We finally came here tonight. We pass it all the time and even poked our heads in one night while waiting for take-out from Wacky Wok. Tonight we wanted someplace quick but not fast food, so we met here. We ordered the Caesar salad and a pizza with Canadian bacon. We always order our pizza with extra sauce and easy cheese. The Caesar salad was great. The lettuce was crisp and fresh and the dressing was very garlicky. We both liked this. The pizza was also good. The extra sauce was right on, but the easy cheese was still too much cheese and a little greasy. They explained that the extra sauce made the cheese kind of rise up but it was still a little oily. The crust was good and crispy. We enjoyed our first visit here and learned that we need to order very easy cheese. We are looking forward to coming back and trying the pizza with less cheese. My experience with Johnnie's has always been great! I don't do take out or go to the restaurant I always order delivery and it comes perfect every time (knock wood). We ordered a large half pepperoni half Mediterranean and it was delicious. I love the thin New York crust; plenty of toppings & huge. What more do you need? This was our game time meal (USC/UCLA) Placed our order via the website for pick up - after we placed the order, we noticed it was a third party website. Good thing we didnt enter any credit card info and used cashed. A couple of minutes after we sent the order, we got a confirmation call from them. The odd thing was after the order was placed online it wasnt told to us when it would be ready, and the person that called to confirm didnt tell us a pick up time. It was my first time having pizza from here - I was surprised the pizzas were so big, it should be for the price. Pizza was good, was it NY standards? Couldnt tell ya, I've only been to NY once and that was a few years ago so I dont recall. But it was good. Was it the best pizza I've ever had? About once a year we will drive the 10 miles to get here for their NY WHITE PIZZA with adding mushrooms and chicken. The guys at the counter were very friendly - we did dine in hence our order taken at the table. Were several customers coming in for pick-up or to order to-go in which the staff knew by name. Got, "Thank yous" from both counter people as we exited. Will be back again. The parking lot can be full as sharing it with the other businesses - we did get the last spot available - but notice folks do leave (can quickly be taken). I personally love this place. I mean yeah.. it's on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for. Their pizza is delicious, I love the thin crust. The ham and pinapple is my favorite, but I'm always down with the classics like the pepperoni or the plain ole tomatoes and cheese. I've been to another Johnnies on 3rd street in Santa Monica and the pizza there was ok but this one is way better. Both food- and service wise. Probably because of all the busloads of tourists that's hanging out on there. I actually wanted to comment on what some other yelper said about the service and one of the cashiers/waitresses; every time I've gone there, Vida (as mentioned by another yelper), has always been super nice to me. I was actually surprised to read that since she was the reason I decided to go on here and rate Johnnies in the first place. Man...soft wet dough..this is so far removed from NY pizza. Not even tasty. Just a mess of slopped on stuff....Pizza? Not even close...I was feeling too bloated to even write something more last night. It's the next day and I can't believe I even ate a few slices. I threw out the rest of the pie which I was planning to keep for the next day. Simply, this is not pizza. Years back I have had decent pizza at this place. Not great, but pretty good. What I was sent last night was a thick, gooey, oil-soaked mess, with the ingredients thrown on an over-cheesed, thoughtless prep. I'm giving them 5 stars strictly based on the pizza. My brother just brought some home from a trip out to Venice Today, let me just say it was by far one of the best slices I've had in a while! The dough was super airy with a great crunch it almost melts in your mouth... cheese, pepperoni and jalapeños tasted very fresh. Wanted to try Johnnie's other dishes and was craving pasta with meat sauce. Their pizzas are OK. Prefer Pizzarito NY pizza. Spaghetti w/bolognese sauce was actually pretty good. Eggplant Parmesan was tough, heavily breaded and fried. Mostly breading. Marinara sauce is pretty boring. Garlic knots, not good. Needs more garlic & salt. In conclusion, it's a chain. I'm writing this review at 4:00 a.m. because the Johnnie's mushroom pizza I ate late night gave me food poisoning. Two reactions to that pizza: my throat is has contracted (gagging reflex) as if my body is trying to reject what I put in it; and I have the big "d" which further indicates something rude entered my system last