Johnny's Kitchen & Tap is a lovely restaurant that seems to serve an older crowd, but it has a nice ambience and my husband and I enjoy having a sandwich or appetiser in the bar and people watching. On Saturday evenings there is a lounge singer and the patrons truly have a good time and enjoy their drinks. The bar has a good selection of drink specials throughout the week and a few food specials as well. This allows us to slip in an impromptu date without breaking the bank. I yo-yoed between 3 & 4 stars....3.5 is probably more accurate. I've yet to find a main course food item that is wonderful, but their appetisers, beer selection, and the general ambience of the establishment work for my husband and I, so we will continue to drop into the bar every now and then to enjoy the fun vibe. read more

I love some good wood-roasted chicken, and it's a specialty of this bar/ restaurant! I took it as a good sign when I could smell this place across the parking lot. It's a casual spot for American food, and is a little more upscale inside than I expected (it's in a strip mall, and I wasn't expecting much). Menu is comprised of steaks, chops, ribs, burgers, pastas and sandwiches. I was a little worried when my husband ordered swordfish (one of the specials), but he reported that it was excellent. My quarter chicken was tender and tasty. Portions are huge here, so come hungry. Our waitress was excellent; checked on us often (and this was a busy Saturday night) and kept our drink glasses filled. Good option if you're in the area. read more

I couldn't finish it, but I'm partial to Gullivers version and that one can't be beat! We ordered the baked rigatoni and chicken sandwich. The food was okay, but my husband and I left half there. We both agreed it was lacking flavor. Atmosphere was ok during the lunch hours, but because there where only 3 tables of customers, the staff stood in the corner lurking, literally watching us eat. Excellent! Was not sure what to expect at 9pm on a Sunday night, but I trusted Yelp and I'm glad I did! The wood-roasted meats seem to be the specialty, they are a great deal and they are delicious. I had the pork, which came with stuffing, gravy, applesauce and mashed potatoes. When it came to the table, I died a little. It was awesome. My BF got the chicken, which was great, but did not come with gravy. I highly recommend a side of gravy, as it is totally delicious (is that a hint of cinnamon?) and does wonderful things for the mashed potatoes. Both dishes came with soup or salad. Johnnys Kitchen and Tap used to be our favorite place to eat. We decided to get our favorite meals at a cost of $70. We ordered dinner chicken brochette. Usually the dinner consists of 2 skewers but we received one which is usually the lunch size. The rice pilaf and chicken has a wonderful lemon flavor and the chicken is usually charred nicely on outside. The rice was overcooked and the chicken was not charred at all and tasted like it was steamed. No lemon flavor and very bland. Next our favorite Fried Calamari had no flavoring and tasted bland and as if it was boiled. The breading had no taste. Even the usual cocktail sauce was different. Usually we are fighting to eat the entire order. We ordered soup because no matter what type of soup you receive from Johnnys is wonderful. The soup was chicken rice however there may have been a tablespoon of rice in each bowl. It was mostly broth and carrots. I don't know if they are trying to cut costs due to the Pandemic or changed chefs during this time. We were all so disappointed in all our meals that we don't want to go back again. read more

