What a hidden gem! Sister and I initially wanted Kura Sushi at the mall, but the 1.5 hour wait was a no go for us. We yelp'd sushi and found this place 0.5miles away and happy we did! The place was clean and the servers were super nice and quick with our meal! We got seated right away and even though we got there 45 minutes to close, we did not feel rushed to finish at all. Now onto the food. We ordered the spicy edamame garlic, salmon lover roll, albacore delight and unagi nigiri. Everything came to us at the same time and we feasted. Spicy garlic edamame - delicious! Has a good kick but not too spicy and you can really taste the garlic and other chili goodness! Salmon Lover Roll - Salmon on top of salmon and avocado?! How can you go wrong?! I wish there was a way to highlight what kind of sushi you are going to get on a yelp page. If you're looking for great sushi this place isn't it. Basically all the rolls are variation on a theme, with a lot of California roll or California roll with something on it. The nigiri was just ok. We drove a bit to come here based on the reviews and it was a bit of bummer. I definitely didn't scratch my sushi itch and it was also not cheap for basic food that was all really similar in taste. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good either The restaurant itself is pretty simple and straight forward and it was decently quiet. Service wasn't great but wasn't the worst either. If you're looking for a basic sushi spot this may be it for you, but it's nothing to write home about and we won't be back. My sushi spot before we moved was Kiwami in Studio City but also enjoyed places like Sushi Gen in DTLA. I have been looking for my new sushi spot after moving, and it's been tough because there are a lot of great reviews on pretty mediocre spots. read more

I'm a little obsessed with J Sushi in Brea. Found this place as an early dinner before heading to Disneyland. The rolls are delicious and fairly priced, they have monthly specials for rolls along with daily specials and the service is great! I came again recently for lunch and got a bento box of chicken and beef with their daily special roll of the golden dragon. The bento box was huge and delicious. They also offer a 5% Yelp discount if you check in and a point system with your phone number. It's a good sized place and the quality is pretty good with fast service. Ugh. Really wanted to go back to making it my go to sushi place but can't. I placed an order today in the morning to go pick up at 2:20pm. Got there and they didn't have it ready. They had mistakenly entered it as 3:20pm. The guy who made the mistake tells me he will tell the chef to make my order quick. I ordered 6 California rolls. I asked the girl behind the counter how long this would take. "Oh California rolls are quick" she said as I would imagine since this is the most basic and easiest roll to make out of all the rolls in sushi history. I stood at the counter for 16 minutes watching 8 specialty rolls made and served ahead of my order including 2 as a to go order for someone who hadn't even come in at all to pick up while I was waiting. Logically (and out of courtesy) I feel since they messed up my order and I had placed it hours before everyone else and I was having to stand there my order should have taken priority over others. I felt extremely awkward and disrespected while I had to stand in the middle of the restaurant watching everyone else get their order even though I had placed mine hours before them. Nobody was apologetic and everyone was very nonchalant that this happened that I actually wondered if this was some sort of weird payback for my last review. I should have asked when I was there but was starving and just wanted to eat even though I didn't enjoy it because I don't like Imitation Crab. Both rolls I ate had Imitation Crab and I thought I messed up and ordered the wrong roll. Came home to do my review and checked the menu against what I received and the receipt. Amazing food, but the repeated disrespect toward loyal customers is disappointing I've been coming to J Sushi for a long time, and I've always considered it the best sushi spot in town. The food has never been the problem it's consistently great. The issue is the repeated behavior from the staff during the last hour before closing, and after tonight, I feel I can't keep overlooking it. Almost every time if I visit within an hour or a little over an hour from closing, the staff makes it very obvious they want to shut down early. They start mopping, turn off the "Open" sign, and drop the check without asking if we're done--even though many times we still plan on ordering more. It creates an uncomfortable, rushed atmosphere, even when we arrive well before closing time. What makes this more frustrating is that I'm truly not a difficult customer. I order the same thing every visit--two California rolls--and my party usually orders immediately because we are all aware of the menu items. As soon as the server comes to the table, we order everything at once. We aren't demanding and we don't ask for round after round of items. On top of that, I'm extremely polite: I stack my plates, I stack my cups, I keep the table clean, and I never leave a mess. I've worked in the food industry myself, so I understand what the staff goes through that's exactly why I'm respectful. But when customers show that level of respect, it should be mutual. Last night (8:22 PM), a party of three including myself walked in. The restaurant closes at 9 PM, so we were surprised when the hostess told us, with an irritated tone, "last call is at 8:30." When I said that was fine, she half-eye rolled and pointed at the booth indicating for us to sit like we were a burden. At that point, we decided we weren't going to sit down somewhere we support every week only to feel unwelcome. As we left, she even seemed to laugh about it. I want to emphasize: I love the food here. Truly. But after yesterday's experience, I do not plan on coming back for a while. And it's not just about yesterday night--this has been a regular pattern with several employees I've been served by more than once. I understand I arrived a little later than usual on 12/8 but as long as customers order before 8:30 PM, we should not feel rushed, judged, or treated like an inconvenience. That is exactly how businesses lose great, loyal customers. I really hope management takes this to heart, because the food is amazing--but the service in the last hour of the night needs serious improvement.
