TRIVIA! I love that Johnny's has added trivia on Wednesday nights. There are a lot of options for bar trivia in the area, and they all come with their pros and cons. The trivia host, Hampton, is great! My only wish is that it lasted longer. Trivia nights (so far) only last for about an hour. Coupled with great food and awesome drink prices, Wednesday nights at Johnny's is a win....even if your trivia team happens to lose. read more

I've been to Johnnys a few times already, and was never extremely impressed. The food is always fine, the service is fine. This time though, our server was so nice and helpful and I got the French Dip sandwich with fries and it was so satisfying and delicious! When you order this, they ask if you would like mayo or horseradish for it, and the server let me in on a "secret" - if you get horseradish, it's straight grated horseradish, not horseradish sauce! She ended up bringing me both horseradish and mayo so I can make my own sauce and it worked out great! My one complaint would be how dark it is in there - at least in our section. Stopped in for dinner and it was crowded as usual. We hadn't been in a while. The waitress was nice but she was too busy to give good enough service. We both ordered pizza and my husband's was good. I ordered their gluten free crust with light on the sauce, pepperoni and extra cheese. It use to be you could get up to 4 toppings but they changed it to only cheese and each topping is .75. Anyways, my pizza came out the exact opposite of what I ordered. First, it was cold and it had tons of sauce and hardly any cheese and the pepperoni. I sent it back which my husband was half done with his by the time I got mine. The waitress apologized profusely. The remake was better thankfully but I feel like their quality has gone downhill since that is what I always order in the past since there aren't many gluten free choices. Arrived around 245pm on a Tuesday for a late lunch. The place was not crowded. We were between a round of golf an an evening Royals game. We have eaten here before. It is a pubbery with televisions everywhere for sports viewing. Service was cheerful and prompt we were sitting at one of the high tops in the bar area. Ordered a couple of lagers which came quickly. We just wanted a regular pizza pie and ordered it that way. It took about 10 minutes and came out as a white pie or we later learned a "cheese pie". There was no sauce on the pie and when I think "regular" I expect some cheese and some sauce. Our server agreed. The young chef came out and informed us that there was sauce in the pizza - no there was not. Seeing is believing. Our server took it back and about10 minutes later we got a pie that was much closer to our expectations. They did the right thing by making another pie for us and our server was always pleasant and accommodating. We think it was either a different chef in the back or a simple mis-communication. Anyway the pie we ended up getting was not the greatest pizza we ever had either. Total was ~$42 for a couple of beers and a less than wonderful pizza pie. Love this place. It's probably the best place in Shawnee to catch a game. I wish I took more pictures of the atmosphere but they have lots of TVs and a good amount of seating. It wasn't our first time there but the steak quesadilla is my favorite food that I've had there. I've found that many places make a dry quesadilla but this was not the case here. Johnnys has several locations and is very kid friendly! There's lots of TV's so you can watch any sport that is playing while you eat. We had a bad experience at a different location and were given a gift card so we decided to give it another try! I am glad because this time was a lot better- maybe the location or the other location had a bad day who knows! We both ordered a "mule" because it was the special of the day($5) I got the cranberry mule and my husband got the mango mule. We both liked our drinks. They weren't exceptional, but not terrible either. We then ordered a pizza with four toppings. The pizza was delicious for bar food. It's not my favorite pizza but good enough that I would definitely get it again. It was reasonable also maybe $12. Our waitress, though I cannot remember her name, was on point and very nice ! We love going to Johnny's for a quick beer, and enjoy the happy hour appetizers on social during the week. On Tuesday nights, they do taco Tuesday and it's a great deal. Tonight we tried the pizza, half off full pizzas on Monday nights. It was a huge 18 inch loaded pizza due $10! So good! We've never had anything but great service here, at the bar and at the tables. Despite that, service was great, quick, efficient, our smiling pleasant waitress got my order just right. We dropped in to this location because they have a great outside patio. We started with the Fried Pickles and Jalapeno Caps ($9), a generous portion of house-battered pickle chips and sliced jalapenos. And we also ordered the Espi-Nachos ($13), your choice of chicken or beef, along with tortilla chips topped with espinaca cheese sauce, pico de gallo, black beans, black olives, queso fresco, and served with either classic salsa or salsa verde. Both were great and a definite crowd-pleaser when you have hungry people that need something fast. I ordered the Royal Bleu Burger ($14), a burger with Wilson sauce, bleu cheese crumbles, bacon, crispy onions, and garlic aioli. It was a glorious and delicious mess--you won't be able to put it down once you start in on it. The kids ordered the '78 Classic Cheeseburger ($11), the burger that made them famous, back when they started grilling these in Lawrence in 1978; a burger, with American cheese, in a bun, "Nuff said!" and a Buffalo and Bleu Wrap ($12), buffalo chicken strips (grilled or crispy), bacon, shredded lettuce, tomato, and Johnny's bleu cheese dressing in a jalapeno cheddar tortilla. All their burgers, sandwiches, and wraps are served with a large selection of sides: seasoned fries, fry/ring combo, cottage cheese, steamed broccoli, pub chips, fries, brown rice, or coleslaw. Honestly, I have been to 1 or 2 Johnny's Taverns and they're good but nothing impressive. HOWEVER. This Johnny's, on Shawnee Mission PKWY, is awesome. I showed up at 10:50 to start Saturday Fun Day. They don't open till 11 but I'm sure there were already people inside. Anyway, my boyfriend and I walked in, took a seat at the bar and were immediately helped by the bartender. She was so great! Very attentive and friendly. The great thing about this Johnny's is the outdoor patio.... it is Patio Season now and I will be going back to hang on this patio! They have one downstairs and then stairs that lead to a smaller upstairs patio. Upstairs on the patio they have fake grass, corn hole, giant jenga and one other game. I was THRILLED. The weather was perfect. Downstairs, inside at the bar, you are still able to enjoy the beautiful weather because they have garage door type windows that slide up and open to the outside. On to the food: I always get the '78 Classic Burger. I get it with cheese only and french fries. You guys... the hamburger buns are probably my fav part. They are so soft and tasty. The real show stopper was my boyfriends lunch. He got the Dodge City burger with a fried chicken patty instead of hamburger. It came with an onion ring, cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce. Overall, the food at Johnny's is great. I've never had anything off the menu that I didn't enjoy or want to take home for later. My issue with Johnny's is the quality control when ordering food to-go. 3/5 times, my food order is wrong. To elaborate, this has included missing sides, wrong meals, and entrees that are missing completely. I once ordered a burger and I got the fries and condiments but was missing the whole entire burger. Now as an employee, if I checked the ticket that is stapled to the bag, I would probably wonder why a bag that is supposed to have a large burger in it feels so light. Obviously, that's not the case with the current staff. I've had numerous issues and although I haven't previously complained or written a review, I'm writing this one in hopes that management can get their line in order. What I would love is for someone to be assigned to double check the contents of the to-go order before placing it behind the bar and telling the bartended it's ready for pickup. It's frustrating to have to make another trip to get my entire order, or to go with missing items completely. If there is already someone assigned to this job, well...
