This is so not my kind of place. I hate TVs, and televised sports. And this place has TVs DRIPPING from every surface. I think they're probably working on getting TVs installed on the floor. You can't go there and miss a single second of the game. You can probably see the image of the game reflecting from your date's face. So why do I go here? Simple. The 10c wings on Sundays and Mondays RULE. They're so damn good. I just wish you could get them outside of the bar. If you have stones and the cook has a sense of humor that night, get the extra hot ones. They'll make you cry, unless you grew up in India or have invested in some serious beer. I'm not in Waltham frequently enough to be a regular at John Brewer's Tavern but I enjoyed myself the few times I ate there. The food doesn't send me over the moon but there are some solid "homestyle" choices on the menu: meatloaf, turkey and mashed potatoes and stuffing, and chicken pot pie, plus the usual burgers, appetizers and desserts. The prices are what you'd expect. I like John Brewer's for what it is: the food's OK, the surroundings are pleasant, and the restaurant attracts a local crowd. I like John Brewer's because it's in a freestanding building and not part of a strip mall. I don't like all the TVs constantly blasting sporting events but I like that the bar isn't filled with college kids. I like that John Brewer's is a place to go with friends for a reasonably priced meal that's not Chili's or T.G.I. Friday's. Most of all, I like that John Brewer's is only about twenty minutes from Allston-Brighton by car--not far by normal standards but by New England reckoning, it may as well be the other side of the world. .50 wings on Sunday and Monday is a damn good deal especially if there's a game on. One thing that I really like about this place is that if you ask for your fries or wings well done, they will actually do it and they come out nice and crispy. I can't even count how many places screw this up. Beer selection is solid and they do up the frites glasses which is a nice touch. Plenty of parking is also nice if your sick of trolling the moody street bars where it's damn near impossible to find street parking. Needed a place to watch my lowly Cincinnati Bengals today with a few other loyal Bengals fans. You know how hard it is to find a place that will broadcast a Bengals game? And I don't blame any sports bar for laughing at the request. A lot of sports bars have Direct TV -- so they'll play every game. But how many of them play the audio with each game? Not a lot. We did plenty of calling around. Sure, we could watch it at home. But it's a lot more fun at a sports bar. John Brewer's Tavern had the game. They've got individual TVs in every booth. We watched the Bengals game. And the Bengals lost the game (as usual). But we're used to it. Food was great. The wait staff was awesome. Free parking. Prices were very low. So I have had very mixed experiences here at John Brewers. Ranging from horrible to pretty good. But never great. But with low prices and 20 cent wings (without the New Landing roaches) I tend to frequent regularly and reluctantly. 1. The beers are warm and they seem to run out of glasses ( yes a bar run out of glasses) crazy! 2. The 20 cent wings. A good deal and the wings are decent in size. They give you plenty of blue cheese but are very skimpy on the veggies. Last time I got a total of four pieces ( 3 carrots and 1 celery) the veggie add on costs 75 cents. Not worth it at all. They have 3 sauces. Buffalo ( not spicy at all), Honey Buffalo (It is just weird and tastes like chemicals) and BBQ. I go with Buffalo but they are nothing special just the price is good. 3. Their diet Pepsi is ALWAYS flat and gives me a tummy ache. 4. They have great mixed drinks. The problem is they always seem to be missing the ingredients to make the ones listed in their menu. It's a bummer! 5. The wait and bar staff are hit or miss. Last week they where super attentive and great. A month ago they forgot my friends meal. When she asked about it the waitress had canceled it. She did not ask for it to be canceled. The waitress yelled at her and we got the manager. She got a free meal rightfully so and we have never seen super mean and nasty waitress again. 6. The one and only time we got takeout the entire order was wrong and cold. I went in for lunch with my friend on Saturday Afternoon and the place was pretty quite with not that many people. No complain about that. They have lots of waitress staff however they tested us like we were not there. Only once waitress came to check if the food was ok and if we need more drinks. And since restaurant was pretty slow all staff was chit cheating next to the kitchen so I had to wave my hand so we can get a check. Ridiculous. The meal was not bad. Like the mozzarella sticks, I think for $6.95 seven sticks are pretty good price. I wish it would come with more sauce but u can always ask for more;) Burger was pretty good, juice and seasoned. I was not impressed with fried at all. It was very very lightly fried and was bla no flavor nothing. $9.95 was a good price tho. Steak was great. That was my favorite food we good. It was perfectly cooked, juicy, seasoned, very good. The price was amazing $12.95 . It comes with grilled vegetables but they were bad, uncooked and u only getting carrots and zucchini. Not seasoned at all. I really like mashed potatoes. Creamy, love that they left a bit of skin. In overall it's an average place. It has good food as well as bad. Nothing special. read more

