Me and my wife recently celebrated our birthdays there and WOW! The staff are extremely nice and professional! They had a message waiting for us at our table wishing us a happy birthday and even gave is a delicious slice of chocolate cake on the house. I had the 18oz. Cowboy ribeye. It was cooked/ seasoned PERFECTLY and had a nice crust from the wood fired grill (which is how steak should be cooked). My wife had the surf and turf and enjoyed it just as well. She specifically said that the lobster was cooked perfectly which has been an issue at other places. The only thing I was slightly let down by was the whiskey sour, which was average. Wow, how our worlds and lives have changed since I was last at Gilbert's just about one year ago, celebrating a great new job, with my family. While that opportunity only lasted a few short months due to COVID, and no longer able to enjoy Gilbert's as frequent as before, my friends and I celebrated the Chiefs second Super Bowl trip with the Arrowhead strip this evening. Both of my friends had never experienced Gilbert's before, and we got our order to go. Wow, Wow, and WOW--what a treat. Everything, and I mean everything, was on point. Separate containers for just the baked potato toppings was a very nice touch, as was the blueberry compote for the cheesecake. Admittedly, two of us are A1 guys, and for the first time, in a long time, it would seem a sin to put anything other than truffles on top of this cut! It was so nice to share a special meal with special friends, especially in anticipation of another Super Bowl this coming Sunday. The Arrowhead on the strip was the best, and we agreed to this dinner back during Training Camp if the Chiefs were able to "Run it Back." To see my friends enjoy such an amazing meal was almost as great as the steak--almost! :-) Now, we look forward to the next time we can enjoy Gilbert's again. So instead of going to Capital Grille or any other typical choice for a steakhouse...my party of 3 decided to go here for Restaurant Week to change it up a bit. I booked our dinner for 7pm on a Friday night and I was pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately despite the place being super packed! Our waitress was the cutest! haha she was so nice and she had the cutest European accent. She came out with the most delicious appetizer bread I've ever had. haha I was quite hungry prior to going there...so...my opinion might have been a little skewed for the bread to taste extraordinary... Anyway....here is what I ordered from the Restaurant Week Menu: Lobster Bisque: it came out in a big bowl with some fresh crab in the center. I was like...where's the soup? LOL my inner blonde self came out...thankfully the waitress came and poured the soup on top of the crab and filled up my bowl. My goodness was it delicious. It was so savory, but not too potent with that fishy taste. It was cooked just right. The big bowl was decieving with it's portion, because I was craving for more! Seared Scallops with Lobster Risotto: ahhh the STAR of the meal. The scallops were cooked to perfection. Perfectly seared. I loved the risotto, it was rich in flavor. My only regrets with it was that it was too small. Again I was complaining about the small portion. Creme Brulee: My friends complained about how "Egg-y" it tasted, like it was more of a scrambled egg dessert...but personally I LOVED IT. I maybe a bit biased because I can eat eggs all day errrr'day! So yummy and not too sweet. I always criticized the place in my head for having such small portions, but to be honest my gluttonous self didn't realize that I in fact was full at the end and that it was my fat inner self saying it wasn't enough when it in fact was the perfect proportions for dinner! Definitely will come back for the STEAK! I tasted my BFF's dish and her STEAK WAS...DARE I SAY IT....BETTER THAN CAPITAL GRILLE! We did return this past Sunday for a late-evening dinner and we had a lovely experience. We chose J. Gilbert's to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary - what an excellent choice! First, we MUST send our "thanks" to our waiter, Marco...He was phenomenal. As a waiter, he is top-notch. He was prompt with visits to the table, timely with a bottle of wine, very well-versed in the menu, took great notes when taking our specific orders and special requests, made eye-contact, honored all the waiter-etiquette that once could ever hope for, never let drinks or glasses run dry, was perfectly attentive without being overbearing, the list continues. He made sure the entire experience was an 11+ on a scale of 1-10. Most excellent - thanks, Marco! At the conclusion of the meal, the manager / assistant manager (Adam, maybe?) did make it a point to stop-by and visit with our table. He was professional, courteous and accommodating. We did appreciate his "hello". The food was fantastic. I ordered the 1/2 chicken breast with a baked potato substituting the roasted potatoes with asparagus. Chicken was perfectly cooked, the baked potato was served warm and the asparagus was delightful. My spouse ordered the ribs which were out-of-this world! So pleased! Presentation was delightful! J. Gilbert's is such an amazing staple of the KC Metro and a guaranteed "good experience" that we are happy to recommend. It's been a long time since I've gotten steak at a restaurant let alone gone