This place is the real deal. I love love love the short rib sandwich. The meat was melt in your mouth good. The sandwich was simple and sweet. It wasn't over douse with sauce or gimmicks. The meat was perfectly seasoned; the meat was the rock star! The sweet crunchy pickles were the perfect palate refresher to allow each bite of the sandwich to feel like the 1st. The good: - Large selection of delicious quality deli meats and cheeses and an assortment of gourmet foods - Fantastic and large selection of desserts. My coconut cupcake had the best frosting (soft and creamy and not too sweet) and was only $3 - Clean and bright and everyone who works there is so polite and friendly The bad: - Very little seating which sucked because we wanted to eat lunch - Parking is crap. Yes there is a lot in the back but they were constantly announcing over the loud speaker for someone to move their car as it was blocking someone else. Too much hassle. Go for a spot on the side streets. - The sandwiches were not worth how much they cost. In comparison, the sandwiches at Cuvee (on Robertson) are very big and come with a side salad of your choice for the same price. Here you get no side salad, a smaller sandwich and only a few measly slices of pickles (which were good but really, gimme some more!). Not a good value. I am willing to pay for really tasty food but this was only so-so. Overall I think this place is great to stop in and grab some deli stuff or a delicious cupcake/slice of cake/pie etc. but not great for having lunch due to the overcrowding and lack of seating and the overpriced fare. I once had a sandwich at Joan's, and it was perfectly fine. I don't like mayo, so I always read sandwich descriptions to ensure there isn't any mayo that I need to ask to be held. There was none listed under the sandwich I chose, and yet it arrived smothered in the white stuff, hence my mediocre feelings about their food. Joan's wasn't what I expected. It's big, has a bakery, a grocery store, and a cafe all in one. Super cute and clean shop. They have both indoor and outdoor seating as well. After I browsed the store, which had the usual salads, yogurts, and fruits for those on the go. I went over to the baked goods counter. They have some amazing, unique pastries. I chose the dark chocolate bouchon, chocolate coconut cupcake, and a peanut butter and jelly bar. Needless to say, I tried a little of each. The dark chocolate bouchon was reminiscent of a dark chocolate brownie. It was okay. I enjoyed the top layer of the PB & J bar, but the bottom half was drier. Finally, I chose the recommended chocolate coconut cupcake. They had a great choice of Snickers, red velvet (also recommended but I decided not to go with it), pumpkin, etcetera. This is in some respects very much like a mini Dean & Deluca.....but in other respects not. So yes, the people that come to shop here are perhaps on the snottier side and the space is so tiny that you're rubbing (or in some cases - jabbing) elbows but the two things that will definitely bring me back: 1. The amazing, high quality food that is complete eye candy and tastes equally yummy. The cheese counter alone was luscious, and makes my mouth water just thinking about it, and this is coming from someone with a major sweet tooth!! 2. The super super super nice staff. We ordered a bunch of items (salads, roasted vegetables, pate, cornichons, cupcakes) for a picnic and the woman helping us was lovely and made sure that we had all the utensils and napkins we needed as well as some sliced baguette for our pate. Joan's on Third is one of those trendy LA cafes that everyone has to visit at one point or another. They have almost everything in one place... breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, a little marketplace with their own packaged food, unique items and ingredients. I decided to make a quick visit on my own while in the area one day. The line during lunch can get pretty long, but note that you can order from both sides of the cafe. I had their famous Short Rib Sandwich ($12.50) with melted jack cheese, arugula, and red onions. It was a really good combination and tasted amazing, but still overpriced in my book. I also had their Citrus Slushy, which was almost like an orange juice smoothie. It was really refreshing, but also overpriced. My lunch (a sandwich & drink) ended up costing me a total of $18, which is pretty ridiculous. I still like this place so I'd probably only come back on rare occasions. Free parking is available in the back alley, but very limited. read more

This place will get 5 stars as soon as it expands...that's the only downside. Otherwise, what's not to love. I come for my favorite sandwich. Apricot glazed and ham with double creme Brie. Order it on the baguette. It's amazing. I have yet to try most of the food but I do remember that the mac n cheese was great. Cupcakes are good too. No red velvet but the chocolate with marshmallow creme and the coconut are pretty good. They also have a great cheese selection and a very knowledgable fellow more than willing to educate you about the fine cheese as well as give you samples. Parking is bad...and seating is limited. Definitely try to call in your order otherwise you'll be there a while. I know, it sounds negative, but people come back for a reason. read more

I think I found my new favorite sandwich shop. This place is great! All kinds of sandwiches and items to choose from, even goodies. Joans is also a cheese shop. The staff is very attentive. The place is super clean. I went on a Sunday early afternoon and we got a seat and our food all in good time. I ordered the grilled maple rosemary chicken breast sandwich on french baguette. The chicken sandwich was so good. It also came with a tiny cup of thinly sliced pickles. Our other sandwich was the apricot glazed ham and brie which was also really tasty. For dessert, I shared a brownie which was really fudgy, rich, and just all around great. For two sandwiches, two drinks, and a brownie it ran about $30.. a little pricy for sandwiches BUT well worth it! Ill definitely be back soon read more