Tonight we ordered two double orders of chicken wings. Honey Buffalo and garlic parmesan. It came to $ 45 plus a $5 tip. We picked it up as it was take out. Upon arrival home we couldn't believe it. These Wings were the driest we have ever tasted. They obviously were sitting around too long. John Brewers has a hell of a nerve selling food like this. Very disappointed in my latest meal there. I ordered a Patriot Burger med-rare, what do I get a well done semi-hockey puck style burger. I told the server who is too fast with everything he was doing, that is was very over cooked. I was already in a pissy mood and I didnt want to wait for another burger, so I told him not to worry, I will eat it anyway; he gave me a messed up look and shook his head and walked away. He sent the manager over, told him the same story, so they took it off the bill. My son had the chicken pot pie, thought it said it came with a side on the $9.95 Menu, apparently not, he ate it said it was good but a little thin. Got to sit outside on the outdoor patio on a warm spring day. Coming off of a long night the night before, we all dug into the bar food off of the menu. Potato skins to start with - these suckers were huge. I had the roast beef sliders. Not as rare as they state on the menu but the rolls were toasted which was nice. The burgers looked great. The fish tacos also got a rave review. I wouldn't really have thought of John Brewers as the place for fish tacos, guess I was wrong. Some basic beers and iced teas to go around. Service was fine. There were even two servers out on the patio and they kind of tag-teamed each other. Bathrooms are typical of a bar. Nice, laid back place. read more

I must update my review and knock off a star since they changed their menu. They now have the exact same menu and pricing as their sister restaurant in Newton. That is really too bad because they removed some of my favorite go-to dishes. I also liked that they were slightly different places and felt they deserved different menus. This is boyfriend and I's go-to place. 4/5 times we go out for a meal (we prefer to cook unless utterly too tired or on our way out or on our way back from an adventure), its this place. They have a surprisingly great menu and I whole-heartedly love the theme of the place. Colonial Boston red, white, and blue everywhere. But more importantly, I love that they have pictures of The Town of Waltham's baseball team from the 50's, women's bowling teams from the 70's, etc. I really like it. The food is always great. I've never been dissatisfied by my service OR the food. Their house veggie side is to die for....I know it sounds weird, its just a side of veggies but to make crisp tasty side veggies..never overdone or bland...is something to be celebrated. Came here on Sunday. Fryolator was broken so no wings. As a matter of fact, half of the menu was unavailable. I asked the waitress what looked good coming out of the kitchen. She said steak tips. I ordered mine medium rare w a Caesar salad. Well, the Caesar sucked but the tips were AWE-some. Waitress also suggested the cookie sundae. That was also a winner. A friend of mine lives very close to here, so we walked over the other night for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the veggie wrap as it was reccommended by my friend. the flavors were tasty but the sandiwch got a little soggy with the balsamic marinade in there. Also ordered sweet potato fries which were cooked nicely, just crispy enough. this place was defiitely crowded on a Friday night but is a convenient spot for pub food and a good atmosphere. Did their kitchen run out of salt? Because that's what it felt like. The Tavern Burger was not seasoned at all, and it wasn't juicy like some of the other reviews had said. The fries on the side weren't seasoned either, and the copious amount of ketchup couldn't even save it. The fries - something else was off. It was lightly fried so the thinner pieces were crispy and the others weren't. It was like eating unseasoned potatoes. The pubskins (potato skins) were okay. The potatoes were not hallowed before putting the toppings on, so there really weren't much toppings on there. The saving grace was they served my water with a lemon wedge. read more