to a legit steakhouse. During my time here in Kansas, I wanted to checkout a Midwest steakhouse as the beef out here is supposedly better than in the northeast. I did my research and J.Gilbert's seemed to be the best choice for where I'm staying. To sum up this spot, it's really good but not blow you away good. To start off, I got some house bread with peppered butter. I usually don't talk about bread and butter in my yelp reviews because those are usually an after thought. However, the peppered butter was so delicious that I can't forget to mention it. For my order, I decided to do the prix fix menu which included a starter, main & dessert for $58 which in my opinion is pretty good for an establishment like this. I decided on the crab bisque which I was a little apprehensive about since we are in the Midwest and not on the east coast where I eat a fair amount of crab. Luckily I took the leap because the bisque was on point. It had the perfect amount of crab with bits in every single bite. The flavor hit the nail on the head as well and it had a slow heat that wasn't too overpowering, just right! Now onto the main dish...what makes a steakhouse a steakhouse...the steak. And to be honest I was slightly disappointed. Now don't get me wrong, you're not finding this quality of steak in most places. However, when Brady R is looking for a top rated joint & this is the spot people rave about, the steak better blow my face off. Unfortunately I asked for my Kansas City strip (basically a NY strip) medium rare and the steak came out more overcooked on the medium side. The flavor of the steak was nice but nothing to shout from the mountain tops about. The sides actually enhanced the dish. Both the creamed corn with bacon & poblano au gratin potatoes were a nice accoutrement to the steak as they were savory with complex flavors that worked nicely together. To finish off my night out, I ordered the seven layer coconut cake and it was just okay. I can see the appeal of it to many people but the passion fruit coulis was not my speed at all. The actual cake was moist, not too dense and had the right amount of coconut to cake ratio. Overall, this place is good for more of an expensive date night if money is no object. If you're looking for an unbelievable steak, look elsewhere. On a final side note, a huge pet peeve of mine is when an expensive restaurant asks to see my ID for ordering a drink. I know it's the law and blah blah blah but I find it insulting when I'm about to drop over $150 that they ask to see my ID. I love J Gilbert's! If you are looking for a great steak in Kansas City, look no further. The food at J Gilbert's is consistently outstanding no matter what you order. I've had both steak and seafood here and my entrees are always perfectly cooked and seasoned. The wine and liquor selection here is fantastic as well. They carry a local Pinot Noir called Barrel Burner that I highly recommend. I'm not normally a red wine drinker, but I like this one so much I choose it over white wine on any menu I see it on. Finest quality in steaks. Far more pricey than the average restaurant. However, not only are you getting your money's worth, but the ambiance and service were exceptional. My son and I ordered the porterhouse, they were cooked to perfection. His sides were creamed corn with bacon and Yukon gold mashed potatoes. My sides were sautéed spinach and Yukon gold mashed potatoes. My wife enjoyed the 6 ounce filet mignon with seared sea scallops. Her sides were asparagus and a wedge salad. We each enjoyed a fragrant glass of wine. We made our reservations a few days ago and had no wait for our table. This is the steakhouse I have been looking for since I landed in KC! Had a cowboy ribeye here that was outstanding. It was cooked exactly how I asked and was so so tasty. I also recommend the lobster mac n cheese (which can be hit or miss but I think this one is good). J Gilberts also has a great happy hour with $3 lobster claws and other tasty bites for a reasonable price. Also, their baked bread is incredible. J Gilbert's has some very high quality food and drinks and the service is always exceptional. From the timing to the friendliness, the waiters here are doing a bang up job. I really love the bleu cheese appetizer with chips, I can't think of the name right now but you can definitely find it based off the appetizer descriptions. They also made the best dirty martini I've ever had. I asked for it to be made with Tito's, and I have honestly searched for a martini as good as that one at other places and it's just not the same. Could be the quality of the rest of the ingredients in the drink; the vermouth, the olives, and olive juice. I highly recommend trying this place out! read more