To be honest, I probably would have overlooked this restaurant as a generic family dining establishment had it not been for the reviews I read. From the moment I walked through the door, it was all starting to dawn on me....this is going to be good. We sat at the bar with a direct line of site to the wood burning rotisserie. We started out with an order of the calamar, which was perfectly breaded and fried. For our meals, my wife chose the Rotisserie Roasted Pork, and I chose the Club House Sandwich. Wow! Both were spectacular! The pork was moist and absolutely delicious. The real mashed potatoes were excellent as was the gravy. The stuffing that comes with the pork is unreal! The Club was also perfectly done! The house roasted turkey made all the different. Our server was very friendly and efficient. I have no complaints about this place. We've gone here a few times and its great for a slightly more upscale dining experience without breaking the bank. Most items on the menu fall between $10-$20 a plate, a few steaks and such are over that but nothing that unafforable. They have a wood burning oven for roasting chicken and pork which is clearly some of the best selections on the menu but the london broil I'd had was very decent as well. The french onion soup was also a bowl of frenchy, oniony and cheesy goodness. It can attract an older crowd but thats not something that I really pay that much attention to, old people gotsta eat too. The first time I went there, I decided to split a large pasta dish with a friend. They informed me that there was a splitting fee. WHAAA? Anyone who has a splitting fee is not A-OK in my book. Still the food was pretty good and there sure was a lot of it. The splitting fee also included that each person gets a soup or a salad, which is kind of nice. The second time I went there, I got carry out (so that I wouldn't have to worry about the splitting fee). The fettucini al fredo with chicken is a must-try for al fredo lovers. I had heard really great things about Johnny's Kitchen, but it fell flat when we took our family there for dinner. We went to dinner on a Friday night, the place was absolutely packed at 7 pm and we had to wait for a table for our family of five. No worries, anywhere else would be the same problem. We actually got seated in 15-20 minutes, and with that there is no complaint. Now, I said it was busy, but that doesn't mean that we should sit down and wait for 15 minutes before the server makes it to our table to take our order. But, it did. Our server had about 3/4 of the section we were sitting in, next to the bar, but still... that's a long time to wait for a table. Ordered chopped steak, a burger, chicken and a salad... really, nothing bad, just wasn't great. Food was prepared as requested (although see my next comment on the kid's meal), but really was just average. My 8 yr old ordered off of the kids menu, ordered two mini burgers and they were rare... generally kids would prefer something a little less pink, at least in my experience. My son was through one burger before he showed me on the 2nd one just how rare it was... and he tolerated it, but I guess I don't get how you make a kid's meal less than medium, without asking. Kid's meals were decently priced... but for the 1/2 slab of ribs, which was $14.99 and the same thing, on the regular menu was $16.99... probably should consider making it a quarter rack and charging maybe $8.99. I'm guessing more families would see value in that. By the time we wrapped up dinner, at about 8:30, the restaurant was nearly empty so from that perspective, I would suggest coming in closer to 8 on a Friday night. I should also note that dinner for the 5 in my family was $101, and one did get a kid's meal... so, the price-point is on the higher end, as we generally spend more like $70 for what we got for the 5 of us. I ended up ordering salad with a quarter roasted chicken on the side because I'm not rigid and will eat some things. I was at first nervous about this place because the parking lot was full (which is a good sign, don't get me wrong) about waiting for a table, but was pleasantly surprised they took me in immediately. Inside, reminds me of a very old restaurant (in a good way) with lots of wood and has that warm I want to hang out here after a snowstorm feeling to it. Was immediately seated in a nice booth and given bread for meal. Johnny's Kitchen and Tap is an upper end bar and grill. Most of the food here has a Greek twist to it. Options such as pasta, chicken, pork chops, and steaks cover the menu. Prices here are very reasonable; most items here can be had for under $16. I decided upon the Greek Pork Chops. The Pork Chops also came with a salad and I got the Mash Potatoes side. I got the salad and I guess being from California I'm a bit spoiled about the freshness of the produce I get. While the salad was generous, definitely not fresh. But overall still good. Now the pork chops on the other hand, a whole better than what I get in California. Got 2 big chops with a generous serving of mash potatoes. Cook just right with a nice taste of olive oil and garlic and pepper. 1 chop would have been more than enough for me. I have to say, I felt bad only paying $13 for the amount of food I got here. Overall, service was good, the waitress and bust boys were very attentive, with the exception of the salad, the food was very good, and for my entire meal, cost me $20 including tip, would highly recommend Johnny's Kitchen & Tap for your nice sit down meal. I hadn't been back since my last review so I was quite excited to spend my Christmas eve celebration here. Disappointing experience- likely will not return. I ordered a steak med rare. My steak had so much char on it that it wasn't enjoyable and difficult to cut. By the time we were asked about our meal, I'd finished a third of it and didn't want to wait for another steak despite the server offering to take it back. He saw me showing my friend how hard it was due to char by poking it with my fork. I regret that decision and spending so much on a meal I did not enjoy. My bad. Also, when he took my plate away, I showed him how hard the bread was by slamming against the plate. My friend had prime rib and hers was fine-however; she had to ask for Au jus. This is one of my go-tos in this area. Cafe Lucci and Jolanes are the others. Of the three this is the most homey, casual, and down to earth. Come in several times and they will remember who you are. The food is homemade comfort food with lots of wood roasted choices. Good solid food. Food is not as refined as CL and Jolanes but solid choices,homey and more affordable. I have been to Johnny's at least 100 times, and it's always delicious! It's our family's go-to restaurant when we don't feel like cooking. I have tried almost everything on the menu and it's always great. They have huge salads served in chilled metal bowls, flavorful pasta, and great steaks. Their ribs, wood-roasted chicken and seafood specials are delicious, too! Consistently good food! It is also great to see the Chef walking about the dining room asking tables how their meals are. If she hears a complaint, she'll take it back and fix you a new meal immediately. If she sees you there often (which has happened to us), she may even send a Tiramisu to your table, on her! Overall it's a bit of an older crowd and/or families. They'll take you either way: casual on a weekday night or dressed up for a special occasion on the weekend. How can anyone eat an entire portion here? They're HUGE! I was taken here because I am new to the area and also - I work in the area every now and then and a group of us went here. When we pulled up to the restaurant I didn't see anything phenomenal about the place. Yes, I don't judge some books by its cover so I went inside and found this place to be the high point of Glenview/Wheeling area. Place was damn near packed and me and a few got a drink at the bar. After the rest of our party got there we were seated and had a very friendly server who loved that all of us were ready for Round X. We decided to get appetizers which was a bad idea. Don't get me wrong the appetizers were great its just I didn't know they were so LARGE. I looked at someone at my party and wondered why I got dinner. I got roasted vegetables and grilled chicken and it was fantastic. I knew there was no way I was going to work this food off so I sat back - defeated. Food won. I thought the meat was kind of gamy and tough (I've had a lot of ribs in my lifetime). The charbroiled skirt steak was not cooked to order; it was not medium rare. Even though it's called a "charbroiled" steak, there was no crispiness to it. Seemed like it was boiled and drenched in sauce. When I first walked in there, I was taken aback by the decor and the crowd. It was definitely not what I expected. I had imagined a bar-like/tap-like atmosphere and instead, it was just like a diner and the crowd is indeed mature. We stuck out like a sore thumb, but it's ok.