What a great deli/sit down eatery/tchotchke place! I'm so happy my friends brought me here and super happy that we actually found a parking spot literally right in front (super score!). After ordering sandwiches, we sat down and waited. We were also lucky to find seats for four people all together inside at one of the long tables. The tables weren't very clean and we had to ask for napkins and utensils, but that was fine. The service was great as far as how nice everyone was and efficient with the amount of people that were in there. Unfortunately, they seem a bit too popular for the amount of patrons and so it was a bit on the slow side. Although we all ordered at around the same time, the sandwiches came out at widely varying times. Also, an ordered tea came out after we were pau eating. The food was superb and I was very satisfied. Although I'm quite cheap when it comes to food, I think the price was fine for what I got (tuna melt). I was upset when this teen next to me ate only half her sandwich and didn't take the rest home. My friend goes "That's spoiled LA kids for you." Boo! I dunno if that's an LA spoiled kid thing or just that girl, but I hate food wasters (esp good food wasters!). Hallelujah I hit the jack pot with this one! After circling around the area a few times for parking, we decided to just park in the Beverly Center parking garage and walk over. Best decision ever on a Saturday afternoon. I walked into some serious food paradise. There's a coffee and dessert area, bfast/lunch area, a bakery, and a market all packed into this one place. I mean, honestly, how great is this place?! Joan's was packed, but we managed to swoop a table. SCORE. We ordered our sandwiches. But let me just warn you, while you're waiting in line, you're going to be tempted by the mouth-watering a la carte items on your right. TIP: Ask for samples and you won't be sorry. I got the Grilled Vegetables and Goat Cheese sandwich on a french baguette. So fresh and so good. Finally a vegetarian sandwich I would choose over the meat lovers sandwiches I usually get. My friend got the Apricot Glazed Ham and Brie sandwich. Mmmm mmm delicious. No complaints there. I also got the Sesame Sake Chicken Wings--two words...get them. Soooo all of this wasn't enough. We had our eyes on the dessert and coffee across the way. We did what any normal human being would do (right?). Joan's on Third is a classic Los Angeles joint offering baked goods, prepared foods, sandwiches, and pretty much all items that come to mind when you think of the word "cafe." And they are offering some pretty high quality in terms of production, and keeping prices low, to boot. Additionally, much of the grub is unique, what with the strawberry buttermilk muffins, assorted cookies, and random breakfast fare. I took a shot with the rather odd-looking honey-bran muffin, and it was pretty awesome, if not overly sticky. When the guy who helped me mentioned honey, I had no idea what to expect. This sweet piece of baked goodness actually had that sugar-crisp on the exterior that comes from an abundance of honey being baked to a crunchy texture. Yeah, and it was chock full with dried blueberries. The clientele is undoubtedly ritzy, and there is a somewhat overwhelming sense of hustle and bustle--at least in regards to a low-key bakery--but all of this can be death with because of the phenomenal goods coming out of the kitchen. I really like this place. It has a great casual atmosphere. You walk up to the register to order and they bring your food to your table. I have been here for breakfast twice and both the pancakes and french toast were tasty. However, I will note that the portions are on the smaller side (I cleaned my plate). The bakery goods are also delicious and unique. They have a cloud cupcake which is a chocolate cupcake covered with a marshmallow meringue topping covered with dark chocolate. YUM! This place is always packed and I hear such good things. I finally got the chance to try it today and I was definitely not disappointed! I ordered the apricot glazed ham with brie sandwich on wheat bread - it's a huge sandwich and very filling. I'm saving my other half to eat for lunch tomorrow. It was really good but I expected it to be on the sweeter side since it had "apricot" in the name but it's still good nonetheless. This was one of the best meals I've ever had! Maybe I was just extremely hungry come brunch time, but my Eggs Benedict was the real deal. The environment is perfect -- a mixture of a cafe, market and restaurant. The lighting is industrial and the atmosphere is beyond aesthetically pleasing. My boyfriend claims it's the "best breakfast sandwich" he's ever had, and my meal was right there with it. Even better, for an LA meal, it wasn't that pricey, especially for the caliber of the food. Third street between Fairfox and La Cienega is one of my favorite place to shop in the US. I love little independent boutiques, cafes and restaurants. When I was living in LA, I even considered moving to Park LA Brea for that reason. Joan's on 3rd totally fits the area. I always thought we needed place like Joasn's there. They are high quality selective specialty food shop. I agree with many of their selections. I am a fan for a lot of things, but mostly the salt and straw ice cream cart! I fell in love with salt and straw in oregon and loved all the flavors I had there. I recently got the rhubarb pie and it was amazing! I also like the trio of salads you can get at joan's. I have yet to have a bad salad there and i love you get to pick which ones you want. First time here and I loved it! It's such a fun place! The inside has some seating but it is like a mini market inside - there is the salad and sandwich bar, a bakery area, and they sell random treats that are made in their kitchen. It's a really fun place to go for lunch/brunch with the girls. I went with a friend and shared the short rib sandwich and the maple chicken sandwich - both are really good! But the short rib is definitely my favorite. It's a simple, fast, and tasty lunch spot that's really fun to walk around afterwards! Great sandwiches - on recommendation i went with the turkey meatloaf and was not disappointed. a bit pricey, but everything around here is. You're looking at about 10 bucks for a sandwich, no sides included. Bacon brie chicken press was also good, but not as delicious as meatloaf! Butternut squash pear soup had no hints of pear but was really tasty, anywho. Also loved our cheesecake slice for dessert, but gotta say i wasn't very impressed by my cup of coffee. lots of outside seating and the catering staff was super friendly and let us park for free behind the catering van and came to find us when they needed us to move it later on. so we didn't have to deal with the meters on christmas eve. the annoying part is figuring out what you can pay for at each counter and trying to get in and out efficiently. the lines can get a little confusing and rounding up all your items can be quite a task. we settled on buying our meal in installments, which worked out for the better i think. props for all the free pickle slices too - i think we got about 6 extra containers! read more