I have to say, their steak was astounding! I took my girlfriend here for her birthday, and she absolutely loved it! I ordered the cowboy cut ribeye while she got the fillet, and they were cooked to perfection! One of the few places where they actually cook the steaks the way you ask them too (aka rare, medium, etc..). Mine came with sides of sautéed spinach and this cheesy potato side (sadly forgot the name of) and hers came with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus! Everything was gorgeous and delicious! Couldn't finish everything so took the rest to go, and steak was still amazing the next day! Really recommend this place! Oh I can't forget the dessert! This is not a place I would have chosen, but I am very glad that he did. First, the greeting, seating, and service was impeccable. We had to wait for our bread only a little bit, because the sourdough bread was just finishing baking, and it was wonderful, served with a choice of whipped butter or roasted pepper butter. Both were excellent. He ordered the lobster bisque, and the presentation was a highlight. The soup platter was placed in front of him containing the shredded lobster topped by herbs. Then, the bisque was poured by the waitstaff around and over the lobster. Lovely presentation, and delicious soup. (I know, because I dipped my sourdough in several times.) He ordered a Kansas City strip with asparagus and lobster mac and cheese. I ordered the 4 oz filet with four scallops, sautéed spinach, and fire roasted asparagus. My filet was, without a doubt, one of the best I've ever had. They do know their beef! And from the first taste of the asparagus, I could taste the sear. It was wonderful. The spinach did fulfill my daily quota of EVOO (and then some), but it was a large portion, and I felt duly virtuous. His strip was just as he likes it, and he enjoyed the asparagus. He didn't think the mac and cheese was worth the up charge, as it seemed to be a large plate of just that, with hidden lobster. No worries, as he wasn't able to finish anyway. Let me begin the atmosphere was nice, but music was to loud. Their Mochetto Mascato was absolutely delicious! It had just the right amount of sweet and fresh taste. Usually moscatos can have a over bearing sweet taste that coats the tongue, but that was not the case with this selection. Their smoked old fashioned base whiskey is makers mark which really comes through they use an orange bitters in the mix which doesn't cut the warmth of makers mark original taste. If you're going with citrus notes on an old fashioned you still need sweet to balance the flavor so maybe a cherry soaked sugar cube or a different base whiskey because makers mark is not a good base for old fashioned. Now if you're looking to get drunk order this drink it is strong! Lol... now the food... you know, the reason you're here right!? The bread was nice toasted warm, served with a smoked butter, and regular butter, amazing flavors and texture! The steaks cooked perfectly, nice peppered sear on the outside and cooked medium rare (our liking), on the inside, perfect! The mashed potatoes and asparagus also great flavors! The scallops, most were over cooked unfortunately, but this restaurant redeems itself with their crab legs! They should offer a whole plate with that as the main. We ordered it as an extra/add on, and we were not disappointed perfect seasoning, melted butter, nice and rich crab meat! They were honestly the highlight of the meal. The service was ok, felt a little unattended then rushed at the end. We weren't asked if we wanted dessert, water glasses weren't filled. First time I've seen the exceptional wine we tasted at Yelp's Elite preview before Restaurant Week. While we only had a few ounces of 'Saved' at the Elite Yelp preview, we found it to be exceptional! A blend of Zin, Cab, Merlot and Cab-Franc, it tricks you into thinking it's got a touch of port in it, but not so. There is something to that blend that adds interesting depth, a touch of sweetness and proved to be a superb accompaniment to our meal! Desserts are all made in house including the NY Cheesecake! J Gilbert's served a steady array of beautifully prepared entrees, thoughtfully plated and professionally served. J Gilbert's is a semi upscale restaurant that relies heavily on its atmosphere. It does a pretty good job of this. The restaurant builds its whole ambiance off of its wood fired steaks and has a couple of fire places strategically placed in the dining room for effect. Lights are kept low and the tables are tucked in to add to the intimacy. Some at our table started off with an appetizer of bleu cheese melted over oven fried chips. It was a nice beginning. Most of the table opted to snack on the complimentary bread and butter. I decided to choose the 3-course prix (sp?) meal and began the night with the Maryland Crab bisque. It was pretty good. I followed it up with a 6 oz filet and a baked potato for my main course. The steak was cooked well, but I kind of wish it held a little bit of flavor for the price. Another at our table tried the salmon. She said it was delicious and even got a box to take some of it home. I finished the night with a vanilla cheesecake, which was nice and rich. There was a little hickup with our service. After we were sat it took a while for us to have an appetizer order and then our main orders taken. Once this did happen everything seemed to flow okay, but we had an 8pm reservation and were all getting hungry. I also want to make it clear that I did enjoy my filet, but I did feel for the flavor and cut that it was a tad on the expensive side. So to conclude, J Gilbert's is a good solid restaurant, but for the price, I would save it as a place to go on a special occassion, like a birthday, anniversary or graduation dinner read more

