A .500 batting average is great in baseball - but not so much when it comes to a meal. Two of four meals had to be sent back. Based on the number of reviews using terms like "amazing", "wow" and "stunning" - it's had to believe our experience was so poor, maybe it was an off-night for Jim Barbarie's? To be fair - the staff was very understanding and immediately took both entrees off the check without question. They also bought us a round of drinks. That being said - half our party went home hungry. First problem was a burger that was ordered "medium" arrived very rare. Also, no onion rings, so that meal was a total write-off. The other issue was with the Chicken Francese; something my wife orders basically everywhere we go (she's a bit obsessed). The chicken arrived dry, without any sauce, and it looked a bit "beat-up", like it had been dropped a couple times. She settled for her side of pasta for dinner. My friends steak was very good. My Filet Medallions with Gorgonzola was also good, but unfortunately my shrimp with "JB's Signature Cocktail Sauce" was dry and unimpressive. read more

If you are gluten free or have anything food restrictions do NOT go here, unless you want to be thoroughly embarrassed. Went here for a holiday dinner with coworkers on 12/12/23, I asked if there were any gluten free options. The server was kind and said she'd ask. I'm assuming a manager came back with a response. I didn't get his name but he had about shoulder-length white hair. Very loudly, aggressively and obnoxiously said "no, no, no, we have nothing gluten free", as I tried to explain and ask if they can just make a steak in a clean pan he continued with "no, no, no" he didn't even listen to what I was trying to say and make the evening work out. Everyone was shocked by the response and I was left embarrassed. That is NOT how you talk to a customer. If he would have kindly and calmly said "I'm so sorry we can't accommodate you safely", I would have at least been able to accept it and enjoy the evening with my coworkers and be okay with not eating. I understand not all restaurants can accommodate allergies, but the response was uncalled for. You didn't want to "ruin Christmas" but your response was inappropriate. Just came with my husband to have seafood because it's Holy Week. Very disappointed. The food has no taste at all. My husband got the shrimp and chicken the chicken was rubber. This place has been around forever and that alone is testament to what a great establishment it is. It is a true "Steakhouse" from the old school. Big chairs, white table cloths, candles, etc. The food is delivered at fine dining pace so you can sit back and enjoy the conversation without feeling that the waiter needs the table to make his rent. They are known for their meat and seafood, both of which are great. I've never had a bad meal there and the staff treats you like gold. My favorite is the surf and turf - Nice juicy steak with a lobster tail. If you're really hungry get twin lobster tails. Wonderful. Business casual dress to dressed up is the norm here. Prices are steep so people going here are usually celebrating something or treating themselves to a special night out. The experience is worth the price. Parking is limited so I recommend using the valet unless you are in good shape for a walk. read more

We stumbled upon this place while shopping nearby. Since there's a lobster on the sign, We assumed it would be a seafood place. It seems the reputation is as a steak house. I think it's just more of an old school place, although unlike many institutions, it's been redecorated. Varied menu with all the classic surf and turf offerings. Bonus points for warm rolls and whipped butter. The wait staff was not perfect, but sincere and pleasant which goes a long way in my book. The entrees include a nice salad and choice of starches. Overall the value was pretty good. It's doesn't cost as much as a top notch steak house and you get what you pay for. Good, not great, but we'd go back again. read more

So disappointed - the food was just OK. The waiting staff was on the marginal side, and our drinks were as soft as the ones you get a shitty dive in Bridgeport. Expensive too! My family and I have recently dined here and I personally had a less then enjoyable experience. I had ordered the filet, it was dry and overcooked, it taste like it was cooked on a dirty grill, even the broccoli was disgusting. Out of the seven of us, only two people in our party were somewhat satisfied. My uncle had ordered the prime rib, it was the most atrocious piece of meat I have ever seen, he sent the steak back because it was too dry, the owner came over and offered to take it off the check, immediately after the waiter asked if he'd like to take it home in which he said he would give it to his dog. When the check was presented to us, the steak was still on there. When we asked the waiter why he explained since my uncle was taking the steak home they had given him a free desert instead. Bottom line this place is disgusting and over priced. I don't mind paying the price for a high quality meal but this place was subpar. To be honest I could have gotten a better steak/meal at Elmer's diner down the road for a fraction of the price. Will not be returning ... Ever. read more

