A standard deli that does the job. It's a nice, "I want a quick lunch out of the office" place but not a "I want a long, relaxing lunch away from the office" place. Oh JB's. How I heart you and your hot lunch specials and cold pasta salads. This is a small, down to earth deli/lunch joint. No extra frills, no crazy shenanigans, just great, solid fare for which I don't have to pay an arm and a leg. I work down the street, so when I don't feel like trekking up the hill because I forgot my lunch, JB's is my standard go-to place. They have all the sandwich combinations you could want (though their liverwurst oddly isn't my favorite), a decent selection of burgers, and *great* lunch/brunch options. Honestly, their French Toast could (and has in the past, really) keep me happy and satisfied, and maple syrup-dazed from the very first bite all the way through to when I realize that dinner time has come around and maybe a salad is the way to go. It does get crowded and a bit noisy come lunch time, but off hours it's surprisingly nice to go in and just sit and read (according to my friend who had the time to do so back in the day). Fifty feet away from my office door, this often is the default solution for lunch. Most of the time I (or at least my arteries) end up regretting the choice. Definitely not the place for folks watching their cholesterol or attempting to live somewhat healthy. And some of the specials are definitely suspect. So why three stars? For one, the people running the place are incredibly nice. But the main reason is that they've saved me from losing my job! Truth is, I literally live right around the corner from JB's. The staff is as friendly as you'll ever meet, they're very much apart of the neighborhood. I've lived on the hill for 8 years any only discovered them last year when I left the corporate world and worked from home for a bit, now that I have me one of those regular jobs again where I have to go into an office and I'm kinda bummed because I can't get my breakfast burrito or hot pastrami sandwich any 'ol time... Ok time to fess' up, sometimes I tell my boss I have to work from home so I can eat lunch there. There I said it, and if I get my butt canned then I can eat all of the turkey and avocado I want. Excellent food at a good price. My co-workers recommended this place to me after they found out that I spend entirely too many days a week at Ganim's for burgers. This place is your typical deli/sandwich place, but what they offer is some of the best sandwiches, burger and salads for the price. PLUS, you have to try their daily hot special. I just had their baked chicken and it was simply masterful. With a good helping of salad and a side of rice, it was just perfect. On top of all the good food, the people there are just the friendliest and most efficient helpers around. You wouldn't believe how fast the line moves in there during lunch time, yet you never feel like you're being ignored. Pretty impressive. Not a bad little sandwich shop. After living in the neighborhood for several years JB's Place has been closed every day we've gone by. We know that's because we're really not the target market here. Its open from 6am to 4pm Monday through Friday so I just haven't been awake in the neighborhood a when they are open. Today I was up early so I went for breakfast with my wife and ordered the churizo and egg plate with hash brown. Both we're decent and well made. Neither were spectacular but they were large portions and good. coffee was average but drinkable. Typical restaurant coffee, If you like the local roaster type coffee you won't like it. But if you normally drink Starbucks, it'll be fine. JB's is clean and nicely decorated, simple cafe style, nothing fancy. If you are looking for a quick place to grab a simple bite, you can do much worse than JB's. read more

My wife and I frickin' love this place. We get breakfast and or lunch there whenever we're around Potrero Hill, and EVERYTHING tastes good. Plus, the staff and owners are all SUPER friendly, actually care about there craft, and always check they get your order right. I like to sit down and watch the morning news over a hot breakfast inside, or if it's sunny, there are a couple of tables outside too. Then sometimes, I'll pick up a sandwich to-go and be sorted for my lunch. Prices are oddly inexpensive, I never quite figured out why but I'm not complaining. My only complaint is that JBs closes early, I think at 4pm, but I get that too. The staff look like they actually have a life and enjoy their work, probably because they DON't work 18 hours a day. Best breakfast burrito in SOMA...hands down. I get the Veggie Breakfast burrito without papas and add BACON of course. So I get some healthy veggies and some fattening meat. Mucho gusto! My first experience I was so in love with the size, taste and cost of the chicken ceaser that I over looked what bugged me my 2nd and made the 3rd time my last. It's mister macho behind the counter. The 3rd and most vivid times events went down like this. As usual he looks at you and yells "READY". Clearly it's not a question, but an order to get my order (sorry had to do it). I began to answer and as the first sound moved past my lips he turned to his coworker and started speaking a non english language. I