vegetable and I pretty much always go with that. Good carrot cake, even better creme brulee. Also, random thought, but I really like the parking here. Spaces are big, it's usually not too full, and almost all the spots are very close to the door. Though our food was properly cooked and flavorful, our service was subpar. Our server, Elizabeth was either having an off night or she just doesn't have enough experience as a food server. She started off well, and she visited our table for drinks and entree orders, but she stopped coming around to check in, and she never bussed our table. She had an opportunity to clear some of our dishes when she dropped off our check, and another after she ran our card and gave us our final bill, but our table was never cleared of dirty dishes and empty glasses. She never returned, and we noticed an error of a beer we hadn't ordered on our check. We waited another 10 minutes for her to return and finally decided to deduct the price of the beer from her tip as we had to leave. We understand the food service industry as my husband and I were both servers (and eventually managers) when we first began our careers, and we believe It's important to let business managers know how they can improve their service and keep their businesses thriving in these challenging times. Hopefully my review will be received respectfully, and our server will be properly trained. Hopefully she was able to have that beer at the end of her shift too. read more

Sad to say, J. Alexander's was one of my fav go-to restaurants in the St. Matts area. Even though you can't call in a to-go order, I am more than happy to wait at the bar and order my food to-go. Tonight, I ordered two salads and the prime rib, a side of bread and another side of fries. They were speedy in the time of bringing me my order, but once I got to my car to leave, I noticed that I should of had more boxes. They forgot my bread and extra fries. I went back in and they hurried my sides and brought them to me and apologized. Not a big deal until I got home and saw that not only were both salads wilted lettuce, but the Southern Salad that I ordered was missing avocado, only had one crouton and a HALF of a cherry tomato. I understand that getting food to-go is not going to be as great as dining in, but the last few times I have dined in, the food was sub-par. Not sure if there is new management since the sign change to "Redlands Grill" or not, just disappointed that I won't be visiting for a while or in that matter any more. read more

J Alexander's is outstanding! I live 2hrs from the nearest location but try to dine here when I'm in the Louisville, KY area if possible. We love the food and the decor. My wife and I were recently thoroughly impressed with the service at this location. Several employees in addition to our server attended to us just because they were attentive and alert. At one point even the manager brought more sauce for my steak simply because he noticed I was running low. Met some family at J Alexander's tonight for dinner and talk. Had a great visit with my brother and sister-in-law! The dinner experience, however, was disappointing. After we left, my wife and I rated this restaurant experience a B- at best. Ordered my ribeye medium and it was rare and tough. But the aus jus and horseradish made it tasty. My smashed potatoes were piled high, but were served cold and had little flavor. The Cole slaw was tasty, but I've had better at Long John Silvers and Lee's Famous Recipe and KFC, etc. My wife's filet mignon was ordered medium and served well-done. Her baked potato was cold and could not have melted butter. But no butter was served nor offered, nor bread. We both left our potatoes mostly untouched. I never got a drink refill. My sister-in-law asked for wasabi with her ahi tuna, but never got it. But I did get the horseradish for my ribeye, after my brother suggested it. And the waitress did bring extra plates and silverware for us to split a dessert. And the carrot cake dessert was very good. So overall the service and kitchen quality were disappointing. At these prices and reputation, we were disappointed and expected better. read more

Probably our favorite restaurant in town for "medium" priced food. The soups are great, the Spinach dip is fantastic, and their salads are really fresh. Sometimes, my husband have "date night" here, and we like sitting and eating at the bar. It's fun, and the bartenders know us and are friendly. Their martinis arrive with a "sidecar" on ice, so it's kind of like getting an extra drink! As a general rule, our family tries to avoid chain restaurants but we heard good things about this place so we figured we should give it a try. We were there twice, once for lunch (without a reservation) and we had to wait 45 minutes or so. The second time we tried to go for dinner on a Saturday evening and despite having made a reservation, we were told it was still at least a half hour wait. I wasn't really upset about it but since we were hungry, we decided to go to our local Korean restaurant instead. The place is nicely decorated and a bit upscale, to the point where I felt a bit underdressed in my usual clothes. Sort of felt like I missed the office memo about having to dress business casual. It's also a big place and a bit noisy, not the sort of place for an intimate dinner I think but perfect for a bit larger of a group. Both times we visited, the restaurant seemed quite busy so they must be doing things right. The highlight of the place is definitely the food (based on our lunch visit impressions). The calamari appetizer was very nice and both my wife and I had pretty good fish tacos. In summary, I would consider coming back here because it was overall a good experience. However, I would come with a group of friends, colleagues or my family, come relatively early and definitely make reservations. read more