Prime rib was excellent! But the real star of this review is Carl, the restaurant manager. Despite having a not so pleasant experience here in the past, my boyfriend and I decided to get it another try on a Saturday night , since that was a while ago. And we were VERY happy we did, we were greeted by Carl, whom with his pleasant demeanor and smile made us feel very welcome. And first impressions are everything! I have been to Jim Barbarie's a ton and I've experienced dining at its finest. So I must say, I don't understand any if the negative reviews. The food is usually great, the staff friendly, and the ambiance comfortable. Places may have bad nights, but JB's is far from one star. Lets go into the food first, then the specials... possibly one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life are JB's Stuffed Scallops... Seared scallops topped with a stuffing consisting of crab and sweet breading (I honestly think they used Ritz crackers!). Literally one of the best dishes I've ever had... And I've been around, trust me! They come standalone or as one of the options in the surf & turf menu. The Prime Rib is great, even better with their signature creamy horseradish sauce. If you can get there for the early bird, then it's possibly the best deal around! I've had it a few times here, it usually comes out rare to order, although once it came out overdone for my taste... I order rare and the middle is done right but the outside was well. Also, the size varies, once the early bird cut was small but then another early bird cut was bone in and massive! At the end of the day though, all were delicious! Every weekday, JB's offers a different lunch special... I had the Open Faced Prime Rib Sandwich in a Monday, and any Monday I'm in the area, I know where I'm getting lunch! They also have a $15 lobster lunch, I think on Wednesdays, and you get a full 1.25lb lobster with sides... Same thing you'll normally pay $40 for! I would say the best app is the Clam Steamers... A pound and a half of steamed clams, served in a seasoned broth with drawn butter and lemon. I would eat this every day if I could. It's not all great though, which is why I just can't bring myself to rate JB's a full five stars. Their take on Clams Casino is not for me... I expected it to be breaded like the stuffed scallops, instead I got baked clams topped with Bacon and drowned in butter. The salads are also usually drowned in dressing, so ask for it on the side. Their creamy peppercorn dressing is my personal favorite, when used sparingly! Yes, the decor is dated, but it's still quite comfortable. Yes, the menu is intimidatingly huge, but it's full of awesome dishes. Yes, it can get busy, but what good restaurant isn't? All in all, you're foolish to avoid Jim Barbarie's. Ordered a burger, well done and got it medium. Sent it back and same thing. Someone just put it under the broiler. Ordered drinks, wateted down and tastless. Atmosphere is for the blue haired group. Took my Dad for Father's Day (6/21/15) for a 4pm reservation in the bar area. We were told as soon as we sat that they only had 1.25 lb lobsters (they usually have up to 4 lbs). HUGE bummer. This is what you go to this place for. The food we did order was great- 16oz filet mignon was and the twin stuffed tails were excellent. Great French onion soup and clam chowder. Love this place! I go here frequently and have never been disappointed. Food and service is great. The menu is extensive and reasonably priced. Fish arrives daily and is as good as you can get on Cape Cod. Frank and Carl are great hosts. Ildiko and Marilyn are outstanding waitstaff. We always eat in the bar area for the local atmosphere. I came to Jim Barbarie's with my boyfriend, my friend, my friend's boyfriend, and my friend's parents for her birthday. We were seated right away and (I guess it was the owner?) came around periodically to check on us and he was very polite. Our waiter was equally polite (and patient) throughout our meal. We ordered appetizers, 3 orders of calamari, 2 french onion soups, and an order of clams casino. We also ordered our meals at the same time since everyone had decided. I went with the Wild Grilled Atlantic Salmon. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal, but the wait time was absolutely brutal. We waited at least a half an hour just for the appetizers. The salads came at least 15-20 minutes later, and the meal arrived over a half an hour after the salads. Besides the wait time, the food was great. I also enjoyed the atmosphere, it was not too loud and was very pleasant. I will definitely be coming back to Jim Barbarie's soon (hopefully with shorter wait times). read more

