The ambiance is so chill, relaxing, low lighting and sound perfect for dates. Beautiful and clean, hostesses and waitresses were very friendly too. Service was speedy and food was hot and delicious! We read the prime rib was good and we'd never tried it before. They accommodated our picky appetites and got both of our steaks halved so we could easily have half of each (prime rib & ribeye). Btw, the ribeye that's not "Hawaiian" is not listed but is available , just ask. It's SO DELICIOUS. I wasn't a fan of the prime rib but that's a me problem, not a JA problem. My fiancé loved it. Everything was cooked to perfection. The NYO Mac and cheese was the perfect side. We added a side of fries to share and it was humongous as you can see from pics- not sure if that was an extra charge for such a huge side but we didn't need that much and couldn't finish them lol ! Celebrated 2 occasions Valentine's Day and My sons birthday. He requested a steak dinner. We arrived at the restaurant at 4pm. Since it was a holiday we figured we beat the dinner crowd. Table of 4 was readily available. The ambiance was definitely a vibe. Restaurant was clean and the staff was attentive and friendly. We made it through service without a hitch! Started off with the Deviled Eggs and Spinach Queso accompanied by a pico de gallo. Delicious! The queso was piping hot, chips were thin and crispy. The deviled eggs were a hit with my family. They were a combination of smoky sweet and savory flavor. I prefer the filling a bit Creamier but still a flavorful appetizer. They came in a order of 6. We also shared 2 Caesar salads. Serving was definitely large enough. Lettuce was crisp and chilled,lightly coated dressing and house made croutons. I had the soup of the day, chicken pasta soup. Very creamy broth and filled with bite size veggies. I was able to identify mushrooms, carrots, celery, green beans, bits of chicken and pasta. I asked for a side of bread or crackers. I was given a plate of 4 slices of very fresh sourdough bread and 2 pads of butter with herbs. Really enjoyed it. Hubby had a steak burger which I read on menu that the steak is ground up daily. The burger was definitely juicy and beautifully cooked to perfection. We asked for fries to be extra crispy and they delivered. My son had steak and fries. Now we asked for medium and it did come back more on the well side. However, there is a disclaimer that some marinated meats might come out that way. Nevertheless it was tender, juicy and full of flavor. My daughter ordered the cilantro shrimp. The portion is huge! A grilled shrimp skewer over a bed of rice with a heaping side of coleslaw. We also enjoyed a princess duchess cocktail. Not sure if it's on regular menu but it was a fragrant sparkling cocktail. Very cute and dainty. I would say 3.5. My wife and I wanted a place that had prime rib and we remembered we had been there a few years ago and they had it so we tried it out. We arrived early and had a couple of drinks at the bar. 13$ each for a bourbon and coke. We were seated and Meredith was our server. She did a fantastic job and was very attentive, talkative and informative. We had the fish dip appetizer and it was good. The caesar salad was ok but I prefer mine with more zing to it. Kind of dull. The prime rib cooked perfectly, but taste wise was just ok. I have had better. The horse radish and au jus were diluted down and not a lot of flavor. The smashed potatoes were really, really good. I guess I was expecting a good steak house but it turned out to just be meh. I ordered the steak fries which is a classic and of course medium rare, that was not the case (a full fledged medium for sure) fries were good but would have been better if they were doubled fried. The bartender was awesome, she was very attentive and quick to help everyone truly big props (wish I remembered her name). Ambiance was a great place if you like to yell to talk and point to get what you want. Not a fan. Overall might be for some but for what one pays you expect better. read more

I'll preface by saying it was Tuesday night (election day) and around 7:30, so not very busy: we were a party of 4, one who was walking with a cane. The hostess offered us a booth but we asked for a table, so rather than putting us at the larger table in that area, she took us further into the restaurant, up a few stairs and sat us at a 4-top. Fine, but why? The restaurant was VERY dark. We all ordered the same thing: prime rib sandwich. It was not hot. And very tough, hard to eat without looking like an animal. The French fries were good. The waiter was very friendly and attentive. Although he did forget to bring one of the desserts, but that was probably for the best. The older I get the more I dislike restaurants where you need a flashlight to see the menu. It's ok to