The Opera cake (on the left) was my favorite but the Mocha Cake (on the right) was favored by the rest of my family. The nice lady behind the counter did say that the Mocha Cake is their number one seller. However, generous amount of ganache on top of the Opera Cake is what won me over. Service was goood very helpful because they have so many items baked food and also hot food out the back which I went and got a Thai ice tea that was really good as well. Ambiance is very. We ordered a cake for a Sunday event and it all went smoothly. It was a half sheet vanilla cake with strawberry filling and it was moist and tasty, and not too sweet. We asked for writing on the cake and it was all ready for pickup Sunday morning as promised. Very similar to 85'. I'm sure they do not want to be compared. The selection and taste is different from 85' and is actually pretty good. They have the mini-Moon Cakes! I love that because not too many bakeries carry them, and for $2.95 that's not bad. We found this place to be a great place to get desserts, both for individuals and cakes for large parties. The tastes where pretty good. Individual servings: The green tea cake had a mix of bitterness (cake) and sweetness (cream) that was rather intriguing. Have to get this one at least once to taste. Any of the chocolates where great because they used dark chocolate and milk chocolate in tantum to give the palette just enough bitterness (dark) to let you know it's there. Loved them. Cakes: We had the fruit cheesecake. The fruit was simply well done with enough softness to melt in your mouth while keeping it's texture on the cake. The cake itself was light (meaning really rich, right?), lightly sweet (not overpowering), and it melted on the tongue just like the fruit. IT WAS GREAT! SO, JJ Bakery IS different from 85'. This location is perfect since it is nestled next to Sam Woo in Irvine. So after stuffing your face with delicious Chinese food, you can skip your way next door for a sweet treat! I always enjoy going to a J.J. Bakery because the cakes always look amazingly delicious and the taste is so delicate and not overly sweet! The creme is always nice and fluffy and not smacking your face with a sugar high. Beware! This location is NOT related to the other JJ Bakery locations - and it shows! The pastries are strange, the decor is outdated, and the staff is really rude. One staff member even ran into me and didn't even apologize! On top of that, they have really unsanitary practices and left their bread bags wide open even during the early days of COVID. I was going to buy a cake this morning and was heading to a chain bakery. Suddenly I decided I should support local mom & pop, and pulled in to J.J. There were 4 employees; 2 behind the counter and 2 by the shelves. I was the only customer. They were just talking to each other. I waited for them to finish, but eventually I said "excuse me". Nothing. So I said"I guess you don't want my business ". One of the ladies looked at me, then walked over to the phone. I left and went elsewhere. We have gone here many many times over the years both to purchase pastries, bread, and order cake. The pastries and bread are so good! Price is on point for the most part. The bread is not as greasy and buttery as some other bakeries, so we like how it tastes. You can always ask the employees to see when a certain bread is coming out so you always know when to get it fresh each day! Our family favorites are the chicken pie, pineapple danish with buttermilk, and tuna danish. Almost all of there danish type breads are good and flaky! As for the cakes- they are very accommodating! They will try their best to make exactly what you want. And of course, they make it fresh to order! You can also request to have less frosting. It is not as sweet as American cake as they use a type of whipped cream for their frosting. We will always come here for cake! Our favorite to get is their vanilla cake with strawberry filling. I ordered my wedding cake from JJ Bakery and couldn't be happier that I did. I grew up going to JJ Bakery for birthday cakes, moon cakes, and all those tasty pastries, so it was a perfect choice. I did inquire with other bakers but JJ gave me a great quote and I know the cake would be delicious and not too sweet. So this is going to be a mixed review. My wife and I initially stopped in to pick up some bread and were not a fan and were turned off from coming back. Who knows, maybe that batch of bread just happened to be too salty, but that was our first experience and it left a bad taste in our mouth... The 4-star rating is more so for the desserts... which are AMAZING! I decided to come back in a couple weeks later, mainly because 85 was out of the way, but I'm very happy that I walked in. My mind was definitely changed after this visit. I picked up a creme brûlée that was mind blowingly good, a lemon tart that was pretty fantastic, and the watermelon sponge cake. All delicious! I'll have to give there bread another chance, but the desserts definitely have me coming back! Just came back in for another creme brûlée, mango pudding, and a double cheesecake. BOMBDOTCOM! Would've liked to rate higher because I basically grew up eating most of the pastries available in this bakery, but was a bit frustrated with some of their operations. The hours aren't updated accordingly on the Yelp page so I ended up going around 8:00 AM on a Sunday only to see that the new hours changed to open daily at 9:00 AM. Submitted new hours accordingly in hope other Yelpers might not accidentally show up early for no reason. So after I returned after 9:00 AM, I found out not all the pastries were available. This included items such as egg tarts and pork sung bread. The associate behind the counter was nice and shared that the items should be out in 30 minutes. Ended up running errands around the plaza and returning around 10:00 AM and luckily most of the items I wanted were available and restocked. A word of caution is to also ask about the freshness of the sliced bread because apparently it was one of the items that would be a day old. Most of the breads are only between $2-4 (egg tarts are $2 each) and a full Neapolitan cake is $24 (other full cakes are around this range). Prices are affordable, service has been good in my experience, but the availability of certain items does make it difficult for people who want to pick up fresh items in the morning. It seems the best time is to go closer to noon if you want the full selection. Would definitely recommend this place for people craving Chinese bakery items! read more

Just found this bakery and wanted to try it out. Wow what a great selection of traditional Chinese bakery favorites - cakes, buns, breads, and crepe brûlée. Found my favorite coconut buns with crepe and bbq pork buns. Better yet, it's affordable. If eating what I picked out, I went back to pick a dozen treats for my brother-in-laws family. However, when I needed to meet my friend, I decided to choose J.J. Bakery. I ordered a slice of moka cake while my friend ordered tiramisu. Unfortunately, the moka cake turned out to be dry and had a strange taste. We ordered coffee as well, a staff member handed me a cup and instructed me to fill it up from the carafe. However, there was not enough coffee in the carafe, so I settled for only half a cup. I went back to check if there was more, but as I was doing so, a mean old lady walked by and snapped, "NO REFILL!!". The menu is mostly Taiwanese dishes, pork/chicken chop rice and some hot griddle dish like HK style western dishes. The only big difference between this cafe and Ten Ten Tea Stations is they have the herb salted chicken/pork chop. Usually, it's herb salted chicken nugget (aka Sien-Su-Ji) but this place makes the pork/chicken chop version. When you order, this dish comes with soup, some type of blanched veggie, corn, egg, and rice with some minced pork. It's pretty good deal and tasty. This place can be quite busy during lunch but you get to choose sitting inside or outside of the cafe. read more

OG Irvine shop with classic Chinese bakery favorites. I've been here many times & they always have my favorite cold triangle sandwiches & sausage buns. Of course, it's better to come earlier on in the day as their bread is freshly baked. The bread is still warm if you come in the mornings which is a plus! The one time I came in the evening, my bolo bread was a bit stale... may be my fault since I came close to closing time though. I prefer coming to this bakery versus bigger chain shops because the options they have are what you would find in bakeries in Asia with their more traditional and authentic flavors.