A decent place to eat dinner not too far from downtown Danbury. It has been open for 30 years give or take; started by its` namesake. As some have noted, the place is often crowded, particularly during the early part of the dinner hours. With some "early bird" specials that are pretty decent, ie Prime Rib, Shrimp Scampi, Chicken x & y, etc. These include soup and salad. JB`s decor is rather dated, with some updates. Staff could be improved upon, lack of customer focus. And most importantly, the food is only OK. It is by no means very good or great or any similar adjective. If you are exhausted or dragged here by co-workers, it does the trick. But most of these meals, you can make easily at home and do a better job ! read more

Went for dinner a couple weeks ago with an old friend who has not lived in Connecticut for quite some time. He insisted on Jim Barbarie's (for nostalgic reasons I'm guessing), I tried to talk him out of it but he wanted to go so we went (who am I to complain, he was paying). Yet here I am writing the review and it's not to praise, I am completely complaining. From the minute we walked in there were issues, we were completely ignored for the first 10 minutes while we waited patiently for someone to seat us. When someone did finally pay us some attention, our reservation, which my friend had made the prior day had not been recorded, therefore, we were asked to sit in the bar (they didn't even make an effort to get us a table in the dining room!) Then the waiter (I want to say his name was Zach), was rude and unaccommodating, actually told us we couldn't order the brussel sprouts the way we wanted them, that they had to be prepared as the menu stated (I only wanted to omit bacon). It was like pulling teeth to get drinks ordered or anything for that matter (we didn't see him much), we didn't even get offered a dessert menu. The next time we did see our so called waiter he basically threw my doggie bag at me at the end of the night (not an exaggeration). He sucked. As for the food, it was awful. My friends Tuna was prepared terribly and was a terrible cut, it was skinny and GRAY! Me on the other hand had eggplant parm (I know, I know I was at a seafood/steak house, but I don't eat much meat), I won't complain about it because it's not fair. I was more upset over my dinner dates fish! The whole experience sucked and my friend agreed he should have listened to me when I suggested a few fantastic local restaurants who take pride in their business and not just take their customers for granted. She ignored us over and over. other tables finished and received their bill before us and she took care of them even after just asking for our bill. A review for the bald guy. Last night was my second dinner at this establishment. We ate there in July for our anniversary. The food was very good in July. I suspected that the bald guy had insulted me but thought maybe I was being sensitive. We returned there for my birthday dinner last night. I had not imagined having been insulted in July as he did it again. After pointing me to a booth, he came running after me obviously being of the opinion that I would not fit in the booth. He was embarrassed when he realized that I knew exactly what he was implying. He then asked for a kiss and called me "baby". This is the second time he has insulted me, Message to bald guy - I fit in the booth with plenty of room to spare. You need not concern yourself about this again as I will not be occupying one of your booths ever again nor allow you to insult me again. Your behavior is unprofessional and unacceptable. Do yourself a favor and take an etiquette class. You have also just lost a very good customer. I will spend my money elsewhere. To say that the food was bad last night would be an understatement. Our expectations were high after our July dinner. My lobster roll was terrible. The lobster was rubbery, tasteless and the roll was waterlogged. I asked for crispy fries and they were too soggy to eat. My husband's seafood casserole was also rubbery, waterlogged and tasteless. His steak was all gristle and bone. I checked in to Barbarie's for dinner on 6/22 with my wife. We went early, about 5 PM, for the specials ($13.95), which we enjoy. I had the chop steak and my wife had the stuffed chicken breast. We each had mashed potatoes and vegetable. The dinners come with salads. I usually love their dinner rolls but this time they were clearly microwaved. Please use the ovens not Chef Mike! We can tell! When my family and I lived nearby, this is where we went for special occassion meals that didn't break the bank. Food quality is good, service is nice too. It can get loud, but kids are allowed which helps to contribute to it. Three stars because we had a big party and I know that's a challenge. That being said if my food and service was an indication of their usual I'd give 2 stars. Food was meh. Not great not good. Steak was over cooked slightly and had to send the first one back due to the mushroom sauce over the top...which I asked them to hold. One bright spot was the béarnaise...it was damn good and made their average steak tolerable.