stood there and waited for him to finish. He did finish and turned back to me and shouted another demand to know what i wanted. We had the ping pong back and forth as he wrote down on paper with his back to me. "CEASAR WITH CHICKEN?" "Yes.." "NO ONIONS?" "No, it was no peppers." "NO ONIONS?!" "NO PEPPERS......geez." We got our food and the experience wouldn't leave me and we starting joking about how "he's still mad at us", "I think it's you." "He hates you." We laughed, but then my salad looked extra glooby gooey and then our sick sense of humor took at turn. They spooged in our food! We knew it wasn't so, but the intense dislike we felt from the salad monger brought rise to the possibility of sabotage. I know it sounds lame and it's not serious, but with all the lunch options in this area why not give this guy a break. He's clearly over worked and with all the kids in the afternoon it's no wonder he's such a crab. I preceded it with a rice crispy treat to give my other dining partners a leg up but Suchie has a tapeworm and the other is polite so they still had to pack their meals to go. Was in the neighborhood around lunch time and stumbled across JBs. It's a no frills place, but that's exactly what I want in a neighborhood deli. I got a tuna melt, but they have a good variety of sandwiches and deli salads. I was happy to see that they had a good variety of beverages & snacks; in true San Fran fashion I got a strawberry Kombucha and Avocado Oil Himalayan Salt chips. Sandwiches are made to order, so there could be a bit of a wait, but my sandwich was pretty solid and filling. At the far end of my lunch range lies JB's Place, one of those quick-and-dirty-lunch-counter establishments in the vein of Wolfe's or Crockery Cafe. Decor's nicer than most, with a clean modern look balanced by warm yellow walls. The menu is suspiciously broad, and I doubt they can do everything on it very well. But it is heavily centered on sandwiches, so they're probably a safe bet. I decided to go with the daily special, Chicken Marsala, which has a notorious tendency at cheap places to taste like school cafeteria food. But to JB's credit, it was actually pretty good. I've been going to J.B.'s for the past 7 years or so and have probably tried everything they've got. My usual is the Patty Melt which is awesome, especially if you're down with the classic grease. The salads are good as well and the servers are fast and friendly. Lunchtime can produce long lines that stretches near the entrance. They've recently did a remodel and its looks great. So good! I order from here for work and today finally tried their falafel. It's tasty, crispy, and served at just the right temperature. Really good green tabbouleh too. The people here are beyond friendly and helpful, and I just noticed that they've started using TaterWare to go containers - 100% biodegradable and GMO free. Maybe you have to make special requests to get this type of container for salads and sandwiches, because some came in it and some didn't, so ask when you go. A little hole in the wall deli that'll surprise ya! Not much to look at but they make a decent sandy and a fantastic chicken caesar, with sauteed chicken, onions, & peppers in a barely there scrumptious dressing. It's huge and filling! I only recently discovered this great back-to-the-basics deli, but I've been going bi-weekly ever since, each time finding some new unaccounted gem to appreciate either in food or experience. JB's is somewhat off the beaten path in the Portrero district, but the 22 bus rolls right past (although I would not recommend riding for even one stop on this hell-bound cesspool of degenerate fifth, especially if trying to build an appetite,) and also nearby are the California Culinary Academy and Whole Foods. (Connecticut Yankee and Thee Parkside are also within a few blocks if you need a beer on the patio to wash down your sandwich.) I must admit that I cannot really offer the most encompassing review of JB's, since I get pretty much the same sandwich every time, but damn is this sandwich good! Turkey on dutch crunch with provolone and everything-- boom. This is now my deliciously simple and plain lunch hour favorite. It always comes perfectly wrapped and intact, the veggies and meat evenly distributed, no frilly toothpicks or any of that. A sandwich is such a simple thing that it's really the subtleties that distinguish a great one. At JB's they have a way of assembling theirs so that it's the perfect union of care and chaos; you can tell they were thrown together quickly, but with attention to proportion and arrangement. One time I made the mistake of requesting light on the mayo, like I was going to crack a dent in my 4,000 calorie/day diet with that small and random revision, and it actually tasted dry. I still could see little traces of white though, so I knew it was there, they didn't just disregard the ingredient altogether like most places. I like that attention to detail, and the lack of pretentiousness. No herby aioli spreads, no foreign cheeses I can't pronounce-- just a good old turkey sandwich. The staff is also extremely friendly, the lines move fast, and my food has always been ready in less than the time they've promised. A nice clean interior with a good drink selection too. read more
