Visited the store today 7/3/2022. My mother went to the store to pick up some bread for her grandchildren. She went inside and was met with unfriendly service and prejudice...she used English and Chinese to ask for help regarding allergens in the bread since her youngest granddaughter has an egg allergy and the lady purposely spoke only English to her and kept saying she doesn't understand my mom ... My mom then tried her best to use her knowledge of English to finish buying the breads but the cashier (same person who "helped" her) then turned around to the kitchen and used CHINESE to ask for change to break the $100 bill my mother was using to pay for the bread. It is unnecessary for the employee to be so harsh on anyone especially someone who is purely just asking for help regarding an allergen. If she could not "speak" Chinese she could have had the decency to tell her she could not be helped. As a patron and as a local who has gone and shopped at the location many years it's very unsettling to see such behavior. Being racist and not accommodating or even not accepting to help others is what we experienced at the store. Be careful when visiting this store. Not only are they prejudice towards their patrons, but they are very very unwelcoming towards people who have allergies. read more

This is a review for the bakery only. I gotta try the cafe one day.... i got a cake for my grandma's 90th birthday. :) it was the vanilla with fruit cocktail inside. it was bout 21 bucks. The cake was bomb and grandma approved! :D the people working there are super friendly, nice and accommodating. if you're diabetic or just don't like overly sweet things, come to asian bakeries for your cake/pastries needs. they don't drop a ton of frosting on your cake unlike American bakeries. Clean bakery but not a lot of selections on pastries. I never tried them, so I'm not sure if they are good or not. I came here around 9 p.m, to buy a cake for my friend and was in a rush. There was only one elderly lady at the cash register so it took a while for me to tell her what I wanted and to pay, but she was super sweet. I chose a mocha cake. It was decently priced and REALLY good. It wasn't overly sweet, and really soft. I think I'll have to grab a slice after I finish up this review... Candles are CHEAPER here than Albertsons or Ralphs! They're only $1 for 1 vs $3 for 2 elsewhere. I think cakes range from $12-24, but whatever cake you decide to get, I'm sure it'll be delicious. read more

On this particular visit, the location ran out of pineapple buns and had only one left which was unfortunate. I did pick up a six-pack of char siu bao. These reheat very nicely for a savory snack throughout the week. Solid option for their ready-made pastries whenever you're in the area. read more

J.J. was so exciting to try out! I love trying new foods to this was exciting for me. I ended up being in this center randomly and liked that the name of the business was my initials so of course I had to try it. I got the cheese stick, which was still warm and tasted more like an everything bagel to me than a cheese stick. But I loved it! The second time I visited, I ordered the Neapolitan cake and that was very yummy too! If you are having a party, this is a great place to buy a nice reasonably-priced cake. Only $20-$25 for gorgeous cakes. They said to call and order ahead to make sure they have it available and fresh when you come to pick it up. I want to try the moon cakes and other pastries they offer here, but I can't get myself to do it because I'm so obsessed with the cheese stick (which doesn't taste too cheesy! This place caught my eye as i walked by because of the delicious pastries they had on display. Copying the similar style of Asian American pastries shop of 85 degree chain, JJ bakery has their own similar but smaller version. My family and I go here a lot. It satisfies our craving for Asian-targetted, not-too-sweet dessert. We love their creme brulee, Mont Blanc, and their chocolate cake. The creme brulee isn't exactly the type of creme brulee you imagine; it doesn't have that hardened top layer but it's still good in it's own way. A crowded Chinese bakery in a crowded predominantly Chinese plaza. There's always a line at this busy bakery where people can buy the traditional Chinese baked goods along with some cakes. My favorite is the pineapple bun. Adjoined to the bakery is a restaurant where they have serve some hot dishes and drinks. I tried the sausage rice and it was decent at best. I know someone who worked here and the insider reveals that the owner is a grade-A bitch. I'm supposed to boycott this place. read more