night. Johnnie's pizza is the only thing I ate (or drank), so I know it was the culprit. And no, I don't have any food allergies. I live less than a block away from this restaurant. I've come here for 20 years. But I noticed the ownership/management changed not too long ago. This used to be my favorite pizzeria, but no longer. Also, the price for a large 14" mushroom pizza has rocketed to $24.95. I walked 5 minutes to home as always, keeping the pizza horizontal. But when I got home and opened the carton, the cheese had run off the dough and onto the cardboard. I had never seen that ever from the previously owned and run Johnnie's... or any other Johnnie's on the Westside I've frequented. But no biggie, I thought. As I tried to pull the first slice from the pizza pie, it wasn't possible. The chef had not properly sliced the pie. I had to get out my own pizza slice blade to re-cut the dough properly. Again, no big deal, but the first time this occurred from this Johnnie's. As I bit into the slice, I noticed how thick and gummy the cheese was. The cheese did not taste like cheese either. It didn't taste good like "normal". Maybe it was some cheaper whey product processed to look like cheese, but it was work to chew it. This was not the recipe I had come to know and love from Johnnie's. I threw it out so my wife wouldn't come home and eat it. It was sub-par for anyone's pizza. So, only in my memories will the Johnnie's N.Y. Pizza will be a great place for pizza. It is no longer, sad to say. read more

I really dug the NY White (garlic sauce with mozz and spinach) it was just the right balance of ingredients, not too heavy in any one thing with a nice crust. The NY chopped salad was good... The woman that takes your order is extremely abrasive and scolds you for not ordering by the menu names. Had to call back to let them know I wanted delivery. "In the future when you order you need to make it clear whether it's pickup or delivery." I guess I expected the service professional on the other end of the phone to establish that clarity. This is one of my favorite pizzas. It's a chewy tasty thin crust with a brilliant sauce and great tasting cheese. I've been to the one at the Promenade, but I just like getting my here as it's faster with no crowd. You can watch them hand toss the pizza while you're waiting. They have an awesome italian chopped salad that I always get as well. They have several branches in So Cal and if you have a group or out with friends the Promenade location would be better. The salads are humongous!! Tried the chinese chicken salad and was surprised to be actually full by a salad. It was sweet and tangy. Definitely too much dressing, asking for the dressing on the side is recommended. They give you these garlic rolls with marinara sauce with your meal which are amazing! My girlfriend and I came here to eat some comfort food and heal from a long week... and weekend. Lol. This place sure hit the spot. We ordered the shrimp scampi pizza and the tomato basil garlic pizza. What pleased me is that we ordered one pizza but got to try two pizzas by putting both half and half. That was an awesome option. To add a little spice, we also ordered the shrimp diavolo pasta. It had a deep zesty taste that had a richness that blended with the pasta very naturally. I especially loved the slight heat that came up as well with each bite. This place is known for their pizza but they are also very very good with pastas so it is definitely an added bonus for those who would like that option. For me, this was not the end. I am on a "strict diet". I am watching what I eat and exercise more because, I'm 32 now and have got to be more wise in what I intake. However, I gave into my temptation, my nemesis, chocolate cake. My girlfriend gave me "the look" when I ordered it, telling me to stop eating T^T but after she had a bite, she said I made the right choice. It is rich and decadent, yet not too sweet that I am craving to drink milk or coffee. The balance and texture is perfect for a palate cleanse. Used to get this pizza a lot, and felt it was definitely the best pizza in the area (and I am an ex-NYer). But over the years I have gone increasingly low carb and have been avoiding pizza. However, last night my husband and I had a craving for their meatball subs, which we used to love, and figured we could just skip the bread and eat the insides. I ordered over the phone, for pick-up, and asked if I could get green salad instead of the pasta salad that comes with the sub - I was told rather curtly, no, this was impossible. Did not seem very customer service oriented at all. Well the meatballs, sauce and cheese were good, like I remembered - but it bugged me that they couldn't substitute salad (just plain greens - I didn't expect anything fancy) for the pasta - especially at the cost of $19 for two subs, which seemed kind of steep for what we got.