Delicious, healthy food, in a nice setting reminiscent of a classy, clean Hamptons kitchen. I love Joan's. Probably my favorite place to have lunch when working. Their couscous sides are delicious, and to tell the truth, I never had something I didn't like there. I know some other Yelpers have said the customer service (especially table service) is less than stellar. My experience has been that the cashiers have always been more than pleasant and helpful. I personally don't expect table service, the same way I would from a restaurant that seats you, then has a server take and bring your order. It's like McDonald's - your order, get a number, you find a place to sit... why would I think they'd give me full table service??? Service (or lack thereof) aside, I really do love Joan's. YES, it's a bit pricey... I have a problem paying $12 for a sandwich that doesn't even come with a hint of a side. I guess those pickles are supposed to make due. I LOVE the cupcakes. The vanilla cupcake is one of the best I've had - perfectly dense with the right amount of crumb. However, sometimes you get a less-than-moist one which sucks. The raspberry cupcakes is less than awesome and I wouldn't even bother. I agree, it IS a bit overpriced (like the ridic price for OATMEAL and YOGURT)... but WORST part are the freaking sodas. $1.50 for a can of Diet Coke. You devils, you. I usually give places benefit of the doubt for somewhat higher prices like this (maybe the ingredients cost more) but at $1.50 for a can of Coke, there's some serious inflation there... which leads me to think, what other prices are they padding here? I still think the food (aside from the price) is tasty, fresh and definitely perfect for a lunch or afternoon picnic. It's just very "LA" and something I've grown to accept. read more

The celebrity-haunted Joan's is located on the quaint Third Street, which has great local boutiques (if you can afford it!). It's LA, so yes, please expect overpriced food and difficult parking. I know everyone tends to gripe and complain but hey, don't come if you're not willing to deal with it. It's within its nature. Tip: I'd recommend trying the back, which seems to have more parking. Plus, better chance of spotting those celebrities you know you came to see! A friend and I came here and were impressed by all the different things they have. No wonder it's popular! Everything was neatly displayed in a very sophisticated fashion. However, we ordered the chicken salad and argula with pine nuts, and I was disappointed that it was merely okay. I know it's LA, but for it's price and rep, I expected something relatively superb. The chicken was way too heavy and thick, and the argula was too plain and uninspiring. It was pretty much a plate of light vinagrette, argula, and pine nuts. My best friend and I ended up sharing a little bit of both as one was too heavy and the other too light. Maybe I'll give Joan's another chance when I'm back in the neighborhood, but for now, there is nothing special calling my name! read more

I ate at Joan's for my birthday breakfast. Was lucky enough to snag a table for my party of 7. This is a REALLY cute place. I felt like a kid in a candy store. Decent breakfast and lunch menu. Friendly staff that will go out of their way to allow you to sample things and make recommendations. It really makes the dining experience better when you feel that the employees actually enjoy their jobs. Important to note that you order first, THEN find a table. I actually liked this method b/c I didn't have to wait to be seated. I had the french toast with a side of potatoes. Both were yummy. Followed that up with two cupcakes to go - vanilla with chocolate frosting and a chocolate coconut cupcake. They were also both pretty good (The chocolate coconut in particular). I like these type of places. It's the type of place where you can get coffee and dessert. They also serve tasty sandwiches and salads. It's great for people watching. We got our food pretty quickly considering how packed it was. We had the thinly sliced mortadella sandwich, the prosciutto de parma sandwich, a mushroom pasta salad, and the coconut cupcake. All items were great. I really liked my mortadella sandwich because the baguette was nice and crisp but not overly hard. (I hate when the bread is so hard that it hurts the roof of my mouth!). If you like places like Dean & Deluca where you can get different types of cheeses and other gourmet foods, then you'll definitely like this place.