JJ Bakery is a nice place to stop for some rolls and buns. They also have killer cakes in different flavors in different sizes that feed 1 person (a slice of cake), a small cake (4-5 people) to a large cake for 10-14 people. Our family usually get our cakes here for decent price, but usually I stop by for their steam bun (pork or bbq pork) but their pastries like the taro bun, pork bun is delish and afforadable ($1.10-$1.25 each). I used to go to 85C, but I hated the wait. I'm not the avid fan that comes to the bakery an hour (or two) before opening just to close the shop, but one that just passes by occasionally if I'm in the area. I especially like JJ bakery because there are savory and sweet breads baked fresh without the fuss and the wait. The day that I came, some of the breads were still hot and not even sealed yet. Zing!! I'm in love. I'm a huge fan of their sweet breads! The pastries are moist and buttery. Just like 85C, it can get busy, but not ungodly crowded. The plaza itself can be tough to find parking cause 99 Ranch is right there, but I think it's worth the wait. I'm definitely coming back when I get cravings for sweets :) read more

They have a huge variety of Cantonese and Taiwanese breads and cakes. The chocolate chiffon cake is light and fluffy. The pork sung sandwich is a great, delicious lunch item (in the fridge). I recently tried a egg yolk with white sesame puff pastry- sweet and flaky. Yummy! read more

I think this 2nd location on Jeffrey is different from the Culver one that I checked into. The sign on the outside of the Jeffrey location says J Sweet bakery but then inside it is all JJ Bakery. A little confusing. Anyways, I enjoyed the savory items here like the chicken pie and the curry beef pastries. They also have cold puddings/cakes and some sweet pastries. I haven't tried my custard one yet, but the items look good and are fairly priced. It hasn't been too crowded whenever I've come here and I like the balance of sweet and savory items. Rude AF!! I've been to this place several times. Each time the customer service just keeps on getting worse. I'm Asian and I'm accustomed to bad or no customer service and this place surely did not disappoint!! Let me tell ya' Came here around 1:30 today and they were dead...maybe one other couple in there as well. When I went to register to pay the cashier just looks at me like I'm the scum of the earth wasting her precious time. She doesn't greet me but just took my breads/pastries and waits for me to pay her. Doesn't even bother to tell me the amount of the sale. I paid her the $14.25 and just got the heck out of there. On another occasion I came here with my kids sitting in their double strollers. I had a hard time opening the door and pushing the stroller in. Two ladies who were working at the time saw me but just watched me struggle to open the door. They were doing nothing but never offered to help me. As a customer I always remember kind gestures as well as rude ones. With everything being said I (for obvious reasons) never ever go out of my way to come here. Their breads/pastries aren't even that good. I always buy the same thing from this place bc my daughter has a very simple palette. Sorry to say but their stuff is probably the worse in irvine. 85 and sunmerry are way better!! The only reason why I even stop by is bc I'm shopping over at 99 Ranch. Some reviewers are mistaken the bakery side and the cafe side as one. Even though both sides are connected but the cafe side and the bakery side are not the same. They're also NOT related to any other J.J bakery or cafe in Alhambra or Arcadia or wherever you may think it is (they have fine print on their business card). This review is for the J.J bakery side located in Culver, Irvine only. I'm going to compare this deserted bakery to the more loved and popular with long line 85C that i used to go to. First i like the packaging here more than the ones you get at 85C bakery. Why? because you can seal your pastries to keep them fresh. I used to go crazy buying a tons of breads in 85C and they ended up getting old since i can't seal the bags. Not for J.J bread. The adhesive band on the bag helps me keep the bread fresh so i can still eat them after couple days of purchase. Now to the breads and pastries. To compare the quality of the breads between this place and 85C, i bought the same items which were the cream buns. The one from J.J was better. The cream is definitely creamier instead of more "flour mixing" like the one from 85C. The bread is also softer and has more cream filling inside. Sweetness and size of both buns were similar. On the variety side, i think both are comparable. You may think 85C has more variety based on their abundance of the bread but that's an illusion. Their trays are repeated with the same kind of bread throughout their shelves.Mind trick much. The chocolate slices here are also better than the one at 85C. They are soft and spongy with nice fluffy cream in the layers whereas 85C ones were definitely drier. Price wise, this place is cheaper for better breads and pastries. Enough said. The service: i just picked my bread, paid and bounced so not much interaction to create any kind of conflict. The verdict: if you like to people watch and wait in line and just to be in a sociable environment, go to 85C.The breads are decently good and It's more fun there. If you just want to grab your breads quickly, go home and enjoy them by yourself and save them for couple days, this is the place. P.S: if you're a girl and don't like to wear lots of clothes, don't visit these bakeries too much cuz they're fattening unless your body fat distribute to the right places :) read more

