I also ordered a glass of wine with my meal which the waiter to forever in bringing. I think I was half done with my meal when I got the wine. The steak was a little on the tough side also. Visiting from out of town and my normal nightly dinner is top sirloin, sweet potato fries and a veggie. With my Airbnb not having an air fryer or grill to cook the steak, I opted to order out. In place of my normal vegetable, I ordered the salad with grilled chicken -- the chicken was there but it was like deli meat chicken ... I was expecting a chicken breast grilled and fresh. Then ordered as my main meal the steak & fries. Steak was cooked medium rare, exactly how I asked but the flavor was god awful -- too salty and bland. Considering I have eaten steak every night since March for dinner I'm very much picky. Highly recommend. We got into town later on a Sunday night and we're able to walk in with no reservation. The staff was friendly an welcoming. We started with a bottle of wine and the deviled eggs. They were very good. They had a sweetness to them that was unexpected. We then had the ahi and prime rib. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. We ended with the carrot cake that we took home. I later enjoyed it with coffee. It wasn't too sweet. The whole meal was wonderful. The restaurant was dimly lit and cozy feeling. First visit and I truly enjoyed every aspect. First of all, our waiter was so nice, outgoing, friendly, and very familiar with the menu and had great advice based on our likes. He suggested the stuffed avocado with seafood. It's more of an appetizer but can be a meal. It was so delicious. if you like sushi you will love this. It is very similar but without the rice. This is a definitely repeat meal. To accompany the meal I had a mijito. It was so refreshing and delicious! The restaurant is nice, spacious and all around nice. I ordered the Cesar salad, steak subbed the fries for broccoli and the crab cakes. No price listed for the crab cakes but they were 39.99. Food was hot and fresh. Plenty of leftovers to enjoy them the next day. I hadn't had fries for six months but decided on this place because of the pic on yelp of the shoe string fries. I was looking forward to having my birthday celebration at J. Alexander's for a party of 16 - 20, however, they only take reservations for a party of 4 or less. Even with weeks of advanced notice, parties larger than 4 are limited to just walk-in, and wait-and-see without a guarantee of sitting together or sitting on the same side of the restaurant. Very, Very disappointing! Unfortunately I have to rate J. Alexander's a 1 star in service. Most restaurants would prefer a reservation for large parties. read more

My brother invited me to eat here for my birthday lunch (we started this years ago when I got transferred to San Antonio). He was unaware of my starting the Keto diet. I had not been here in years and was worried about being able to stay on my diet. I need not have worried. We were greeted promptly and taken immediately to our table. Drinks came out quickly, and then it was time to order. I had my mind made up on a particular salad, but it came with fried chicken strips (which I can't have). The waiter said they could change that to grilled chicken, and I was sold. Lunch was quickly served and was very tasty. Our waiter was very attentive and never let our drinks get less than half full. Love this place. Don't know why my wife and I don't come more often, but it's why way of chance become our marriage spot. We came for the first time after taking engagement photos and have come on our wedding anniversary. Service is always great and the atmosphere is warm and intimate for being a larger multi-tier dining room. The food offerings are fresh and exploding with flavor. I've had meats, salads, appetizers, desserts, beers and wines. All fantastic. What is one to do when a favorite restaurant is no longer in their city to celebrate an anniversary and COVID19 is at the forefront of every decision to be made? Well , we drove almost 3 hours from Houston to San Antonio just to eat at our all time favorite restaurant. We made online reservations a few days prior to the big day and received several reminder texts to confirm. The location was a little difficult to find when trying to follow our GPS, but a simple call to the restaurant and a very patient employee guided us right to the front door. Heads up for those going and are not from San Antonio, it's in the shopping strip and faces 281 The attentive greeting at the door was just as I had remembered it was when they were in Houston. Everyone had on a mask and so did we. We were immediately escorted to our table. In response to COVID19, they seated parties in every other booth to adhere to social distancing which was very much appreciated by me. After all, this was our first sit down restaurant experience since the start of COVID19. There's a barcode on the table to access the menu. So, again it reduced my initial stress about eating in a restaurant. Moving on to the food because that's the highlight of J. Alexander's in my opinion . SPECTACULAR is the word that comes to mind that describes the quality, quantity , and quintessential flavors that I experienced in every single morsel I devoured. We started with the spinach queso dip with chips and if I wasn't concerned with proper etiquette, I would have taken my finger to clean the bowl. Yummy! I ordered my ultimate favorite steak in the whole wide world , which is the Steak Maui medium well. Not many restaurants can master medium well for me with not too rare and definitely not too well done, but J. Alexander's is the G.O.A.T! The steak was so juicy and loaded with flavor it conjured up moans of satisfaction in every bite from me. Instead of the mountainous pile of smashed potatoes, I ordered steamed broccoli and it was delicious! My Bae ordered the pasta dish with chicken and we shared the house salad. There was no way we could eat all of the food as the portions were bountiful, so we took half back to the hotel. Of course we topped off the anniversary meal with a shared serving of their VERY Best Chocolate Cake w/Vanilla Ice Cream. OMG! It was so moist, silky , and downright scrumptious! I really wish they would add my favorite food (Steak Maui and Key Lime Pie) items to their new sister restaurant in Houston because a girl shouldn't have to drive almost 3 hours just to take pleasure in eating the best food on the planet! read more