Was looking for best steakhouses in KC for a business dinner and I saw that this place was consistently ranked 1. Made reservations for a table for 6 and we were given a good one. The ambiance of the place was so cozy and it was dimly lit in an elegant way. There was an actual fireplace where wood was actually burning, I loved that. Our server, didn't get her name unfortunately, was so knowledgable and engaging and quick. She asked if some of us were first timers and explained their specialties for both steak and seafood. So we gave in to a bountiful seafood platter with the freshest oysters, crab, prawns, and lobster with different sauces served alongside. Someone ordered the bleu cheese chips too and it was a hit, though I personally am not into potatoes. It is Restaurant Week so they had a specific menu for it for $33 each which came with either soup or salad, main, and dessert. I got the Crab Bisque (divine!), medium rare Kansas City Strip Steak (additional charge of $10 and worth it!) and a slice of chocolate cake for dessert (heavenly!). I normally am always on a diet and into calorie counting but this dinner, except for the steak, I was able to finish it all! It was worth the money and sooo worth the calories! My husband and I went to J Gilbert for an anniversary. We made a reservation and mentioned that it was our anniversary. The restaurant decorated our table and offered free dessert. I absolutely love small gestures from restaurants! Items we ordered: Cocktails: my first order was horrible but then the waiter offered to remake my drink. I got the mango martini, it was strong and fruity. My husband ordered a spicy cocktail, it was weird but he loved it. Appetizer: our go to order is always Calamari. Mehhh, the Calamari was good but nothing special. I will have to try another appetizer next time. Main dishes: -Cowboy cut steak: the steak was amazing. We ordered medium, the steak came out perfect and seasoned well (Our test is: when the steak does not require any steak sauce). Perfectly aged and cooked perfect. The sides were amazing: we upgraded to lobster mac and mushroom risotto. AMAZING! -Crab cakes: crab cakes did not have any extra breading. It is just lumps and lumps of crab! The sauce was amazing. The mash potatoes was smooth and buttery! Dessert: I went overboard on dessert. I feel like if you are a great restaurant, you need to be awesome dessert. -Chocolate cake: chocolaty, buttery, and amazing. No words. It was date night and I wanted to get a steak. Being in Kansas City that should be an easy task. But most steak houses in town are expensive and don't fit the traditional meat and potato meal I like sometimes. I decided to try J. Gilbert's and it was decent. Part of the reason I gave it four stars was because it was expensive and I don't want to feel ripped off. I'll start with the steak which had a great woodfired flavor but had too much gristle. I'm not sure if that's something they can pick out before they cook it so I don't blame them. I make a mean mushroom Risotto and their Risotto and potatoes could've used more salt and overall flavor. The appetizer plate was probably my favorite part of the meal definitely unique flavors. Apple pie dessert was great with the gooseberries and the warm cold distinct difference. This place was amazing. The atmosphere was lovely. The waiter Jeremy was out of this world. It was our first time here. I did not order appetizers because the main course seemed like a lot of food. My boyfriend got the soup though, once I hear what it was my eyes must have lit up because Jeremy brought me a sample to try, no charge. The steak and crab cake was cook to perfection. Made a reservation online almost 2 hours before my 8:15 reservation. Got here and they can't find my reservation in their system. So we were seated at a tiny 2 person table, because that's all they had available. By tiny I mean tiny! The restaurant was quite loud for an upscale place. We will not be returning. Bad experience plus bad hostess equals never returning. I'd much rather spend my $120+ someplace else. The hostess was quite snotty and so were the other 2 girls chatting behind the check in area. My bread was hard (harder than it should have been). It took 10 minutes to get a wine menu and then another 30 minutes to get the actual bottle of wine. Should we have left and gone someplace else? Yes. However it was a date night without kids and already late. My tortilla soup would have been phenomenal however, it was cold and had tomatoes after I specifically inquired to make sure they weren't on/in the soup. I can't say I would recommend this place. All of my friends Love it, they swear by it, they come here to splurge. I've read amazing reviews and I am super fair! Let me start my saying that my preference for steak anywhere I go is the Ribeye Steak. I just can't say was blown away. I can't say that the money we spent here was worth all the hype I heard about from my friends and reviews. I'm not sure I trust my friends anymore, lol. At least not for food recommendations. We came as a double date. Our tab Total was about $600. 3 out of 4 plates went back to get "reheated" (I was the one who didn't complain even though my food was a little cool, it wasn't cold but if you're someone who wants to see steam come off your food when they set down the plate, that isn't what any of us got. Service was okay but it was a busy night so I can't take away anything for that as I am always understanding of that. The food just didn't knock me off my feet for what we paid.