go up a notch in the lightbulb wattage without ruining the ambiance. If you have vision problems, you've been warned. Anyway, service was great as usual. Food was good, but mine wasn't anything to brag about. I ordered the prime rib and it lacked flavor, way too bland for my taste buds. It was also served slightly under room temperature which is not cool since this is a fatty cut of meat. They were also stingy on the serving size of the broccoli, needless to say I was still hungry. I cannot write this review with mentioning the roasted chicken. It is the best roasted chicken I've tasted. So succulent and flavorful and paired with the amazing orzo pasta... Good Grief!!! This is the second time I have been here - the last time was about 10 years ago. The service is great, and the place is pretty swank. But the food just isn't that great and definitely not worth the price. I had the Steak Brazzo; chopped up pieces of marinated filet mignon mushrooms covered in a brown Madeira wine sauce with "Smashed Potatoes." The steak left a lot to be desired; the meat was just so-so, and the Madeira sauce was really just like a bland brown gravy. The "Smashed Potatoes" were good - a huge serving of mashed potatoes and carbs with some tater skins and grated parmesan cheese mixed in. This little gem was $29, and I can honestly say I have had much better steak at Texas Roadhouse and Saltgrass - seriously (and for a few dollars less). And the service is just as good at each of these establishments. The bar scene was cool - we hung out there for a while we waited to be seated - draft beer was $6.50 - ouch! Sorry J. This is our go to regular restaurant for lunch and dinner. Menu is not extensive but their recipes are solid and the kitchen usually hits the mark. The service is always above average but sometimes annoying as inexperienced wait staff will interrupt a conversation to ask you "How is everything?" instead of reading the table. I wish they had lower waiter turnover as I rarely get waited on by the same server although they share the service delivery duties which means you are always getting your food promptly and hot! For my birthday, we enjoyed awesome prime rib. the service was great and we were seated on time for our reservation. A thunderstorm arrived as we were exiting withe the rain very heavy. my wife uses a walker and I use a cane. My son pulled our vehicle up close to the entrance and the girls up front obtained a large umbrella and first took my wife to the car, returned to escort my daughter in law and finally myself to the vehicle. The help was greatly appreciated and kept us from getting totally soaked. For my entree, I had the Asian ahi tuna salad. The ahi tuna was very good. It is served with a salad that is primarily lettuce and fried wonton strips. The flavor of the dressing was quite good, but I'd say there was a 50/50 ratio between the fried strips and lettuce. I'd prefer more greens and fewer fried strips. It is pretty pricey here. This was my my first visit to San Antonio's J. Alexander's. First off walking in I was immediately greeted by two really nice hostess. They knew about our large party coming in and invited me to hang out at the bar. The bar area is small with nice comfy chairs and our drink Orders were taken right away. I ordered the Lemon drop and it was delicious and strong I only had one and it did its job. If I was not driving I would have had more . We were seated shortly after arriving. Our server Katherine was really attentive and patient with our large group . I ordered the steak and fries . My steak was cooked perfectly and the food came out nice and hot. Went here with a large party of 14 and wish they took reservations for large groups we had to sit at two round tables. Mostly our group enjoyed their food while my experience was not the best. The waitress we had was nice there is a lot I can say about my experience here but I will say I was not satisfied. I was willing to pay for my food because I did not want to be problematic but the waitress said since my order didn't come out right the second they did not have a check for me. My wife and I had one of the best waitresses in any establishment in many, many months (Julissa) she made some excellent suggestions on seafood where I had the hake and my wife enjoyed the prime rib. I tried some of hers, and It was the best prime rib I have had in over a decade if not ever. Their calamari is a smash hit as well. While the grilled artichoke's we were. not a fan of, our waitress made sure we were happy and had it taken off the bill. If you have dessert here make sure you try the carrot cake. We had our 9m little boy with us and after he decided it was his turn to eat and not ours, the staff asked if they could replace our appetizer with a hot one since we were tending to him.