We met up for a late dinner and even though we arrived at 8:30 the place was hopping! We were seated quickly and the place was clean, the staff in full protective gear and they all displayed proper Covid protocol! I ordered the seared ahi tuna salad and a lemon drop cocktail. The cocktail was perfect- just enough lemon and mint...and alcohol. The seared ahi was perfection! The salad was served with wasabi and ginger which complimented the whole flavor direction of the salad. I was served a second portion of tuna because they felt said the tuna I had was over seared! The last time, my wife ordered a steak Brazzo , medium. It was rare. She gave it another chance and it came back well done. This time, I ordered a filet medium and it was medium well and tough. Hmmm. We used to live in Denver and this was one of our favorite spots. Every time that we travel and see a J Alexander's, we have to stop. Today's visit to San Antonio was no different. We had reservations hut needed to wait a short period upon arrival. We ordered drinks at the bar while waiting only to never receive them. Service was extremely delayed. We had late reservations, 8 pm, so I don't understand why everything took so long. The Alex salad was great once it arrived. I ordered the cilantro shrimp with heirlooms tomatoes. Fabulous! Hubby ordered the Maui ribeye and only ate a few bites. The flavor was as expected but it was tough as all get out. Surprising for medium rare. The loaded baked potato was not loaded at all. Our server, Mia, quickly resolved the issue and all was well. We opted not to have dessert based on the slow service all night. Disappointed by the experience for sure but will wait for our next adventure in a new town. read more

Great establishment in the Quarry Market in San Antonio. The restaurant was very clean & the decor shouted "classic steakhouse." Our server was nice enough, but it was his second day in the restaurant so it was a little shaky. He spilled water on the table, didn't really know the drinks menu & was kind of just all over the place. That didn't really deter us from the good eats! NY Strip was supposedly 16 oz [$34], but it was lot bigger than that! It came with cheesy, gooey macaroni & cheese. Both were very delicious, the steak was cooked perfectly. Loved every bite, but couldn't finish due to the thick cut! Also tasted their Filet Mignon [$33] with bearnaise & baked potato. The baked potato was huge--with all the fixin's! The Filet was very well cooked & melt in your mouth meat. Shared the chocolate molten cake w/ice cream, can't go wrong with chocolate and ice cream. Date night with the hubby and we chose to come here. First time and I can't wait to go back. First of all, Bella was our waitress and she was fantastic! We ordered artichokes for our app. YUM! My hubby ordered the NY Strip. It came with the Mac and cheese. Both were amazing and the Mac and cheese was to die for. I'm a huge Mac and cheese fan. I had the cilantro shrimp with broccoli. Was visiting my lil' sister and nephew in San Antonio and we were going to hit up Joe's Crab Shack, but it was gone. So we sat in the parking lot awhile trying to figure out where to go. Since J. Alexander's was close, we decided to try it. Thank goodness we did. Everyone was very happy with what they ordered! My sister ordered redfish, I ordered prime rib and my nephew ordered a hamburger. We ordered a roasted artichoke appetizer - it was fantastic!!! Though know how to eat one - we taught my nephew how to If you order wine with your meal - you get a big, breathable glass (half) full of it! Our server was Mykensie. She is clairvoyant! Because artichokes can be messy, she brought over some heated, moist napkins. When we even thought that our drinks might be getting low, new drinks appeared. This level of service almost makes me cry, it's so fantastic, rare and special. I've tried prime rib in a lot of restaurants - and honestly, I had almost given up on finding any like the one I had many (MANY) years ago in Charlottesville, Virginia. Truth be told, I had lowered my standards because none measured up to the decades-old memories of traveling 4 hours with a group of friends to try the best prime rib...I ordered the 12 oz, but should've gone with the 16 oz... Because, it was fork tender, perfectly seasoned (NOT TOO MUCH!!!) and thick! A tiny bit of fat. It was almost painful to share small fork-bites with two of the people I love most in the world...yeah, that's how good it is. And then Archie, the Manager stopped by. He had heard that it was our first-time visiting J. Alexander's so dessert would be on him. "Good deal," I thought. A big piece of chocolate cake and ice cream drizzled in hot chocolate syrup showed up... Then, a cheesecake sitting on raspberry sauce with white chocolate sticks, then key lime pie, and then carrot cake. The carrot cake won. Order any dessert - they're all good. Now here's the thing about Archie - an elderly patron took a spill right near her table opposite ours before we could do anything - he was there immediately. He made sure she was ok, and it took some time for her to get back up. His care and concern filter down to every employee in that restaurant, you can feel it.
