I'm torn with Jalapeno's. It has a soft spot in my heart due to the number of times I've been here, the fact that they have the same faces working all the time, and their good at the basics, but at the same time they don't do very well in the food department, which should be the sole purpose of a restaurant, so I'm settling with 3*s, but I think the 3.5 avg they have is very reflective. The biggest qualm I have with this place is the tortillas are pretty terrible, they are most certainly store bought, probably frozen and thawed, so I just avoid them entirely, which saddens me when going for Mexican food. The second knock is that most of the standard dishes that come with beans and rice end up being weighed down by the bland beans and rice. I think Mexican rice is a tough thing to do well, and they don't. That aside, most of the signature dishes are very good, and I really enjoy the steak and shrimp themed ones, and I almost always get one of the frozen margaritas. If poor staples of guacamole/tortillas/beans/rice aren't going to bother you, or you just want a solid margarita and some hard shell tacos. This is the place to be. read more

We chose this place for our family's "taco tuesday" because braces were tightened in the morning and my daughter needed softer choices than just tacos. They do have great crispy tacos here though. It's good tex mex in general. Don't come here expecting any frills. It's just basic in expensive tex-mex. I like it. We all enjoyed the food. They do have an all you can eat section on the menu for like 7.90. Tamales with chili con carne, beans and rice were a popular choice this visit. I love that they use jack cheese instead of cheddar on some of dishes. It was a nice surprise on my chicken nachos. I did expect to have beans in the nachos. Good little hole-in-the-wall place. Food was excellent, and prices were very reasonable. I got the lunch "All You Can Eat" cheese enchiladas for $6.99. It was more than enough for me by itself, I didn't order anything else, but just the idea you could get tacos or tamales or something for $0 more is crazy! We just left from eating lunch here and there was a couple in the corner booth inappropriately displaying affection. We asked that they be made to leave but no one seemed to care. They had already finished their meal. We asked for the manager and the register girl told us we could move tables. We finally, after we scarfed our food down, flagged down the manager and she didn't seem concerned that the young girls legs were up on the table. We will never eat there again. A casual, comfortable older Mckinney Mexican restaurant with a bar area/booths & tables area that used to be the smoking section. Both sides have big screen TV's usually with sports on. Waiters are experienced and friendly. There's not a bad waiter here. Menu has recently been updated and fresh looking as well as new carpeting and decorated as well. My only complaint is that I'd like for them to put an iguana in the bar area. (Joking) it would be the only thing lacking here. read more

Love this place! It is tucked so far back off the street you wouldn't notice it! We were fortunate that someone told us to look behind the Italian restaurant. The server brings hot chips with queso or salsa as soon as you are seated. The sweet tea is home brewed. Lunchtime is all you can eat. But, the servings are so ample, you don't need to spend the extra $. I have not had their cocktails...but they look to be quite large. Service is great. I went here with my two cousins. The Caso they brought with chips looked freaking nasty. It was watery and runny ? Never seen any cheese like that. Tried it anyway and it was bland and gross. They brought out our food ( tamales and enchiladas) ...No flavor whatsoever. Everything was tasteless mush. Halfway through, My cousin gags and pulls a long hair out from his throat. We told a waitress, who didn't say a word, and she took the plate. After a while we kind of got the feeling she was just going to make another one, so we told a manager not to waste the food ( we lost the appetite). The waitress hadn't even told her boss about it. Very casual, somewhat hole in the wall. Any place that serves queso with the chips for free gets points in my book! Chips, salsa, & queso were good! I got the shrimp caliente I believe, and my girlfriend got the enchiladas. I was expecting a pretty small portion of shrimp but I think there was at least 12! Enjoyed the food and the prices are great but the problem is lack of accessibility. There was barely enough room to get my daughter's wheelchair through the restaurant and to our table. The bathroom was completely inaccessible as her wheelchair would not fit through the bathroom door which was very upsetting. read more

This place is the best. The price for food and drinks are awesome. The margarita is as big as your head and definately worth it! The food is also great! Pork tamale and carne asada taco both yummy and well-seasoned. I tried all the salsas at the salsa bar and all of them were delicious! The restaurant is clean and festively decorated. As per my request, they put tomatillo sauce on my tamale even though it was listed differently on the menu. I took off one star only because the carne asada taco was not served hot, but just warm. This is my go to place in McKinney. Down home, not ostentatious. A real Mexican food place. The Cancun is always my favorite.

Inexpensive, good food, nice atmosphere. Good tex mex joint for lunch or dinner. The wait staff is usually just trying to keep up with the sometimes heavy traffic but it all works out. This is a regular lunch spot for myself and most of the people I know that have lived in the area for a long time. The portions are sizable so leaving hungry is not an option. I have relocated back to McKinney after about 13 years away. Jalapeno's used to be one of my favorites! Went back today, excited to inteoduce my husband to the place. What a disappointment. The restaurant had a few tables with customers...NOT crowded. We waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged, after several of the staff walked by us, ignoring us. Finally, we get seated and presented with a lunch menu. (was before 4). My husband had to chase down a manager (?) t order our drinks. I ordered jalapeno poppers as an appetizer. One would think a Tex-Mex restaurant would make their own. Nope, previously frozen and tasted freezer-burned and we couldn't eat them. The entrees were good. The service was AWFUL. When we waited to get our bill, it became obvious we would have to chase it down. When we paid, they charged us dinner prices because when we checked out it was after 4!!! While the service was excellent and staff was very friendly, I go out for the eating and this place had the most bland food I've ever paid for. I had beef enchiladas, a beef tamale, refried beans and rice. Just blah tasting. I've had better out of a can. Don't waste your time or money here. Went there for the first time today. I'm originally from east dallas so I'm big on Mexican food and it has to be a delicious. Where can I start with this place, this is a review based on the food and not the service so don't think I'm righting a bad review based on service. Their food here was not good at all, let's start with the walk in. The environment looks very authentic so very go start but then the chips and salsa and queso comes out and you are like wow queso comes with the chips. Their queso is like a milk sauce with no vegetables and no cheese taste, it was bad. Chips weren't the best but I've had worse, same with the salsa. The tamales here were a bad burnt filling and an even worse exterior. The rice tasted like a frozen precooked rice you heat in the microwave. The crispy taco had a horrible taste worse than a 1 dollar taco at Taco Bell. The enchilada wasn't bad but definitely not good but I won't go back for it if that makes sense. Please stay away from this place if you are looking for authentic and good because they don't have that here. The best thing on the menu was the tap water. Not expensive at all but definitely not worth what you pay. read more

wonderful food, and excellent service. even though i only went occasionally, when i started to order my fajitas one day, she remembered how i liked them and said "flour tortillas, extra beans, no rice, no guacamole or sour cream, and extra pico?" PERFECT! i couldn't believe she remembered. my husband and i have started going there more frequently because of her. i also ordered a long island iced tea that day. most places mix them very weak and with too much sweet and sour. i asked her if she could tell the bartender to mix it stronger, with less sweet/sour. she informed me that there is no bartender during most shifts, and that she would mix my drink herself. it was perfect. there is only one other place in mckinney that even comes close, and their price was double what i paid at jalapenos. the only reason i did not give it a 5 star rating is the bathrooms. they really need to be renovated. and maybe they have been... i haven't looked in them since last year. read more

This restaurant is not the best. It's a little run down in my opinion and the food is simply not that great. I don't recommend it.