Finally found our bar! We went to check this place out last week and was thoroughly impressed. Huge location, though just the bar and dining room connected to the bar were open. We were greeted and served our drinks right away, and the bartender was great. He was fast and efficient with everything he was doing, and not bad to look at either. We got potato skins which were massive! We could only finish a couple of them, but they tasted and felt like they made them right then, not like it was pulled out of a freezer and warmed up. Mostly college guys watching the game when we went, but we noticed that you could watch the game at personal TV screens at all the booth seating which is something we hadn't seen before. I've eaten here multiple times in the past and have never had any complaints, until recently when I've started getting takeout. Got the brewers mac and cheese and it was mostly chicken with little pasta, too much breading, and dry. Also ordered some cornbread and it was basically the scraps that they didn't want to throw away. I would probably go back into the restaurant because you get seated quickly and the staff is pleasant, but as far as takeout? Probably not. read more

Went here for the first time. Food was average and a bit bland. Waitresses are friendly and really beautiful. My dessert was missing some components as advertised on the menu. When I brought this to the server's attention, she brought out the missing items but was not apologetic and had no explanation. I had to ask for additional napkins when dessert came. My placemat had been dirtied by the dinner. It was not replaced when the dessert came. It was obviously stained/wet and the server placed the to-go bag right on top of it. The old Ground Round site is getting in touch with its roots here in Waltham. This sports bar is a colonial style tavern and restaurant with Revolutionary War pride written all over it. The figurehead/mascot of the restaurant, if you will, is a Revolutionary War hero complete with a powdered wig and a cap likened to that of George Washington's. This place is not a typical chain, although they do have a second location that's a bit more upscale. All-in all they've stuck to their roots and kept the menu nearly entirely the same. It's a great spot for an inexpensive beer and a hefty and filling, yet low cost burger, but overall you can get just about whatever you want from a chicken pot pie to a turkey dinner to a phenomenal chicken quesadilla (Yes, a sports bar with good quesadillas. This was our first time and Mike, our server, provided great service (he is in training). I wanted shrimp pesto pasta but it wasn't available since this was a special. Mike went into the kitchen to ask and they were able to do this special so thank you for accommodating. It was good. This is a nice place for the evenings that you want to get out but don't want to make a big fuss of things. The bar area has good space, several TVs, and is dimly lit (in a good way). I like the selection of "home style" favorites (meatloaf, chicken pot pie, chili, etc.) and the beer selection is better than average, without being exciting. For me this place is all about comfort and ease, and it takes care of that very nicely. I'll be happy to keep coming back every so often. I haven't done so yet, but I can picture myself at the bar watching an afternoon college football game...and really enjoying things! read more

My husband and I had dinner here back in April. We were very disappointed and he contacted them via email immediately after. NO RESPONSE. I contacted them via email, one month later and NO RESPONSE! We visited the tavern for dinner on April 27th, nearly a month ago. He ordered one of the specials which was the steak tips with a stuffed Portobello mushroom. He discussed with the server the difference in size between the $17.95 special and the one pound size. We were told he could upgrade for a charge but since the difference we were told was only a few ounces he decided to go with the special. When it arrived, we were blown away by the mere 3, yes 3 small pieces of steak tips on the plate. Had we known the dish was so skimpy, he would have ordered something else. What is most upsetting is that we were told the serving for the special was 12 oz. Clearly she was misinformed, did not know what she was talking about, or the kitchen made an error. There is no way that what we ordered and paid for was 12 oz. I wound up giving my husband most of my meal as I was the one who ate the stuffed mushroom, not him. To have spent almost $18.00 to get three pieces of meat is beyond upsetting. To not even get the courtesy of a response to our emails is even more upsetting. We like to support local businesses whenever we can but the food here was below average, service pretty much the same and overall value for the money was less than disappointing on a good day. Save your money and go someplace else. With owners who clearly don't value their customers and cannot muster up the courtesy or an apology or even acknowledge the emails we sent, we will surely not ever return. I will however, let my circle of contacts know how disappointing this experience was and hopefully they will chose to spend their hard earned money at some other place. read more

I ordered takeout burgers. My burger, with cheese, bacon and side of onion rings came out to $14.95. for that price I usually expect a high quality, juicy burger cooked to temperature. I would also expect quality onion rings with some sort of sauce. The burger was dry, kind of overcooked. The onion rings were cheap frozen onion rings and came with no sauce. The bread underneath was soggy and I don't even understand how because the burger was super dry. Anyway, it was edible. But it was fast foodish and certainly not worth almost $15. I prefer to go to Lee's burgers, they're half the price and twice the quality. I'm disappointed and I won't be ordering from here again. I judge an American cuisine restaurant by its burger and this one is not worth going back to imo. read more
