It's been many years since I've been to a Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams location so it was time to come back. I was in Highland Park on Saturday night with some friends so we headed over to Jeni's for some scoops of joy. This location isn't the biggest, but has a couple of tables to sit down at and a small area you can stand on the side of the counter. The flavour cases were packed over the weekend and it was a little overwhelming to pick, but guess what? I did, I picked my flavours like a big guy. I ended up getting a waffle cone with Texas Sheet Cake which might be the best ice cream I've ever had from Jeni's. It was super chocolatey, super rich, and tasted amazing. I got a scoop of Green Mint Chip which was pretty standard mint chocolate chip, but I very much enjoyed it. My final scoop was of Double Dough which is basically vanilla ice cream with chocolate cookie dough chunks in it, which also tasted pretty solid. Overall, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is a top notch ice cream joint and a place I'll never pass on visiting. Went because my friend wanted to try the Bridgerton flavors, like their Earl Grey Crème Brûlée. They had a surprisingly long line, I'm guessing because of the promotion, but the two ladies went through groups pretty quick! I like that you can try lots of flavors. Also being gluten free, I like that they label all their flavors, also for vegan, dairy free and nuts. So many great flavors, but their Texas sheet cake was amazing. Darkest chocolate also a banger (can you tell I like chocolate?). Getting there four scoops and splitting with friends also makes it a pretty good deal. Not much seating so a lot of people are standing around outside of it. But it smelled like pee so we left. I had a wonderful comical night. Saw a show at the lodge room and saw the tropical bloom sign on the way in outside jenis and decided to make it happen after. Lotta people inside, I was starting to feel like Larry David w the samples but I digress. The theme of my night has been everything happens for a reason. Maleah helped me and she's an absolute GEM! There was a seemingly odd combo on the board called Here comes the sun. Tropical bloom, banana cream pudding and bramble berry in a waffle bowl. I asked about the combo and she said she thought it was strange but it does work. I said screw it let's try it. The nights been wild already! In the meantime it slowed down and we started chatting. I told her about my wild night and she told me about a cool place to go walk, she cracked up about the devotion I have to my cat having his own Erewhon rotisserie chicken that no one's allowed to eat. Gotta love Jeni's! Deff a large chain at this point, but their quality remains consistent. This location was staffed by a bunch of lovely young people (god I sound old lol) but they did their job really well. Lots of samples and I settled on the cupcake and gooey butter? My boyfriend and I were in the area for dinner and Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream was one of the dessert options. We decided to check it out since it was one of the more unique options. There is a public lot right behind the ice cream shop that made parking easy for a busy area. There was also some street parking available. Jeni's ice cream is meant to be combined with their other flavors so they intentionally sell by half scoops so you can combine. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. They told us about their popular flavors, seasonal flavors, and offered us samples. We decided to go with their Standard ($7.75) which comes with 2 half scoops with the added Waffle Bowl ($1.75). My boyfriend picked the lemon bar and I picked the brown butter almond brittle, which complimented each other very well. The waffle bowl was a little stale and not as crispy as I would have liked but the flavors were still good. I really like that they have unique flavors and the textures were great. Wish they had more seating cause there was only like 3 tables inside and no tables outside. Ice cream is good to enjoy quickly before it melts. I've heard so many good things about Jeni's, but I haven't actually gotten to try it out until recently. People have always compared Jeni's to Salt and Straw, with more Jeni's opening up in the LA area. My friends and I were nearby eating and wanted something sweet to end the night. This location seemed to have opened up recently. This location is in LA/Highland Park - there's several small free parking lots but these fill up quickly. Love the interior of the store - brightly lit, welcoming, several chairs for customers but overall the store is quite small. I was able to try a few flavors but ultimately went with birthday cake and sherbet. They added a waffle cone slice on top, which was amazing. Flavors were light but creamy at the same time. Loved how much flavor was packed in each bite! I'm no ice cream fan, but I really