Lunch Review. I really wanted to LOVE this place. I had looked at the menu online and it had plenty of things that were intriguing. We started with the peanut noodles. They were tasty but nothing phenomenal. I wish they served it with pickled cucumbers instead of the large cucumber slices. It really needed a little acid to pick me up to it. My friend had a shrimp salad which she said was good. I ordered the Ahi Tuna....big mistake. Just looking at the tuna, you could see the stringy fat. Sometimes a little marbling is okay but this stuff was horrible. How horrible, you ask? I couldn't cute me knife through it!!! It is seared tuna!!! It should practically melt in your mouth. Instead I couldn't even rip off pieces to eat. So I ate the noodles that accompanied the dish. Normally I would have said something to the waiter but he NEVER came back to our table after taking our order. Our drinks never got refilled which is too bad because the lemonade was delicious. He dropped off the check and I said "Excuse me. Look at this tuna. It is horrible. I can't even eat it." He said he'd tell the chef and came back and said I could order something else. At this point, my friend was finished eating and honestly I had no desire to trust anything else they made here. He told us he would go adjust the check. They charged me for the NOODLES!!!!!!! Who does that??? It is a side dish and I ate it because there was nothing else edible on my plate! It was only a few dollars but the gall of charging a customer after you sent out a piece of tuna that wasn't worthy of cat food. With that said, I won't be back. If the owner/chef would have come out and given me an apology, it would have been different. I'm really bummed. Bad customer service can't make even the best chef look good. read more

Very good food, but overpriced. Eggs Benedict $13 and hash browns are a $4 side? No one offered us coffee/drinks until our sullen server eventually appeared to take our order. A cute, clean place with good food but there are decidedly better breakfasts at lower prices, with deeper menus and more pleasant service east on Red Arrow Highway (BPC and especially LC). read more

My wife and I have been coming to the New Buffalo area for years, and Jackie's Café has always been a "must," every trip. Recently, we escaped to Harbor Country for a brief break from the cabin fever of the Spring isolation, and were excited to see Jackie's was open for take out orders. The Eggs Benito (basically an Eggs Benedict, but with jalapeno cornbread and a mildly spicy cheese sauce) was amazing as always, with the gentle warmth of the rich cheese sauce, and mild sweet and spicy cornbread. We also tried the Blueberry French Toast, thick wedges of bread stuffed with blueberry sauce. With maple syrup and a dollop of Jackie's lemon curd, it was a delicious interpretation of an old classic. Jackie is a wonderful, gracious host, buzzing around the dining room, kitchen, and the baked goods section in the back, making sure everything is just right. We love Jackie's, and it is obvious many others do as well. we wish her continued success, through the pandemic, and for years to come. read more

I wish I could give two separate ratings, one for food and another for service. We had breakfast at Jackie's Cafe yesterday. It was very warm and bright. We were seated promptly and our waitress brought water. Perhaps she was new at the job, maybe she was having an off day but she barely spoke to us, and after after waiting a few minutes, I had to ask for coffee. This was the first time I've ever gone to breakfast where the server did not ask if anyone cared for coffee. It wasn't busy - only one other couple in the room. The meal was delicious! You could taste that the ingredients were fresh. After having been served over cooked yolks at other restaurants, these eggs Benedict were perfectly prepared and the hollandaise fresh tasting. My friend's scramble also perfectly cooked, light and fluffy. Not once did our waitress ask if we needed a warmup on our coffee. She spent her time chatting with the other couple, apparent regulars. We heard her telling the couple about the owner, the shop in the back and other info, all while forgetting that she had another table! She only warmed up to us while delivering the check, tip time. It will be awhile before we come back as, although the food was excellent, the service we received was poor. read more

Driving home to Michigan from Chicago we happened upon this lovely eatery and stopped for breakfast. I didn't realize it was operated by a renound chef. Lucky for us. The usual breakfast of eggs over easy with ham, hash browns and multi grain toast was delicious! The hash browns had an exceptional deliciousness and the lemon curd spread for the toast was an exquisite surprise. Five plus stars read more

Recently discovered this cafe, even though it apparently was open already for at least a year or two. Delighted to try a new breakfast place, as there are very few in the area. Food is excellent--have had the savory crepe multiple times (recommended it, as well) and it is delicious! I like almost as much the accompanying salad--fresh, perfect balance of dressing. Side of bacon is a meaty, nicely cooked treat. My husband has the traditional breakfast and other family members have tried the french toast (I think)--regardless, all of us really enjoyed our food. I thought the prices were pretty much in line with what we usually pay at Rosie's or other places in the area for a full breakfast and taxes/tip. Charming patio, and fun little bakery in the back, at which we stop every time and take home more goodies. Happy that Jackie has chosen New Buffalo to open her place, and we look forward to many, many more meals there! P.S. Next time, we are going to try to interesting lunch dishes! read more

