From the specials menu...steak filet, crab cake and mashed potatoes

Always love eating here...the servers are fantastic and welcoming! The salads are huge and shareable. If you're sharing, they'll even split it for you before they bring them out. This trip we shared a wedge salad and my husband got his usual, which is the cheeseburger with no bun and fries. Always good and their seasoning shows off the yummy flavor of the patty. I tried something of the specials menu...steak fillet, crab cake and mashed potatoes. It was all delicious and I think the crab cake was one of the best I've ever had...nice chunks of crab and a yummy remoulade for dipping. They also have several large round tables to accommodate bigger groups.

Fist time at J Alexander's really nice restaurant in the Catera area. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich with fries. The sandwich was really good with the right amount of spicy.

Service is fantastic, cocktails are well made and done right! The prime rib was a bit too salty for my wife's taste. My sirloin was average. The wedge salad was excellent and the carrot cake is the best ever!

I wish I could give this place 6 stars! My wife and I decided to have a date night and try J. Alexander's and I can't believe we haven't been here before. First, the server was absolutely amazing. She was kine, funny and she made sure we had everything we needed the whole time. I finished my water once... And she came by 15 seconds later for a refill. And she apologized. She was so attentive. The food was also pretty awesome. I had the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, my wife had sea food pasta. My chicken was so good. I haven't had chicken like that in forever. We finished it off with the chocolate cake. Thankfully, our server warned is that the portions were huge, because we almost ordered too. One was more than enough.

Great service, good food quality, classy atmosphere and drinks! Great place to celebrate special occasions or just a spontaneous dinner night out. Always a solid dining choice for the area.

We made a 6:15 pm reservation on a Saturday to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy, but not loud. We could talk comfortably at a normal volume, which already put this place ahead of a lot of spots on a weekend night. Service set the tone immediately. Our server, Mario, was excellent. Kind, professional, attentive without hovering, and his recommendations were spot on. On top of that, the entire staff signed an anniversary card for us, which was a genuinely thoughtful touch. The manager, whose name I unfortunately did not catch, stopped by our table, congratulated us, and treated us to a dessert and two glasses of champagne on the house. That kind of hospitality is rare and it mattered. We started with the deviled eggs. They were overfilled in the best way and topped with maple bacon that complemented them perfectly. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. It was not overly creamy, had small chunks of clam, and was well seasoned. All it needed was a little black pepper, which is an easy fix. For entrées, my wife ordered the redfish and I had the Maui steak. The redfish was fresh and cooked perfectly, not dry at all, finished with a light lemony butter sauce. The couscous was properly cooked and well seasoned, not bland, and the asparagus had a subtle grilled, almost barbecue-like flavor that worked really well. My Maui steak was a 16-ounce boneless ribeye in a tangy marinade with hints of garlic and pineapple. The balance was excellent. Tender, juicy, and cooked a true medium rare. It came with smashed potatoes that were creamy and smooth without being thick or dry. Exactly how they should be. Dessert sealed it. The carrot cake was outstanding. Warm, soft, moist, not overly sweet, with fine shreds of carrot and nuts throughout. Honestly, it is arguably the best carrot cake I have ever had. Overall, this was a great experience. Service was top-notch. The manager makes regular rounds to check on tables, which shows real leadership. There are cards at the front listing the manager, assistant manager, and chefs by name, which signals pride and accountability. The only downside is the interior lighting. It is slightly dim and takes a moment for your eyes to adjust. That said, the staff more than makes up for it with warmth and professionalism. Big thanks to the entire team, and congrats to Mario on his engagement. We will absolutely be back.

Longtime lover of J Alexander's!! But the basse location is the only one I frequent. First time at this location. The vibe is very different. I feel like I am eating at a budget hotel restaurant lounge. Food was good. But the shrimp even seemed different at this location from the other. Service was great. I can't knock them for that. I don't know. Maybe just not for me. Go try for yourself.