enjoyed my dessert from here. Workers were quick to get through the line. Not the most friendly, but they probably were tired from a long day. tl;dr - must give Jeni's a try if you're into ice cream!! Or even if you aren't. Pricey but good. We were in the area for a bit so a friend recommended this place. Let me break down the review: Parking: Kinda sucks on the weekend, tbh. We had to park where Grocery Outlet was and walk a distance. So, keep that in mind. Usually there is parking behind the shop, but it gets hella crowded, very quickly. Shop: It's really small so it's not big crowd friendly. You can find a little seating inside, but it's really for one or two people in your party. Take the yums and jet. Flavors: Crazy flavors but they work. I got the brambleberry crisp and the sweet potato marshmallow. They work amazing together and they're pretty darn good separately. I highly recommend them. Overall: It's a great splurge for once in a while. It did cost almost $25 for two (me and my son, including tip). So it's not an everyday (or even every week) thing, but if you want something different and feel like splurging, this is the place you need to go. read more

This is definitely not the best Jeni's I've been to. I popped in with a few friends and had the customary sample or two. I went to the Beverly Hills location just two weeks before dropping by this one (because I was in the area) and I was sorely disappointed. Even though service was good and they were super patient while letting us try samples and choose flavors. I loved the gooey butter cake flavor at the other location, but this version tasted kind of like... stale ice cream if you know what I mean? Like the cake pieces in the ice cream had a really crumbly and unpleasant mouthfeel compared to the one at BH. I ended up settling for 2 half scoops of brambleberry crisp because that's the only one that kind of did it for me- but even that kind of had the taste of old ice cream (this is the best I can describe it). I found myself in Highland Park for a night out on Saturday. I love that this place is open late. My friends and I decided to get a sweet treat after leaving the bar. It is a clean and spacious location, we tried a few samples, and I ended up getting the goose tracks and the peanut butter flavor. Both were very yummy - but the goose tracks were my ultimate fav! It is made to be mass produced and sold for profit only. I repeat this is fake ice cream. This is the sad reality of these companies. They don't care about you or your well being. There are plenty of real ice cream companies that do care for your health and well being, Jenis is not one of them. Visited Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream on Figueroa on a hot summer day, and it was such a treat! Getting ice cream is already a treat in itself and the team members here just made it even sweeter. They were all so incredibly nice and sweet, which made my friend and I's experience even more delightful. They have such fun flavors here; choosing just one was tough! My friend and I were just so excited, we tried 3 samples each before setting on our favorites. I got the Lemon Bar flavor, which is dairy-free, and made with coconut cream. It's got the tart of the lemon and it was so decadent. It's punchy, and sweet, and it also gets bonus points for the little shortbread crumbles - my absolute fall-in-love kind of ice cream flavor I didn't know I needed. Jeni's never disappoints, and this visit was no different. I tried the Citrus Glazed Pound Cake and Tropical Bloom flavors and both were fantastic. The Citrus Glazed Pound Cake had the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with little bits of cake mixed in that made it feel more indulgent. Tropical Bloom was light, floral, and refreshing, almost like tasting summer in a scoop. They paired surprisingly well together. The service was friendly and patient even though it was pretty busy. I tried about 5 flavors and none of them had that deep rich flavor, they were all mostly bland. Also the flavors did not blend together well. At salt and straw they have unique flavors that you'd never think would go well together but they are mixed well and balanced and amazing, here it's like all ingredients were just thrown together without any balanced flavor which made some of them quite jarring when I tasted them. We got the waffle bowl with sparkling cherry pie, salted peanut butter, and tahini oat chocolate scoops. The sparkling cherry pie is exactly how it is described! You could taste the sparkling bubbly feel along with the cherry pie flavor - very unique! We thought the salted peanut butter is a bit on the sweeter side. We could only mostly taste the chocolate in the tahini oat chocolate so wish the tahini and oat flavors were stronger but overall it was great! Nice little ice cream shop in Highland Park. Great location on Figueroa, it's perfect dessert option with all the other