The best breakfast and lunch in Harbor Country! A great creative menu, but sprinkled with standards--there's something for everyone. Everything is made from scratch and with the best ingredients. Great versions of eggs Benedict with homemade hollandaise sauce. When you are finished, check out the takeout store in the back of the building. Amazing chocolate cookies. At breakfast that is definitely worth getting out of bed for. read more

We have never been to New Buffalo but stopped in on the way to Ann Arbor. After reading the reviews, we chose Jackie's for breakfast. The food and service exceeded our expectations. Jackie herself was running food, along with two others. My husband had her blueberry french toast, excellent. I had the frittata of the day-leeks, asparagus, ricotta, also delic. Very disappointing experience for breakfast. We were seated quickly as the place was not very crowded but waited close to an hour for our breakfast. We watched people who came in after us get served and leave. When we asked where our order was, server said we were next. Clearly we were not. One of us actually went into the kitchen and owner told us our order got lost. No real apology. When one of our egg dishes was served it was prepared incorrectly. After wasting almost the entire morning there, we were presented with the full bill. When We questioned the judgement of charging us the full amount for this miserable experience, server took one breakfast off. Omg. read more

Possibly the cleanest restaurant I have ever been in, She also is very connected to her patrons - super friendly and hospitable. The waitress we had was stunning and exceptionally kind. They need more staff during busy times such as Sunday mornings. We waited around 10 minutes to be seated as the two waitresses were very busy. Once seated, the menu looked very inviting but also pricey for breakfast. From the time we ordered our food, it was a while before we ate, around 20 to 30 minutes. We tried Jackie's for lunch on a busy Saturday. There were seven of us, including three little kids. Because there was a wait for a table, we opted for take out (around back) instead. Jackie came out to take our order and, despite the restaurant being extremely busy, was very kind and accommodating. She offered to make anything for the kids that wasn't on the menu and gave us a delicious (free) cookie while we decided on our order. Everything we got--tomato soup, kale and quinoa salad, a turkey sandwich, and Ahi tuna with noodles--was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend! read more

Went this morning with a table of 6 friends. The food wasn't bad, but the service was some of the worst I have seen anywhere. We waited a half hour to receive our drink orders-- when they came we were given cups of coffee to grossly varying levels, one being less than half a cup. My friend joked that they should have served him coffee in a thimble. In the time it took for our food to arrive we saw 2 tables get up and leave due to poor service. When the food did arrive we were missing several items-- at this point, over an hour into the experience (literally), we didn't even care to have the order corrected. The waiter was completely unapologetic and did not even thank us for dining at the end of the meal. We were surprised to see an empty dining area when we walked out from the patio... further proving the bad service as they weren't even busy at this point. My husband and I recently enjoyed lunch at Jackie's Café in New Buffalo, MI. It's a cheerful and cozy venue, decorated with colorful artwork and has an attractive terrace for outdoor dining in warmer weather. The walls of the hallway to the restrooms chronicle Chef Jackie Shen's illustrious 30+ year career in Chicago. While we studied the breakfast and lunch menus, I spotted a plate of fresh blueberry muffins and ordered one to nibble while I pondered the many choices. At that point Chef Jackie appeared and observed, "You're eating your dessert before the main course!" My husband started with gingered squash soup, thick and fragrant. We both declared it the best we'd ever tasted. We shared chicken satay - a generous portion of juicy morsels on wood skewers. We ended up taking a couple skewers and some peanut sauce home. I enjoyed a flavorful, toothy quiche served with fresh greens and fruit. My husband was very happy with his chicken parmesan Caesar salad. We stopped in the take-out deli where we picked up a package of cheese shortbread wafers, a couple of rich, moist brownies and freshly-made blueberry and grape preserves, as well as a jar of house-made lemon curd. Beside greeting guests up front and dishing out deli salads in the back, Jackie was busy baking for an animal benefit affair that evening in Chicago! Highly recommended. We'll be making the three-hour round trip again soon. read more

Our visit on Father's Day was our fourth time to Jackie's and each time we, unfortunately, have to subtract 1/2 star. First, anyone who goes here just has to know the service is poor. You wait for everything, there doesn't seem to be any order in how the works, your food won't all arrive at the same time. At this visit, our hash browns arrived a full ten minutes after the rest of our food. Were the supposed to be dessert? Fortunately the food itself is pretty tasty, although the menu seems to always be about the same. Price seems to be a little too high for the area and the diner-like ambiance. But our biggest issue on this visit: we went to the bakery in back after brunch. No one was working the counter, so we flagged down someone in the kitchen; in this case it was Jackie herself. She snapped at us about being "very busy." My question: if you're too busy to staff your bakery, why do you have it at all? read more