We decided to go here for dinner. While it was packed , we had a reservation and were seated very fast. I split the prime rib and filet with another person. The prime rib was phenomenal and although there was fat on it , it didnt feel like a chore to chop it up! The au jus that came with it added a great burst of flavor . The filet was good. We wanted it medium but when it came medium rare , we had to send it back. When it came back it was perfectly cooked but you could really taste the char on filet. Nice looking place. Good place for an evening meal. I had the veggie burger with broccoli soaking in butter & sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. The veggie burger was really good. Mike had the beef burger with shoestring fries. Oh my, the taste of the meat. It was soooo good! Wished I had the beef burger. He asked for ketchup twice, & it was never brought to the table. He said the were fries seasoned deliciously & didn't need the ketchup after all. I wish there was more if a description of food selections on the menu. Eehhhhh.. I'm going 4 stars because the food was good. However, it's more like a 3.5 considering all the factors. Our server was attentive but almost seemed to be trying to hard to be cordial and friendly. My mom ordered one of the worst margaritas I've ever had (basil/mint), the food was good but everything is very pricy. I guess you are paying for the atmosphere but after all it is a chain nonetheless. Prime rib was ordered medium but came out barely warm. However, my dads was medium well and tasted great. The rotisserie chicken was good as well and the deviled eggs were a great app. I probably won't be back due to prices but overall a decent place for a nice date. read more

Upon driving up to this restaurant first impression is nice. I'd never been to this establishment prior to today. The hostess was quick to jump to the door to assist us and hold it open (nearly taking my life) lol. I walk faster than I should I suppose and laughed it off none of this was her fault. Merely my own! She was very sweet. The hostess then asked how many and quickly had us seated. We had a small party of four. Our server quickly had come over and introduced himself "Colton". He was very polite and had no issue repeating himself since two of our party were elderly and couldn't hear anything. I enjoyed that the menu was not overwhelming long. Precise and to the point. I enjoyed the salmon and broccoli and both were cooked to perfection. Colton ensured that everything was to our standards as well as keeping our beverages full at all time. We were all deep into our conversations so he made sure not to impose. This I highly respect! Especially since we were there for two hours in conversation! He did not get impatient with us which I've been a server I probably would have. He then offered dessert of coffee and the cappuccino was served with a stir stick with sugar crystals on the end. Mother's Day 2016: Service: Undermanned, empty tables and long wait lines. We were told 45 minutes wait for seating; it took over an hr. For a group of 4, we were there a total 3 hours to wait and be served! While we were seated, there were empty tables around us, while waiting lines. Food was served room temperature, including the waffles and salad's hard-to-find lettuce. The redeeming aspect was their trademark bottomless iced tea - no quality sacrificed there. $14 Steakburger: Uh, don't expect a luscious fat patty on a beautiful bun. Patty: 1/2"H x 4"D. Bun: 2 each 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" slices of a longer bun. Then bite into it and it lacks flavor. Aaah! cooked to perfect medium pink inside. $13 Waffles, 2each about 6" x 6" waffles and syrup. Nothing extra; nothing to write home about. $16 Southern Salad: food on the bowl rim makes it look bigger than it is; the bowl was only 1" deep and about 6"D. No crisp lettuce. The homemade cornbread croutons were fried, so the nutrition-conscious may need to ask for extra napkins to squeeze out the grease...or substitute. Aaah! The croissant with dripped honey was the best part (of the salad. Really.) Water: FYI, if you want ice in your water, ask for it or it will be served without. I wanted to give this a 4, but the service was average at best. It took 20 minutes to get a beer... oh wait, it took 20 minutes of asking only for us to cancel that and get a different drink. We were a party of 5 and were given 2 glasses of water. Had to ask 4 times for more glasses. The food was good once it finally came, but they forgot our daughters meal.