restaurants around. Inside is a bright narrow space with a small seating area. So creamy thick and delicious. They give free samples so you know you'll like what you order. The lady at the counter was very friendly as well giving us her recommendations. I have lived in the Los Angeles basin for the majority of my life and thus know that LA is my land. Yet, I am surprised as to how much I do not know of my territory. Not because I am hermit, quite the contrary, I actively aim to experience my land, its just that my land is so expansive and evolving that to consistently know its pulse alongside its nooks and crannies requires time, attention, and knowledge that I do not have or can acquire. I am employed full-time, I get tired on weeknights, and traffic limits my perspective on what areas of LA are :"close" to me. And there is always laundry to do. But today, I went to explore a new LA area for me--- Highland Park, about an hour away from me with light Sunday traffic. Walking down Figueroa, I caught a whiff, a strong whiff of something that I could not deny. I am not sure if you ever experience the aroma of Cinnabon at the airport or mall, but the smell of glaze and freshly baked goods always created a hunger within me that I could deny, well, when I was young(er). Now that I am a bit older and wiser, I have developed the necessary restrain to not succumb. But today, I did succumb to a different type of aroma, and I was glad I did-- I smelled a Siren's song, but, instead of being led to a watery grave, I was led to Jeni's to experience ice cream that was indulgent, rich and thrilling. I was thrilled because I found a new ice cream spot that I am excited to become familiar with, one spoonful or lic at a at a time. I passed jeni's, and caught the aroma of something sweet--- too sweet to be ice cream (cause ice cream does not carry aroma) but ice cream it could be. I thought, delicious, for sure, I want to try it but health goals stopped me from entering. I continued walking but I did not make it far. Imagine that the aroma (a la cartoon) became a mist that took the shape of a hand. The hand used two fingers and carried me by my nostrils into the parlor. When it carried me, I glided happily, with a dopey grin on my face that stretched from ear to ear. I was not kidnapped by the aroma-fingers up my nose, to be clear. I was a willing victim, ready to sample just enough to taste what my nose enjoyed. When I entered I met Garrett. I informed him that I stopped in because of the aroma, and also that I had never heard of Jeni's. He nodded. I felt like a fool, once again over-sharing small details with service staff. But a few moments later he told me that I likely smelled the aroma of waffle cones. He informed me that they are made in-house. Yes, that was the aroma that I smelled: Fresh baked waffle cones. If you never experienced the odor, know that LA can still surprise you with the help of Jeni's. Garrett took the time to explain the difference ice creams to me, and their concept. He explained to me that Jeni's is a place that recommends, maybe thrives, with pairings. I am not going to lie, he named three ice cream flavors and together they would taste like Snicker's bar. Would that mean I would need three scoops? I did not ask. I did not want to know. Again, I was aiming to enjoy a treat without abandoning my health goals. I was going to allow my self one scoop, in a cone, so I could not learn too much of the pairings and their magical promise for then I might be tempted to cheat. I felt like a fashionista who only took 50 dollars in cash to a vintage store, so she could buy some gloves or maybe a hat, but she would not have the means to buy a whole outfit, even if she fell in love with one. The fashionista limited herself through strategy, I by will. We both practiced limits and balance. And that apparently is the key to enjoying life in a healthy way-- you know moderation. Garrett took the time to tell me about four of their most populars. I am. not going to lie, I do not remember the name of the quad of flavors. I do remember two--- the Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks and the Brown Butter Almond Brittle. I had a scoop of the Brown Butter Almond Brittle, and it was such a treat-- creamy, crunchy, and a sin that felt right to commit. Garret was prepared to offer me more samples. But, I had made my choice. My cone was also a small one, not a recently baked waffle cone. Garret was attentive, engaging (we exchanged names and pleasantries) and served scoops with joy. He added to the experience, and he should know that it matters because good service paired with rich ice cream is a pairing that I had at Jeni's even if I did not combine Salty Caramel and Honey Vanilla Bean to try to replicate the taste of slighthly toasted custard. Will definitely go back to try combinations and see what I can come up with, when I am ready to connect, marry, and produce. read more