Visited J Alexander's for the first time and it did not disappoint. We were greeted warmly and promptly, then seated immediately. We had reservations so I'm sure that helped. It's a beautiful establishment with soft lighting and lots of natural light as well. The fully stocked bar was a few feet away from dining area which was perfect so as to not hear what ever was on TV during dinner. Our server was friendly and quite efficient as he shared some of his favorites on the menu. We started with cocktails and a spinach dip appetizer. The cocktails were refreshing and the dip was delicious. Our entrees included a steak w/ smashed potatoes which was juicy and delicious. The other entree was a seafood pasta that included shrimp, crab and scallops. The pasta was creamy and had a little kick to it which elevated the taste. We ended with a generous portion of Key Lime pie. It was devine. The crust itself was to die for. Can't wait to visit again.

    Dirty Martini. Delicious.

Amazing atmosphere and exceptionally professional staff. We were lucky to have Marlysa taking care of us , she went above and beyond to make my wife feel truly special on her birthday. A particularly memorable touch was when the chef personally came to our table to wish her a happy birthday. That level of attention really stood out. We'll definitely be back.

    STEAK MAUI

Heard lots of good things about steak maui! Wanted to give it a try. I must say that we definitely underestimated the portions. It was huge! It kind of had a barbecue flavored sauce, which I didn't really enjoy. Other than that, service was amazing. It was an enjoyable dining experience!

Disfrutamos un maravilloso tiempo en J. Alexander's , San Antonio, maravilloso restaurant, excelente atención, deliciosa, comida especial compañía! Recomendamos ampliamente este restaurante definitivamente es un lugar para volver!

Our first experience at J Alexander's was not at all what we were expecting. The restaurant was beautiful. We had a wonderful server who made the most delicious martini I have had. Sadly everything that came out of the kitchen was a huge disappointment. Caesar salad had potential to be great but way too heavy on the anchovies. The Maui steak was a disaster. Not once but twice it arrived at our table looking like it had been microwaved. Management apologized but the disaster was clear to us all. We may try again and order very basic items.

What kind of dress code? Before I had read no phone zone but can't seem to find. I thought a finer dining establishment.

Business casual to dress-up is the best fit. Sure there are people in shorts and t-shirts but this is a finer-dining establishment.

    Is there outdoor seating?

Currently, no; But I did talk to management about it and it is something they want to install.

Once we arrive at the restaurant we were greeted like VIPs. We were asked a few times if we were there for a special occasion and I mentioned we were there for our anniversary. We were congratulated and that was it. No other "special" treatment or offers because it was our anniversary. The service, the food, and the overall atmosphere were great. No complaints at all. My only issue was this, as we were preparing to pay the bill, a couple (white couple) was seated next to us and they were asked if they were there to celebrate a special occasion, and she said, "it's our anniversary" and the waiter then offered them a complimentary bottle (or glasses) of champagne! Wait, what??? I thought to myself, nobody offered us (a black couple) any complimentary champagne. A different person came to the table to take my credit card and I asked him about it. He did apologize and offered to bring us a couple of glasses of champagne but it was too late. We were done eating/celebrating and it was time to go home. I was 3 weeks from recovering from heart surgery and this was my first time out in the public to eat since my surgery and I didn't want to let not getting a bottle or glass of champagne ruin my evening with my Queen. This incident it want led me to giving 4 stars instead of 5. How can one couple be offered complimentary champagne and another couple not offered any at all???