The cake here is dry and tasteless. It deceptively looks delicious, but is massively disappointing. The place itself is clean and looks to be kept at a good hygiene standard. Staff was friendly. This may be politically incorrect, but Asians definitely do baked goods way better than other people. Their selection for cakes and cookies are so good looking I want to take it all home - inventive, pretty, and delicious - that's the way food should always be. I recommend you try the cheesecake. Great for both sweet and salty snacks, JJ's is one of the better Taiwanese bakeries around. Similar to other types of eateries (e.g., Korean frozen yogurt), there are a lot of "knock-offs" that are not as tasty or fresh and/or offer as broad a selection. My favorites are the taro-filled bread, the different variations of hot-dog snacks (don't judge), and the crust-less sandwiches in the refrigerated section. In addition, different from the JJ Bakery in Arcadia, the Irvine location does offer a sit down section of traditional Taiwanese simple dishes, although I've yet to try. **Note: Not for the health conscious. read more

I have to stay that I am a baker and my buttercream is pretty darned good. That said, I do have an appreciation for Asian desserts. Less sweet, more delicate, and typically quite lovely, I can pass up a buttercream-covered delicacy for the right light delight. J.J. Bakery was an afterthought post a Korean BBQ dinner. We started to walk off a big meal and passed the bakery. Despite full bellies, our taste buds perked up and urged us to step inside. Just look, they said. You don't have to buy. Yeah, right. My immediate go-to has to be red bean buns. I quickly scanned a case of lovely deserts and fell into despair. Oh no. No red bean? Sensing my distress, Mr. Handsome quickly points to a display rack behind me. Eureka. Red bean heaven. I grabbed a few and waited for others to pick out their desert. Just one? Actually, we were headed to the entertainment mecca that is Sidney S.'s home, so we picked one of a few different things, figuring that we would all share at home. I ate the red bean buns on the walk to our car. At our destination, we all grabbed forks and dug in. There wasn't any trouble making sure we were clean-platers. However, I didn't see that look of intense satisfaction on anyone's faces. The deserts were all nice and none were a big wow. As for the red bean buns, they were dry. I am really, really disappointed in JJ Bakery. I live within a mile of JJ Bakery and I've been a regular here ever since I moved to Irvine. I'm pretty sure I've seen that girl cashier behind the counter at least 5 times. Today, I was starving and borderline hangry already when I walked in. Maybe it was the low blood glucose that impaired my ability to think clearly, but I chose a rice dish off the menu like I always do. Usually I stick with sausage or chicken leg rice but today I decided I was craving pork chop. I ordered a fried pork chop rice. All of the pictures have the pork on the rice, and chinese sides like cabbage or vegetables. I got home, ready to chomp into my chinese pork chop rice, and I open the box to find a weird looking pork chop with POTATO SALAD AND A SOGGY SALAD!! Potato salad at a chinese restuarant?? That is definitely ODD. I called JJ and asked them why I had potato salad and a soggy salad instead of the regular chinese vegetable sides. The person who answered the phone said that the teriyaki chicken and "fried?" pork chop comes with these weird sides but ALL of the other rice dishes come with the regular chinese sides. I guess there is a "salted fried pork chop" that is the chinese version of this dish. WTF. She was very rude, very unhelpful, and offered no alternative or decision. I asked her that since the menu didn't specify this difference between fried and salted, if I could bring in my food at least for a side exchange. She said no! If the JJ Bakery manager out there is ready this... Please state on your menu that certain dishes on your menu come with americanized sides instead of the regular stuff you would expect from a chinese restaurant.