They recently received a Bib Gourmand from Michelin for good quality and value. Frankly I think they deserve a star, but that's just me. But at my age anytime you are over ground is the best occasion. I have heard it is real fancy. And it is. Do not come in Crocs and sweatpants. This is not that restaurant. It is that restaurant where you should make reservations. It is also a place that emphasizes presentation and service. We came right when it opened and we informed the hostess of our reservations. We were seated in the bar area. Once inside I was struck by its ambience. It is sleek, dark and dare say "sexy." Our server, who was extremely attentive came to our table and took our drink orders. My partner ordered an Old Fashioned and me, a Lagunitas IPA. Whilst waiting for our drinks I looked over the room. One thing I noticed was a barrier that separated the bar area and the dining room. The Social Hour is meant, to socialize. I saw couples leaning into each other. Another group were drinking martinis with a seafood tower, almost touching the ceiling. Conversations were had. Romantic glances were exchanged. It isn't a casual place like Bubba's 33 nor Texas Roadhouse. It feels like a place best suited for a date night or an anniversary. I'm wondering how the dining room area is? The Social Hour does offer some drink and small bites specials. We ordered the kabob with pineapple, brussel sprouts, and sliders. They were all pretty great. It reminded me of the same experience as in partaking in tapas. I would remiss if I didn't relay our service here, it was excellent. Our server, Holiday(I hope I spelled it right.) treated us like we were the only patrons there. I've gone to upscale restaurants where staff looks at you up and down. Or they try to size you up. This is not that place. Which was so refreshing. If this place went above and beyond my expectations why didn't I give it four stars? In my opinion I think that a place that creates an upscale experience needs to have a few beers on tap. Even places like Wing Daddy's or Chili's offers a few beers on tap. Secondly, the bar area seating feels a bit tight. I wonder when the dinner crowd arrives would you be in the lap, of someone else's conversation? I still highly recommend this place. The Social Hour area is perfect for a date or an anniversary. The service and food were both excellent. And I've never been to a place where you are given warm hand towels. It reminded me of that scene with Adam Sandler in "The Wedding Singer" minus Billy Idol.

For 73 years, The Barn Door has been more than a great restaurant; it has been an inexorable piece of San Antonio history. Last week, The Barn Door announced on Facebook that its final day of service will be Sunday, May 11th (Mother's Day). The Barn Door has been an outstanding steakhouse in the truest sense. They've never relied on gimmicks or culinary trends--they've relied on the tried-and-true flavors that have maintained a loyal clientele for decades. I'm taking about hand-cut, primal cuts of beef grilled over real mesquite, delivering that unmistakable South Texas char. I'm referring to plump, wild-caught shrimp from the Gulf Coast, the famous yeast rolls, and tubs of homemade salad dressings. If you've been there, you know how special the overall experience has been. I've read many heartfelt comments on social media asking why such a successful institution would cease operations. Well, dear reader, I have a unique insight into why. Randy Stokes has poured his heart into the restaurant, but he merely leases the building--not the land--from the Straus family. Approximately seven months ago, Mr. Straus decided to sell the dirt beneath the "Barn" to a real estate developer. The plan? To raze this historic site and erect modern condos. It's a familiar story of urban expansion, but it doesn't make the loss any easier to swallow. But before we close the door on "The Barn" forever, a glimmer of hope looms on the horizon. Randy Stokes and his team aren't necessarily hanging up their aprons for good. According to a reliable anonymous source, the team has expressed a desire to reopen The Barn Door at a new location, with eyes set currently on the city's North Side. I hope the promise of a new location comes to fruition, but even if The Barn Door closes forever, I will cherish all the wonderful memories of dining there with my parents and grandparents over the years. I will remember the ingratiating staff, the unique ambience, and the hundreds of delicious meals I've crammed down my gullet.

It's a sketchy area to walk behind the restaurant to the Speakeasy. Anyhow, I ordered the chicken fried ribeye, jalapeño twice baked potato. Now, the potato was great. I didn't care for the ribeye and didn't eat it. The salad was right out of the bag. Iceberg, shredded carrots and cabbage with 5 bagged croutons. What happened? It wasn't like that before. My cream spinach came out late, and we weren't charged for it, which was nice. My brother in laws filet was too done. He asked for medium, and it was medium well. He ate it anyway. They used to have a 6oz ladies filet, but they don't. The server wasn't perfect, but we lived. IF I return, I'll skip the salad, get the filet and potato.
